MNEK premiered his new single "Tongue" on BBC Radio 1 tonight. The FADER, which premiered the lyric video, mentioned that his debut album is slated to be released this year and that song is the lead single from the project.
From http://www.thefader.com/2018/02/28/mnek-tongue-premiere:
This new one is actually very good! Very MNEK, but with a fresh twist and I quite like the Funk/R&B vibe to it. Won't be a hit though.
Will be interesting to see the collaborations on his album, he's written for so many huge artists that it wouldn't surprise me if he got Stormzy, Zara and Duo on his album etc, 'At Night (I Think About You)' remains amazing.
'Tounge' is actually a pretty decent comeback, I don't think it will be a huge chart hit though but it's already on Spotify!
I really like Tongue - its different; hope it becomes a hit
The spoken chorus has a similar flow to 'Forget About Dre' I've realised!
Actually properly love 'Tongue'! I'd say it's the best thing he's done since 'The Rhythm'.
Loving 'Tongue' - such an earworm
I love Tongue but it feels like it was written in mind for someone like Zara Larson or Little Mix and he decided to kee it. I still love it anyway and I hope it's a huge hit somehow :win:
TONGUE IS SO GOOD, easily the best thing I've heard from him since Never Forget You. I feel like he's bound to get another big hit EVENTUALLY, I just don't know when.
Lyric video
Best thing he's done in a while, it almost makes up for his terrible 'Don't Stop Me Now' cover.
AMAZING PACKAGE - seems like a breakout hit for him hoping it has traction.
The video has helped it rise a bit on i-tunes.
Really hope this gets playlisted/ becomes a hit as it deserves to.
That video is SO good, I’m gonna need this to be a hit pls
That video is so camp I love it.
I really wasn't sure of this song at first but it is such an earworm after a few listens!
Is there any chance of 'Tongue' doing anything now?
I have slightly tired of it, but I'd still like to see it be a hit.
Tongue is such a good song so I'm looking forward to the album!
Just getting into Tongue now, really liking it! Can't see it doing anything officially though
His new single is called "Colour" and it features Hailee Steinfeld. It will be out next week.
From https://twitter.com/MNEK/status/1000094007278612480:
OMG
Omg hyped
It's a shame he has to put a random pop girl on to try and get a hit and couldn't get one on his own merit with Tongue
Omg YAAAAAS Hailee is such a star and Tongue was a bop so this era will hopefully continue in that vein.
I'm not the biggest fan, but I loved Tounge and his part on BBYGP2, so I am optimistic.
Hailee She really is such a star and deserves to be the next big pop female.
Here for this - I'm sure it'll be amazing. I loved 'Tongue' tbh.
I hope it's good. I haven't really liked anything of his despite wanting to (except 'Blinded By Your Grace Pt. 2' )
I'm willing for him to pull through and hopefully give Hailee another smash coz she really deserves it
YAY!
looking forward to the Hailee colab!
Colour is incred, it's pretty chilled but it's a bop with quite a euphoric feeling - perfect for summer and they fit so well
Doesn’t sound like a smash, but it’s such a feel good summer track
Omg crying at the artwork
Can't get over how good this is omgggggg
OOoooh yes Colour is a bop
Think this could be a big hit - very on trend without sounding overly generic. Chorus bops too.
this feels like it could be a huge summer hit if it gets support
it is kinda saccharine lyrically but so melodic and hooky!
It sounds ok on a first listen
Damn, Colour is so much better than I was expecting. It's a very Summery tune, and I'm loving the drop.
Quite like this - it’s very summery. Sounds quite similar to another song though? I was thinking ‘Rain’ by the Script but I’m not hearing it so much now.
'Colour' music video
SLAY
Why is this not #1 everywhere tbh, ffs
Cahill Remix of Colour is out tomorrow
Actually shocked to see how much radio are sleeping on MNEK, he will need to chucks dua or Little Mix on his new one!
Also that video is FAB
His team needs to get him some kind of Spotify payola because these past two songs ARE hits that wouldn't sound even slightly out of place in the charts or on Radio 1. It's frustrating, I really feel like he has such huge potential and song after song just seems to get slept on.
He's making some of the best pop music around right now; 'Tongue' and 'Colour' are relatively substanceless but you can't knock the catchy production, he deserves to be a lot bigger than he is.
LOVED Tongue (after a few disappointing solo singles!) but Colour is so bad/cringy
"Language" will be released soon. Maybe this week?
From https://www.instagram.com/p/BmdCkSwhz-u/:
I just don’t see him getting any airplay anytime soon and I hve no idea why
New single definitely coming on Friday
"Crazy World" will be released this Friday and Language is the title of the album. There's an Amazon pre-order link which says that the release date is next week and you could check it https://www.amazon.com/Language-MNEK/dp/B07FLGJWDN/.
