I didn't follow the midweeks as closely back then, but were people surprised that Crazy Frog beat out a returning Coldplay in a chart battle that wasn't that close? I presume many thought it would be Coldplay at number 1...
I like the MCR shout. I remember listening to the charts that week and being surprised that they managed to get official number 1! SO deserved though. Similarly Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire seemingly came out of nowhere at the time iirc. Although it was more obvious as the week went on due to having access to iTunes and tracking it's progress etc.. I still think before it's release people wouldn't have called it as being a number 1 hit. |

A thread in the chart forum reminded me of 'Beneath Your Beautiful' - I don't know if the actual week itself was unpredictable but I vaguely remember everyone being shocked at it taking off on iTunes (I'm assuming an XF performance contributed).

Yeah X Factor helped Labrinth.
Was Gabrielle Aplin unexpected? I thought it'd be a hit but can't remember if it was expected to go to #1! |

Yeah X Factor helped Labrinth. Was Gabrielle Aplin unexpected? I thought it'd be a hit but can't remember if it was expected to go to #1! It kind of felt to me at the time like it ascended to #1 in a dry week with no real strong competition, it wasn't exactly an event. |
