146. JLS- Love You More 1.423076923 (30 of 34 for ’10)
145. Roll Deep- Green Light 1.846153846 (29 of 34 for ’10)
144. Military Wives- Wherever You Are 1.857142857 (27 of 30 for ’11)
143. Chris Brown- Turn Up The Music 1.903846154 (33 of 36 for ’12)
142. Sak Noel- Loca People 2.071428571 (26 of 30 for ’11)
141. Jason Derulo- Don't Wanna Go Home 2.107142857 (25 of 30 for ’11)

Let's start of with 6 songs with absolutely horrifying average. JLS survived being the wildcard by the skin of their teeth with their song Love You More- a song I would give an opinion on if I remember how it went. It seems like most of you don't remember it either with its average of 1.4. Roll Deep have had 2 number 1's though I doubt anyone actually remembers them. Anyway Green Light is quite a good song and finishes 29 out of 34 for 2010. Chris sick2.gif Brown is at 143 with the absolutely terrible Turn Up The Music [or should have been titled Turn Down The Music] and is the only song from 2012 in this section. 3 songs from 2011 also entered in the first section. Wherever You Are just escaped becoming another charity song in the final, Loca People is arguably one of the most non number 1's ever and I don't think Don't Wanna Go Home is that remembered but nowhere near as badly not remembered as this ranking shows. Anyway it's hard to believe that Jason's songs such as Whatcha Say, Ridin Solo and more were not number 1 when they are his most known.
The next section will be presented by Thermo wub.gif

poor Sak Noel sad.gif That really should've been a huge summer smash, not a complete non-#1!

Turn Up the Music and Don't Wanna Go Home though :/ glad they're so low. Love You More is quite crap too

136. Ne-Yo- Let Me Love You 2.519230769 (31 of 36 for ’12)
137. Wiley Ft Ms D- Heatwave 2.461538462 (32 of 36 for ’12)
138. Alexandra Burke- Start Without You 2.442307692 (26 of 34 for ’10)
139. Scouting For Girls- This Ain't A Love Song 2.346153846 (27 of 34 for ’10)
140. Diana Vickers- Once 2.192307692 (28 of 34 for ’10)

Diana Vickers starts the section with a song that almost didn't go to #1 (I'm not going to dig out sales figures but I remember OMG overtaking it on iTunes during the week). She only ever went to #1 "Once", intact she never hit the top 10 after this song so it's no surprise that it's been forgotten by just about everyone except a few members of Buzzjack who loon over her. The next act I can be 99% sure has no Buzzjack loons though, Scouting For Girls somehow got a #1 single years after they first started hitting the UK charts, constant R1/R2 airplay surely helped but they gradually fell out of favour with the public after this thankfully.

The next one was iconically snubbed by R1. Yes I'm talking about Alexandra Burke who is probably not feeling very ok.com with this single choice as despite it going to #1 it wasn't a huge seller and it started her career's decline. It's a terrible song anyway so I'm glad it's this low.

Out of 2010 now and we get to two 2012 songs now. Urban stars going all dance on us wasn't uncommon then and we have 2 examples of this here. Firstly with 'Heatwave' (my fave song of the section) which made Wiley relevant again (it shouldn't be this low guys! although it is quite forgotten now) and then Ne-Yo, which like Beautiful Monster, the song felt like an easy #1 and did get there, but years later it feels like a complete non-#1.

Up next with your #131-135 is Chez Wombat bounce.gif

131. JLS- The Club Is Alive 2.846153846 (25/34 for 2010)

JLS somehow managed six UK number 1s, mainly through well timed releases and fanbase buys. Indeed you'd probably struggle to recall more than 1 or 2 of them these days. The
Club Is Alive is hardly remembered, but it perhaps stands above a few of their other completely forgettable number 1s for the novelty value of sampling The Sound of Music's title track, ofc. why anyone would buy it in the first place is a more puzzling question.

132. Dappy- No Regrets 2.803571429 (23/30 for 2011)

The not at all worthy and pretentious sounding debut solo single from the wonderful, sweet hearted Dappy managed to go to number 1 back in the low sales climate of Autumn 2011, it was a bit of a non number 1 and though the man himself is still in all our hearts, the song has faded over time. Any song that uses Chris Brown as a metaphor for a changed man is better best forgotten.

