This trio from St. Albans were the first, and still ONLY group to debut with 3 number 1 hits: “Jump In The Pool”, “Paris” and “Skeleton Boy” - in the space of just 7 months between September 2008 and March 2009. The ethos behind a lot of their music is encapsulated brilliantly by “Live Those Days Tonight” (their lowest peaking single, which I regret only charting at #9), and shared by a number of artists in the 2010s which was the nostalgia for and celebration of a scene that they never really got to experience - the rave culture of the late 1980s/early 1990s. I did think that they had decided to call it a day after their second album Pala but in 2018 they started to release singles again, and amazingly they came back just as good in 2019 with Inflorescent - it took eight years, but it was definitely worth the wait.

The first hit from Justin Vernon's band Bon Iver was the wonderful “Skinny Love” in 2008 (before it was RUINED by Birdy), but his double #1s in 2011 cemented his success here - and it was the wonderful “Holocene” that blitzed to 5 weeks at number 1 and became one of the biggest hits of the decade, kind of overshadowing the equally brilliant “Calgary”, which as with so much of their music becomes more rewarding with each listen. The group went down a more experimental route for 2016s 22, a Million which initially I was unsold on, but like with all of their music to-date it just continued to grow and grow on me with time. I've got to say that I haven't been that bowled over by i,i but I expect it will grow on me in the future, and I did love “Hey, Ma” last year. : )

This group from Leeds in West Yorkshire came from absolutely nowhere to dominate my chart in 2012 with 5 hits - “Fitzpleasure” was first, entered into Unknown Pleasures and quickly became a strong favourite.. but their biggest hit came in the summer when “Tessellate” spent a cool month at the top of the chart (and could have made 6 if it wasn't for the London Olympic Games and Underworld's Opening Ceremony track “Caliban's Dream” storming ahead of it to No1 for a fortnight. There was a lot of hype around the band when An Awesome Wave came out, probably too much but I did love the album to bits, with their Wild Beasts-esque pop tracks and quirky vocals and beats. They did come back with two follow-ups but neither set my heart or chart alight in quite the same way, though that said “3WW” remains a tune!

Scotland's CHVRCHES also broke through in 2012 with the brilliant “The Mother We Share” which despite its unfortunate low peak of #9 holds the record for most chart weeks on for its peak- of the decade, and indeed of all-time. I wasn't that fussed with the follow-up single “Recover” (which is why it just missed the Top 10) but “Gun” stormed to #1 the week before I went to Latitude in Suffolk in July 2013.. and by chance I managed to catch them in the forest on the Friday afternoon with barely a few hundred people in the audience for what was a really fun and memorable performance. “Gun” cemented itself at #1 for the rest of that month and I immediately bought The Bones of What You Believe when it came out in the Autumn and they've continued to have Top 10 hits ever since. I am not SURE what the deal is with the chart peak of “Clearest Blue”...

I was so unbelievably happy when Vampire Weekend returned last year, and even more so when I heard the beautiful “Harmony Hall” - they first broke through in 2008 when the short but incredibly fun “A-Punk” went to #1 for just 1 week before being knocked off by MGMT's “Time To Pretend” which I remember being synonymous with the final scene of the first series of Channel 4 teen series Skins. 2008 seemed like such an exciting time for new music and Vampire Weekend have managed to defy the odds against them and their contemporaries from the time by continuing to deliver through the 2010s with a further 3 #1 hits and a 100% Top 10 success rate. I think Harmony “Harmony Hall” is my favourite of the decade, proving that bands can return with even stronger material than ever before.

Decent set of artists so far - I'm a fan of most of them although Arcade Fire, Hot Chip & Vampire Weekend are my favourites.

I know a few alt-j songs but not too many so giving 3WW a listen now, it's certainly interesting wink.gif I can see the musical talent behind it but don't think it's my cup of tea sadly.

The iamamiwhoami project was teased mysteriously at the start the decade with a series of short videos released by Swedish musician Jonna Lee - this led to speculation about who was behind the project, as a lot of the tracks previewed sounded a lot like the electro and synth-pop of fellow Scandinavians Fever Ray/The Knife, and Björk.. and somewhat bizarrely Christina Aguilera was also namechecked (hah) until in the summer of 2011 Jonna gave her first interview on the project. Only a few of the tracks released really impacted on me until in 2012 when “Play” stormed to #2 - blocked by Alabama Shakes' “Hold On” and was followed in the autumn by the brilliant disco infused and synth driven slice of pop perfection “Goods” which was by far the stunning highlight from Kin and went on to spent 4 weeks at #1.

It's fair to say Kanye West lost his way somewhat last decade, what with the constant tirades on Twitter, his growing Messiah complex and recent political interactions.. however these have yet to overshadow or completely destroy my love of his artistic output. It started very strongly with the honest and open My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy which spawned his biggest hit of the decade on my chart - the beautiful “Runaway”. He very almost scored his first #1 a few years later when “Black Skinhead” debuted at #20 and shot to #2 but it was not to be, and I have been less excited by his most recent output, however that said he continues to have Top 10s and is no doubt likely to finally score a #1 in the near future, I hope!

