BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Forgotten, Undeserving & Surprising Top 10's of the decade

Posted by: Evil Houdini 30th April 2018, 08:14 PM

Inspired by Midge's thread discussing #1's of this current decade which songs that peaked in the top 10 between #2 - #10 would you say are forgotten, undeserving of their top 10 status and caused a surprise when it achieved a peak of that nature or in hindsight looking back a few years later?

This would be some of my suggestions:

Forgotten Top 10's
Inna - Hot
Ben Pearce - What I Might Do
Alyssa Reid ft Jump Smokers - Alone Again
Foxes - Let Go For Tonight

Surprising Top 10's
Redlight - Lost In Your Love
Krept & Konan ft Jeremih - Freak Of The Week
Ten Walls - Walking With Elephants

For the underserving top 10 hits it'd have to be any song that got into the top 10 because of ACR or whatever it's called.

Forgotten top 10s:

- Charlie Brown - On My Way
- McLean - My Name
- Mike Mago & Dragonette - Outlines
- Sway - Level Up

I have absolutely no recollection of how 'Outlines' goes at all and it was only 3 years ago laugh.gif

There are loads of songs worsely remembered than Let Go For Tonight which is used on telly all the time

Yeah Let Go For Tonight is used on shows like BGT all the time, I'd say that one's actually reasonably well remembered!

A couple of suggestions from me:

Loveable Rogues - What a Night
Marcus Collins - Seven Nation Army
John Martin - Anywhere For You

Hot always comes back around each summer I find.

Posted by: Jade 30th April 2018, 08:21 PM

'Hot' is always one of my go-to songs for the summer btw! *.* that and 'Stereo Love' were the first couple of songs I thought of when compiling a playlist a couple of weeks ago when the sun came out. A shame that's a bit forgotten, I'm sure people would recognise it if it came on (well, my mum did anyway *_*) but yeah, I imagine lots wouldn't be able to recall the Inna - 'Hot' artist and title combination.

Posted by: Rooney 30th April 2018, 08:23 PM

Who cares if they were not well remembered, couple of you have just reminded me of some banging tracks. Anywhere For You and Outlines are quality.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 30th April 2018, 08:25 PM

Pepper and Piano - You Took My Heart and Emma's Imagination - This Day

I challenge ANYONE to remember the above or where they came from (don't cheat if you followed the charts at the time x)

Thats true about the artist/title combination, I imagine if people heard the song, a lot would not be able to identify the title.

I was the same when I made my summer playlist! Most of summer 2010 music brings so many memories!

DJ Cassidy - Calling All Hearts

This was SO bad laugh.gif

That 'Anywhere For You' song also sprung to mind for me - and I haven't got the slightest idea how 'Outlines' goes. 'On My Way' was one of the songs of 2013 thooo wub.gif

I still listen to You Took My Heart quite a lot laugh.gif it was very Adele just before she came back bigger than ever.

Adore the John Martin song, I’ve always found it very near as euphoric as Don’t You Worry Child!

I’ll offer up any of Angel’s multiple No.9 hits, Show Me Love (America) by The Wanted and Do It All Over Again by Elyar Fox.

Pixie Lott - Nasty ;o sad.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 30th April 2018, 08:46 PM

'Freak of the Week' wasn't a surprise Top10 for me! It was bang on-trend and received heavy airplay. Still a regular during R&B sections of DJ sets.

'Level Up' is a great shout, haven't heard that in years. Sway had so much better (Still Speedin' for one).

A more thought provoking question is what Top 10s are/will be forgotten since OA/OS and streaming became widespread?

Think 'River' is definitely one.

What do you mean by "undeserving " ?

Songs that got into the top 10 through luck or narrowly scraped into the top 10 by a very close margin on sales. Or songs that got into the top 10 because another song lower in the chart did not have a full 7 days to accumulate sales in a particular week. Or it could be songs that have not made as big of an impact in the long term as most top 10 hits. It's all objectively speaking of course!

Posted by: Midge 30th April 2018, 09:10 PM

Tbh I think the most 'undeserving' hits are the ones that are clearly bought in bulk for one reason or another and left on the shelf (or equivalent)... not bought for its musical merit

the ones propped up by Spotify payola most likely, i.e. Maggie Lindemann 'Pretty Girl', Starley 'Call On Me', Martin Jensen 'Solo Dance', NF 'Let You Down'.