133. Tinchy Stryder Ft Amelle- Never Leave You 2.72 (29/33 for 2009)

For a moment in 2009, Tinchy Stryder struck a chord with the public and managed two UK number 1s, it didn't last and these days, he just simply blends in with the many other British pop/grime artists and continues releasing rehashed, unremarkable stuff. Never Leave You was actually a nice song which benefitted from a catchy chorus from Sugababe Amelle, but sounds distinctly of it's time.

134. Nero- Promises 2.678571429 (24/30 for 2011)

Again taking advantage of a held back release, low sales period and building hype from previous releases, Promises went to number 1 with what turned out to be the lowest weekly sales for a number 1 of the year, a plummet down the charts, one minor hit later and Nero have thus far, faded from public memory, did anyone know they had a comeback this year? 'Tis quite saddening as this is a song I still really like and listen to now but it appears I'm in the minority sad.gif

135. Chipmunk- Oopsy Daisy 2.66 (30/33 for 2009)

Speaking of bargain basement pop-grime acts, Chipmunk is next with his only (forgotten) number 1, Oopsy Daisy. Although his name can still be seen around in the charts occasionally and he would go on to have a bigger hit that didn't quite make number 1, he has never released anything with lasting potential and this extremely of-it's-time song is no exception except for the chart geek fun fact that the lyric 'And now I feel like Saturdays are weaker' proved to be quiter literal as he beat them to number 1 that week

No Regrets is such a guilty pleasure, as is most of Dappy's solo stuff ! laugh.gif

130. Little Mix- Cannonball 2.928571429 (22 of 30 for ’11)
129. Roll Deep- Good Times 3.038461538 (24 of 34 for ’10)
128. David Guetta, Chris Willis, LMFAO and Fergie- Gettin Over You 3.134615385 (23 of 34 for ’10)
127. Ne-Yo- Beautiful Monster 3.134615385 (22 of 34 for ’10)
126. Tulisa- Young 3.538461538 (30 of 36 for ’12)

5 more songs down, were nearly already half way through the 2010 songs showing how memorable that year was for #1's. Also we make progress with the averages as we head above 3.0

Starting off this section is Little Mix- the first band to ever win the X-Factor- with their winner's song Cannonball. Little Mix started off at really low odds but after an amazing performance of Don't Let Go- they became the favourites. Anyway Cannonball is a great and beautiful cover and shows off LM's vocal talents. It is their first of 2 songs that have reached number 1 and I think it is more well remembered than the average suggests.

Good Times by Roll Deep which I think included Wiley was their first of 2 number 1's in 2010 and their last on this countdown as Green Light is already out. I doubt anyone remember Roll Deep that well but Good Times is an absolutely great song because of Jodie Connor's fantastic vocals. Also Good Times spent 3 weeks at #1 I believe- that would be a good trivia question as no one seems to really remember it here.

Gettin Over You was one of the last great Guetta songs and again this was down to one artist mostly- Fergie who is fantastic on this track, it's a shame the same can't be said about L.A. Love. Chris Willis vocals are also good but LMFAO's part is a racket. I also think Gettin Over You is a bit more well remembered than the average suggests and the song climbed from 41 to 1.

The last two songs in this section are two mediocre efforts at best. Ne-Yo seems to have random generic #1's every 2 years and Beautiful Monster is on the better side of his stuff but still bad. It is the 3rd 2010 song in a row and the 12th one out. Tulisa who seems to have a quite big fanbase on here falls at 126 with her only ever solo #1- Young. It is an ok but generic song and Tulisa's solo song shifted 121k on its opening week and was 43 on the 2012 Year To Date chart.

Still no 2013 songs yet. When and who will you think will be the first 2013 song to appear?

Thermo next for you in the UltraThermWombat presentation cheer.gif

121. Sam And The Womp- Bom Bom 3.769230769 (29 of 36 for ’12)
122. Jason Derulo- In My Head 3.711538462 (20 of 34 for ’10)
123. Matt Cardle- When We Collide 3.653846154 (21 of 34 for ’10)
124. Pixie Lott- Boys And Girls 3.6 (28 of 33 for ’09)
125. JLS Ft Dev- She Makes Me Wanna 3.553571429 (21 of 30 for ’11)

Not even into the top 120 and we get a third dropout for JLS. Which means they only have their 2009 #1s left in the competition. Anyway 'She Makes Me Wanna' was the last #1 single they ever got as a leading act. Of course as much as I like to forget it happened, they did get another #1 after this by being pointlessly tacked on to the X Factor charity single for that year, hence the 'as a leading act' part of the sentence. Anyway the song annoyingly jumped on the 'name some random places' trend (their pronunciation of Africa, just no)

It also added Dev to the list of female rappers to get a #1 hit only by featuring on other people's records, originally a chart feat only shared with Lil' Kim but this year Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj have joined them.