"Crazy World" will be available as an instant grat on Friday at midnight local time and the release date of Language (*) will be revealed as well.
https://mnek.lnk.to/language
(*) I've realized that the Amazon pre-order link says 'import', which means that the release date should be this week (August 17) instead of August 24.
The album will be released on September 7. It has 16 tracks and "Paradise" made the cut.
"Correct" will be released tomorrow as an instant grat.
Not really feeling either Correct or Crazy World, I do really love Tongue and Colour though.
To be honest all of the stuff in this thread sucks. Absolutely worlds away from the likes of At Night.
This is out now
'Tongue' has been the one slice of goodness from this whole thing, the rest has been bleh.
I like Correct and liked Tongue too. Colour I grew to like, but I feel a bit meh with MNEK at the moment...
But I can't help but feeling they're kinda flogging a dead horse now. For whatever reason he just isn't clicking or seemingly gaining fans/ support.
He's performing on Sunday Brunch today, not sure which song though.
Actually, as a body of work this album is pretty solid. Girlfriend is a certified banger.
Oop
@MNEK
Scared of seeing the sales? Reminds me of when alesha dixon "deleted" her single a few years back to avoid the shame!
Apparently these were the figures (from Popjustice)
Good Lord, it's like the whole county completely forget his existence! He has 92K followers on Twitter too...
It is a major flop... but then kind of expected given Tongue and Colours didn't exactly take off in any big way.
Also his 'bigger' hits weren't even included on the album.
There just seems to be no interest in him as an artist. Its odd really that he isn't really supported anywhere especially given as he has featured on 'Ready Four Your Love' had a bit of a break through with 'Never Forgot You', but there seems to be a void around any form of radio support or just momentum.
Maybe he should stick to producing for others
I actual feel sorry for him, he’s a good producer and ‘Tounge’ would have been a smash for almost any other artist!
Wow that is really bad :/ Not heard the album yet oops but christ.
I feel so sorry for him He's so talented and 'Tongue' and 'Colour' are such bops as well.
I don't think we will hear from him as a solo artist from now on unfortunately.
I’ll never understand why radio never bothered to support anything from this era, ‘Colour’ sounds exactly like a song that Radio 1 and Capital would heavily rotate.
I like how real his disappointment is on twitter though, like I previously said ‘Tounge’ would have been a smash had he giving it to Dua, Zara or Little Mix. I can’t see any future solo material though and I guess his only way to comeback would be a duet which isn’t impossible considering the artists he writes for.
I wasn't expecting the album to do that well but it flopping quite that much is rather shocking.
at least he can continue writing for other artists and get success that way, but flopping so much with all his solo material must be tough. hope we at least get his vocal on the occasional dance dj song anyway (and tbh I can't say I've listened to his album or really got into his recent solo singles either).
Gah I feel so awful for him, he really poured so much into this and he delivered fun solid pop bops that sound like smashes. I just cannot understand how he can’t gain any traction he’s so passionate and I can’t imagine how tough and frustrating this must be for him. He deserves so much more.
I think maybe 'Never Forget You' was just an exceptional fluke for him and he was just never destined to properly make it as a solo artist. (or maybe if he'd not followed that single up with a selection of shit tracks)
I think he can still get hits as a featured artist ala Ella Eyre, RAYE etc. though.
Right. Never Forget You was on a hit because of Zara. Noone cares of him on the track.
Hes incredibly unlikeable & thats why only 800 people bothered with the record. Obviously theres other issues. Hes not particularly commercially viable as an artist. I assume the only reason Virgin released this album was so they could tie him into a publishing deal.
Btw when I say hes unlikeable; I am speaking from personal encounters.
It's sad this album has performed the way it has, I've had it on loop on my Spotify for pretty much all the last week and it's a really strong, consistent pop/R&B album - 'Phone' in particular is my favourite. Like others have said I didn't expect a massive amount of success for it but to not even make the top 100 is pitiful. He can at least hold his head up high that he's produced an album that he totally believes in and that is of real quality.
It's sad more so because we've got some amazing pop writing and performing talent in this country who, for whatever reason, the public just don't get behind in their own right. Ed Drewett is another one who springs to mind, I've got the samplers from his unreleased album and it's criminal he's never enjoyed the success he's had writing with or for Little Mix, Olly Murs and The Wanted on his own merits.
I'd say those minor successes were mainly because Radio 1 were supporting him as a new act and they playlisted those first 3 singles then leading to him obtaining a Top 40 single. Since then/Never Forget You, radio genuinely haven't touched him.
Apologize for bumping this, I just realised Anne Marie co written Colour and it would be on Speak Your Mind instead had her label didn't reject the song.
