A full crowd will be in attendance for a race over the famous National fences at Aintree on Saturday for the first time in nearly two years as the Betway Grand Sefton Chase takes up its new place on the calendar.

Previously run on Becher Chase day in December, the 2m5f handicap chase has been brought forward a month following discussions with trainers and the race attracted 22 confirmations on Monday, including last season's Midlands National winner Time To Get Up and ante-post favourite Caribean Boy.

ITV Racing's Ed Chamberlin said he was blown away by the Breeders' Cup viewing figures on Saturday night, when the channel is normally the "sacrosanct" preserve of Ant and Dec.

Chamberlin was joined at Del Mar by colleagues Francesca Cumani, Johnny Murtagh and Luke Harvey for the two-day meeting, which featured on ITV4 on Friday and Saturday night before the Breeders' Cup Turf, won by Charlie Appleby raider Yibir, and the Classic muscled their way on to the broadcaster's main channel.

Those races, off at 11.40pm and 12.40am in Britain, yielded a peak viewing figure of 370,000 and an average of 222,000. The Saturday peak on ITV4 was 281,000 against 143,000 on Friday with average figures of 222,000 and 140,000.

The racing community is in mourning for former jump jockey Tom Greenway, who has died at the age of 38.

He rode more than 40 winners under rules as an amateur and a conditional during a career in which he also came back from breaking his neck in three places in a fall at Towcester when only 21.

Greenway, from a racing family, started out in point-to-points and joined Ginger McCain, then spent time at Henrietta Knight's yard before a successful spell with Nigel Twiston-Davies, a highlight of which was riding a treble at Perth.

St Mark's Basilica has been named horse of the year at the Cartier Awards after winning all four of his races in 2021.

The three-year-old, trained by Aidan O'Brien, landed the French 2,000 Guineas, French Derby, Coral-Eclipse and Irish Champion Stakes.

After he was retired to stud following an injury, O'Brien said: "St Mark's Basilica is possibly the best horse we have ever had in Ballydoyle."

Paul Nicholls was at Windsor Castle picking up the medal for his OBE from the Prince of Wales on Wednesday, but hopes to receive something equally shiny this weekend when firing two bullets at Cheltenham's Paddy Power Gold Cup.

Nicholls starts the core winter season – his 30th with a licence – chasing a 13th training title and has the chance to showcase his skills with Lalor and Simply The Betts, who make their debuts on Saturday for his all-conquering Ditcheat yard.

The trainer knows what it takes to land the Paddy Power, which is worth a healthy £160,000 having won it with Al Ferof in 2012 and two years later with Caid Du Berlais.

"We've got some nice horses to run at Cheltenham over the three days," he said. "Obviously, there are the two nice horses in the Paddy Power Gold Cup, but that race is as competitive as ever."

Stable jockey Harry Cobden is set to ride Lalor, who lost his way for Kayley Woollacott, but is Paddy Power's joint 5-1 favourite with the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat.

Simply The Betts, the mount of Bryony Frost, is no forlorn hope at 12-1 having been transferred from Harry Whittington's yard.

They are not the only smart performers Nicholls will run as Politologue and Rouge Vif contest Sunday's Shloer Chase, which has the makings of a mini Champion Chase with Queen Mother heroine Put The Kettle On and the classy Nube Negra engaged.

Trainer Liam Burke has opened up about the trauma he has endured over being caught up in the fallout from the raid on a County Kildare stud farm after the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board revealed on Tuesday that all racehorses who were tested at the premises on November 9 returned negative for any prohibited substances.

The IHRB took hair and blood samples from all the racehorses that were present at Ballintogher Stud in Monasterevin, from which equine therapist John Warwick was operating.

In a departure from normal procedure, the regulator on Tuesday responded to pressure to release the results given the cloud of suspicion that has hung over racing for the past fortnight.

Shishkin, the new star of Nicky Henderson's Seven Barrows stables, will miss Sandown's Tingle Creek at Sandown after not quite pleasing the six-time champion trainer, who will instead aim his two-time Cheltenham Festival winner at the Desert Orchid Chase over Christmas.

Honeysuckle etched her name further into the history of the Hatton's Grace Hurdle when running out a superb winner of the Grade 1 for a third time at Fairyhouse.

The 2-5 favourite extended her unbeaten record under rules to a perfect 13 races under Rachael Blackmore, tracking the pacesetting Stormy Ireland in third for most of the 2m4f contest before being sent on turning for home.

