there's some really strong tracks this time, not got through them all yet though. alot better than UP3.

Posted by: Dandy* Jan 1 2011, 12:47 PM

I listened to the youtube clips and thought the same. Just about to download them all now as I think it's going to take a fair few listens to be able to order them this time.

Posted by: Chris. Jan 4 2011, 10:27 AM

my current top 2 are so good, one i think is just incredible, the other i just can't get out of my head. infact my whole top 6 is rather strong. Much better quality than last time.

Swing Kids - Nonsense laugh.gif

'Bombay' is at least 30% better when watching the video.

but seriously, is that the best or worst music video ever, i can't tell.

Some incredible songs here.

Posted by: grebo69 Jan 4 2011, 04:17 PM

Struggling to find 10 good songs, let alone 12 ;-(

Posted by: Thomsen Jan 5 2011, 11:39 AM

Yep. Me too. :/

Posted by: tonyttt31 Jan 5 2011, 11:48 AM

I like most of them but love none of them.

Posted by: M!key Jan 5 2011, 07:51 PM

I'm really struggling to pick 12, 7 tracks are just passable and some tracks after a minute, I just couldn't listen to them in full, 3 tracks were just unbearable aka "Nonsense", been one of them. Mind you as I was listening to the tracks I came across a track that I might use for UP5. biggrin.gif it might split the voters though.

Posted by: grebo69 Jan 5 2011, 08:19 PM

The most annoying song is Krause. Who on earth thought that some brat squealing like a cross between Blackadder's Queenie and Violet Elizabeth over an electro backing was a good idea.

And I am so glad I am not going to have to hear that f***ing Immortal Technique song again either.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jan 5 2011, 08:23 PM

I don't see what's wrong with 'Nonsense'? Krause is definitely the worst, it's the only one I won't listen to a second time.

Posted by: ♂+♂=♥ Jan 5 2011, 08:26 PM

Nonsense samples the most annoying song in existence.

Posted by: Chris. Jan 5 2011, 08:27 PM

I agree about Krause, f***ing terrible, how anyone can enjoy something like that, or see it as music, is beyond me.

Krause was another unbearable track I certainly won't be listening to that again.

Nonsense is really a horrible song.

EDIT: After listening to Kraus, Nonsense is a brilliant song...

Posted by: Addy! Jan 6 2011, 04:25 PM

Krause is one of the most hilarious song I've heard...whoever send it has big b@lls.

Posted by: Tom Xmas Kayke Jan 6 2011, 04:59 PM

I LOVE Krause... well I loved the two songs that were sent to BJSC...

Posted by: HitStatic Jan 6 2011, 07:07 PM

Krause 'I Want A Pony' starts off with some promise with all the bleeps, synths and basic utter madness going on. Then the vocals kick in and to say "it goes downhill after that" is an understatement. sad.gif

As of this moment, there are two tracks battling for my #1 but struggling to find 10 songs overall I really like.

Posted by: Thomsen Jan 6 2011, 08:07 PM

I reckon Grouplove will do well in this.

Posted by: SKOB Jan 7 2011, 08:03 PM

Some great songs here. Oh the diversity! I'm gonna vote soon.

'Climbing Walls' reminds me of 'Barbra Streisand'.. The oo-oo-ooo part tongue.gif

'I Want a Pony' could be so much better without that horrible screaming.

Yeah, I actually thought it was a pretty well known track but perhaps I overestimated how many people would already know it if you weren't already familiar. Plus I almost entered it for UPI so I'll be gutted if it does well! biggrin.gif

Posted by: M!key Jan 8 2011, 05:32 PM

Fenech Soler track is familiar to me as well, it has been in my personal chart, and there is much better tracks from them, got pretty bored with Stop & Stare eventually.

I did think that statement would be a bit controversial laugh.gif Like a braindead, poptastic Crystal Castles - it's certainly got the Alice Glass (on tracks like Love and Caring/Alice Practice) influence there just a bit...

Posted by: ヽ(´ー`)ʎ Jan 8 2011, 08:51 PM

i don't think the simple fact that both singers scream occasionally makes them comparable. krause share no influences with crystal castles (8-bit music, purposeful lo-fi sounds , etc.) that krause song is literally terrible.

also, most of the songs this time are terrible. but there are a few good onez.

I've found that as well. I've currently got a provisional order which is unlikely to change much. Will give the songs another listen today and see if my opinion changes. I definitely know what my top 2 are though. It's just 3-12 I'm unsure about.

I'm having a proper listen now.

