So last year is the first year I have participated in all 10 contests and to celebrate I wanted to make some sort of recap or countdown and thought I'd do it in a specific Diva manner so I'm gonna go over each of the 10 contests, make a fictional version with 3 semi finals and a wildcard group. Each semi final has 6 qualifiers and 4 wildcards with all remaining songs eliminated. Then the wildcard group is an Andra Chansen type thing where each of the 12 songs is pitted against a song from another semi final so we get 6 more finalists here. The winner from the previous edition is an auto-qualifier but everyone else is in a semi final based on their IRL placing (i.e. 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, etc will always end up in the same semi final although the auto-qualifier's IRL placing has the potential to shift things around; DNQ-ers are randomised between semi finals). Each final will therefore consist of 25 songs for consistency.

Now as this is a personal thread all the results will be based on my personal opinion but I felt this was a nice way to discover the songs from another angle and I wanted to set it up in a fantasy results style just for fun. With the semi/wc/final format I feel there is more room for me to get to know each of the songs better. In the end I plan to rank each song and country based on their performance in my contests over the year.

I'm obviously part of the pop-hoe mafia so expect pop music to do well here but I also enjoy dance, R&B and am open to various types of music so don't count out anything as I might surprise you.

First up will be BJSC 131 which took place in the Land of DW. However, in my fictional world it was Vülkyria and Moodshift who won the previous edition with "What About My Love" so they will go direct to the final this time around. I'll post the semi finals next and then tonight I'll post the results of the first semi final. Yes, there will be commentary of course smile.gif

Luckily you're in the first semi so who knows! You already know at least some of your entries last year were hits for me so I don't think you have to worry about being a total flop either way tongue.gif

Nice format to follow! Even if this is unlikely to be close to my taste I like seeing alt runthroughs of contests so I'll keep an eye on this one (DEMONDICE my beloved wub.gif)

Happy to hear that! Hopefully there's at least a few songs we somehow share an appreciation for even if our music tastes are perhaps not the most alike laugh.gif

So before I start this: tonight's "show" will just be the recap while tomorrow the results will be posted. This is because I'm the worst at time managing and spent way too long at getting the formatting right lmao. I'll let you predict qualifiers & wildcards after the show if you wanna play along but if not just enjoy this pretend play. I know I am laugh.gif

BUZZJACK SONG CONTEST 131
semi final one

We start this off with the first of three semi finals where twenty-one songs compete for ten spots. Six songs will qualify directly for the final, while four songs will go to the wildcard round. The remaining eleven songs will be eliminated tonight. In total we have sixty-four songs competing this month, and while Vülkyria has an automatic pass to the final for winning last month‘s competition, the other sixty-three songs are all hoping to get one of the twenty-four remaining spots in the final. It‘s going to be a bloodbath but it will be glorious so let‘s get started!

Now, there‘s no time to waste so let‘s take a look at the twenty-one contestants stepping on that stage tonight. For each artist I will recap their previous BJSC performance as well as how well they did in the real version of BJSC 131. After the show is over the results will be revealed. In depth commentary will only be provided for songs as they are eliminated.

* Missing: Aesthetica

01 | THELONIA // CHVRCHES – "Now Is Not The Time"

We start off the night with Thelonia who are represented by Scottish indie pop group CHVRCHES for their 50th anniversary edition. Their choice for this edition is a cut from their debut album that brings that classic indie pop style the Glasgow based band is so well known for. Thelonia used their anniversary chance well and were rewarded with a Top 20 position in the final, but will my bias against anniversary songs hold them back tonight?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: BJSC 47, 2nd – "Lies" (Isconia)
>> Previous Entries: BJSC 49, 5th – "The Mother We Share" (Hendinia)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 19th out of 42

02 | HUSHKANUKIA // Nadja Holm – "Used To Me"

Next up we go to Hushkanukia who have sent Swedish singer Nadja Holm, the winner of the 2020 season of Swedish Idol. Hushkanukia are known members of the pop mafia so their choice to go pure pop this month shouldn't have come as a surprise to none. However, this isn't something that the nations of Buzzjack usually want to hear more of so Nadja's journey ended in the bottom 3 of her semi but given my love for all things pop that doesn't necessarily have to be the case tonight.

