I think she got the opportunity of a film soundtrack single and jumped at it. Unfortunately the film wasn’t a big success. It was an utterly bizarre decision and screamed sell out, which is funny as she was peddling 'authenticity' at that time. I also think she had a difficult time grasping pop music and what people wanted from her. It was either terrible and cheesy like I Want Candy or something more rock-inspired, dreary and serious. She's only leaned into making credible pop music from VOM onwards. I'm glad to see her embrace it because self titled was easily her best output since Northern Star. Also, the b-sides this era were far better than a lot of album tracks. Fragile is one of my favourite Melanie C songs ever! |

Already Gone and Fragile are arguably the best tracks from this era and they both were b-sides. Melanie 'B-Sides Are B-Sides For A Reason' Chisholm. Agreed! In addition to those, my other favourites are: Out Of Time, This Time [Single Version], Understand, and Protected. She's only leaned into making credible pop music from VOM onwards. I'm glad to see her embrace it because self titled was easily her best output since Northern Star. I'm at the point now, where I prefer her 'Melanie C' album over 'Northern Star'. Both are solid records, but the cohesion within her self-titled album has won me over. |
