BuzzJack Music Forum _ Spice Girls _ Spice Girls at Christmas

Posted by: Jay* 14th December 2020, 10:44 AM

Let's get festive and reminisce about all of the Spice Girls' Christmas related moments! cheer.gif

Spice Girls achieved three Christmas UK #1s in a row - '2 Become 1' in 1996 (24 years ago), 'Too Much' in 1997 (23 years ago) and 'Goodbye' in 1998 (22 years ago)

Feel free to post your favourite performances, and share your memories of the releases of these singles! Do these songs make you feel Christmassy, are they a part of your festive listening?

Posted by: Jay* 14th December 2020, 10:46 AM

They recorded two Christmas covers - Sleigh Ride & Christmas Wrapping - and included them as B Sides on 2 Become 1 & Goodbye. Do you like either of them? Which do you prefer?

Posted by: Jay* 14th December 2020, 10:50 AM

In December 1999, the girls played 8 shows in Manchester and London - 'Christmas in Spiceworld'. The full Earl's Court concert was broadcast on Sky One that same year.

The set list included a Christmas medley of Merry Xmas Everybody and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday:

What are your thoughts about this tour and their Christmas medley? cool.gif

Posted by: Jay* 14th December 2020, 10:55 AM

Top of the Pops gave the Spice Girls their own Christmas special in 1997! It included their performances from 1996 & 1997, and commentary from the girls.

That same year, they recorded a Christmas message that preceded the TV premiere of their Istanbul concert:

I did a SG Christmas Quiz on Insta stories last night and next week some of these moment will also be in it smile.gif

I remember Christmas 1997 so clearly - TOTP, watching the Istanbul concert, listening to my Spiceworld cassette all day long and eating my Cadbury's chocolates. The next day I went to the cinema with my family to see Spiceworld The Movie at my local cinema.

I mean INCREDIBLE times. I cannot put it into words, there's been nothing like it since and probably never will be again.

Christmas was so magical during the Spice Girls era when I was a kid.

Posted by: spiceboy 14th December 2020, 06:09 PM

Did they do their An Audience With around Christmas time too, I always associate it with Christmas 1997 which was my Spice Girls Christmas! Everything I got was Spice Girls related, Istanbul VHS, Spiceworld, Beanbag, lunchbox, drink bottle, posters etc etc etc it was AMAZING! wub.gif

The Spice Girls Christmas #1 3 years in a row is something I'm so proud about but I still do not understand why they didn't release something for Christmas 1999 and try take the record for themselves rather than sharing it!?!? Perfect time to release a Christmassy themed song tied in with the Christmas shows! Not only would it have made them one of the very few to go into double figures for #1s (the following year) but also they would still be the act with the most consecutive #1 from first single as they would have broken Westlife's run (unless they didn't of course lol). It's always been a huge WTF thing for me that they didn't go for the Christmas 1999 #1, 2000 I understand as they called it quits.

It was filmed right at the time they sacked Simon which was the start of November and shown at the end of November so was very close to Christmas. Andi Peters who produced it twas afraid they were going to pull out of filming it as everything in relation to Simon was removed and they had to organise everything themselves which must've been chaos behind the scenes.

I love the 1996 TOTP special they co hosted with Robbie Williams, they were so fresh and full of energy then. heart.gif yahoo.gif w00t.gif wub.gif

I prefer this version

Posted by: pippa 15th December 2020, 01:39 PM

Each year I have an expectation that 2 Become 1 will return to the chart but it never happens.

Posted by: Simon. 15th December 2020, 01:43 PM

What a cute collection wub.gif those TOTP performances are awkward though with the miming.

24 years ago on this date: '2 Become 1' was released as a single!

Posted by: Mr.X 16th December 2020, 10:07 PM

What a classic! What a MOMENT most pleasing to me in my career as a fan cheer.gif

Basically, this is Emma's song ok? Let's establish that first and foremost heart.gif But overall the song is beautifully written and performed by them. PLUS they always delivered it live.

Let's reminisce on their live performances on tour:

Live in Istanbul

A class performance. The costumes? Stunning. The vocals? Stunning. The musical arrangament? Stunning. Bunton's big note? Good enough pirate.gif For their very performance on tour, it was near perfection! THAT OUTRO!

Spice World Tour 1998

Simple, stylish and gorgeous. The arrangement is akin to the Istanbul but overall this is a much more brighter performance and they all sound gorgeous. Personally I would have done a bit more with the staging, but overall it works well!

Christmas in Spice World 1999

This one is probably my least favourite. I thought bringing the fans on stage a bit weird lol They all sound great though and it feels like it would have been a cute moment in the arena.

Return of The Spice Girls Tour 2007/2008

Their best tour moment of this song, imo! It's beautifully staged with the feathers and the polls. And they all sounded amazing too! The composition is perfect, with the added violins in Emma's bridge w00t.gif Together with Viva Forever on this tour, this is up there with their best performances ever in terms of overall quality!

Spice World 2019 Tour

Somewhat understated in such a massive show, this is a nice moment at the end of Act 5. They sounded gorgeous and Emma's big note moment is gorgeous here too. However, it is kind of just there, like a reprise of the 1998 tour but with better production values lol The sound is also maybe a bit meh, the composition isnt that great and it is probably a bit too close to the original for its own good. But it was an emotional moment on that tour and everyone went mad singing the whole thing. Being in that arena was WILD and at points you could hear the crowd singing more than the girls lol it was so loud!

Posted by: Jay* 17th December 2020, 09:33 AM

Those performances wub.gif I think my favourite is the Return of the Spice Girls performance... visually the most interesting, very beautiful heart.gif

For me is a toss between Istanbul and the Return tour. I think the Return tour edges it as the staging is gorgeous but Istanbul has a nice elegant style to it that is lacking on the others and really compliments the song, I think...

Posted by: spiceboy 18th December 2020, 02:47 PM

The Return performance is the best simply amazing! wub.gif

I've always felt this was very much Emma's song too like Wannabe is basically Mel B's song, however my favourite part is Mel B's "Set your spirit freeee it's the only way to beee" love it!

Posted by: JosephCarey 18th December 2020, 03:03 PM

We've had Magic radio on in the staff room recently and they've been playing 100% Christmas songs, I've heard 2 Become 1 a few times!

All 3 songs are in my festive playlist. It was fun to hear Christmas Wrapping on 90s radio today

It's always been a huge WTF thing for me that they didn't go for the Christmas 1999 #1, 2000 I understand as they called it quits.

I've had this thought too. They did kinda sorta have a song out near Christmas 1999...with that Artists for Children's Promise cover of It's Only Rock n' Roll. It was out a week earlier than the big push for the Christmas #1...but considering the level of talent rounded up for that thing, they might have expected it to have some staying power on the charts (it didn't). Side note. Just listened to it again for the first time in ages. I'm glad it was for a good cause...but that version is unlistenable chaos. Also weird to know there's a video out there that features both the Spices and Kid Rock so prominently. I used to see Kid out eating french fries quite a lot. Anyway.

Is there a song we think should have been their attempt at a Christmas number one? The ballads that were recorded in the fall of 1999 were Let Love Lead The Way, Oxygen, and A Day In Your Life. One of those? I have wondered if any of them were created with the thought of a possible Christmas release. Certainly this crossed someone's mind. A Day In Your Life, in particular, sounds a bit to me like an attempt at that. I've thought they may have skipped it...not wanting to release a track so close to the charity track where they're featured. Might not be a good look? Taking on Westlife might not have been easy for them either.

