The 1975 has announced A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships as the name of thier 3rd album. Give Yourself A Try is out tonight.

Posted by: Jacob. 28th April 2017, 04:25 PM

They've already got an EP called Music For Cars though.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_for_Cars_(EP)

Interesting that they'd reuse a name like that, tbf most of the EP ended up on their self titled.

Posted by: All★bySmashMouth 28th April 2017, 09:49 PM

Darn. They sure refered to the 2013 EP. laugh.gif

Sounds like the date for the new single then?

Picture from the new video! Can't wait, Matty looks a bit like Gerard Way here.

They've been posting some weird stuff on twitter too that I think is hints at song names

Just because it was listened to doesn't mean it will be added on Friday as they listen to loads of songs before making a decision. I would highly imagine it will be instantly added because the station's love for the band but never take a randomer's post on reddit as gospel.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 30th May 2018, 09:35 PM

I'm very interested to see what the sound for this single will be like, I'm hoping it's like Sex.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 31st May 2018, 03:49 PM

The song has leaked, and it's very different from what I was expecting. It's very guitar-heavy, it reminds me a bit of The Strokes. I really like it.

Posted by: TMD_24Quavo 31st May 2018, 06:17 PM

Looks like they have scrapped the Music For Cars name and gone for "A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships"

Going with the long titles names I see. biggrin.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 31st May 2018, 06:20 PM

He has said Music for Cars will be the name of the 'era', and will also include the next album next year.

This is good, but sounds like a COMPLETE ripoff of 'Disorder' by Joy Division laugh.gif

I think the title change was to avoid confusion with their EP Music For Cars.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 31st May 2018, 08:21 PM

There is currently a livestream on The 1975's YouTube counting down to midnight, I'm assuming it's the video but there have also been rumors of an EP!

With this being album 3 and having a HR premiere on Annie Mac I think it will be instant added perhaps even into the B List as theyreat their peak popularity now imo.

This is okay but the sound of the guitars are a little grating. Not sure it's one I'll return to.

It's definitely a sample tongue.gif I like how they've used Disorder and the two songs do have similarities in theme lyrically but I feel like they could've toned it down a bit more tongue.gif I'm really liking it so far though

"A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships" is album 1 of the "Music for Cars" era, with "Notes on a Conditional Form" being album 2 and coming out in May 2019. I think it's fitting that this era is called Music for Cars, since that was the EP that gave us Chocolate which was/is their biggest and most defining hit.

Posted by: Bré 10th June 2018, 11:59 PM

'Give Yourself A Try' is an absolutely killer comeback from them, think it might actually be challenging 'Chocolate' as my fave song of theirs to date! Such an earworm.

Posted by: Midge 11th June 2018, 07:41 AM

It's tough between "Love Me", "Chocolate", "The Sound", "A Change Of Heart" and "Somebody Else" for me - though "Give Yourself A Try" should slot nicely in there somewhere longterm. I am really liking it. Though I can also understand why someone doesn't.

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th June 2018, 01:28 PM

Give Yourself A Try is definitely one of the best songs around right now, it's grown on me so much!

So it is a second single then?

Posted by: Midge 19th July 2018, 11:09 PM

Well this went right over my head on first listen. I felt that way with "Give Yourself A Try" though and I grew to love that very quickly. I also got over it quickly after it felt like I'd be rinsing it for ages.

Their manager Jamie Oborne has confirmed there will be a video for LIIWMI.

Posted by: SevenSeize 27th July 2018, 12:18 AM

Love It If We Made It is damn gooood *.* the second half especially, hoping the album keeps up to that standard as i wasn't that keen on Give Yourself a Try (which just sounded like they took the Disorder riff and made it 10 times screechier)

Some new song titles and descriptions have been revealed from the album, I'm really looking forward to I Couldn't Be More in Love!

According to the fans who appeared in the music video, it's the song that Healy described in The Guardian as:

QUOTE
There is a mellow song about rehab and he reckons their “Drake-y” tropical house experiment will be their biggest hit.

I'm very intruiged!

Posted by: Hans 10th August 2018, 02:36 PM

Totally intrigued for new material - getting to really like "Love It If We Made It" now - heading towards the 'love' zone! Think it's gonna be an era of needing to let the material grow but that's fine with me!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 15th August 2018, 06:35 PM

It's very different from what I was expecting, it's gonna take me a while to process it before my thoughts. tongue.gif

Posted by: mdh 15th August 2018, 07:03 PM

Pretty crap for their standards.

