Good evening, and welcome to the results of the 34th edition of the Buzzjack Song Contest in Colpi Golpes, the capital city of Batidas.

We started off with 40 nations joining us for this contest before 40 were whittled down to 28 after the semi-finals. Thankfully all 28 nations in the final submitted their votes so nobody will be suffering from the dreaded 33% reduction. Only Kingdom Of Shadow were unable to supply their votes by the deadline for reasons still unbeknown to everybody. The points from each voting nation has been calculated, verified and I can reveal we have a winner!!!

It has to be said that the standard set in BJSC XXXIV has been incredibly high and I’m sure everyone at this moment in time haven’t a clue who could win. With so many excellent tracks entered it really is an open playing field as to which nation will win.

In 15 minutes we will start the evenings main event. Before we proceed please welcome to the stage the lady who stormed Batidas to their debut victory last month. Give a huge cheer for Agnes Obel performing ‘Riverside’.

Changed my mind, and am now thinking Le Kid'll win - which I don't really mind, as it's grown on me. Kopecka or Herzebania I'd prefer to win though, of the favourites.

It grew on me a lot from the semi to the final. Swedish male, should be right up my street. That said, I guess I should be loving Le Kid, but 'Oh My God' is their only track that I'm particularly fussed about.

Don't expect much from Stella, but I do have a lot of confidence with my next entry

Good stuff, glad you like it, it's definitely a grower - I'm not sure if that's a help or a hindrance though in BJSC...it entered my personal chart as low as #48 before ascending up to #1 in the last few weeks!

I was speaking as a general point that pop voters are far less likely to turn out for more alternative tracks than stereotypical 'indie' voters are, which I don't think anybody would dispute!

It's fantastic, Those Dancing Days are one of those bands who I've very much been meaning to check out for years (since 2008?) and this song gives me a good excuse to dig deeper. Any highlights you recommend other than this song?

I don't understand quite where you get this diagnosis from Phil. You not qualifying for a few contests with fairly mediocre pop tracks doesn't mean the contest went indie for 10 contests! The only AT ALL mildly alternative contest was the one Delphic won, and even that was fairly poppy for an 'alternative' track, and perhaps the one Roll Deep won where Lo-Fi-Fnk, Robyn, Sia and The Golden Filter came top five, but that aside...

Ten would be extensive use of Hyperbole to describe the period of 22-26 where there were a higher number than average indie tracks. Two of those I got drawn into the indie semi and crashed out of at the expense of some ridiculous garbage. So yes, the contest did have an indie period before common sense reigned and we had three Scandipop winners on the bounce.

I see the argument that XXV was a fairly alternative contest, and maybe XXII and XXIV at a stretch - but let's not forget - along with those fairly alternative appearances from The Good Natured and Olafur Arnalds in XXII's top ten, you also had Glee, Caroline Jonsson, Keri Hilson, Linda Bengtzing, Elin Lanto...in XXIV you had Leighton Meester, Danny, Suzie McNeil and Tania Foster to go along with Delphic and Beach House. Nowhere near as 'indie' as portrayed - and XXIII really wasn't all that alternative at all.

I wouldn't say one or two 'indie' (which really just seems to be a strange placeholder name for darker, brooding electro tracks that don't have massive pop choruses) tracks doing well constitutes an 'indie period' at all, given we seem to get that pretty much all of the time We've only had one 'indie' winner (in Delphic), and Scandipop pretty much dominated most top tens in that period anyway.

Well, yes!

But I think it helps that the hosts aren't automatically in the final. I think the reasoning behind a lot of hosts flops is that a 'free pass' was a good way to introduce people to something not likely to smash but that you wanted everybody to hear anyway.

Only 1 point between the winner and runner up in that contest too, although I'm not sure that Little Jackie would have been THAT inspired a winner, even if I did give it my 12 A certain set of disqualified votes that were sent DURING the live final being presented may or may not have changed the winner of that contest to something more to your liking I couldn't risk accepting them though. It would be very easy for example for somebody to vote now and give their 12 to Isconia for example to boost them into the lead, having seen how the results have been going.

I think I have my track for the next contest sorted. It's not really indie (well, it'll probably count as indie in the mind of Phil ) but it's definitely not stereotypically BJSC-friendly - but then, if some of the sorts of tracks in this top five can do well, perhaps they'll be receptive to the track I have in mind? It'll certainly be interesting to see how the contest takes to it.
