I would say if it's marketed properly, it could be Abba. I'm sure it was announced they were releasing two new tracks in December. May not do much on streaming, but could do big things physically .... smile.gif

Had forgotten Abba were supposed to be back this winter - interesting...!!! It's so hard to say how it'll do. Same with the new Westlife. Though mentioning them both in the same breath when not specifically talking about "I Have A Dream" seems disingenuous to Abba...

There are not going to be any New ABBA 'Singles' released this Year. That idea has now been 'delayed',
until at least March 2019.
This has been confirmed by both Bjorn and ABBA's friend and spokeswoman, Gorel Hanser.

If and when the 2 New ABBA Songs are released, they will not just be on Download and Streaming. ABBA plan to release
several Physical Formats of them too. That means CD Singles, 7 Inch Vinyl, and maybe Coloured Vinyl. This is an attempt
to over-come the fact that 'Old' Acts tend to struggle with Streaming, and cannot get big hit 'Singles' any more. (As can
be seen by how Madonna, Kylie and Take That Singles have struggled in the past few Years).

ABBA made the mistake of revealing their 2 New Songs far, far too early. They announced that they'd
recorded them way back in April. (They actually recorded them in June 2017, so they'd already had them
recorded for 10 Months, when they told 'The World' about them, in April).

The problem lies in the fact, that the New Songs were to be 'sung' and promoted, by 4 ABBA Holograms -
The 'ABBAtars'. However, ABBA are having problems with the technology, and The 'ABBAtars' will not be
seen on Tour until 2020 now. (If ABBA decide to go ahead with the 'Project' at all). The 'ABBAtars' look as
ABBA did on their 1979 World Tour.

In July, Benny said that he and Bjorn had a 3rd New ABBA Song 'in mind', for The 'ABBAtars' to perform on
Tour. If The 'ABBAtars' idea is dropped, then the 3rd New ABBA Song may just never get recorded.

A 2 Hour Global ABBA TV Special was to reveal The 'ABBAtars' on Tuesday December 18th. It has now been
delayed until at least March 2019. Just like the 2 New Songs. (This has been confirmed by ABBA and the BBC).
The TV Special may never get made now. The idea may just be forgotten. We will see. The 'ABBAtars' were
supposed to 'sing', (mime), the 1st New Song in it - 'I Still Have Faith In You'.

Both of the previous two year's Christmas #1s were #7 on the final chart of the preceding October...

Post Malone and Swae Lee have this year's Christmas number one then!

I mean, the John Lewis advert song didn't break the top 10 the last 3 years. So that's unlikely.

The new rules have made me far less excited or interested. It's not a popularity chart anymore. It's a "which current song is best at marketing?" competition.

Christmas no.1 isn’t even a big deal anymore. It used to be hyped because the song at no.1 the week before Christmas would be expected to have the highest sales week of the year with people purchasing it for Christmas. That entire idea is basically gone now with streaming. It’s like literally every other week.

I do agree, I think - though culturally I hope it'll always hold something - also I'd argue the X-Factor killed the buzz of the Christmas Number 1 for the most part, though 2009 was good fun!

Bit of a shame about the ABBA delay. Although having said that, next year is 20 years since Mamma Mia! was launched in the West End so it'd be more fitting to release it then. Shame there's not the modern equivalent of Steps, B*Witched etc to perform a medley of their hits at the BRITs!

Sigala featuring Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana to mash an Abba medley into "Just Got Paid" live at the BRITs?

It really depends what artist John Lewis use tbh.

X Factor and Cowell killed it.

He only SLIGHTLY moved the release date recently due to the songs flopping. He loved that he had killed the tradition.

Even if it weren't for X Factor hogging the Christmas number one for all those years the accolade would still be not that big of a deal today in the modern streaming era. Clean Bandit non-eventfully getting it 2 years back said it all. There is no race anymore. If anything X Factor kept the 'Christmas number one' relevant as everyone was trying to beat them, now that X Factor has declined a lot in relevance it's not much of an achievement to beat them in the charts nor does anyone care about a 'stop X Factor going to #1' campaign as it's a given they won't be #1 anyway. And of course most people consume music by streaming and not downloading these days.

It stifled the chart and made 5he race stagnant. No one was releasing for the Xmas no.1 because of X Factor. That meant the race was killed by Cowell. Now Cowell Fix Factor's gone, the race just has never recovered.

do you not remember Military Wives or The Justice Collective, whose campaigns proved so popular that X Factor pushed themselves a week back in order to secure the #1 instead of repeating the embarrassment of losing the #1 debut (which happened in 2009)? there were tons of Christmas chart campaigns during peak X Factor relevance, those aren't there anymore.

of course, James Arthur would have actually beat TJC if they released the same week but X Factor went for the safe route to secure the #1 debut.

Charity campaigns might still go for Christmas no.1, but no else will be, and no one else was, going for it.

The Christmas #1 is probably not even out yet. Shallow won’t last that long.
