In 1992 The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode finished 5 places ahead of Dr Alban's It's My Life in the End of Year charts.
Has there been a closer finishing weekly top 2 in a YTD? I know there are many times a number 2 outsells some of the number 1s that kept it down but I'm talking about number 1s that outperform number 2s at all times in the weekly charts - not when they drop below the single that was number 2, like Robert Mile's Children, for example, outsode whatever was number 1 when it was number 2 in this way. Is that totally clear?

Try 1984. For two of the weeks Frankie Goes To Hollywood were at number one with Two Tribes, they were also at number two with Relax. They finished at numbers four and three in the year-end chart. The number one that year was, of course, Do They Know It's Christmas. The song at number two that yuletide, Last Christmas, was at number five in the year-end chart.

In the 1991 Year End chart Enigma's Sadness Part 1 finished one place higher than Seal's Crazy and they were concurrently 1 and 2 in the weekly chart of 19/01/1991

In 2017 Shape of You was #1 and Castle on the Hill was #3 on the YE.
Additionally Galway Girl was #5 and Perfect #6, which was the top 4 for one week upon the release of Divide, however Galway Girl charted above Castle on the Hill that week so I guess it breaks the rules |

Blimey, talk about resurrecting a thread from the dead...
Not quite numbers #1 and #2, this is a numbers #1 and #3 which is possibly even more impressive. Back in 1977 'Name Of The Game' by Abba (a number 1) was the 16th biggest seller if the year while 'Rockin' All Over The World' by Status Quo (a number 3) was at number 17. For 2 of the 4 weeks Abba spent at number 1 Status Quo were at number 3. Strangely the number 2 single for those two weeks 'We Are The Champions' by Queen ended up at number 23 in the year end chart. It suggests that sales were very close between the three singles for those two weeks. |

We are the champions wasnt as big a seller as you might think only 23rd despite going gold in that year must have under performed. Much bigger in the digital era

1990 steue miller at 24 & dee lite groove in the heart at 26. Only 7 copies between them when they were at 1 & 2 in the weekly chart!
