I'm also not sure how strong Oman is as a top-ranked nation for one of these groups (Uzbekistan would've been better suited, being the best of 2nd slot teams)

Uzbekistan forcing the only group without a 6-point leader and Oman the only Pot 1 nation not leading their group.

It is what it is I guess! Imagine things will smooth themselves out with the various further rounds the Asian qualification system has.

Not necessarily related to the World Cup qualifying but the Asia Cup came to it's conclusion today and should be an indication of who might qualify.

Qatar became back-to-back winners which is a good sign for them reaching this World Cup. However, the team they beat in the final was 'Jordan' who have never previously made a World Cup so a surprise qualification might be on the cards. They beat South Korea 2-0 in the final and by all reports, absolutely dominated them. The South Korea manager, Jürgen Klinsmann was already unpopular and this tournament certainly hasn't helped him. Their opening game was the only game they won in 90 minutes with 2 further draws in the group stage. They knocked out Saudi Arabia in the last 16 on penalties after a 99th minute equalizer and Australia in extra time in the quarters after a 96th minute equalizer.

8 Asian nations will qualify directly for the World Cup 2026 and going off the quarter-finals in this tournament, it would be:

Australia
Iran
Japan
Jordan
Qatar
South Korea
Tajikistan
Uzbekistan

That would certainly be an interesting list! Qatar qualifying via the conventional means would certainly be interesting (even if it is easier with more teams)

Doesn't look to be too much competition in Group E there! Especially compared to other groups where the qualifying spots are still very much in the balance.

Japan have been awarded a 3-0 victory for their match that was cancelled against North Korea. This means that they've become the 7th team to qualify for Round 2 of AFC World Cup qualifying as well as the 2027 Asian Cup Finals. I'll update this in the tables above.

With the 5th match day in the books, some groups have everything cliched but quite a few still have important scenarios to play out on Tuesday.

In Group A, India really needed to find a goal yesterday vs. Kuwait to give them a chance to hold their slim 2nd place lead, but on Tuesday they'll travel to Qatar while Kuwait gets to host Afghanistan. It's likely Kuwait wins that and leap frogs into second place.

By beating Syria, North Korea gives themselves a chance on Tuesday when they host Myanmar while Syria travels to Japan. They're behind by a point in Group B.

Thailand keeps their slim chances alive in Group C by holding on for a draw in China yesterday. They'll need to beat Singapore by at least 4 goals on Tuesday and hope China loses at South Korea.

Similar scenario in Group D, where Malaysia got a 1-1 draw in Kyrgyzstan. Now Malayasia would need a miracle which would be to win by alot over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday while Kyrgyzstan loses a by a few in Oman. The goal difference right now is 8 in Kyrgyzstan's favor.

By virtue of Indonesia's home loss to Iraq and Vietnam's late drama to pull out a win over Philippines yesterday, we now see a scenario in Group F where Vietnam could sneak in if they pull off the upset away in Iraq. More than likely Indonesia just needs to navigate a likely win at home versus to Philippines to clinch.

We know the following nations will advance to Round 3:

Qatar
Japan
South Korea
Oman
Iran
Uzbekistan
Iraq
Saudi Arabia
Jordan
United Arab Emirates
Bahrain
Australia
Palestine

Glad we played so well today. AFC Asian Cup 2027 secured and we hope we're lucky enough in the third round to finish as another runner-up (while being realistic at the same time laugh.gif )!