Pixie Lott is up next with a song that's just there really, it's very basic and doesn't put anything new on the table but it's still an okay pop song. It's certainly the least memorable of her 3 #1s anyway. Matt Cardle easily won The X Factor back in 2010 and predictably went to Christmas #1. But he became as forgotten as quickly as he rose to 'success', and eventually got dropped from Syco and snubbed on the X Factor's promotional advert for 10 years of producing popstars.

Another Jason Derulo song is kicked out, it is the only UK #1 from his debut album but it's not Ridin' Solo or even Watcha Say. In My Head got a lot of hate for it being very generic and sounding similar to Just Dance. It is quite good but it doesn't really deserve to be a remembered #1 especially when Jason has Wiggle, Talk Dirty and Ridin' Solo in his collection.

Finally it's a novelty dance track from Sam And The Womp. To the surprise of no-one this was their only chart hit but what a good one it was. It's nice to have a fun song and it should be noted for using a saxophone in its drop before Thrift Shop/Talk Dirty/Problem/Crazy Stupid Love. Such trendsetters~ but sadly not very remembered for it.

Running down your 120 - 116 iiiiiiiiiiiiit's Chez Wombat cheer.gif

116. One Direction- One Way Or Another 3.28 (26/29 for 2013)

So we see the first 2013 song that made it through appear - Charity songs are never particularly well remembered as songs as they are more concerned with raising money than aiming for musical quality, and this was no exception. This was the 2013 Comic Relief single - a rather ill-advised cover of the Blondie classic fused with a few lines from another classic The Undertones' - and essentially defecating all over them from above. It sold fairly respectably and did it's job as a charity single, but as a piece of music, it's best forgotten.

117. Ke$ha- We R Who We R 3.857142857 (19/30 for 2011)

With a little help from her good mate Dr Luke, Ke$ha managed her first number 1 in early 2011 with this...well, standard Ke$ha song really. Indeed, a common criticism directed at this was that it was too typical of her style and there was very little to distinguish it from the far better selling and well remembered Tik Tok, and though it again sold respectably, it never quite managed to justify her highest charting song being anything other than a well timed release rather than being her genuinely most popular/highly regarded song.

118. Iyaz- Replay 3.826923077 (19/34 for 2010)

Already fifteen songs down for 2010, the infamous year of the non number 1 indeed. This one was actually far from a non number 1, being one of the top 20 best selling records of the year, unfortunately four years later, it doesn't feel that it was at all. I always hated this and it's a really irritating and cliched song as it was, but it somehow struck a chord with the public, albeit for all of five minutes. Iyaz himself proved to have absolutely nothing of worth to add as an artist beyond this and I think the standard person would struggle to name another song of his.

119. Joe McElderry- The Climb 3.82 (27/33 for 2009)

Joe McElderry, the winner of X Factor 2009, was a talent that unfortunately had to learn the hard way that Theatre/Opera was more his thing than a commercial pop star, his winners single - a cover of Miley Cyrus' (when she was still known to most as that sweet girl from Hannah Montana) The Climb, was just as standard and cliched a cover as most before it, however, poor Joe unfortunately won somewhat at the wrong time as this was just the time everyone was getting a bit sick of X Factor getting Christmas number 1 all the time - and championed something, well a little different, which will come later and against the odds, succeeded, and though The Climb made up for it the week after, it left Joe having the ubiquitous title as an X Factor winner that didn't debut at number 1 nor get there at Christmas, a record only shared with Steve Brookstein. Though as a song it may not be remembered, THAT week will forever stay in memory and the song somewhat represents a symbol for the beginning of the end of X Factor's stranglehold on everything.