Posted by: Steve201 15th August 2018, 07:19 PM

Could be huge imo!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 15th August 2018, 07:51 PM

Right: time for my thoughts now I've 'digested' it tongue.gif

It wasn't at all what I was expecting, a lot more pop than I thought. But it's grown on me a lot over the listens. I'm happy each one of the three singles sound completely different from each other, I love The 1975 because they experiment a lot. I can easily see this being their biggest hit, it already has a great position on the Spotify playlists.

Posted by: mdh 15th August 2018, 08:51 PM

It's very 'One Dance'... in a weird way. Regardless of how good it is, I can see it being a top 10 hit at the least.

Posted by: Hans 15th August 2018, 08:59 PM

I like this on first listen - the most instant of the 3 on first listen. I'm really on "Love It If We Made It" at the moment.

Edit: I like it even more on second listen. I think it manages to sound commercial and like a hit without them having sold their soul. It still feels very The 1975. Comparison with Years & Years who sounded like they'd sold their soul for "If You're Over Me" (to me anyway).

Posted by: Cqmerqn 15th August 2018, 10:48 PM

AUTOTUNEAUTOTUNEAUTOTUNE

Posted by: JosephAvery 15th August 2018, 11:08 PM

It's definitely more of a hit than anything else this era and it's catchy too, I've got it in my head after it's finished which is always a good sign. What bothers me though is how low the vocal is in the mix - I feel like I can barely hear him!

Posted by: Jester 18th August 2018, 07:53 PM

TOOTIME is the 1975 do Daft Punk and I approve heartily.

The 3 songs so far from this album have all been ace. Looking forward to it!

2. TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME (it's so damn catchy!)
3. Give Yourself a Try
4. Love It If We Made It
5. Sincerity is Scary

5) Sincerity is Scary

"TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME" spent 3 weeks at number 1 in my chart in September and is in my top 5 of the year-to-date wub.gif

TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME has grown on me quite a bit lately but I can't say the same for anything else they've released so far :/ I imagine this will be one of those albums where barely any of the tracks really hit you individually but as a whole the album will still be great to listen to.

Their favourite tracks from the album are:

It's Not Living (If It's Not With You)
I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)
Inside Your Mind
Love It If We Made It

I don't think I've ever been more excited for an album, bring on November 30!

Another 5/5 review - from the NME!

"They've only gone and made the millennial answer to 'OK Computer'..."

"Matty Healy and George Daniel are not just the most accomplished and creative duo working in pop right now but the closest thing we have to a present-day Lennon and McCartney, a pair whose golden touch makes them near-enough unassailable."

Posted by: Steve201 19th November 2018, 04:45 PM

Looking good for the sound and sales for this! Anyone think it could open with huge sales?

Posted by: DalekTurret32 19th November 2018, 06:41 PM

I'm not sure what to think of this whole five singles before an album comes out, remember Muse's Drones with six of its tracks being released before the album even came out (I still thought it was a great album nonetheless). I would prefer two or three before that album's release because then there's more exciting anticipation.

Here's how I would rank the singles:

5. It's Not Living (If It's Not Without You)
4. Disorder Give Yourself A Try
3. Sincerity Is Scary
2. Love It If We Made It
1. TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME

All great tracks.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 19th November 2018, 06:45 PM

To be fair, Drones had 12 tracks, this has 15!

(and 16 on the Japanese edition)

This is the first album I think I've ever listened to with absolutely no dud tracks. I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes) is one of the greatest tracks they've released, and a brilliant closer to the album.

I love how nuts The Man Who Married A Robot / Love Theme is. It's slightly creepy as well. laugh.gif

Posted by: Steve201 2nd December 2018, 02:24 AM

It is creepy lol, listened to the album once and wasn't bowled over but I think it will grow on me as I like how diverse it is!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 3rd December 2018, 04:21 PM

Oh yes, it's definitely very diverse! Most albums I can't listen to all the way through because it all sounds the same, but I love how different each and every track sounds, whilst still being similar due to being about online relationships.

Posted by: jakewild 3rd December 2018, 05:28 PM

flawless

Posted by: Rooney 3rd December 2018, 07:30 PM

Taken me a good 3-4 listens, but I am really digging the album at the moment. Originally there were a few tracks I liked, but it's growing on me so much. I still think all the singles are the best tracks (and obviously the most commercial) but I really like how honest and open the album is. It's kinda refreshing.