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 28th out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

03 | ELEDAN // LiSA – "Gurenge" [紅蓮華, "Red Lotus"]

Third to the stage is Japanese pop singer LiSA for Elëdan whose music has famously been featured as theme music to various anime shows such as Fate/Zero. This is not something I'm used to listening to and sounds quite like something you'd hear during the end credits of a Final Fantasy game but LiSA brings some serious vocal chops to the stage. Unfortunately they weren't enough to save her in the real version but will it be enough this time around?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 23rd out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

04 | MULGRACIA // Roxen and Alexander Rybak – "Wonderland"

Next in line is Mulgracia. They have chosen two Eurovision alumnis to represent them tonight as Romanian singer Roxen is joined by Norwegian violinist and ESC 2009 winner Alexander Rybak. Surprisingly Rybak doesn't actually sing on this but instead just brings his violin to enhance the instrumental. Roxen has proven to be a strong post-Eurovision force and brings a fun song with an entertaining video. IRL she qualified but remained in the lower half of the final, but can she do better?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries (Rybak): BJSC 17, DNQ – "Roll With The Wind" (Espen)
>> Previous Entries (Roxen): BJSC 123, 25th – "Cherry Red" (Bhangra)
>> Previous Entries (Roxen): BJSC 126, 22nd – "Over & Over" (Cor Lupus)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 28th out of 42

05 | PAGASA // Omar Apollo – "Kamikaze"

The fifth on stage, and our final song before the first of three ad breaks, is Pagasa and Mexican-American singer Omar Apollo. Smooth R&B is what Omar has to offer and man is it smooth. Sounding like something you could easily imagine Khalid releasing, "Kamikaze" is aided with gorgeous visuals as the blue haired singer gives us a tune probably more fitting for the bedroom than most of tonight's entries. The masses didn't take to it though and Omar was paid dust with dead-last in the semi finals. I can promise he won't repeat the feat tonight but will he manage to qualify?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 31st out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

06 | UTOPIA // Be Charlotte – "Back To Life"

It‘s time to meet the second Scottish artist of the night as we welcome Be Charlotte to the stage on behalf of Utopia. This young singstress has a beautiful and thick scottish accent that brings a certain flavor to this slice of pop delicious. This is a cute love song and managed to nab a coveted qualification slot over some of the more forgettable pop songs - undoubtedly aided by Charlotte's charm in getting there. Question is: does it manage to outshine the other pop songs for me as well?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 35th out of 42
[/size]

07 | AESTHETICA // Ami Suzuki – "Delightful"

Aesthetica are next up with the second Japanese artist of the night, singer and DJ Ami Suzuki. Ami was very popular in Japan in the 2000s, with many homegrown hits to her name including this interesting piece of Japanese late noughties culture. I've never heard of Ami before but I imagine if Japan had participated in Eurovision in the 2000's this would have been a typical entry of theirs circa 2008. Surprisingly, Ami failed to impress her peers in her semi but can she do something niche songs often struggle with and win me over?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 26th out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

08 | FARC // Stace Cadet and KLP – "Energy"

Over to Oceania now as Australian DJ Stace Cadet joined forces with fellow Aussie Kristy Lee Peters (known professionally as KLP) to represent FARC in this edition. Stace & KLP are here to start the party as "Energy" is a hype machine. We've got infectious groove, quirky vocals and a wacky video so not much left on the check list. Dance clan ate this up for good reason, but is it memorable enough to get to the final?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries (Stace): Debut
>> Previous Entries (KLP): BJSC 81, DNQ – "Recover" (Thelonia)
>> Previous Entries (KLP): BJSC 108, 35th – "Talkin Bout It" (Holland-Oats)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 16th out of 42

09 | GREENFROZE // HYYTS – "SOS"

Greenfroze are next up with the third Scottish artist of the night as brothers Adam and Sam Hunter make up electropop duo HYYTS. Synthpop is always a solid choice and let me tell you, these brothers know their way around the synthesizer. The vocals are great and you can certainly feel the emotions build up for the length of "SOS". This is another pop song accepted by the critics but does this main critic think it's worthy of a spot in the final?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 25th out of 42

10 | NICELAND // Luz – "The Author"

Before we head into another ad break we catch up with Irish-Argentinian singer Luz who is this month‘s representative for Niceland. Love songs are often very hit or miss as they need to hit a certain spot where you manage to catch the emotions of the singer. I think Luz does a good job of conveying her emotions onto the listener and the beautiful video certainly helps but is it memorable enough? The voters of BJSC 131 didn't seem to think so.