Posted by: Piers 19th December 2020, 08:59 PM

And yes, I have fond memories of the girls tied to Christmases as well. They didn't explode in America until 1997, but I remember listening to their first two albums that Christmas...blaring Goodbye/Sisters/We Are Family as I unwrapped presents in 1998...and even playing Northern Star a lot in Christmas 1999 (the song's always sounded very wintry to me).

I honestly don't love the Christmas songs they recorded as a group. The talking parts of Sleigh Ride sound like they were recorded in a bathroom or something. The version without them talking is a little better...but it's not an especially interesting take on the song. With Christmas Wrapping, I like the production...but I just think the song is awkward...like it's got too many words. I heard the girls' version before the original. I figured it was something they cranked out quickly...and was really surprised to learn it's a cover. I also think it'd be better with the full group ("oh DAMN, guess what I forgot?" should be a Mel B line). I realize Mel B and Victoria were pregnant...but they were still doing quite a lot of promo as a four piece after Christmas Wrapping was recorded. A studio session would have been less effort than all that.

Actually, the 1999 live Christmas medley was the time I think they performed the right material for them. It's loud. Fun. Quirky. Those songs fit them perfectly. Granted, the audio's not perfect, some vocals sound like they're turned too low, and Mel B flat-out forgets the words. But had they really nailed it, I wish that live recording could have lived on as a staple of Christmas-time radio.

Sorry I missed that cry.gif That sounds like it would have been fun!

Yesterday marked 22 years since Goodbye hit #1 in the UK, and today is 23 years since Too Much got to #1. I actually remember tuning in to both of these chart shows and keeping my fingers crossed that they would make it to the top spot. wub.gif

I have a confession... I've never watched Christmas in Spiceworld from beginning to end! ohmy.gif I've seen a lot of the performances in isolation, but not all of them. *gasp* I've decided that tomorrow I'll watch the whole show for the first time *.*

Really curious about whether they got Victoria to do a message. I'll be disappointed if she hasn't!

Posted by: sammy01 24th December 2020, 03:54 PM

She really does think she is royalty these days. I'm convinced she did such a short shit Spice Girls video the other day because she did this and didn't want to over shadow her Queens speech in any way.

Posted by: Chemistry 24th December 2020, 05:10 PM

I don't think I could handle seeing that speech...

Mel C's one has been uploaded now and it's very cute, including a 'hope to see you very very soon' message.

Lovely wub.gif

Posted by: sammy01 24th December 2020, 09:06 PM

Victoria has posted a throwback pic of them dressed as santa on her own social media wishing everyone a Spicy Christmas.

If we don't get a video off Victoria tomorrow on the official social media I think these video messages some up the girls current commitment to the band right now. Mel B, Mel C and Emma dialed in up for doing whatever is requested of them. Geri doing it but half hearted and wanting to not take any spotlight off her own Queens speech message. Victoria saying I'll post something but only on my social media and not a video.

It worries me that the 5 have agreed to things next year and that is the level of commitment each will show towards it.

Posted by: Jay❄ 24th December 2020, 10:52 PM

The Spice Girls once narrowly beat the Teletubies and then the guys from South Park (who then overtook the SG after 1 week). X-Factor contestants released bad covers of sappy songs and most of them got to #1, like 10 years in a row. The charts in the UK have always been a mockery of what the arts and music industry is to be honest...

I did wub.gif Hubby got me Spiceworld on vinyl the reprint and also The greatest hits, sis got me Spice on vinyl and my best friend got me Forever on vinyl. Hubby then also got me a Union Jack vinyl box to put them in and a matching Union Jack vinyl player... sadly the player came damaged so hoping to get that sorted. My parents though really shocked me buying the Melanie C 3 LP vinyl book when I’d not mentioned a word about it as I thought it was WAY too much money. Mum saw it online and bought me it 😮. Not the Spice Girls getting 4 album sales from you this Christmas!

Seriously though that is kind of the point of the vinyl releases I'm sure to have the albums on a collectable format for this sort of thing. I know we would all want to see them on cd printed too but I just don't see people wanting them as presents or to collect them like vinyl.

I buy all my physical music on vinyl these days, Melanie C and Kevin Simm's albums are the only cds I've brought this year I think.

Kevin Simm the one from Liberty X? Didn't even know he had one out! ohmy.gif

Yeah vinyls are an excellent idea for trickle sales now as like you said they are a collectable, and perfect for gifts (the only reason I didn't buy them myself as I knew they would be good gift opportunities for people lol - except the Melanie C one I didn't get that because I couldn't justify the price). I also got Steps picture disc and Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, The Beatles Sgt Peppers, Oasis What's the story, Blondie Parallel Lines and Kate Bush Never for ever. So it's definitely a market that is picking up. I'm having an extension built next year which is going to house my piano (which is currently in my parents house and has been for 2 years now - all that time this year lost playing it due to bloody lockdowns cry.gif ) going to make it a second reading space / music room with vinyl player in it and records in there.

Mama album version and live version with the choir and Mel B and Emma back and forth ending is glorious. I'd take Headlines over Too Much any day.

Posted by: schizo_spice 14th December 2021, 10:21 PM

2 Become certainly eclipses Too Much and Goodbye massively sort of in a similar way to Wannabe eclipsing their entire discography (which kind of saddens me as to certain passive fans it makes them look like a 1 hit wonder)

Posted by: Jamesy 14th December 2021, 10:31 PM

Too Much is a gorgeous song and so much better than Goodbye.

2B1 trounces them both though.

Posted by: spiceboy 14th December 2021, 11:16 PM

I think Too much was their most grown up song up until that point. 2 become 1 and Goodbye are gorgeous but definitely fit into the bubblegum pop vibe wheres Too Much is more mature, and has aged like fine wine!

That intro and the build up nnngggh it gets me every time leading into Mel B's sublime "Love is bliiiind as far as the eye can seee" wub.gif Then Melanie C's power belting moments and her adlibs and the 5 girl harmonies are sublime. The performance at the AMAs (I think it was, a pre-recorded one) is possibly the best they ever sounded.

I certainly appreciate the song for more as an adult that's for sure, I kind of liked it but dismissed it as a child.

I truly love all three of their Christmas #1s, what a high quality run of ballads wub.gif

Even at the age of 9 I really liked Too Much… I played the cassette of it over and over! I strongly associate that song with Christmas 97 and the general feeling of Spicemania at that point.

By the way, today’s date (14th December) is 23 years since the release of Goodbye! drama.gif I remember getting the CDs at an independent record store in Lichfield, and they included a window display promotional poster of Goodbye… which was gorgeous… I had it on my wall for months! Sadly when my parents and I moved house in September 1999, the poster (and seemingly all my other posters) got lost in the move sad.gif

Oh no, sorry about your posters, that must have been so sad as a kid cry.gif

Personally, I think Too Much is classy as hell. It isnt their most immediate of songs but I think it is really a gorgeous track that showed maturity and progression in their sound.

It's probably the one that I ended up appreating more and more over time. Goodbye was always a huge song for me, as it is beautifully written (that lyric 'Look for the rainbow in every storm' is probably one of their best ever) and overall better produced and sang. But Too Much is just pure class and gorgeous. Them melodies are to DIE FOR and Mel B's opening verse is just heart.gif

But Too Much is also on that standard, I think. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. And the video is ICONIQUEE!!!