120. Cher Lloyd- Swagger Jagger 3.785714286 (20/30 for 2011)

Speaking of X Factor, Cher Lloyd, 2010's 4th place finisher, pops up here. Cher was always somewhat a marmite character and her debut did nothing to change that image, enchanting and repulsing others almost equally. It is something of a novelty that sold it, it faded very quickly and today, can just about rely on it's polarising and novelty status of the song to keep it just about in public memory, even beyond the artist herself (well, over here, now she's abandoned us for the US)

-x-

I promise this will get a bit more positive when I get to songs I actually like ph34r.gif

Sorry for the delay, this was meant to be up yesterday but my computer kept crashing when I tried to load the images

115. Ant And Dec- Let's Get Ready To Rhumble 3.52 (25 of 29 for ’13)
114. Calvin Harris Ft Alesso & Hurts- Under Control 3.86 (24 of 29 for ’13)
113. Will.I.Am Ft Eva Simons- This Is Love 3.923076923 (28 of 36 for ’12)
112. Katy Perry- Part Of Me 3.942307692 (27 of 36 for ’12)
111. DJ Fresh Ft Sian Evans- Louder 3.982142857 (18 of 30 for ’11)

WOW. There is no 2010 songs in this section ohmy.gif

Anyway Let's Get Ready To Rhumble got to #1 last year after some TV appearance or something despite that the sold is many years old. Saturday Night Takeaway has now turned terrible and I don't like this song but yay that it was the song that I think beat the witch is dead song. Under Control was a generic Calvin Harris #1 which is why no one remembers it. This Is Love was good at the time but I struggle to remember its existence anymore. Part Of Me is amazing and definitely underrated- it is a great and amazing Katy Perry song. Louder is another good dance song but sounds very dated now- anyway Sian Evans vocals still remain amazing.

Sorry for not much of a write-up, just really busy at the moment and the amount of times I had wrote something and then lost it because my computer crashed got on my nerves

liked Louder very much at the time, seems a little surprising it did so well in retrospect, and hasn't exactly aged the best, but nonetheless a few good summer 2k11 memories with that track

Part of Me puke.gif one of the dullest pop hits in recent years, Under Control is also quite BLAH, tho it does have the slight redeeming factor of Theo Hutchcraft's presence on it

so glad Part of Me is relatively forgotten these days. Katy Perry on autopilot.

106. Rita Ora- How We Do (Party) 4.365384615 (26 of 36 for ’12)
107. Cheryl Cole- Promise This 4.269230769 (18 of 34 for ’10)
108. Nicole Scherzinger- Don't Hold Your Breath 4.267857143 (16 of 30 for ’11)
109. Dizzee Rascal- Holiday 4.12 (26 of 33 for ’09)
110. Pixie Lott- All About Tonight 4.071428571 (17 of 30 for ’11)

The second of three Pixie Lott #1s drop out, meaning we only have Mama Do left. Whether that made top 100 or not is yet to be seen but right now it's "All About Tonight". The song is very generic which does let it down a lot, but as it was the comeback to a successful first era, of course it was gonna smash. Since then she's found herself in the irrelevant popstars clique, with her latest single having missed the top 100.

Following up smash hit 'Bonkers' is 'Holiday' which finds itself at #109, far below its predecessor in this rundown. It's nothing new for a Dizzee song but I do like its summery vibes. It's certainly much better than his most recent material anyway.

Next up is Nicole Scherzinger who took advantage of a quiet week to get to #1, knocking Adele's mega-hit Someone Like You off the top spot after it had already spent 4 weeks there and its sales were declining. It is quite good but certainly not a classic #1. It's definitely not as good as Right Here/Wet for me anyway.

Cheryl Cole's lead to her second era was initially a big success, selling over 150,000 copies in one week. It dived quickly though and overall sales weren't much higher than 400k leading to it being overshadowed by the million-selling Fight For This Love. It enters at #107.

How We Do (Party) predictably became Rita Ora's third #1 single after being held back for a very long time. It didn't become quite the huge hit some were expecting though, and was quickly forgotten, probably because it was very uninspired (didn't stop me from loving it oops)

Chez Wombat with #101-105 up next cool.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat Oct 19 2014, 01:43 PM

101. James Arthur- Impossible 4.807692308 (24/36 for 2012)

Just missing the top 100 then is the coronation single for 2012 X Factor champ, James Arthur. Like quite a few other male winners, he ruined his career by being a complete twat and not keeping his mouth shut, and he is unfortunately now destined to go down with numerous other XF flops. Still, you couldn't say he didn't have potential - Impossible reversed the decline of sales in the X Factor winners singles from the previous year and sold very well. It'll probably be remembered more than the Shontelle original ('Who?' I hear you ask), but not much else will be going for it at this moment.

