For people who have seen it - I'm assuming the comment was hyperbole but was it anywhere near as controversial as A Clockwork Orange?

"Mother, an exercise in torture porn, may be the vilest movie ever released by a major Hollywood studio." SUCH extreme reactions |

"Despite lower-than-expected box office grosses, director Darren Aronofsky's latest effort "Mother!" is fast becoming the most controversial movie of 2017 thanks to a brutal finale that has horrified and disturbed. The backlash from audiences was so severe that Paramount released a statement Monday defending its decision to release the polarizing film in the first place." Wow "This movie is very audacious and brave," the statement said, according to indiewire.com. "You are talking about a director (Aronofsky) at the top of his game, and an actress (Lawrence) at the top her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell. This is our version. We don't want all movies to be safe. And it's okay if some people don't like it." This post has been edited by jase.: 18th September 2017, 10:13 PM |

I srsly need to see this, I can usually wait until DVD release but the trailers gave so little away and from the reactions, it really feels like such an 'event', one of a kind film and these reactions are making it even more so!

Even with the meaning, it was just effectively a woman getting abuse in her own home for 2 hours or so, not getting any revenge or any comeuppance at all. The scenes towards the end were unnecessarily cruel / disturbing.
I don't mind films where there isn't a happy ending - I love Funny Games, Wolf Creek etc but this doesn't have a real PURPOSE imo. It's just cruel. I liked the start of it and the idea of it, it just was executed in a horrible way. I'm not saying anyone here is doing it, but the patronising comments from reviewers who loved it are so annoying. 'You don't get the references, you need to do your research!'. Sorry, I shouldn't have to go out of my way to do research and look up references to enjoy a film imo. |

I was very hyped and intrigued to watch this following the reactions, wasn't expecting to like it but...I think I really did? Even though it was very ridiculous and 'what the f*** have I just watched', I really appreciated the originality and that it kept me gripped. Jennifer Lawrence deserves another Oscar nom at least, she gave a great performance that carried the film.
It feels strange to say I enjoyed it given how awful a lot of it was, but it definitely stands out and will be memorable, probably ending up as one of my movie highlights of the year. |

I loved the first two thirds and the 3rd act confused me, it was wild. But after reading up on what it’s based on, I processed the whole thing in my head, and after a few days and think it was quite genius in hindsight... and it makes me want to watch it again knowing fully what it’s based on.

I'm very much of the same opinion as Joe. Also, the final 10 mins or whatever, I don't understand what all the hoo-ha is all about haha. But tbh, my level of disturbance is always gonna be matched to the original 'Martyrs'.
I think I liked it when watching it, but I definitely appreciated it a whole lot more after being told the meaning behind it. Although, it does suck if you have to read up about a movie after, in order to understand it haha. |

Finally got around to watching this, and what a cracking piece of cinema it is. It's just such a shame it won't find a bigger audience. For a film (bizarrely/brilliantly) marketed as a mainstream movie you'd think more people would have seen it and they really should as it actually has a lot to say. It's not particularly subtle about it and by the end it's sledgehammer time but it's a point well worth making. Anyone complaining that it's too graphic or unnecessarily grim is missing the point. It HAS to be so in order to force us to look at ourselves. It's not 'Him' or 'mother' who are to blame for the evils in paradise, or even Adam & Eve. It is all of us together
One of the best of the year for sure and one I will definitely watch again and again. |