I mean.... Gerita as Marilyn Monroe?!??!?!

Victoria as Cat-Woman???!!!

Mel C doing martial arts??!?!?!

Mel B!!!!! as MAD MAXX??!?!??!?!?!

BABY BUNTON AS POLTERGEIST??!?!?!

That was proper 90s iconography and you know it!!

Posted by: Mr.X 15th December 2021, 12:30 AM

On another note...

When they celebrate Goodbye25 in two years ( teresa.gif ) they should release a EP with all the Christmas #1s and new, Christmas versions of the songs as well, to celebrate their incredible run of 3 consecutive Christmas #1s!!

Posted by: -Jay- 15th December 2021, 02:22 AM

Omg PREACH it Mr.X cheeseblock.png

Yeah I'm kind of surprised they've not leaned more into their status of having three Christmas #1s and have a release that features them and the Christmas songs. Even if it was just a streaming/download exclusive.

By the way they're in a very close battle with Girls Aloud in Official Charts' Christmas #1s semi-final... I had to go with 2 Become 1! Sorry GA cry.gif

1368 votes for Spice Girls vs 1232 for Girls Aloud ohmy.gif

I have a feeling that if Spice Girls get through to the final, straight people are really going to rally around either Queen or Rage Against the Machine beating them.

I agree -- it's my favourite version of 2B1! Although, I will hand it to Georgie Porgie for the 2007 remix he did for the GH -- that was no easy task turning that ballad into a clubby song. I always wondered why they chose to have 2B1 remixed in 2007 instead of SYBT or NGUOTGT.

Top 40 Most Streamed Christmas Number 1s of all time

https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/b...mber-1s__38001/

It's 1 December, which means the Christmas season has officially kicked off!

To mark the occasion, BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright is revealing the Top 40 Most Streamed Christmas Number 1s of all time, compiled exclusively by the Official Charts Company for Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

Over the past 70 years, the race for the coveted Christmas Number 1 spot has seen one-off novelty acts triumph over established superstars, ground-breaking charity hits, reality TV newbies instantly making their mark, and (on occasion) actual festive songs taking the top spot.

The new streaming Top 40 has been compiled based on the number of times each song has been streamed, all year round, since records began.

Steve Wright counts down the Top 40 chart in Most Streamed Christmas Number 1s now on BBC Sounds here, or tune into Radio 2 on Christmas Day (4-7pm).

mellow.gif Ouch at how low down Too Much and Goodbye are.

Even 2 Become 1 isn't as high as I thought it might have been. I never would have guessed that Girls Aloud Sound of the Underground would have been streamed more times in the UK than 2 Become 1!

Posted by: Spice Girls Net 2nd December 2022, 03:14 PM

Is this Spotify and Apple Music combined plus I’m assuming this is UK only streams

Posted by: -Jay- 2nd December 2022, 03:20 PM

Yep it's the total number of streams achieved in the UK from all streaming platforms!

Too Much and Goodbye felt huge at the time of their releases. Sadly very overlooked in the streaming era sad.gif

Posted by: Mr.X 2nd December 2022, 03:53 PM

Ouch at all of them being lower than like Sound Of the Underground or other less remembered songs. I know SOTU was a huge hit, but whatever...

Honestly, they should celebrate Goodbye's 25th with a re-release of a special Christmas EP with their Xmas #1s and a couple of other tracks... Make it more extra special with each single being given a Christmas remix and VOILA you would have them on Christmas playlists more prominently going forward - and enhance sales and streaming...

Posted by: McAndrew 2nd December 2022, 06:32 PM

They should definitely release a Christmas EP on vinyl and streaming.

Spend some money on Christmas orchestral remixes, maybe including Viva Forever, and they could sell us something desirable. I’d go with something along these lines:

1. 2 Become 1 (Christmas mix)
2. Too much (Christmas Mix)
3. Goodbye (Christmas Mix)
4. Sleigh Ride (Jack Frost Mix)
5. Christmas Wrapping
6. Viva Forever (Christmas Mix)
7. Merry Christmas Everybody (Live)

A Christmas album is such a no brainer for the group to do. Record ten Christmas covers, tack on Sleigh Ride and Christmas Wrapping. Along with Christmas mixes of 2 Become 1, Too Much and Goodbye. They would have a great 15 track Christmas album.

Just do a simple EP with a few Christmas mixes and call it a day. THEN they can get into the studio and do a proper album funky.gif

At this point I wouldn’t say no to a Christmas album. Obviously a new album would be far more preferable, but if they were ever to do something for Christmas, then albums generally get way more attention than EPs!

Which songs would you all choose for them to cover to fill up the track list?

My track list is based on them doing this for Christmas 2023, with the assumption of no involvement from Victoria.

Honestly I haven’t given much thought into whether my choices of Christmas cover songs would be appropriate for them but I chose a selection of popular ones! laugh.gif

Standard CD / Deluxe CD1 / Digital Track List:
1. 2 Become 1 [Christmas Mix] [1996 vocals/production, with additional festive sounding production]
2. Too Much [Christmas Mix] [1997 vocals/production, with additional festive sounding production]
3. Goodbye [Christmas Mix] [1998 vocals/production, with additional festive sounding production]
4. Sleigh Ride [Re-recording] [2023 vocals / with the same structure as the Jack Frost version with no chatting]
5. Christmas Wrapping (Re-recording) [2023 vocals / Emma, Melanie C, Geri & Mel B]
6. [New/Original Spice Girls Christmas Song]
7. Step into Christmas
8. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
9. Merry Christmas Everyone
10. [New/Original Spice Girls Christmas Song]
11. Merry Xmas Everybody
12. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
13. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
14. Christmas Message [Spoken word message from the girls]
15. Goodbye 25 [2023 vocals, Geri instead of Victoria / similar production to the 1998 original / released as a digital single and as a physical single prior to this album’s release… including WOMAN as its B Side tongue.gif ]

Deluxe CD2 / Digital Track List:
1. Christmas Party Megamix [Wannabe, Say You’ll Be There, Who Do You Think You Are, Spice Up Your Life, Stop]
2. 2 Become 1 (Single Version)
3. Too Much (Album Version)
4. Goodbye (Album Version)
5. Sleigh Ride (1996 B Side Version)
6. Christmas Wrapping (1998 B Side Version)
7. 2 Become 1 (Orchestral Version)
8. Too Much (Orchestral Version)
9. Goodbye (Orchestral Version - Full Length)
10. Merry Xmas Everybody / I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (1999 “Christmas in Spiceworld” Live Version)

P.S. It’s difficult to directly compare Girls Aloud’s Sound of the Underground with the three Spice Girls Christmas #1s considering it’s an uptempo vs. three ballads, but what I will say is they’re all incredible x

The real world. SOTU is my favourite girls aloud song and I would have LOVED Spice Girls to have done it. Can see them doing it with a slightly more rocky vibe!

Posted by: sammy01 6th December 2022, 11:12 AM

I'm always a bit shocked they didn't hit the studio late summer 99 to record a Christmas album to tied things over. The xmas tour would have been the promo for it and no pressure to even release a single for it properly.

Same title as the tour Christmas in Spiceworld. 8 covers and 2 originals I'm sure they could have knocked it out in a couple of weeks. If one of the originals ended up being really good could have tried for the 99 xmas number 1.