Also from last year the Ed Sheeran and Drake album tracks, Eminem 'Walk On Water' (if that isn't already forgotten!), Louis Tomlinson 'Back To You', David Guetta '2U', Justin Bieber 'Friends', and the charity/X-Factor ones.

Mclean - My Name is definitely the best shout so far.

Also perhaps Tchami - Promesses, completely forgot that actually went top 10!

Only vaguely, I think. A lot of passive streams for those songs would have happened. Won't be forgotten in the same way as fluke top tens from the early 2010s (McLean etc) of course but nothing but the charity / campaign singles will be quite that forgotten.

Posted by: Bré 30th April 2018, 09:53 PM

Tbh I remember 'Let Go For Tonight' quite well but I actually completely forgot it charted as high as the top 10. 'Youth' should have been the one to smash for her x

'Outlines' is a song that I only remember existing because of the last time I saw it in a list of top 10s and thought 'wtf I completely forgot this song existed', that has to be the ultimate forgotten top 10 hit of recent years for me at least.

Birdy's 'Wings' and James Bay's 'Let It Go' only ever made the top 10 because of the 5 day week with no Spotify included so I guess they are 'undeserving' top 10 hits, even though the latter was obviously a gigantic hit (and 'Wings' is still pretty well-known too).

Posted by: Defaze 30th April 2018, 10:07 PM

'Outlines' is a massive bop and pretty well remembered for me, but then again I've got it on a few Spotify playlists. Same with 'Control', although I believe R1 give it a spin here and there which probably helps.

This has been been the most apt example for me. I still barely remember it after listening to it, yet recall the release week rather well because of Pixie and Kylie. laugh.gif Probably for the best because it's bloody dreadful. '

(I'm a Freak' from that same week's a good example too, and even the #1 ('Tsunami') is kind of forgettable.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 30th April 2018, 10:34 PM

I wouldn't say 'Hot' is particularly forgotten, surely if that is then pretty much every top 10 from that era is too?

Yeah I agree with about half the ones mentioned so far, outlines is probs the one that jumps out the most as I don't even have any recollection of the song title

Posted by: cantthinkofaname 30th April 2018, 11:30 PM

Most of Ed and Drake’s album songs last year were undeserving as they were only propelled so high thanks to people putting the album on repeat as opposed to people actually enjoying them as distinct songs.

Really? I've hardly heard those two songs in recent years.

I agree about Outlines being largely forgotten but it was a tune back then and listening to it now it still remains a tune for me.

Candy & Like U Like by Aggro Santos definitely are two top 10 hits that don't get referenced much now. Like U Like in particular which I think got top 10 mainly because of Kimberley from Girls Aloud and because he appeared on I'm A Celebrity around the time of release.

I know all the bolded ones! I remember some of the others as well by the titles but can't remember what they sound like. And Alex Day with his 50 versions on iTunes haha. Sad that I can't remember the Wretch 32 song because I love his music (and especially considering I remember the PARADE song of all things...). I think I might know Blackout but I'm not 100% sure.

I was actually doing work experience for Andreya Triana's record label (Ninja Tunes) when Breach - Everything You Never Had was out! I had to go around the city putting posters up everywhere lol. I still have one of them in fact! I was pretty chuffed when it went top 10, although I'm sure it wasn't anything to do with me. Also, I think it's a great song, but I will admit it was a surprise top 10. Jack was a MUCH bigger song, but Everything You Never Had is a lot more radio friendly for sure. I saw a while ago that Andreya Triana had one of her own songs playlisted on Radio 2, so she had some more success after this song.

I don't really remember 6 Words either, but I must have listened to it. I THINK it was a drum & bass sort of song?

I actually talked with Wretch 32 once on a Spotify chat room. It was around 2012 I think, I can't remember much about it, but by coincidence saw him say on Twitter that he was doing an event with Spotify, and I already had Spotify so I thought I'd go. I was surprised because there was only about 10 of us who turned up. I can't remember what it was exactly, but basically we were all in a chat room with him within Spotify and could talk as much as we want.