In Colour is one of my favourite albums of the 2010s - its colourful and vibrant cover represent the rich and exciting themes that run through its addictive playlist - and it was the culmination of his side-project to the XX that brought me onside from as early as 2011 when he remixed Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 album I'm New Here. We're New Here's centrepiece, “I'll Take Care Of U” was taken in to the Top 40 by Drake and Rihanna later in the year (though it pales in comparison to the original) but it was a Top 5 hit on my chart, and was followed by his debut solo track “Far Nearer” (#17 in July 2011) which heavily features steel drums that would later become his signature on In Colour. The sampling of Idris Muhammad's “Could Heaven Ever Be Like This” on Romy featuring (de-facto xx single) team up “Loud Places” remains his biggest hit of the decade.

Gloucestershire born Tahliah Barnett arrived in style with her debut, vibrant single “Two Weeks”, which soared to #1 and was later followed by “Video Girl” in November 2014 after I finally decided to buy her debut LP LP1. However, it took almost 5 years to deliver another masterpiece. In the meantime we did get the M3LL155X and the wonderful “In Time” which is her biggest hit here this decade, of which there were 4 number 1 singles. Of course she came back this year with the brilliant Magdalene featuring more of the stark minimalism offset by starlit strings and strong production that we heard on her debut - she remains one of my favourite vocalists of the decade and I'm certain that she will continue to chart well into the 2020s!

There are 8 female solo artists in the Top 20, but none had quite the introduction as the 6th highest which places at #16. Elizabeth Grant aka Lana Del Rey, arrived in style in the summer of 2011 with the timeless “Video Games” a heart-wrenching ode to a failing relationship where she surrenders to 'opening up a beer while he plays video games'. It posted the joint-slowest climb to #1 (11 weeks) with Róisín Murphy's “The Rumble”, and was the start of a prolific era of chart success, soon scoring another #1 with the title-track from her debut “Born To Die” in January 2012. Lana Del Rey has remained consistently good throughout the decade with some twists and turns in her output quality, though she has yet to match the back-to-back number 1 success she scored on debut.

It's when you see the songs listed like that you really do realise just how good the work Jamie xx has put out is. That Gil Scott-Heron album is a masterpiece, and I love 'I'll Take Care Of You'

Since I last commented there's only Lana that's not been a big hitter for me this decade. I love 'Video Games' but have never really been able to get her at all.

I've got the current FKA Twigs album as one to give a proper go to this year. I did like 'Cellophane' although never quite enough to chart it, and 'Home to You' and 'Holy Terrain' both just ok, but loving 'Sad Day' at the moment so going to try it. He first album is excellent.

Definitely give it a go, I am pretty certain that you won't be disappointed, thanks to Nicolas Jaar the production on it is stunning!

The only track I didn't think much of was “Holy Terrain” which I found really boring but the rest is all fantastic.

I was pretty late to this American group, and it was only after their 5th studio album High Violet in 2010 that I was converted into a huge fan of The National. Most of their songs are incredibly distinctive, with the rich melodies and melancholy contrasting in each track with the baritone vocals of lead singer Matt Berninger, and this was best represented in this decade with the lead single “Bloodbuzz Ohio” - which perfectly sums up the post-financial crash decade of the 2010s in its lyric 'I still owe money to the money to the money that I owe'. They are another group who have consistently put out good or great albums and I really enjoyed 2019s I Am Easy To Find which was one of their most ambitious projects to date with a robust female vocal feature list to play off Matt's lead. The highlight of which “Rylan” gave them a 9th Top 10 single (“Mistaken For Strangers” - not listed here - hit #6 in summer 2007).

Charlotte Aitchison became one of the youngest artists to get to #1 in the 2010s when “Nuclear Seasons” hit #1 for Christmas in 2011, and it was the start of a quite prolific chart career in which she navigated a narrow pathway that wandered between experimental pop/synthpop and more commercial pop music. For me the results have been quite mixed, I never truly warmed to “You (Ha Ha Ha)”, her 2013 remix of the 2010 Gold Panda single “You” - however when she is good she hits it out the park mixing irresistible hooks and catchy electropop, and that is demonstrated more than ever by her recent collaboration with producer A. G. Cook which produced the 2019 #1 hit “Gone” with other Top 40 artist Christine and the Queens.

Sounding quite like nothing else at the time, British singer/producer James Blake exploded on to the chart in late 2010 with his stripped back cover of Feist's “Limit To Your Love” (still to-date his only appearance in the UK Top 40 at #39) which masks its beautifully crafted bass throb under Blake's tender vocals. The follow-up quickly became a huge favourite: “The Wilhelm Scream” - which references the stock scream sound effect used gratuitously by film producers as a nod-wink in joke but actually the song is a reworking of Blake's fathers song “Where To Turn” perhaps referencing his father's influence/voice echoing through time. Throughout the 2010s he released a further 3 albums, all of which I enjoyed though I would say his most recent, 2019s Assume Form is his most consistent and its centrepiece, the beautiful “Can't Believe The Way We Flow” is my firm favourite of his now despite stalling at #2.