Posted by: -Jay- 6th December 2022, 02:11 PM

^ A pity they didn't think of that. It would have made sense with it being tied in with a Christmas tour! I feel like there would have been less pressure for it to be #1 because Christmas albums rarely do that well anyway, though with the power they still had in 1999 it surely would have done well.

----------------------------

Spice Girls Best Of has a new festive looking picture and a reshuffled playlist, placing the three Christmas #1s at the top. Unfortunately they've not considered putting either Christmas B Side in the playlist!

Christmas Wrapping was added to Spotify's Christmas Pop playlist yesterday which is pretty major! The playlist has 1,859,917 followers and the track is placed 15th out of 79 songs. So there's a good chance it'll get a lot of plays over the next 3 weeks!

Christmas Wrapping currently has 1,251,673 streams on Spotify, 3,957 of them occurring on 4th December, but that's prior to it being added to Christmas Pop. Will be keeping an eye on this and seeing how much of a boost it gets!

Sleigh Ride is doing okay but its most significant playlist only has 82,450 followers (Spotify's Family Christmas Party - song 77 out of 109). Current stream count is 1,604,856, 4,629 from 4th December. The Jack Frost Edit version total is 284,588, with 542 streams on 4th Dec. That's on a playlist called Pop Christmas! as the 44th song out of 108. It's not an official playlist, but nevertheless it has 16,066 followers.

Posted by: sammy01 6th December 2022, 02:46 PM

Gets streaming Christmas wrapping on repeat! I'd love to see anything bar the usual 10 songs in their top 10 most popular on Spotify. Apart from Holler and Goodbye sometimes switching places and Feed your love doing a few days at number 10 it has basically never changed.

Would be nice to see a 'random' track in there for once.

Posted by: Mr.X 6th December 2022, 03:02 PM

Christmas Wrapping being on that playlist is great!

I don't get that Best Of playlist, it seems pretty pointless that it exists, but whatever. All their Christmas songs should be in there (and since they LOVE doing promo for their solos, why now throw Coming Home For Christmas in there too?)....

Posted by: sammy01 7th December 2022, 12:19 AM

Christmas wrapping did nearly 64k streams yesterday thanks to being added to the Christmas pop playlist. That might not even be a full day of streaming on the playlist either as not sure what time yesterday it was updated and Christmas wrapping added.

Only Wannabe and sometimes Stop do more daily streams than that and it will only get higher as we get closer to xmas. Should almost certainly be their 2nd most popular song on their Spotify top 10 in the next week or so.

Universal really need to jump all over this, get Christmas wrapping #1 on their best of playlist and make it their artist pick. It entering their top 10 most popular in the next few days will boost its numbers too. I'd say put it #1 on their This is playlist too but we have discussed the lack of update for that already. A push on social media too wouldn't go amiss. No reason by Friday with a bit of push Christmas Wrapping cant be doing 100k streams a day easily.

Posted by: Yet!!!!!! 7th December 2022, 12:20 AM

It's only Mel C and Emma doing a duet though, reet?! So it's not really Spice Girls. Sleigh Ride is their one and only Xmas song, outside 2 Become 1.

Posted by: -Jay- 7th December 2022, 07:15 PM

Fantastic to see Christmas Wrapping get such a boost! That was 62,736 streams achieved on Monday, raising its total to 1,314,409. Quite a significant 4.77% of its overall streams was achieved in just that one day!

Only 3,802 added to Sleigh Ride (B Side version) [total: 1,608,658] and 485 for the Edit [total: 285,073] {overall total: 1,893,731}

Looks like Christmas Wrapping will beat Sleigh Ride to reaching a total of 2 million streams!

P.S. Christmas Wrapping just a little behind Stop's daily stream figure of 63,182!

Christmas Wrapping did 151,000 streams on Tuesday! ohmy.gif cheer.gif New stream count: 1,465,409.

213,736 stream in 2 days is a remarkable 14.6% of its overall streams. It certainly demonstrates the power of a big playlist!

Posted by: sammy01 7th December 2022, 08:48 PM

Will just keep growing as we get closer to Xmas too. Christmas day it could actually outstream Wannabe.

Hopefully will shoot into their top 10 tomorrow too giving it another boost.

Posted by: Voodoo 7th December 2022, 08:50 PM

^ Most of these streams were not made within the UK, right? Otherwise it would be Top 200 on UK Spotify.

What's the situation on Apple Music? Does it feature in any big playlist?

Posted by: -Jay- 8th December 2022, 12:16 AM

Christmas Wrapping definitely got a big chunk of those streams from outside of the UK. I wish it was possible to know the streaming figures per country!

Apparently it's only on two Apple Music playlists... "Petit Papa Noel // Noel 2020 // La playlist de Noel" by Digster (worldwide), and "Holiday Hits" by Apple Music but only in Spain!

QUOTE(sammy01 @ Dec 6 2022, 11:12 AM) *
I'm always a bit shocked they didn't hit the studio late summer 99 to record a Christmas album to tied things over. The xmas tour would have been the promo for it and no pressure to even release a single for it properly.

Same title as the tour Christmas in Spiceworld. 8 covers and 2 originals I'm sure they could have knocked it out in a couple of weeks. If one of the originals ended up being really good could have tried for the 99 xmas number 1.

I have said for years this would have been such a no brainer for them in 1999, would have been an excellent way to bridge the time gap between Spiceworld and Forever plus like you said couple of original tracks, throw on Christmas wrapping (perhaps add Victoria and Mel B's vocals if they weren't keen on it being a duet) plus some other Xmas classics, no big commitment to promoting it as could tie it in with the tour plus a few TV appearances, would surely (in the UK at least) have been a bit of a hit. I imagine with their 1999 power they could potentially have challenged for the #1 too.

Then a big strong classic sounding Christmas track as contender for Xmas #1 they would have had a great chance and it could have gone for that 4th consecutive one and claimed the record for themselves over The Beatles PLUS would have broken Westlife's streak at 3 meaning they would also still claim the record for most consecutive #1s from first single with 6.

This is all very what if obviously it may have fallen flat on it's arse we will never know but I think 1999 Spice Girls still had a great chance of doing great things sales wise, if they tacked on another nice ballad alongside the Christmas track release from the album for the Xmas #1 slot they would have been hot contenders.

Now really fantasising on the minimal effort needed for promotion but a great way to boost their discography and keep them out there just imagine

1. Spice (Nov 1996)
2. Spiceworld (Nov 1997)
3. Live Spice or Back In Britain: Live Album (Sept 1998)
4. Christmas In Spiceworld or Spice Up Your Christmas: Xmas Album (Last week or First week Dec 1999)
5. Forever (Nov 2000)

- Release NGUOTGT / We are family (Studio version) in September week or two before final Wembley gigs to promote Live album, one can be a tour montage video, one can be a animated video or a career montage ala IYWHSF. Promotion would be the final dates maybe a couple of UK performances like National Lottery / TOTP. No pressure for #1 as Stop missed it and Viva Forever got them it.
- Goodbye released in Dec 1998 same as before
- Spice up your Christmas (imaginary name to an upbeat fun classic sounding Xmas song, bells choir the lot) / Memories (imaginary name to a magical Spice girls ballad unheard not on an album or maybe Time goes by since they love it so much) released xmas #1 week (kicks Westlife's which means they dare not go up against Forever and release a week later or earlier and Forever is there NUMBER ONE)

laugh.gif I have too much time on my hands.

^ laugh.gif If only this could have happened! I do wonder if they'd have still had the power for a Christmas #1 in 1999.

