Geert Wilders is apparently ahead in the opinion polls for the upcoming election in the Netherlands. It seems bizarre that a country with a reputation for being one of the most liberal in the world up to now such as the Netherlands would have a majority supporting Wilders, who has made anti-Islam comments and supports administrative detention (which has been condemned by human rights groups). Also his party is anti EU, which would probably lead to the Netherlands having a referendum on continued membership if he wins.

The Dutch use PR so it's less likely that this vile scumbag will be in a position to form a government and thus further threaten the EU. They don't have a majority support, they're looking at 33 seats in the latest poll. You need 76 for a majority in the Netherlands.

Added to this that Dutch levels of anti-EU feeling is literally wholly contained to this party at around 20%. Nexit won't happen and while this asshole might win the election, he won't be prime minster.

So him failing because of the PR system is basically the same position as Le Pen in France then, whom very few people think will win there.

The fear among a lot of people around me is that, after the unexpected Brexit and Trump being voted next POTUS, anything can happen. Even though it is certain that he (or any major party) won't get a majority, people are still afraid of the effects of him and his party becoming the biggest in parliament.
Another problem is that there are about 6 parties that are (for now) expected to obtain 10-25 seats, which will make it all the more difficult to form a well functioning government.

Our elections are a mess 63(!) partys have subscribed to take part in the elections, a lot of them have the same message (PVV,VNL,Forum).
I think we end up with either a coalition VVD/PVV or VVD/CDA/D66 but with this mess even a 4 or 5 party coalition might happen.

They should really change the rules, cuz every loser can start their own party these days (see that crazy lady from DENK)

Out of interest Maurice, has the recent Turkey/Netherlands spat made much of a difference on the ground in the Netherlands? Has it changed support for Captain von Legohair at all?

Well I think you mean Wilders? He is 2nd in the polls rn with current PM with his VVD first. Not much has changed but I think the PM got a bit more support as he was praised all weekend.

There are actually 4 parties who have a real shot at winning the election, so it could get really interesting!

We could be waiting a while before we have any idea what's happened then. And then another wait for a government to be formed.

There has been an exit poll and it suggests that Wilders' mob has fallen well short of winning. The current PM's party is predicted to get 31 seats (out of 150) with Wilders getting 19, the same as two other parties.

The centre-left Labour Party have apparently suffered the largest loss in Dutch election history if the opinion polls are to be believed, slumping from 38 seats in 2012 to just 9 in the exit polls, and many of the other left-leaning parties have suffered losses, so although Legohair's lot didn't make much gains overall, it does represent a rightward shift for the Netherlands.

And she finished three million votes in front.

No surprise the PM is doing well considering for the last week he has been standing up to Erdogan!
