As streaming gets more and more popular with 17 festive entries in the top 40 this week alongside a new generation of seasonal classics from the likes of Buble, Coldplay, Bieber, Leona and Grande, could there ever be a point where one week that every space in the top 40 is a Christmas song ? The chart after Christmas would be where that situation would arise and if this happened would the OCC do something about it?

I really doubt this would ever happen, non-Christmas songs still get plenty of sales and streams during Christmas time after all!

See this week's commentary for a possible rule change.
I think there will always be songs around that "outsell" the Christmas songs. OTOH, we may end up with very few new releases from mid-November onwards. |

Very very unlikely. There'll always be an Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber or Adele song near the top selling more than enough to make the top 40.

There's another 12 (I think) Christmas songs outside the Top 40 with a couple only just missing out (Coldplay, Justin Bieber) so I think a 50% Christmas Songs Top 40 will be upon us next week. Although with Eminem's album I can see River & two album tracks entering the Top 40 too which could keep some Christmas stuff out.

Christmas songs should be separated into sub category of retro songs - if not banned from charts as it deviates normal chart
As every song after few weeks of absence in the charts Chart should be all about NEW songs only IMO This post has been edited by ankietarrr: Dec 16 2017, 06:58 PM |

^ the chart should be about what sells the most, so if an oldie gets to #1 cos it sold the most, no problem

I reckon the entire top 40 of the potential catalogue Christmas top 40 singles will be made up of Christmas songs

There will always be new songs in the xmas chart a just look at the streaming chart now and each November December there will always be artists looking to promote their material on big shows etc which will sell both a single and albums!