New Spotify stream count for Christmas Wrapping is 1,624,365. That's an increase of 158,956!

Here are quite a lot of figures I've collected over the years for it:

26th November 2017 - total: 223,667
23rd December 2017 - total: 254,170
5th November 2018 - total: 275,224
20th December 2018 - total: 307,537
9th March 2019 - total: 332,001
23rd June 2019 - total: 335,899
14th September 2020 - total: 442,123
27th December 2020 - total: 560,615
24th March 2021 - total: 572,133
23rd July 2021 - total: 577,670
23rd December 2021 - total: 980,277
24th December 2021 - total: 1,044,738
25th December 2021 - total: 1,123,716 (appeared at #9 in their Popular Top 10)
26th December 2021 - total: 1,136,632 (moved up to #8 in their Popular Top 10 - apparently it stayed within their Top 10 until 11th January 2022)
1st January 2022 - total: 1,170,214
8th January 2022 - total: 1,186,843
22nd May 2022 - total: 1,197,966
30th October 2022 - total: 1,209,124
20th November 2022 - total: 1,220,673
4th December 2022 - daily: 3,957 / total: 1,251,673
5th December 2022 - daily: 62,736 / total: 1,314,409
6th December 2022 - daily: 151,000 / total: 1,465,409
7th December 2022 - daily: 158,956 / total: 1,624,365

It performed decently in December 2021 because of a playlist it was included in then (Navidad 2021 - aimed at Spanish speaking countries, but not an official Spotify playlist). Its best daily figure during Christmas 2021 was 78,978 on Christmas Day. That playlist only has 40k likes, a small following compared to Christmas Pop with 1.88m. Christmas Pop is an official Spotify playlist so will get way more exposure.

Assuming nothing goes wrong like Spotify deciding to randomly remove Christmas Wrapping from the playlist, or push it way down the playlist... it could be on course to have incredible daily figures much close to Christmas, and Christmas Day itself! My prediction would be that once Christmas 2022 is over, it'll have exceeded 5 million total plays on Spotify. ohmy.gif

It might be worth us having a Christmas Wrapping download day on the 23rd December. That is the chart week Christmas day is where streams will be huge. Cant hurt to give it a few more sales whatever happens.

Christmas wrapping is up to #8 on their top 10 most popular songs on Spotify.

Christmas Wrapping on Spotify
4th December 2022 - daily: 3,957 / total: 1,251,673
5th December 2022 - daily: 62,736 / total: 1,314,409

9th December 2022 - daily: 164,211 / total: 1,951,057

Another new daily best figure!

It now has a higher streaming play count than Sleigh Ride. The B Side version has 1,628,305 streams and the Jack Frost OST Edit version has 287,033 streams, combined that is 1,915,338.

Christmas Wrapping has also overtaken Goodbye (Radio Edit)'s total of 1,848,613. So technically the B Side has now outdone the A Side, at least the version that appeared on the single! Although obviously the album version of Goodbye has considerably more streams - it's currently on 16,624,471. The single version has 228,800... so overall Goodbye is on 18,701,884.

4th December 2022 - daily: 3,957 / total: 1,251,673

10th December 2022 - daily: 179,449 / total: 2,130,506

(By the way these dates are the day the streams occurred, they're not the dates of the reveal! For instance 179,449 was revealed on 11th December but the streams happened on 10th December, so that's the date I've given to it)

So it's exceeded 2 million streams in total cheer.gif

It's still stuck in 8th place in their Top 10 Popular list. As suggested to me by Sammy it seems that the Popular list is based on the total plays over the past month. So at this stage Christmas Wrapping is playing catch up. It's achieved over 900,000 streams over the past month but Viva Forever and WDYTYA are 1m+.

I think Christmas Wrapping might move up to 6th in the next update (or possibly the update after that) and leap ahead of those two singles. I'm predicting it won't show up in their Top 5 until 15th December, and it may move up to 2nd place ahead of Stop by the 19th. It definitely won't move ahead of Wannabe though.

Posted by: sammy01 12th December 2022, 10:05 AM

Christmas Wrapping has indeed moved up to #6 on their most popular top 10 on Spotify. Top 5 would give it a lot more visibility so will be good when that happens in the next couple of days.

Probably not, and I would be surprised if it even gets Top200

If they were clever, they would put in on their playlists and then do a small campaign every year. Wild that it doesnt event have a tweet or an insta from them..

A quick insta post with a picture of them and a link to the track or even the Spice Christmas playlist would do wonders for it (and maybe give Goodbye also a boost?..). Get it in their This Is Spice Girls and Best Of playlists at least!!

Posted by: Mr.X 18th December 2022, 12:20 AM

sammy was asking for a download campaign on the 23rd. Could be a good one, or even earlier? Say on the 22nd, so that the streams for all of this week (where it will be at its strongest) are boosted by a download campaign on the thursday (which is also the day where streams dont count as much)?...

Posted by: -Jay- 18th December 2022, 07:29 AM

A lot of these Christmas Wrapping streams are occurring outside of the UK, so I don't think it'll be anywhere close to making the Top 100 official chart here (note that there isn't a Top 200 chart anymore, not since before Summer 2017).

195,013 is its worldwide figure yesterday, while the #200 in the UK was streamed 71,844 times and Christmas Wrapping isn't in that Top 200. So that's at least 123,169 from all other countries, which is a minimum of just over 63%. I'm very curious to know how many streams it's managing in the UK alone, but unfortunately there's no way of knowing unless it does make the Top 200 Spotify UK list at some point.

Unfortunately because it's such an old song it is on ACR (accelerated chart ratio) which means that whatever streams it manages in the UK, the OCC only counts half of its streams going towards the UK chart (note that the full streams total will contribute to its single sales total though).

I wonder if the 23rd, 24th and 25th (and maybe even 26th) streams in total might be higher than the 16th through to the 22nd overall streaming total? I think the main thing about a download campaign would just be to see it chart as high as possible on iTunes, rather than it being able to chart.

It's definitely a shame that their team hasn't reacted to Christmas Wrapping. I don't know why they don't help them out more. dry.gif Quite a missed opportunity to capitalise on these streams and push it further. The mailer promoted "Spice Girls Best Of" and it should have had this (and Sleigh Ride!) added, but nope.

Posted by: -Jay- 18th December 2022, 07:54 AM

Christmas Wrapping has moved up to #2 in their Popular Top 10 list on Spotify cheer.gif Too Much also moved ahead of Mama, not sure when that happened but it was earlier than this particular update.

Just to make this thread more than just Christmas Wrapping... I always say this every Christmas, but 2 Become 1 somehow sounds as its best at this time of year, to me wub.gif I'm also thinking of watching their Christmas in Spiceworld 1999 show again, before Christmas Day. cool2.gif

Posted by: sammy01 18th December 2022, 01:34 PM

The thing with Christmas songs that have become hits in the streaming era is they have grown year on year. That is what we and Universal should be pushing for. Make the most of this year, have Christmas wrapping high on itunes, getting as many streams as possible. Then radio will pick it up, playlists next year outside the big one it is on will be more likely to add it and more people in general be aware of it and add it to their own personal xmas playlists and go to songs. Then in a couple of years it is charting every year.

I thought it would be interesting to see how well it's doing in comparison to The Waitresses original. Their version is pretty popular but it's spread out over 4 versions in their Popular Top 10.