He seemed quite bored to be honest, for example he was typing short replies to everybody, but maybe it's just his personality, I don't know. I can't remember what we talked about, but I was there for the whole hour. I was probably just telling him how much I like each of his songs lol.

My favourite of all his songs I think is Off With Their Heads with Devlin. So Epic!

You Ruin Me going top 10 was such a *.* moment though. Veronicas grabbing an unexpected second moment in the sun five years later.

Breach - Jack
Karmin - Brokenhearted
Stevie McCrorie - Lost Stars
Lemar - The Way Love Goes
And a lot of glee singles

And also when Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds went back in to the top 10 in 2010 (not the fact that it was forgotten because it was a huge hit in the 90s but most people won’t remember it went back in to the top 10.

I always hear that 'Jack' song quoted around still everywhere still.

Posted by: Robbie 1st May 2018, 02:30 PM

It's already been mentioned but I was very surprised when 'Forever Yours' by Alex Day entered the charts at number 4 on Christmas Day 2011 on sales of 52,881. Didn't he used to post here at BuzzJack when the single was released? Had it not been for that I would never have heard about the single. In fact I don't think I've even heard the track and the following week it fell from number 4 to 112. Talk about a one week wonder.

Some more forgotten top 10's from the 2010's:

Tinchy Stryder - In My System: One of my favourite songs from Tinchy but one that I think the general public wouldn't remember off the top of their heads now

Devlin ft Ed Sheeran - All Along The Watchtower

Tinchy Stryder ft Dappy - Spaceship

Parra For Cuva ft Anna Naklab - Wicked Games

Some top 10's that surprised me (and possibly others):

Kent Jones - Don't Mind: I heard this song a few times on the radio but I didn't know what it was called until it had entered the top 10 so it was a bit of a surprise to me.

Vato Gonzalez - Badman Riddim

Plan B - Ill Manors

'Blackout' and '6 Words' are both incredible songs. Actually all of Wretch's top 10 hits are ('Don't Go' is the weakest one for me - and the only one I can't recall the melody of - and that was the one that got #1 laugh.gif)

Posted by: ML Hammer95 1st May 2018, 05:48 PM

Watchtower is a great shout - came on shuffle the other day and I struggled to think why it did so well. Must have been the Ed Sheeran feature. iLL Manors was such a surprising Top 10 too, great song which received lots of publicity at the time.

Others I'd say:

Fuse ODG ft. Angel - T.I.N.A.
Wiley ft. Chip & Ms D - Reload
John Newman - Cheating
Showtek - Booyah (surprise Top 10, I mean listen to it now. laugh.gif)
Tinie Tempah - Children of the Sun
Shift K3Y - Touch (qualifies as forgotten and surprising I think, great little song though. Came out of nowhere)
Flo Rida ft. Robin Thicke - I Don't Like It, I Love It
DJ Fresh ft. Ella Eyre - Gravity

Posted by: Jüpiter 1st May 2018, 08:32 PM

Calling All Hearts would be my first pick too.
Some Jessie J songs maybe? LaserLight, the only reason I remember that is the annoying capitalisation.

How about most of Pixie Lott's second era post All About Tonight? I feel like she had maybe two more singles.
Wonderman by Tinie and Ellie Goulding would be another one I don't imagine is THAT well-remembered, and some later JLS ones too. I have no idea if those actually were top tens tho

Leona’s Trouble and Hurt
Neon Hitch Ass Back Home
Stooshe Love Me
Loveable Rogues What A Night
Leah McFall I Will Survive
One Direction - Gotta Be You
Pretty much all of Lawsons tracks and Union J’s which went top ten
The Wanteds Walks Like Rihanna and I Found You
Charlie Brown On My Way
Gabz The One
Sub Focus Endorphins
Ben Pearce What I Might Do
Bars and Melody Hopeful
TC Little Nikki Make You Bounce
Melissa Steel Kisses for breakfast
Iggy Azalea Change Your Life
Stevie McCrorie lost stars

3OH!3 - My First Kiss
Michael Jackson - Hold My Hand
Nicole Scherzinger - Boomerang
Loick Essien - How We Roll