The one thing that always annoys/baffles me is how people don't organise their songs. Sure, no artwork is acceptable but NO ARTIST? WHAT IS THIS?! It makes me feel terribly dirty and then I have to make everything pretty before I can listen... only to normally delete half of the songs. Haha.

well some band's style their name in capitals, (for example HEALTH), i'm guessing AWOLNATION is the same.

worst thing is when you download an album and it's not tagged at all it's all just like 'track 1', what is wrong with people.

Definitely, although having looked around it seems AWOLNATION actually use capitals.

"Eva & The Heartmaker - Signals" - This all in the song name is not okay! Haha. I'm just being finicky.

I don't really understand the love for Fenech Soler. Pretty unremarkable to be honest, when I saw them I ended up drinking whiskey in the corner and looking at Twitter on my phone.

I haven't found anything I loved instantly yet (In The Fall) but there doesn't seem to be as many lows this time.

Not only do I have to have the tags correct but I cannot stand having mp3s at a 128 bitrate. I have to find them at a higher rate just to probably delete most of them a week later. I am such a bitrate snob.

I was actually going to write that originally but didn't want to seem like I was complaining about everything. Haha. I definitely agree though (and I don't tend to go back to the lower quality songs).

320 is great, but FLAC is like listening to music in HD.

I don't really understand the love for Fenech Soler. Pretty unremarkable to be honest, when I saw them I ended up drinking whiskey in the corner and looking at Twitter on my phone.

I haven't found anything I loved instantly yet (In The Fall) but there doesn't seem to be as many lows this time.

fenech soler are a pile of poop!

and i agree on the bitrate / tags thing. except that i never upload the mp3 myself LOL so as far as i know my tags could be terribly off. OH NO OH GOD.

but my itunes is so anally organized. everything has to be perfect. names / album artwork / bitrate / year / i even have a program that automatically that makes sure words like and / the / in aren't capitalized. IT'S PERFECTION. i also go on a torrent site that only uploads things with a minimum of 192 kbps which is nice.

also, FLAC is nice but i honestly can't tell the difference between that and V0 most of the time. and FLAC takes up way too much space and i don't feel like downloading the programz for it.

RULES

You must choose a song to send which meet the following criteria. It does not matter what type of song it is with regards to genre or length.

* The song must NOT have reached the UK Top 40 Singles Chart
* The artist(s) in question must never have had a UK top 20 single or album.
* The song must NOT be on the current UK release schedule

Was it my imagination or was it only if it was included on the new release schedule in the chart forum. Of course I might be mixing that up with BJSC.
I didn't know this was being released properly (in Feb here in the UK) coz I first heard it in August last year.

That was the release schedule at the time of posting the sign-up thread, and 'Colours' was not on it. At the time it was on 6 Music's C-List and XFM's 'evening playlist' which doesn't mean much considering how much they each playlist which isn't released, it's not much exposure anyway.

Shouldn't Immortal Technique be in the rap-forum?

Might just be me, but this time, there are so many songs which would never really be considered in a previous UP beacuse of the genre of the songs.

Dance, rap/hip-hop, Pop... I guess, I'm just disappointed about the quality this time, because this is the worst list of songs so far. At this very moment I can't fill out the scorecard with 12 entries. There are 2 or 3 great songs though. Love 'Cover Your Tracks'

sad.gif

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jan 11 2011, 02:42 PM

I've always said it doesn't matter about the genre as long as it meets the unknown requirements. It's mainly held in here so it's easy to keep a limit, if it were held in the pop forum too many people would enter with contrastic music tastes, and anywhere else it wouldn't get noticed.

To be honest, I'm following this forum to discover good rock music + sub genres. I love discovering new music and diversity is a great thing - my horizons have expanded because of the diversity of the songs in UP in paticular. I just feel it would be such a shame if the high standard of UP would decrease every time from now on and slowly turn into a junior-version of BJSC.

Posted by: SKOB Jan 11 2011, 05:47 PM

I think UP's will maintain their relatively high standards if people keep sending songs THEY like, not songs they think OTHERS like.

I Need a Dollar by Aloe Blacc was very out of place and was one of the best songs of that edition.

Posted by: Chris. Jan 11 2011, 05:52 PM

in the end I see Hip-Hop as an alternative genre (as an alternative to mainstream/pop that is), and also that Immortal Technique track is incredible, people shouldnt limit their taste by genre and i'd hate to see this competition limited to indie.

As someone who also takes part in BJSC I can safely say that this content is still very far away from being anything like the general BJSC. biggrin.gif

And I do think that this contest is overall worse than UP3 but I thought UP3 was better than UP1 and 2 when I listened to those songs for tony's vote. I guess it's just natural that there's a weaker contest from time to time but I don't see any downwards trend.