Their daily figures on Saturday 17th:

daily: 169,699 / total: 24,326,624 (this is doing well in the UK: 83,724 of the streams come from here, almost half of this version's daily amount & #142 on Spotify UK)

Hoping for 500k on Christmas day for Christmas wrapping.

I KNOW we are picking at straws here, but would it hurt to inc a link to their Christmas playlist here, and probably tagging the Spotify accounts too? blink.gif

When I saw that post I thought they are just taking the piss. A pointless Christmas related post that could have actually pushed Christmas Wrapping. Why is the social media so shit?

They made a whole video of Posh smiling for 'world smile day' but cant throw something together for a song of theirs that is taking off. Make it make sense.

Regarding Christmas Wrapping - I wonder why the Spice Girls' version ends with "But I think I'll miss this one this year"?

In the original by The Waitresses, after the fourth verse "Then suddenly we laughed and laughed - Caught on to what was happening - That Christmas magic's brought this tale - To a very happy ending [the exact same lyrics as the Spice Girls version], The Waitresses change the final chorus to "Couldn't miss this one this year". It makes sense considering that the last verse is literally "a happy ending", a shift from the mood of previous verses which highlighted why they wanted to skip over this particular Christmas. So the Spice Girls' version doesn't really make much sense to end on "miss this one this year". thinking.gif

I also wonder why the line "You mean you forgot cranberries too?" was changed to "the papers"? thinking.gif As in newspapers?

(Honestly I've never paid close attention to most of the lyrics until now, bar ones that really stand out like "Tesco has provided me with the world's smallest turkey")

Interesting points Jay! I always thought ‘the cranberries’ had too many syllables in the original. And you can’t get fresh cranberries at an all night garage. Also us Brits don’t really make our own sauce. So I can see why they changed it.

That said, I don’t think ‘the papers’ are really essential enough to rush out to the garage for. I’d have gone for “Did you forget a present too”. I often have that realisation on Christmas Eve. Haha

laugh.gif it's what I am doing right now! I have never heard The Waitresses version knew some of the obvious lyrics but wasn't aware of the ending bit, it is a bit strange isn't it hmmmm. I love their interpretation of the first verse "world tours airplanes and babies, met some guy but never the time most of 98 was along those lines"

That would have been a much better and more Christmassy lyric! Now all we need is a time machine to go back 24 years and invade the studio to advise them about this! laugh.gif

I'll be downloading Christmas Wrapping at midnight on Amazon for the download day (Fri 23rd Dec). Will do itunes on my bfs phone tomorrow evening. I know it wont do much but hey it is 99p and I do love those hags and it has been so nice seeing a different Spice Girls song do well.

Speaking of Christmas Wrapping had its biggest streaming update today, it did over 220k streams yesterday. Looking good for 300k+ by Christmas.

You better. I've enjoyed Christmas Wrapping doing well more than any Spice song for a long time. Probably because there is finally something different getting streams, attention and love for once than the same 10 singles.

577,179 streams to go until it reaches 5 million. I wonder if it could do that much on the 23rd and 24th? That would be an average of 288,590 per day... maybe it's too much. It'll surely be well over 5 million after Christmas Day! I could maybe see it pushing to 5.3m, which would put it above the combined total for Let Love Lead the Way (album version + radio edit combined)!

Amazing. Defo on for 400k+ on Christmas day.

I know I probably post these too often but there's not really many major updates left for the Christmas songs, so I may as well make the most of it laugh.gif

So it does look like after the Christmas Eve streams are added that it'll cross over 5 million total plays! I look forward to seeing its daily stream counts for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... and whether Christmas Wrapping can manage to be streamed more times than Wannabe on those days. I imagine it's safe to assume that if Christmas Wrapping does manage to become their top played song on those days, then it would be the first time in their Spotify history that Wannabe isn't their most played song. On the 23rd December Wannabe was streamed 379,093 times, so Christmas Wrapping did just a bit less than 84% of what Wannabe managed.

Christmas Wrapping has still not entered the Top 200 in the UK Spotify daily chart (in fact it's still not in any country's Top 200). On the 23rd the #200 in the UK was streamed 73,817 times. Which means that at least 244,549 of the 318,366 worldwide streams were achieved outside of the UK - that's almost 77%, and of course it could be way more streams than that outside of the UK. It really seems like the Christmas Pop playlist isn't very targeted to UK streamers.

Pretty sure Christmas pop is aimed at the US streamers. Spice circle and twitter have been noticing Christmas wrapping getting some US airplay in malls, on radio ect. I'd happily have it take off in the US the next few years.

If it was to take off in the US in any real way, the odds are that the rest of the world will pick it up sooner rather than later since we're so Americanized.

No, Christmas day Christmas song streams go nuts for obvious reasons. Pretty much everywhere is shut so everyone is at home making their own entertainment which is TV or streaming Christmas songs.

No, Christmas day Christmas song streams go nuts for obvious reasons. Pretty much everywhere is shut so everyone is at home making their own entertainment which is TV or streaming Christmas songs.

In the UK and US Christmas Day is probably bigger, but not globally. All the Christmas streaming records are done on Christmas Eve.

Posted by: -Jay- 26th December 2022, 10:36 AM

That's interesting that they take a tumble globally on Christmas Day! Despite significant increases on that day in the US and the UK. I guess the period of time covered in this update includes countries where Christmas Day is over and therefore has weaker streams, like Australia?

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 2021:

UK (24th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-gb-daily/2021-12-24
01. 1,644,746
02. 1,476,226
200. 72,052

UK (25th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-gb-daily/2021-12-25
01. 2,220,211 (+34.99%)
02. 1,919,706 (+30.04%)
200. 100,679 (+39.73%)

US (24th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-us-daily/2021-12-24
01. 3,318,273
02. 2,883,629
200. 275,652

US (25th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-us-daily/2021-12-25
01. 3,905,195 (+17.69%)
02. 3,433,516 (+19.07%)
200. 270,629 (-1.82%)

Global (24th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-global-daily/2021-12-24
01. 17,420,085
02. 15,471,706
200. 1,126,767

Global (25th Dec 2021) https://charts.spotify.com/charts/view/regional-global-daily/2021-12-25
01. 13,051,932 (-25.08%)
02. 11,471,321 (-25.86%)
200. 1,016,543 (-9.78%)

So based on this, maybe Christmas Wrapping will have been streamed less on Christmas Day than it was on Christmas Eve? We'll find out later!

Thank you for all the updates Jay. Today's update (so boxing day numbers) will be interesting to see how far Christmas Wrapping tumbles. Would be nice to see it pass 6m before it drops back out of their top 10 on Spotify. Either way it is well inside their top 20 most streams songs on Spotify now. Not far off top 15.

I very much doubt it will cross 6million as it would take another 400k to get there but I would be happily surprised if so wub.gif

358k. I'm hoping being in their top 10 till likely mid to late Jan will keep Christmas Wrapping ticking over some streams into the new year. Given it is a monthly rolling chart it should stick around in it till then.

Isn't Christmas Wrapping technically their 19th most streamed song as 2 versions of Viva Forever are ahead of it.

Great to see it still do 120k+ on Boxing day.

Posted by: -Jay- 28th December 2022, 01:43 PM

That's correct! I just went by individual tracks.

Posted by: Mr.X 28th December 2022, 02:07 PM

Christmas Wrapping's success was a breath of fresh air in a year where their musical release really flopped on streaming (some of Spiceworld25 tracks are yet to reach 12,000 streams jesus christ...)