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 24th out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

Hahaha, don't worry I think it will be a bit easier to understand quickly. Basically just my fantasy version of how I'd have liked things to have gone down in each edition of BJSC this year but instead of making a list of my fave songs I've decided to make it a bit more fun!

11 | TARTFORD // Alex Party – "Wrap Me Up"

In a first for tonight we‘re joined by a band that‘s been disbanded for over twenty years now as Italian electronic dance group Alex Party performs on behalf of Tartford. They are no strangers to success as the group managed four Top 40 UK hits in the 90‘s including their entry tonight. I admittedly have never heard of this group previously but they definitely SCREAM 90's eurodance. This party banger fills the dance classic niche well in this edition and in a 90's themed spin-off I'd go wild for this but how does it compare to the more recent songs in this semi?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 41st out of 42

12 | D‘YERMAK‘ER // Kate Nash – "Karaoke Kiss"

One of this month‘s most recognisable names is British singer Kate Nash who represents D‘yermak‘er tonight. While Kate has never been what you‘d call a chart force she did rack up four Top 40 UK hits between 2007 and 2010, none of which have since appeared in BJSC. I've never been a Kate Nash stan so I'm probably less familiar with her catalogue than the average Buzzjack member but I'll admit this isn't what I would have guessed for her sound. Very early 2010's but in a good way. You all took well to Nash but what will this filthy casual think?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: BJSC 8, 13th – "Skeleton Song" (Ojnoj)
>> Previous Entries: BJSC 17, DNQ – "Mariella" (Palmyra)
>> Previous Entries: BJSC 103, 19th – "Drink About You" (Azure)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 13th out of 42

13 | SÉYETANA // DEMONDICE – "Alkatraz"

For something completely different we now jump to Séyetana who chose American rapper and Youtuber DEMONDICE, whose real name is Karen, to represent them this month. This is very interesting to say the least and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. The music video further pushes the vintage feel of the song and it feels a bit Great Gatsby-esque but still very not. But will the weirdness of "Alkatraz" be its saviour or demise tonight?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 38th out of 42

14 | DANÆVIIA // Worakls and Rusanda Panfili – "Storm"

French DJ Kevin Rodrigues, better known as Worakls and Moldovan violinist Rusanda Panfili are next up with an instrumental entry for Danæviia which turned out to be Buzzjack‘s favorite tune of the month. The actual winner is quite the epic even though I had completely forgotten about it until now. It's very Hans Zimmer and I'm willing to bet seeing this performed live by a huge orchestra would be something you'd never forget. The question is, do I think the win was deserved or underwhelming?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries (Worakls): Debut
>> Previous Entries (Rsanda): Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 1st out of 42

15 | FLJÓTAVÍK // Namasenda – "Wanted"

Fljótavík is next up with Swedish singer Naomi Namasenda representing the Northern Vinorel archipelago. Naomi‘s presence in the Swedish music scene was felt clearly in 2017 when she presented the Swedish Grammys. Further showcasing the diversity of this semi final we now have added hyperpop to the mix which is a genre I know shockingly little about. The drop is intense and the vocals are high but somehow it works. Public consensus seems to agree as Namasenda was awarded a Top 5 spot, but does it go too hard or just hard enough?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 4th out of 42

16 | BØTANIKKÄ // GusGus featuring Vök – "Higher"

Let‘s head on over to Bøtanikkä now to see two artists I‘ve had the pleasure of seeing live with two Icelandic bands GusGus and Vök. As an Icelander myself, both of these artists have been an integral part of my growing up experience and it's hard for me to deny the epicness of this song. However, I try not to let my bias spill too hard into this for songs that I knew before I heard them on BJSC and hearing it live was a bit of a let down, so nothing is promised about Botanikka's chances in this edition.