102. Tinchy Stryder Ft N-Dubz- Number 1 4.8 (24/33 for 2009)

And here Tinchy is again with his first big breakthrough that got him his fifteen minutes of fame and did exactly what the title of the track said and went to number 1 - helped from a contribution from rising stars (at the time) N-Dubz, well it was marketed that way but it was all Dappy really, seeing as Tulisa & Fazer really can't be heard at all on here. Sounding pleasant at the time, it was aging badly by the end of the year and is totally forgotten now. Tinchy tried his best to get back up to the heights he set himself in 2009 (even hording Dappy back in for an attempt at a recreation of this two years later), but it just never really happened.

103. Pixie Lott- Mama Do 4.74 (25/33 for 2009)

And Pixie makes her final appearance just outside the top 100 with the third of her pleasant-but-forgettable trio of number 1s. This one came when she was a fresh on the scene and didn't do too badly, but the fact was quite clear right from the start that she was a pretty face that didn't ultimately have a lot of substance as an artist and since then, has slowly declined with each passing era and a dropping announcement seems inevitable, but at least Mama Do was before things got embarassingly bad for her I suppose we can say...

104. Gabrielle Aplin- The Power Of Love 4.692307692 (25/36 for 2012)

Another one from 2012, this one getting there from the power of the selling machine that is the John Lewis Christmas advert. The formula of which has become rather obvious over the years - little known to rather well known female singer/songwriter sings a stripped back cover of a classic hit over a Christmas themed advert that makes the nation collectively go 'awww' and thus sending the song/John Lewis items flying off the shelves over the festive period. This was the first of the songs that managed to get to number 1 in the UK and establish them as a force at Christmas after Ellie Goulding just missed out two years prior and Slow Moving Millie didn't really set the charts alight the year before. It's unlikely it'll be remembered when it's seasonal as it is and it's a cover of a well known 'Christmas' classic itself, but it'll surely get a few spins when Christmas comes around again.

105. Olly Murs- Please Don't Let Me Go 4.519230769 (17/34 for 2010)

Perhaps what can be seen as the final of the largely forgotten 2010 chart toppers is the debut single from 2009 XF runner up, Olly Murs. Unlike the boy that pipped him to the post, Olly proved to be quite suited to being a popstar and his brand of radio-friendly, catchy pop songs have done him good over the years. This was his first number 1, and indeed it's all of which I've just described, but he has gone on, against expectation, to do much better over the years and produce far better output, so this one has been a bit left behind.

-x-

Stick around for the number 1s we actually remember as the top 100 starts with Ultraviolence next!

100. The Wanted- All Time Low 4.826923077 (16 of 34 for ’10)
99. The Black Eyed Peas- The Time 4.865384615 (15 of 34 for ’10)
97. Cascada- Evacuate The Dancefloor 4.88 (23 of 33 for ’09)
97. Avicii Vs Nicky Romero- I Could Be The One 4.88 (23 of 29 for ’13)
96. Taio Cruz- Break Your Heart 4.96 (22 of 33 for ’09)

And we enter the top 100 at last as I have finally worked out how to upload images onto my computer without it crashing cheer.gif [it has crashed about 10 times while I have tried to upload images for this]

Starting us off in 100 is the boyband who were quite big but never at the top of the boybands- The Wanted. Their first single just makes it into the top 100 which was a rare cause of a song being snubbed originally by both Capital and Radio 1 [I believe] ohmy.gif It is quite a good debut but it is a bit of a hard song to remember so I am surprised it did this well. But anything to put the 2nd worst song ever at 101 on this countdown is amazing so go All Time Low.

The Black Eyed Peas are at 99 with the first of 4 number 1's and their most recent one- The Time [Dirty Bit]. The song samples Dirty Dancing before it turns into a mess. I am surprised it did this well and now we only have 10 songs from 2010 between 27-95 laugh.gif The 2010 songs are dropping quicker than Nicole Scherzinger's singles solo career.