It's overtaking Do It feels deserved but shouldnt be over some of their best songs!! I do hope this teaches them to do better on playlisting their songs more prominently. It is the reason Wannabe does so many streams a day and they could do more like that.

Impressed Christmas Wrapping is still doing over 30k on the 28th. Think it could managed that 6m before leaving their top 10.

Posted by: -Jay- 31st December 2022, 09:19 PM

Updated my last post - Christmas Wrapping is still doing pretty solid numbers!

It's 109,058 away from a total of 6 million. I think there's a likelihood it'll actually reach that total in January!

Posted by: sammy01 1st January 2023, 12:37 PM

We might already be over 6m had Universal put it on Best of and promoted it a bit.

I'll do this one final update so that their December stream counts are complete!

Its daily streams increasing by a few thousand on New Year's Eve! ohmy.gif There's now just 83,452 streams left to achieve for it to reach 6 million. It'll be interesting to see how well it holds up in January. Due to the Popular Top 10 being based on number of streams achieved over the past month, Christmas Wrapping could still be showing in their Top 10 for a few more weeks.

I hope Goodbye 25 will come and Christmas Wrapping get strong Xmas playlisting like last year.

Posted by: schizo_spice 5th November 2023, 12:18 PM

If it’s included on a popular Spotify playlist again I see no reason why not.

Posted by: Mr.X 5th November 2023, 01:18 PM

Stream it bitches

Posted by: sammy01 5th November 2023, 02:04 PM

Christmas wrapping is already doing more streams daily than every song bar the singles minus LLLTW and Headlines. So is already their 12th most streamed song daily and will no doubt be above Holler and Goodbye in a few days.

Posted by: Rebel 6th November 2023, 01:24 AM

Christmas Wrapping is a cover, right? What about Sleigh Ride? I always like their version the best.

Kind of, it is more like a re-working than a straight cover. The lyrics are new for instance.

Posted by: sammy01 12th November 2023, 10:52 AM

Christmas Wrapping is already averaging 16.2k streams a day. That is now more than Holler and only 500 behind Goodbye and 1.5k behind Mama and Too Much.

Should be a week or so before Christmas Wrapping appears in their top 10 on Spotify the way it is going.

Posted by: Voodoo 12th November 2023, 02:40 PM

Is there any chance the snow globe is a teaser for an upcoming Christmas Wrapping lyric video?

Posted by: sammy01 12th November 2023, 03:17 PM

I have no idea but if they are wise they would run with Christmas Wrapping this winter.

Lyric video, radio edit chopping 35 seconds off the start of it, 7 inch vinyl. A lot of the big Christmas songs the artist pushed hard as it took off, like Kylie with Santa Baby, Leona with One more sleep, Mariah never stops pushing AWIFCIY.

Posted by: Not yet... 12th November 2023, 03:52 PM

Still makes no sense that they never did an Xmas song all together, either before Ego Spice left or after as a 4! They even had a Christmas tour!!!!!

Posted by: Mr.X 12th November 2023, 06:23 PM

It would have been perfect for them to a Christmas EP in 1999... Always thought that the tour was meant to be around a single release but alas...

Posted by: Piers 12th November 2023, 10:52 PM

^ Speaking of their 1999 Christmas tour. I wish at some point over the years, their team had released a version of that live Christmas medley to try to get in seasonal playlists and radio play. The full (nearly) eight minute version would have never become a playlist staple. But I'd like to think a four minute cut of the best bits could become a holiday favorite. Just trim out the repetitive sections...Mel B's solo where she forgets the words...and Mel C's solo where she's clearly just goofin' around. Both solos are funny in the context of the concert...but wouldn't play as well in playlists/radio. Admittedly, the audio for that show isn't the best they ever recorded...but...I dunno...would it have been impossible to clean it up a bit?

Release it along with a cut of their concert performance...which really does showcase the sort of joy the group carried when they were at their best.

Anyway. I realize at no point was their team ever going to do any of that. I'm just saying that for me...those two songs merged the spirit of the holiday and the Spice Girls better than Christmas Wrapping...and certainly better than Sleigh Ride.

If Universal does anything with it, then it could for sure... but probably never will knowing how they and the company work with this things

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2023, 10:27 AM

Yeah as I say most very popular Christmas songs build then the artist or label have 1 or 2 years really pushing it to make it a staple of playlists and radio.

If it does as well as last year it will become their most streamed non single. At this rate it could overtake Holler and Goodbye in a couple of years.

The one thing Universal have done is plonk it on loads of the compilations they put out on streaming endlessly. So from about 5 versions on Spotify there is now nearly 20.

Posted by: Sideout 15th November 2023, 06:00 PM

The girls probably don't care about pushing Christmas Wrapping since they don't have writing credits on it.

Posted by: -Jay- 15th November 2023, 06:32 PM

I wish they’d had the idea of writing/recording an original Christmas song, rather than two covers! Even though Christmas Wrapping now does pretty well for them on Spotify, I can’t see it ever outdoing the original and becoming the definitive version.

Posted by: Voodoo 15th November 2023, 06:56 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Christmas music was big in the UK in the late 90's. It was mostly American artists that used to record Christmas albums.

Posted by: sammy01 15th November 2023, 08:40 PM

It went very out of fashion to release Christmas music in the mid 90s in the UK. It was big songs and novelty records.

Spice girls beat Telly Tubbies and South Park to Christmas number 1 didn't they.

Posted by: Rebel 16th November 2023, 04:46 AM

A Spiceworld Globe Umbrella
A Spiceworld Globe ornament
A Spiceworld Globe silver Necklace

The necklace will defo be so cheap made as it has a note about not showerinf in it ect.

This is what most fans want instead of cheaply made merch. Focusing on the music means they would actually have to put some effort in. Look at the low effort of Spice 25 and Spiceworld 25.

Posted by: sammy01 19th November 2023, 05:21 PM

My bauble/ornament came yesterday, just got home to open it. I was very dubious that it would be worth it and not cheap (the stress ball was awful ect) but I'm happy to say it is actually very good. Not sure what it is made of but it is heavy and not made of cheap plastic, maybe some sort of metal or resin. It also looks well made in person and it comes in a black box with a Christmas Spice Girls logo on it.

If this had been rubbish I wasn't going to get the snow globe in the next drop but this has convinced me I will.

This and the rubix cube have defo had more thought put in but also made to a higher quality. Of course £25 is still expensive but artists stores are always over priced, Kylie's one is selling a pack of playing cards for £25.

Posted by: spiceboy 19th November 2023, 05:58 PM

I agree my bauble came yesterday and I think it’s great. It’s like a disco ball for the globe.

I think what we're dealing with now, is that their music is just not the focal point: it's branding - they can call it nostalgia (or whatever) - but it comes off as minimal effort for $. When I get nostalgic for this group, I think of their music and togetherness as a 5-piece: and they are serving neither of those. But when they do, I will be on board (even if it's a 4 piece).

Tomorrow Christmas Wrapping will over take Move Over's stream total to be their 15th most streamed song on Spotify.

Great that it is having another boost and seemingly getting some push from the record company, since it is being played on radio as well!

Posted by: sammy01 4th December 2023, 03:53 PM

It started to get some airplay last year on radio 2, it gets a fair bit in the states too.

