Have you ever sent an entry that feels like it should've been sent by another country? Do you prefer to stick to your 'sound' or switch it up regularly?
Here are some samples:
Mar x Full Crate ~ Man x Woman
probably the least 'Danaelanda' I've ever sounded. also it was a massive flop, oops.
Flume - Insane (feat. Moon Holiday)
quite far from the usual house or dance-pop we send but quite the tune really.
and if I had to choose one from this year..
Oliver Nelson - Found Your Love (feat. Heir)
not exactly a 'wtf no way dan sent this' entry but a bit different from the usual.
'insane' i definitely agree with for you.
ermmm idk i think all my entries are pretty typical me although a few people have said:
Shaun Frank / Delaney Jane / KSHMR 'Heaven'
Kove / Moko 'Hurts'
Samantha Urbani '1 2 3 4'
don't sound anything like an aeroche entry (i don't exactly agree on the former two but maybe they're a bit more generic?)
R O Z E S 'Everything' i thought sounded like a syndare entry instead of an aeroche one so i'll say that too
i don't really know, i consider myself a dance nation but then a lot of people say alternative still so it's up 2 u rly
I'd say it's quite hard for me as my sound is all over the place usually! But I'd say anything with rap in (Sjus, All I Got) or something quite blog poppy (MOWA, Invader Girl, She's The Queen) aren't my usual thing. I reckon it's easier for others to judge me on this!
I'd defo agree with all of Leww's suggestions and Dan + Insane.
SECOND THOUGHT: Jinja Safari 'Mermaids' is probably the most indie/alternative I've ever gone and I haven't really delved much into that genre since.
lol Found Your Love was my favourite entry :')
Spotlight of course just wanted to test the waters but clearly it was a bat decision
I feel I will never have an actual "style"
And Heaven is my favourite Aerochentry too (but I still like some others you've sent)
i agree with u there too patrizio, i think the most quintessential you are the completely kitsch / vibrant numbers ('EPA' / 'lone digger' especially are the two that i compleeetely associate with kluminican republic, despite the former being a massive flop but its so u)
Parra For Cuva Ft Anna Naklab- Swept Away
Still the only time we've sent dance and all our other entries have been pop, country or r&b
I guess 'Kool-Aid' is the main one for us <3
Some could say 'Babs Seed' as well though we've sent other bright, cheesy pop tracks before like Picture This or Prom Night (even if I guess they're not exactly the same thing)
I can't really describe my sound exactly as it can be quite varied, but out of all my entries, I think Gimme Sin and Melba's Call have a slight urban/garage edge which is a genre I don't tend to associate with my country. Also DIA from this year stands out as something very different from the rest of my entries and I noticed a lot of people that don't often give me points point it and vice versa, so I'd say that stands out from the norm of my sound!
Do I win.
Deaf Club 'Moving Still' was a shoegaze-y indie track among a sea of mostly electronic songs so a pretty big outlier in the Persephonia catalogue (although I did send a few other indie songs - Vampire Weekend, Frankie & The Heartstrings, The Temper Trap - in the v early (i.e. Egabbac) days). And I guess Orphic Oxtra as well. Lol ~
EDIT: Wonder Villains 'Zola' also falls in roughly the same category I guess so not a total outlier.
Most of what I sent this year!
Well, I guess Call It Off, Obvious, Apart and People are probably within the Altyr wheelhouse but Get This Right, Hands, Ice Cream, Me Minus You, Something About You and Show Me Love definitely aren't.
I think really I've been diluting my sound for a while now and what was once the standard Altyr entry rarely ever occurs now, only Obvious could really have been entered by me in any other year and not sounded out of place.
Probably Wave Racer considering that's the least anthemic out of the seven that I've sent so far
It does mean I've really toyed with different genres tho
When I sent 'Calm Down', it didn't really feel like a Deandria entry for whatever reason, but it's my favourite entry of mine
Probably 'Sit Still, Look Pretty' and 'Slow Dancing' as well now that I think about it. And all of these are my last three entries lol
My two dance enteries tbh and I would also say Zara to an extent
So many highlights in this thread already. More shoegazey stuff like 'Moving Still' please Persephonia, Mermaids is one of my favourite Klum entries even with all the great stuff you've sent this year, Electrovamp is Electrovamp (i.e. crazy good), Insane is great etc.
