BuzzJack Music Forum _ R&B and Hip-Hop _ Whitney Houston: General Chat

I'm in a massive Whitney mood right now so I thought I'd open a little topic to discuss and celebrate the legacy of one of the most iconic artists of our time, taken from us way too soon heart.gif

I keep finding my way back to her discography right now, though shamefully I've not delved into the albums just yet. It's a mission I intend to start soon (alongside Haus and Jay hopefully!!) but the singles alone are just brilliant. Greatest Love of All is my absolute favourite but there's so many I keep going back to - I Wanna Dance With Somebody, So Emotional, I Will Always Love You, Didn't We Almost Have It All, One Moment In Time, How Will I Know, I could go on.

Tickets for "An Evening With Whitney", the hologram show, go on sale tomorrow. There's ongoing debates about the ethics of hologram tours but for me, this is the closest I'll ever get to seeing Whitney in concert, celebrating and experiencing the magic of her music in a live setting and the London date is the day before my birthday, so I'm definitely going to nab a ticket heart.gif

I've been getting into Whitney's music massively this year too! I've listened to her first two albums in full so far and they're great! Whitney's one of those artists that can sing anything - the big ballads, the joyous pop bangers, the R&B jams.

Been really into It's Not Right and Million Dollar Bill, both in their original forms and their most known remixes (Thunderpuss and Freemasons respectively).

I got into Whitney more after her death tbh. Which is a real shame but that’s what made me take real notice of her as I wasn’t around or able to remember her when she was like at her peak.

I kinda stanned Celine and Mariah more of the divas whilst growing up too and Whitney was one I paid little attention too although my mam loved her.

But I’m also thinking of listening to her albums as wholes over the next few weeks.

Any idea on where to start. Is it best to start from her debut and listen in order? I feel I’m able now to really listen without judgement and I’ve already seen so many amazing live videos from her now which blew me away! Since I watched films and documentaries of her I feel I like her a lot more now.

The stuff from the Bodyguard is probably what I’d say is my personal favourites from her though singles wise.

I often play her compilation and Greatest hits albums now though.

The second album is my personal favourite. I think the first two albums are basically just killer all the way through, the rest are good but have hit and miss moments.

10 years ago today since Whitney passed. This lovely tribute featuring behind the scene footage over the years was released on her YouTube today:

I think 'All the Man That I Need' is my favourite Whitney song. heart.gif 'I'm Every Woman' would probably be favourite uptempo.

Oh wow, 10 years already cry.gif

All The Man That I Need is a massive favourite for me too, my grandmother bought it for me after me saying that I liked it on the radio so it holds a special memory for me wub.gif

Wow 10 years! That's mad. I've just been shuffling my 90s playlist and 'My Love Is Your Love' came on - a wonderful one to remember her by today. heart.gif

i find most of whitney's 80s hits unbearable (Dance with Somebody and I Will Always Love You).

I mich prefer her 2000s era.

30 years since 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack was released! What an impressive era for Whitney, pretty much non-stop for two years if you include the tour. 'I Will Always Love You' is obviously a classic but I must admit it's the single I return to the least; 'I'm Every Woman' and 'Run to You' are two of my very top Whitney songs; 'I Have Nothing' is still brilliant, even after endless X Factor renditions; and 'Queen of the Night' is an underrated gem.

I finf a lot of 80s music tarnished for me due to it being overplayed in clubs. MYLIYL era remains underrated.

Also just realised that today would have been Whitney’s 60th birthday cry.gif Time sure does fly by, she passed at the age of just 48.