The US seems to be where it started from, I'm not sure how but it just started to get a bit of traction in the US last year and that is why it was put on the big Christmas pop playlist. It was added pretty late if I remember like December 3rd so it has only really had 1 year exposure.

It defo needs a radio edit to truly take off.

Posted by: sammy01 4th December 2023, 04:15 PM

Christmas Wrapping has just been added as track 1 to the Spice Girls Best Of playlist, that will certainly help it.

Just need it putting high up on This Is Spice Girls now too.

The proper, ideal time for a Christmas single would have been in 1999 in my opinion, accompanied by a Christmas EP and it would have given them a 4th Christmas #1 or at least give them another really good seller/streamer...

I personally think that boat has sailed..

Was it already mentioned that Geri was on Radio 2 on Monday? Nicki Chapman was standing in for Zoe Ball on her breakfast show. Nicki started playing Christmas Wrapping and Geri said "what is this?!" and then confessed after the song played that she'd never heard it before! laugh.gif She praised it though. It seems she didn't know the original Waitresses version either.

About 2 hours 14 minutes in: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001t03b

I suppose there's no particular reason why she should know it when she'd left the band, it's just funny to think 25 years have passed without her ever being aware of one of the songs in the Spice Girls catalogue. It makes me wonder if Mel B or Victoria would remember it either considering they didn't record it. I wonder if Emma and Melanie C remember it at least? Emma didn't include it in her Christmas show set lists.

Posted by: Piers 13th December 2023, 04:43 AM

^ Ha! How funny. Honestly, I guess I kinda expected Geri to know the song just because it does so well with the group's streaming numbers around this time every year. At least, I'd figure Geri would have more reason to know Christmas Wrapping over anything off Forever, bar the singles she's performed on tour herself.

Geri definitely paid attention to all things sales and chart positions once upon a time...but I guess that doesn't necessarily extend to streaming. I'd just figure she'd have looked on Most Played lists before now and seen that title before.

Posted by: Mr.X 13th December 2023, 08:37 AM

Her reaction going 'what is this' is hilarious laugh.gif

Yeah I was surprised too but it just shows how disconnected with their own catalogue they are. It's literally one of their most streamed Christmas songs, plays on radio and quite popular now. I wonder if any of them even know that it does so well?... manson.gif

I do think they should definitely invest in a lyric video for it. It would do so well at this time of the year, damn!

Posted by: sammy01 13th December 2023, 10:48 AM

I'm not entirely surprised she doesn't know it. It hasn't been till this last 2 years it has taken off. Sleigh Ride was the Christmas song that did better and was promoted more till recently.

Christmas Wrapping is up to #4 on their popular list on Spotify.

I wish Sleigh Ride would get some more playlist attention too, preferably the Jack Frost OST version because it's short and I dare say more palatable for a general audience than the B Side version.

Releasing a new EP like this would be nice, to consolidate their Christmas related songs and Christmas #1s into one release. They could even call the EP 'Christmas Wrapping' so all the songs come up together if someone was to search for that song.

2 become 1 is track #1 on the Throwback Thursday playlist and Spice Girls are the cover photo.

Nice! Although I wish Goodbye would get that playlist placement blink.gif

Well, I hope this isn't the anniversary celebration we get for Goodbye blink.gif

If that's it, I'm pretty pissed off... I didn't expect a vinyl or even merch this time but AT LEAST a lyric video damn...

This does NOT bode well for Forever 25 sob.gif

Poor Goodbye sad.gif It deserves so much better than what the girls and Universal give it...

Here's some stellar moments from over the years that truly showcase what a gorgeous MOMENT in pop history it is. What is your favourite performance from Goodbye?

And whislt I dont love the mix, here is a great celebratory video from LipeHall:

My favourite version is definitely the Earls' Court one. I think the arrangement and vocals really work there and it is overall a gorgeous performance.
After that, probably the Brits' version followed by the 2019 tour, where it really sounded amazing again!

Pretty sure that's it for Goodbye25; another ship has sailed (unless, of course, whatever they have on the table in 2024 will be how it's acknowledged somehow)

Goodbye is one of their lowest streaming singles so I'm not surprised they paid the 25th anniversary dust.

Posted by: sammy01 14th December 2023, 07:43 PM

I wasn't hopefull of anything exciting for Goodbye as they have no album to push from it like they did the Spiceworld singles and Spiceworld25.

I had hoped the might use it as a chance to push Christmas Wrapping though.

I didnt expect much at all, but a Lyric video with the theme of the frozen house from the video would have been cute. That's all I expected to be honest...

We got a 30sec video of a mimed performance from Top of the Tops 1998 in a tweet instead..

I think the only hope for Goodbye is 2025. If they do Forever 25 then Goodbye can be used as a promo tool for it in December, especially if they use Holler/LLLTW to promote its release.

They should do a lyric video for Christmas Wrapping

Posted by: JackFrost's Sack 28th December 2023, 01:54 PM

They won't, as it's not really Spice Girls - it's a duet betqeen Mel C and Emma

Posted by: -Jay- 28th December 2023, 02:22 PM

Girls Aloud have a handful of songs with vocals from less than five members (some even with just one member!) and they're credited as Girls Aloud. So it doesn't matter that it's only two of the Spice Girls on Christmas Wrapping, it's still considered part of the group catalogue!

Exactly. Often in groups this happens, even in boybands and it is more about the song itself than the group. Anyway, it is very much a Spice song and the record label should do a lyric video for it at least! It doesnt even need to mention that it is only Emma and Mel C

Who gets the royalties for it - all Spices, or just those two?

And I guess - a lot (99%) of PCD songs are sang by one person!

I believe that up until Geri left, they used to split everything equally but after that, they started to get individually paid according to their input on any given song/album as most artists do. I remember reading somewhere that this was due to if they were still credited as 'Spice Girls' in the writing credits (as they were in the original albums), rather than individually, Geri would still get royalties for sales of songs/albums she wasnt a part of, hence the individual accreditation after she left.

When it comes to singer-royalties, that's a different thing as the publishing works differently there. So I would imagine that the group gets royalties from that song and then gets distributed equality between all. They don't have writing credits on that song though, so they wont get any from it.

All in all, they are probably each seeing like £100 per year each from the song's streams across streaming platforms, radio play and the odd sale here and there. If they were credited as writers too, Emma and Mel C would be getting a bit more.

Not to mention Feed Your Love, which is basically a Mel B solo song.

I wonder who wrote the alternative lyrics in Christmas Wrapping? Because it only credits the original writer of the song, Chris Butler. The updated lyrics are so specific to the Spice Girls and the UK that surely they came from any or all of the following: Emma, Melanie C, Matt & Biff. Maybe they thought it would be too cheeky to get writers credits on a cover version, even though they made changes?

Yeah it is quite odd isn't it? I would imagine they did all a bit, but then for credits clearance, they didnt bother much with adding their own credits. It was, at the time, only a b-side that probably would be forgotten forever more after its inclusion in one CD of Goodbye. Had they imagined it would take off on streaming (the concept of it didnt even exist at the time lol) they definitely would have added it lol

It is probably why none of them even bother to mention it. They get no money from it's success lol

Of course they get money from it, otherwise singers wouldn't record cover versions.

That statement was an exageration, of course they do get it - as explained in the posts before that. But as singers they get quite little in terms of royalties - it is in the writing that you get the most royalties, and they are not credited as writers.

It also just goes to show that they should have done an original Christmas song and a covet of I Wish It Could Be Christmas!!!