50k sales not to be a snifffed at to open the album with!!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 8th December 2018, 09:54 AM

This album has had the highest weekly sales of a casette since July 2002!

Posted by: dobbo 9th December 2018, 01:21 AM

This record is only going to grow from now. It'll keep getting beaten over and over again like with the highest weekly streams record.

Drops 1-33, the 2nd biggest drop from #1 EVER.

It's stabilised in the lower end of the T40 now at least (current run: 1-33-37-39) - I was not expecting the album to be THAT front-loaded.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 29th December 2018, 03:54 PM

It'll recover well over the next 2-3 weeks as it's 6.99 now as well!

I seriously doubt that.

Resonates with me more than any upbeat "party" song this year bar maybe something from SOPHIE or JPEGMAFIA.

Posted by: WhovilleOdyssey 30th December 2018, 06:00 PM

Based on what they've released up to now (I'm sure they'll be more classics in the future), I think their most remembered songs in 20 years time will be Chocolate, Somebody Else, The Sound and It's Not Living. Possibly Sex, TOOTIME and I Always Wanna Die as well.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 30th December 2018, 06:19 PM

Who’ll remember 1975 in 20 years time though?

Posted by: WhovilleOdyssey 30th December 2018, 06:22 PM

They'll 100% be remembered in 20 years time, and further.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 30th December 2018, 06:26 PM

I know even for the first two albums imo!

Posted by: WhovilleOdyssey 30th December 2018, 06:27 PM

Definitely!

The Smiths were never 'massive' in the 80s, but they had a cult fanbase and incredible albums which led to them still being very fondly remembered.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 30th December 2018, 08:54 PM

Indeed, they did enjoy decent singles chart success by the totp repeats although more top 30/20 hits!!

Posted by: dannjohn 31st December 2018, 10:25 AM

They are, but they're very fanbase heavy. A lot of fans bought several copies of the album as cassettes, vinyl etc with tour tickets and t shirts.

Posted by: Queen Rosemary 4th January 2019, 09:10 PM

"I Always Want To Die (Sometimes)" is really starting to hit me now wub.gif They've already had 3 #2 hits and 1 #1 in my hot 100 from this album. Very consistent. Oddly I haven't given the album much time yet, only 2 or 3 listens.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 4th January 2019, 11:51 PM

Same here that'll change this week now Xmas is over. Don't think we will get another release as they will move into the second album in the coming months!!

The 1975 are performing on The Graham Norton Show next week!

Also, the stage design for the UK tour is insane biggrin.gif

Apparently they've filmed a video for I Like America & America Likes Me, so we'll probably get that around late March/early April.

The lead for the next album is out on May 31st.

(though they still haven't released the She's American video from a couple of years ago apparently because they were angry Trump won)

I love Dan, but I do think he needs to try and ignore negative comments - every musician receives them.

Particularly Foster The People, as Mark's comment was clearly a joke.

I removed it because I was trying to stay out of negativity, but yes.

And calling Matty a piece of shit for a comment when he was in a negative part of his life (he went to rehab not long after that time), yet supporting Cardi B with what she did is ridiculous:lol:

Yeah, but it's just not even relevent to the topic of this album.

Even Matty himself described TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME as "Drake-y" kink.gif it's definitely inspired a lot by songs like One Dance.

There's no harm posting other 1975-related stuff in here, it's not like there's a general 1975 thread to discuss matters like that. It's a bit of an arrogant statement to make, I must say. Matty's a talented musician but I always hate it when artists diss other artists in that sort-of way. It's unnecessary and just makes you look twatty.

Well, all I can say is I feel he's changed since the rehab, and tbh I wouldn't expect him to say that sort of rubbish anymore. tongue.gif He's not as pretentious as he was during that drug-filled era tongue.gif

He's more open as well to the pop world in general, the band and Shawn Mendes have been teasing a possible collab recently.

Someone there also said straight afterwards they were both laughing - that video was so out of context.

I believe it's Owen Davies, who used to be a member but left quite early on to focus on studies, now he occasionally helps with their shows.

Except people there have said he (and the guy) were laughing about it straight after the song. If it is the guy I think it is (Owen), they've known each other since high school.

Matty always goes really emotional during that song.
