Ellie’s new single, River, is a cover of Joni Mitchell’s song originally released back in 1971.
Despite being limited to Amazon Music and YouTube, the song went #1 in the UK and became her first #1 since Love Me Like You Do which was almost half a decade ago!

As I suspected it is a Joni Mitchell cover, in time for Christmas. Would be nice if it could chart (and hopefully those of us who don't have Amazon Music can actually hear the song soon enough) as it's a rather underrated track, the original is one of my fave Christmas songs

She sounds stunning on this! I'd love to.do her to more stuff like this that shows her voice off as she's kind of wasting it imo with identikit Spotify filler songs. Anything that gets new recognition for this song is fine by me, what an underrated masterpiece

Finally! This is beautiful, she does the song proper justice. May even give it a download sale seeing as I've no interest in switching to Amazon Music. So pleased the song is about to be a chart hit for the first time in any form too. A top 10 eventual peak seems rather likely.

From a quick google search it appears that Amazon music paid subscribers grew by 70% in the last year to 32 million, with Spotify being at 100 million and Apple Music at 60 million. Maybe Amazon has been having a greater impact on the chart more recently but it's just taken this exclusive song to realise.

boring cover? I looooove it, theoriginalis an 11/10 and this is a 10/10... I love her past covers (Your song, how long will I Love you) but this is even better, think it's the best cover she's ever done
you can really feel she's connected to the song, it's not like this boring factor contestants when they do covers, I love Alexandra Burke or Leona but their covers are like if she were reading a shopping list not singing a song from the guts and feeling the lyrics
the song really reminds me of some Adele songs, especially the bit that goes I'm selfish and sad and I've gone and lost the best I've ever had

I also hope that with this cover a whole nerve generation discovers Joni Mitchell, she's easily the best American songwriter of the 70s and her album Blue is a masterpiece, my favourite part of the album is the sequence River-A Case of You, two amazing tracks, a real double-punch, A Case of You is also amazing if you've never heard it... the opening lines are the best start of any song ever in the history of music!!!! SERIOUSLY...

The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is that it must be due to Christmas songs being played more at the weekend.

don't you get the feeling that Amazon is now trying to remain low key and not over-doing it, cos the early sales this week were crazy, can't get why now suddenly she's slowed down so much... think they're under-reporting on purpose or they over-reported earlier in the week

I have to say, River is Beautiful but this is the most corrupt number one ever
Either way, I think it will lead Ellie back to the stripped ballads for the next album. And I’d be happy with that.

That would be fab, whilst I love her more alternative uptempo stuff (the Halcyon and Lights eras) and want her back to that moreso, her voice is so wasted on generic stuff like Close To Me, Hate Me and On My Mind so for her to stay stripped back like this would be great.

Tbf the original is only regarded as a Christmas song because the beginning sounds like jingle bells for like 2 seconds and is "set" round Christmas because it mentions it's about to be Christmas

He could have gone for: AIWFCIY is the first song to top the charts for the first time which has "Christmas" in the title since Merry Christmas Everyone.

While I do understand the speculation at the charting position of this song last year. I always loved her version and even played it for my parents this year with my dad adding it to his 'Christmas Playlist". Would love it/think it could become a Christmas classic if added to other streaming platforms and pushed. Its lovely

It was an odd setlist on paper and I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy the show - I like the Brightest Blue album but haven't given it loads of my time, so the setlist having pretty much the entire album was slightly worrying! The past album tracks felt like odd inclusions when so many hits were missing as well, but honestly it was a REALLY good show and she had my full attention the whole way through (impressive as I was extremely tired and almost nodding off before the show began ). I've got a new love for the album now and stuff like Only You and Aftertaste felt really well suited to the show. I think she still could've perhaps included even 2 or 3 more of the hits (On My Mind, Starry Eyed?) as the audience reacted best to the ones she included but otherwise it was great.
(did laugh at the woman sat in front of me... she looked disgusted as Worry About Me began and went to the loo )

You often find when an artist is a decade into their career, they play a smaller fraction of the new music to accommodate the hits. Don't blame Ellie for doing the whole Brightest Blue album but choosing old album tracks over hits was definitely interesting and unusual for a tour setlist from a major popstar.

i can't say i've ever really seen an artist (unless their just starting out) do a whole album in full, especially like Joseph said, 10 years in. I compare it to Will Young's show a few years ago - The Lexicon Tour - where he did about2 songs from the Lexicon album and the rest were all hits.
To think she didn't do some of her more well known hits: Starry Eyes, The Writer, Figure 8, Explosions, How Long Will I Love You, On My Mind, Your Song etc. On paper I don't think people may know a lot of these, but, when they heard they'd be like "oh yeah I know this one".
I mean she did do her biggest hits I suppose: Burn, Love Me Like You Do, I Need Your Love but to think she performed lesser known hits like New Love or Powerful were certainly choices (which I approve).
I still find the Lights situation fascinating, the fact it's a closer on her show when it absolutely bombed in the UK is still quite a magnificant thing... has there ever been an instance before when someones biggest flop in their home country is their biggest hit worldwide? Maybe Anastacia 'Left Outside Alone' and most of Kelly Rowland's career I suppose

some of my favourites do the new album in full Phoebe Bridgers does it with her current album on the current tour and Ben Howard does the same... Ben Howard is actually the extremist, he refuses to play old songs, if someone requests old songs he gets upsets and has been known to even leave the stage
on the other side of the spectrum, Tori Amos didn't play any song from her last album when doing the album tour

River is not doing overly well on Spotify unfortunately - current total is 690,861, with 9,236 streams worldwide on 22nd December.
It's a really lovely version of the song. I wish it could be added to some of the main Christmas playlists, although I suppose Spotify aren't going to feel like helping out a former Amazon exclusive.
I have to admit I soured towards River in its year of release when it prevented Mariah from #1 At least Mariah made it to #1 the year after.
On the subject of Ellie's Christmas songs, O Holy Night does pretty well for her - total: 17,952,827 with 171,462 streams on 22nd December.

was thinking the same the other day, I randomly heard it on an elevator and I thought oh how nice and then went to check on Spotify and noticed it wasn't on any playlist, zero, nada, which is a pity... but I guess thats the price you pay for being Alexa's pet song for a year... guess something similar is happening to Taylor's Farm

River is entirely average and it is fully deserving of its rubbish performance on every platform. Even 3 years of YouTube has only given it 3 million streams. No-one purposefully chooses to listen to it for a reason.