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries (GusGus): BJSC 45, 12th – "Over" (Aeroche)
>> Previous Entries (Vök): BJSC 77, 13th – "Waterfall" (Espen)
>> Previous Entries (Vök): BJSC 95, 35th – "Before" (Bøtanikkä)
>> Previous Entries (Vök): BJSC 111, 30th – "Erase You" (Altyr Muunilinst)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 10th out of 42

17 | JUPITERDONIA // Anna Straker – "Break Up Song"

London-based singer Anna Straker is seventeenth on stage to represent Jupiterdonia to bring some more pop to the stage. Break ups suck but Anna makes it sound like a party to be honest. If this is what breaking up always sounded like I think people would be far more willing to end things but alas it's usually not this much fun. Anna joins the pop bunch and while BJSC chose this as a stand-out banger, do I necessarily feel the same?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: BJSC 91, 26th – "Serious" (Republic of Adonia)
>> Previous Entries: BJSC 124, 41st – "Sweat" (Ultraviolenceland)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 7th out of 42

18 | REPUBLIC OF ADONIA // JPEGMAFIA – "BALD!"

From pop to hip hop we head on over to the Republic of Adonia where American rapper Barrington Hendricks – better known as JPEGMAFIA – is getting ready for the stage. It's a bit interesting seeing the contrast of Adonia's #131 entry and their #91 entry above. To me, a veeeery casual hip hop fan this sounds like something you could easily find on a Kendrick Lamar album. The instrumental is hot and the rap is, well, rap. So does Adonia manage the impossible by convincing me to appreciate a hip hop song or is it already a lost cause?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: Debut
>> Semi Final Results: DNQ, 21st out of 31
>> Grand Final Results: -

19 | WHY SO SIRIUS // Metropole Orkest Cellos – "Beirut"

Onto something completely different, Why So Sirius (now Sovarasma) has decided to send a whole Dutch orchestra to the contest this month with Metropole Orkest Cellos mashing jazz and pop together. On Why So Sirius' last showing in the contest before a rebranding they gave us this hauntingly beautiful symphonic piece. This was a risky choice but the risk didn't pay off in the real contest as Buzzjack decided there was no room for another instrumental in the final but do I agree or was Metropole Orkest done dirty?

IRL BJSC Stats:

20 | HENDINIA // GRACEY – "99%"

Second to last song now and it‘s time for English singer GRACEY (real name Grace Barker) to head to the stage for the fourth time in just 18 contests, this time representing Hendinia. There is no denying that "99%" is a bop and the beat is thick and it slaps hard but GRACEY just adds to the pile of pop bangers in this semi final. This song clearly didn't manage to feel innovative enough to the lot of you so the question remains: Does GRACEY have what it takes or is she still missing that 1% to pull through?

IRL BJSC Stats:

>> Previous Entries: BJSC 117, DNQ – "If You Loved Me" (Cadelicia)
>> Previous Entries: BJSC 127, 13th – "Like That" (United States of Jack)
>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 22nd out of 42

21 | POPHUB // Helena Legend – "Pasilda (Inpetto Remix)"

Closing out the show tonight is Australian DJ Helena Legend who borrows help from German producer Inpetto in the form of a remix for POPhub‘s entry this month. Helena turns out the party with this latin-infused dance event that feels akin to "We No Speak Americano" in terms of the vibe that it oozes. Songs like this invite a certain feeling in that make it so it's hard not to move your body. However, the lot of you didn't seem to find this memorable enough to battle it out for niche event of the month so maybe "Pasilda" will suffer a similar fate here?

>> Semi Final Results: Qualified
>> Grand Final Results: 31st out of 42

Hmm this is difficult to predict but I think these nations would do well for your taste so here are my predictions:

DQ: Jupiterdonia, Hendinia, Bøtanikkä, Utopia, Mulgracia, Fljótavík
AC: Niceland, Hushkanukia, Danæviia, FARC

I think Beirut would be in your lower half of all Sovarasman entries this year (including Beirut which the song should have represented under Sovarasma alias as it fits a lot better with the nation sound) so not expecting it to advance.

Let me just say though that this semi final is really good and immediately I regret limiting myself to just a 25 song final (but I will stick to it nonetheless) and choosing the finalists and wildcards was REALLY hard. I think I enjoyed some aspect of every single song to be honest. No song made me go “ew next”

I don’t even know if you liked any of my entries so I’m just here for the unbridled chaos and the inevitable “actually send something good this year x” comment