She easily left Ronald Pump behind in second, with Abacadabras sticking on for a never threatening third.

A second female jockey says she was verbally abused by fellow rider Robbie Dunne and reduced to tears.

Former amateur rider Hannah Welch said the incident after a race at Chepstow in November 2018 was a contributory factor to her giving up jump racing.

"He was shouting and swearing, standing very closely in front of me. I was crying. He did not stop," said Welch.

Dunne is before a disciplinary panel accused of bullying and harassing jockey Bryony Frost.

But Roderick Moore, representing Dunne, said the jockey insisted he was "very calm" towards Welch.

fall that led to Freddy Tylicki being paralysed "could easily have been avoided", racing pundit Jim McGrath has told the High Court.

The Sky Sports analyst appeared as an expert witness in the £6m damages claim brought by former jockey Tylicki against Graham Gibbons over the incident at Kempton in October 2016.

McGrath said the stewards on the day should have found Gibbons guilty of dangerous riding, for "riding in a way that was far below the standard of a competent and careful rider".

There have been no finding of dangerous riding in Britain since 2009.

Four horses, including Tylicki's mount Nellie Dean, were brought down during the race.

Tylicki was airlifted to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury, which means he permanently uses a wheelchair.

Gibbons denies causation and negligence and his defence is that the fall was a "racing accident occasioned by the horses coming together".

"This was no more than a racing incident and your evidence that the stewards should have found dangerous riding is without any foundation at all," said Patrick Lawrence QC, representing Gibbons, to McGrath.

Jockey Bryony Frost put a tumultuous week behind her to claim an emotional victory in the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown on Greaneteen.

Frost had given tearful evidence on Wednesday at a disciplinary panel, with fellow rider Robbie Dunne accused of bullying and harassing her.

But she had reason to smile at Sandown after a brilliant win on the 12-1 shot Greaneteen.

It earned a 12th win in the Grade One Tingle Creek for trainer Paul Nicholls.

Last season's explosive Ryanair Chase winner Allaho had to show guts to go with all his class as he prevailed in an attritional running of the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown.

The leading hope of trainer Willie Mullins' seven-strong team in the Grade 1 contest, Allaho stuck on gamely to hold off stablemate Janidil on the run to the line, with Melon third to complete a 1-2-3 for Ireland's champion trainer.

Robbie Dunne has been found guilty of "bullying and harassing" fellow jockey Bryony Frost.

An independent panel found Dunne in breach of four charges of conduct prejudicial to the reputation of horse racing.

The panel heard evidence over several days about a "weighing-room culture" following charges brought by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA).

The Martin Keighley-trained Back On The Lash will face eight of the rivals he beat in last month’s cross-country chase as he bids to complete a rare double over course and distance in Friday's Glenfarclas Crystal Cup (3.00) at Cheltenham.

The seven-year-old relished his first attempt at the unique cross-country course under Sean Bowen last month to score a narrow victory by a neck from Singing Banjo.

Former jockey Graham Gibbons was responsible for the fall that left fellow jockey Freddy Tylicki paralysed from the waist down, a judge has ruled.

Tylicki had brought a £6m damages claim against Gibbons over the incident at Kempton in October 2016, and at the end of November a five-day hearing was held at the High Court in London.

Judge Karen Walden-Smith has ruled that, on the balance of probabilities, Gibbons' actions during the race were "undertaken in reckless disregard for the safety of Mr Tylicki".

Gibbons has denied negligence and causing Tylicki's injuries.

In a written judgement issued on Tuesday, Judge Walden-Smith wrote: "In this case, the actions of Mr Gibbons riding Madame Butterfly on 16 October 2016, colliding with Nellie Deen mounted by Mr Tylicki, were not mere lapses of concentration or inattentiveness.

Gosh I hadn't heard about that incident! Certainly shows the dangers of horse racing, even if in this situation it was found to be a deliberate action something like that could realistically happen to anyone in the sport.

Saw the incident and it is probably the worst incident I've seen in horse racing.

The 28-1 chance Tornado Flyer caused a big surprise with victory in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park.

It completed a double for jockey Danny Mullins, who also won on Jacamar earlier on the card.

Trained by his uncle Willie Mullins, Tornado Flyer had not won any race for two years.

After moving to the front, he went on to finish nine lengths clear of Clan Des Obeaux, twice a winner in the past, with Saint Calvados third.