I think mine, even though I do try to switch up a bit as a matter of course, clearly has to be Goodbye Tomorrow, it's such a shock listening through my list of entries. A good shock, but a shock nonetheless, my other rap entry, Charisma.com, feels so much more like it's within my remit. Zhu & PinkiePieSwear are possibly another couple, they're very 'chilled dance' for me and I don't normally go that way in the slightest, my entries tend to be quite... brash, I guess is a good term. Which is why I wouldn't include Owl Vision because despite sounding different that's heavy electro and the vibe itself isn't that unusual.
(Ryan would say all my early stuff sounds out of place now, and yeah, it was all just airy-electro-pop and I don't tend to send that much any more but I can still send stuff that's SIMILAR, I mean I sent one of my poppiest tracks ever to the first contest this year)
I think only "Dame La Ola" and possibly "Lana Del Dre" are the only two I could consider not my "sound" (the former especially!!! ).
Probably Spitfire and Take Me To Church, but the latter became so huge that I almost think of it as a big pop song these days. It felt very different for me at the time though. Possibly Shut Up + Dance too but I've always loved a huge chorus, regardless of the genre.
I try to switch things up often but to be fair most of my entries are just from various pop or dance sub-genres.
I don't think Ashton has really varied from it's sound. I think the only real difference from when this first started is the language of the songs! 7 years ago I would never have sent an entire year's worth of foreign language entries. I just didn't listen to any! Now some of my favourite songs aren't sung in English.
I wouldn't say I really had a specific sound even if some entries do stand out to me. I just like to send whatever, regardless of genre.
I went through old threads here and came across this
I'd say the most I've deviated from the Danæviia brand recently would be 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8pOVirjGF0' from last year which is more heavy than I would usually go for (being metal-inspired which I didn't expect a Danæviia entry ever would be) - and I suppose my synthpop entry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOKyHF5Bsr4 from earlier this year which both ended up flopping.
Since I last posted:
- Colleen D'Agostino 'Disaster'
- MXMS 'Gravedigger'
- Holy Esque 'Tear'
- Sharon Van Etten 'Jupiter 4'
- Sophie Beem 'Skyline'
- Dave Silcox / Little Nikki 'Tell Me'
i think!
Idk, I've sent enough hip hop/R&B in addition to the electronic comfort zone such that the former two can't really count as a massive divergence.
Perhaps this is a bit different to most entries of mine, but that's not because this kind of music doesn't appeal to me - more because you guys are so on top of artists like Rina and I rarely discover pure pop early enough to make inspired, veto-compliant entries!
And these may not be recognised as different because I know my entries are universally unappealing to some - that is to say I'm not sure if people who dislike both alt electronica and alt rock bother distinguishing between the two in the same way that I don't care about the difference between grunge and black metal - but I rarely listen to music with guitars so these were unusual for me.
Maybe the following stand out for me since last time:
Real Lies - North Circular
Tina Guo - Super Mario Bros
DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ - All The Beautiful Things U Do
Swim Deep - To Feel Good
The rest veer between a few genres I usually go for, but the spoken indie-electronica of Real Lies and Swim Deep aren't massively typical of my usual sound, and I can't see myself sending anything like Super Mario Bros again. DJ Sabrina is more like a Skall entry.
Funnily enough, these four are four of my favourite songs of the last five years so maybe I should switch it wildly up more often - but none made the top ten, even though a couple definitely deserved to.
Singerpurear don't have a Sound. The day people can predict what genre we enter is the day we retire from BJSC
Once upon a time anything weird or witch house wouldn't have been our standard entry sound but they've become the norm for us now. I think these stick out as ones though.
Boston Bun - Paris Groove (novelty, doesn't fit anywhere really)
Generik - Last Night (dance but sticks out like a sore thumb dance and we don't do that at all really )
Jonathan Bree - You're So Cool (Almost didn't list this one as it does belong to my typical entry sound but the slowness of it I think qualifies it to be here. Summericia never really send really slow songs outside of the odd occasion. :') )