Posted by: Chris. Jan 11 2011, 05:56 PM

I think this comp is significantly better than UP3 personally, after UP3 i was worried it was going to go downhill.

and as long as the general people who enter each time continue entering, and this stays in this forum, it won't transcend into being like BJSC, theres two competitions for a reason.

Posted by: Severin Jan 11 2011, 06:22 PM

As a slightly old school 'alternative' fan I say the more diversity the better. The old Indie charts were full of a huge variety of artists all with something equally worthwhile to offer. I do think this particular edition of UP is slightly too similar sounding throughout as many of the tracks seemed to blur into one for me, much more so than previous one but I don't expect that trend to continue every time. As well as that I've decided that since my tastes aren't typical of Buzzjack and even of this particular sub-forum that I am not interested in winning this but just offering up something that maybe one of two people might discover and love. Surely that is the real point of this competition?

indeed, i couldnt give an arse about where I, or anyone, comes tbh, i just want to discover good music.

if anything there does seem to be a certain UP sound leading to many similar sounding tracks, so the fact someone would branch out and enter a hip hop track is great.

Posted by: Dandy* Jan 11 2011, 06:42 PM

I'm all for the diversity to remain too, it makes for a more interesting experience when people enter different genres.

I usually struggle to select a song as I try to find something that I don't think anyone else will have heard before which, when you consider the reasonably vast amount of alternative acts regularly discussed here, makes it quite difficult to find something completely new. I probably overthink it tbh!

Posted by: Thomsen Jan 11 2011, 06:49 PM

I guess, you're right. And UP4 do have have great tracks. smile.gif

Posted by: M!key Jan 11 2011, 06:58 PM

I found something better now which I wish I entered it, I just have to keep it for UP5.

Posted by: Dandy* Jan 11 2011, 07:18 PM

I've voted, my top track really was streets ahead in the end and definitely one of my favourite discoveries so far - even if I did already know of the act.

Posted by: grebo69 Jan 11 2011, 08:34 PM

I'm all for diversity within the contest and my distaste for Immortal Technique has nothing to do with it being a hip-hop track. I do like the backing and think it has great production, It's the subject of the rap that I really don't want to listen to again.

luvvv hip-hop, but that imortal technique song stinks. my opinion tho. i dunno. i guess that certain aesthetic in rap (immortal technique, aesop rock) sort of turns me off. tho i do like some aesop rock songs occasionally. it also just feels like a poor man's 'da art of storytellin' (part 1)'.

i think diversity is good. like someone else said, if UP stays in this forum and the people who enter it keep doing it i think quality/diversity will always remain high. it may fluctuate between contests, but we'll never be like BJSC. and thank god for that.

Well the original song in question is crap, and she's only a 'featured as' artist on it (in fact, I wouldn't be suprised in her original track was sampled and contractual issues meant that she had to be credited).

'Prince Igor' with Warren G. As Brett says, she may well have been sampled but I do remember her being credited.

As I say, not really an issue as such, I just found it weird that she was probably the least likely to have been successful in the singles chart and yet arguably is the most.

Personally,

Grouplove/Glasser for the winner.

I guess my song is also one that some people might call dull. They couldn't be more wrong, though. happy.gif

I'll get this in as soon as I can for tomorrow..

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jan 12 2011, 09:21 PM

Right, that's you and Harve has just PM'd me as well. If you can get them to me for early ish tomorrow (as in before mid-day) I MIGHT accept them if I've got the time, I've done quite a bit today (more than I thought) but the scoreboards and commentry take ages.

The song I submitted this time was one I thought would do well based on previous contests, but I think I misjudged it slightly. Oh well, hopefully one or two people enjoy it enough to keep it on their iPods after the contest.

This contest hasn't had many stand out tracks on it, just quite a lot of decent tunes, with a few stinkers thrown in for good measure.

There were some songs where the singer had a decent enough voice but I found the song a little dull. One of the songs I gave some points would have scored more if it was about a minute or so shorter.

What time are results tonight?

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat Jan 13 2011, 05:22 PM

About 8:00, in about 2 1/2 hours. Shouldn't take more than two hours tonight, only 25 voters and everything is already ready.

Ugh, there's a track I've already changed my mind on which I should've given points to. Here's hoping it does well anyway!

I'm beginning to think mine is going to do badly now which is all sad.gif as I had reasonably high hopes when the competition began.

I'm nervous now. Mine could be seen as dull but I think it's beautiful.