Let's start with the weaker of the 2 songs that finished at 97- the 4th of 21 songs from 2013, I Could Be The One by Avicii Vs Nicky Romero. This is by far Avicii's best of last year and is a great song probably because I love Nicky Romero's vocals. The other song at 97 is the absolutely amazing Cascada with the fantastic Evacuate The Dancefloor. I love this song so much and it is one of my favourites of 2009. I remember celebrating in my bedroom that this was #1 on my 9th birthday laugh.gif Natalie's vocals on ETD are amazing and the dance production is great- shame everything since that album has been disappointing. Another 2009 songs is at 96 which it Taio Cruz's lowest of 2 #1's in this countdown but by far the more superior one- Break Your Heart. Break Your Heart has a great tune and I always enjoy hearing it so it's a shame that dynamite has overshadowed BYH success. Break Your Heart was also big in America.

Will the next song pass an average of 5. And also The Queen released a song called shake it off but that is impossible to do in this countdown so instead we are going to shake it up. This is the last you will see of me until 5 sections time so enjoy Thermo and Chez's commentary until then wub.gif
[and sorry for the delay again kink.gif]

Nicky Romero is a producer, the vocalist is Noonie Bao wink.gif

Starting us off in 100 is the boyband who were quite big but never at the top of the boybands- The Wanted. Their first single just makes it into the top 100 which was a rare cause of a song being snubbed originally by both Capital and Radio 1 [I believe] ohmy.gif
All Time Low was snubbed by R1 and hammered by Capital actually (it was the support of Capital which lead to their popularity) happy.gif

91. The Saturdays- What About Us 5.26 (22 of 29 for ’13)
92. Example- Changed The Way You Kiss Me 5.214285714 (15 of 30 for ’11)
93. Flo Rida Ft David Guetta- Club Can't Handle Me 5.153846154 (13 of 34 for ’10)
94. B.O.B Ft Bruno Mars- Nothin On You 5 (14 of 34 for ’10)
94. Rita Ora Ft Tinie Tempah- R.I.P 5 (23 of 36 for ’12)

Firstly another Rita Ora entry, this one is only slightly more remembered than "How We Do (Party and Bull)". The production really helps it here, making it less basic-bitch than How We Do which probably helped it be more remembered, alongside its memorable chorus. Whilst the Tinie feature probably helped it get to #1, he doesn't really add anything special to it, spitting a generic rap using as many puns and innuendos as is possible in one verse. If you're ever asked to name a Tinie Tempah hit on Pointless this would be a good one to mention anyway.

Also at #94 is the debut single from B.o.B who was very popular for about 6 months before fading into the background. I don't miss him anyway as he's a very average rapper. I did quite like this one at the time though, helped by its catchy chorus sung by Bruno Mars who would become a megastar soon after the success of this song. Airplanes has definitely overshadowed this and as a result this is quite forgotten these days.

Continuing the theme of popular early 10s rappers is Flo Rida and Example who are at #93 and #92 respectively. Changed The Way You Kiss Me is my favourite Example song, mostly because of the amazing electro-house production served by Michael Woods, but Example contributes well to it too. Club Can't Handle Me is good in terms of generic dance-rap-pop too, there's nothing particularly original about it but sometimes I just like a fun dance-pop song and Flo Rida does a good job at making these.

oh yeah and some irrelevant girlband are in this section too.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Oct 23 2014, 09:36 PM

Love R.I.P, can't go wrong with contributions from Chase & Status, Drake and Tinie Tempah! Be nice if Rita went back to music like this, guess she wants to break America though.

Changed The Way You Kissed Me sounds so 2011 laugh.gif However, it will always remind me of finishing my GCSE's and Example was one of the defining artists of that year for me.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Oct 23 2014, 09:45 PM

R.I.P wub.gif Rita is just flawless on this track, the production is stunning and I love Tinie's rapping for once on this track
What about us is also amazing but Saturdays have about 10 other songs that should have been 1 > What About Us (especially forever is over). The other 3 are all quite good but not really heard any of them in ages

Posted by: Chez Wombat Oct 24 2014, 12:49 PM

81. Martin Garrix- Animals 5.8 (20/29 for 2013)

Martin Garrix's number 1 may stand out a little bit more from others in the year for being almost entirely instrumental - if it weren't for a single almost indecipherable line in there too. Getting to number 1 is something that is quite rare for instrumental tracks so this has that going for it at least, whether it will be well remembered or not is yet to be seen really, though Garrix himself is proving to not have many other tricks up his sleeve. I still hear it quite a lot personally, but that may be the circles I frequent.

