Six weeks of constant airplay before the release date is what made the charts boring back then.

Wes - Alane was another Box-helped hit, think all these were too - Alizee - Moi Lolita, Scooter - The Logical Song, XTM - Fly On The Wings of Love, O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei, Dana Rayne - Object of My Desire. Anything radio would sneer at for being too 'cheesy' basically, early noughties radio seemed much more focused on indie-rock acts of the era. As mentioned you were often sick of the song by the time it first hit the charts, I remember Justin Timberlake's 'Rock Your Body' had airplay for weeks and weeks before it first charted to the point where it reminds me of the Easter holidays but it wasn't released until the end of May! Alizee was surprisingly A-listed on Radio 2 Another curious phenomenon was dance music used to climb the throughout the week, and they'd benefit from the weekend effect - where they'd have a big late surge and debut on Sunday much higher than their Tuesday midweek position suggested. So what happened with Basshunter, Micky Modelle and Cascada later on the decade, did Radio 1 stop its aversion to slightly cheesy eurodance? They slowly opened up to it, although with Cascada only much later (none of their early songs like ETWT got playlisted), and Micky Modelle were always shunned. Basshunter got shunned with Now You're Gone, but when it reached #1 Radio 1 playlisted it. Then they supported the followups. Radio 1 never shunned funky or retro house music. They shunned a lot of europop and eurotrance though, acts like Flip & Fill and Scooter would never get support. They did support some acts though, like Ian Van Dahl, Lasgo and DJ Sammy during their first releases. This post has been edited by Euphorique: 30th November 2016, 06:12 PM |

Just out of interest, did they shun David Guetta, Showtek and Vassy - Bad when in was released in 2014 (I think they did iirc) as that is arguably the most eurodancey song this decade so far that has made the charts? I can understand Flip and Fill but not really Scooter, as I thought they were deemed 'cool' enough at the time. This post has been edited by The Emperor: 30th November 2016, 07:07 PM |

A lot of the later 'retro' style eurodance in the 00s could be percieved as cheesy too, as cheesy as Flip and Fill or Scooter, like Uniting Nations 2 later hits, Sunblock or Star Pilots for example so were they played by Radio 1?

You can find the Radio 1 playlists here, just do a little search.
