Chart Analysis

Chart Commentary

Christmas chaos has begun and I've put in a new chart rule to stop the effect taking up the entirety of the chart, last year there were over 80 Christmas songs in the top 100, so this year Christmas songs are only allowed in the top 50, and already the majority of that section is taken over. It would be an equally meaningless chart with no Christmas songs either as it's at least half of what I'm listening to at the moment. Anyway, there is no change at #1 as Kygo just about manages to hold on with 'Happy Now' for a third week, ahead of Leona Lewis who re-enters at #2 with 'One More Sleep'. It is now the fifth week she has has slept at that peak but she should be able to finally go to #1 this year.

Every year we get one or two new additions to the Christmas playlist and this year is no exception with two new festive entries in the top 10. John Gibbons took on the Chris De Burgh classic 'A Spaceman Came Travelling', with help from Franklin on production and Nina Nesbitt on vocals. It instantly becomes his fifth top 10 hit (and 7th top 40 hit), entering at #3, matching his highest peak achieved by 'Would I Lie To You'. The other two acts were both yet to have a top 40 hit.

At #7 are Kiesza and Chris Malinchak, who appear together in the chart for the third time following 'Mother' (#17) and 'Weird Kid' (#39) which both charted this year. Their song is an original titled 'I Only Love You At Christmas' and it gives Kiesza her 4th top 10 hit and Chris his 3rd.

Another new entry in the top 10, however not a Christmas one, comes from Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus titled 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart'. It enters at #5 giving Mark his second top 10 hit of the year following 'Electricity' (#4) and third overall also counting 'Uptown Funk' (#2). It is Miley's 2nd top 10 hit following her will.i.am feature 'Fall Down' which briefly made #6.

Seasonal faves from Wham! and The Pogues re-enter the top 10 at #6 and #8. For The Pogues it is their 6th consecutive year of making the top 10, and they also continue their feat of making the chart every year since 2010. Gaining new peaks already are Armin van Buuren's 'Christmas Days', back in at #43, and Ariana Grande's 'Santa Tell Me' at #46.

Also making the chart are a few BJSC entries. The highest of these is eventual winner 'Remember' by Gryffin & ZOHARA which enters at #41, a few others chart outside the top 50 alongside new entries from Meek Mill feat. Drake and Dalton Harris feat. James Arthur (the year's X Factor winning single, which I am not counting as a Christmas song despite the original version being considered one, so it is allowed to chart at #79)