82. Cheryl- Call My Name 5.75 (18/36 for 2012)

Once known as part of Girls Aloud but better known these days as being the most flawless and amazing person the world has ever seen as endorsed by the X Factor, it's no real surprise that Cheryl's managed to do quite well on her solo career so far, Call My Name was her third number 1 in 2012, a rather basic song that was a surefire smash at the time but hasn't held up all that well as it stands and is one that is buoyed in this case by her name and PR machine, and has thus not allowed it to sink more in our collective memory so far.

83. Flo Rida Ft Kesha- Right Round 5.74 (19/33 for 2009)

Flo Rida has established a formula of crapping all over classic songs and alas, it doesn't look like it's broken for him yet. This though was the first of those, sampling the brilliant Dead or Alive classic You Spin Me Round and making it about well...strippers, you can guess the rest. It introduced Ke$ha to the world errr...yay? that's about all I can say about it

84 (=) Calvin Harris Ft Florence Welch- Sweet Nothing 5.730769231 (19/36 for 2012)

Was strangely enough the song that got Calvin his first number 1 from the 18 Months era (which lasted much much longer than that), the presence of Florence Welch perhaps helped the song a lot and definitely gave it a feel of distinction from your average dance song with an unknown vocalist that's forgotten in mere months. I'd say a pretty good example of a song in the middle of the pack between remembered and forgotten atm. (Commentary's slightly wearing me out now as you can see).

84 (=) Little Mix- Wings 5.730769231 (20/36 for 2012)

Tying with Sweet Nothing is another song from the same year - the debut from 2011 X Factor champs, Little Mix. Being a female girl group, you need to be something special to win a show like this so their first single was always going to be of interest, and though it was a perfect start for them, they would go on to have further success with songs that sounded a hundred times more current and contemporary that would establish them as great popstars, which means in comparison now, Wings with it's slightly cliched message has been left in the dust a bit.

86. Duke Dumont Ft A.M.E- Need U (100%) 5.66 (21/29 for 2013)

Duke Dumont's first number 1 back in 2013 was a the first of a certain chilled type of dance that would go on to be very popular with the British public the next year. Though it has that going for it, it's a little early to say if it will be well remembered, though I personally think it's far too plain to be a classic and think Duke would go on much better things later on.

87. Robbie Williams- Candy 5.596153846 (21/36 for 2012)

When it seemed like his single selling days were behind him, Robbie came back in 2012 with the huge, very retro sounding Candy, giving him his first UK number 1 since 2004's Radio. In the long run, it probably won't stand up to his other classic number 1s like She's The One, Rock DJ & Millennium but it could still become one of those Heart FM staples you hear every so often. Chances are you probably won't hear it on Radio 1 ever again though.

88. One Direction- Little Things 5.557692308 (22/36 for 2012)

Yet another 2012 song here, it took One Direction a whole year to get a follow up chart topper to What Makes You Beautiful. The Ed Sheeran penned Little Things was different from them at the least, it wasn't a clone of WMYB and wasn't a highly produced yet poorly sung boyband ballad. It was a personal moment for them, albeit perhaps a little bit TOO personal which may be all it's remembered for in the future. Who knew that going to bed with a cup of tea makes you talk in your sleep?

89. Jay Z Ft Kanye West And Rihanna- Run This Town 5.56 (20/33 for 2009)

From 09, we have the all star collaboration between three A-list singers that was always going to go straight to number 1 just looking at the names involved, albeit it definitely wasn't as strong as it should've been and it went on to be completely overshadowed by Jay's duet with Alicia Keys that followed next and just missed the summit. Revived somewhat thanks the NBC sports controversy earlier this year, it nonetheless doesn't look like a classic in any of the three artists' monster back catalogue.

90. JLS- Everybody In Love 5.5 (21/33 for 2009)

JLS again with their second number 1 that sounded like a Blue reject that went on to be a big seller mainly as they were at the height of the fame that isn't well remembered these days, that's it.

-x-

God, that was tiring, when you're ready Dan!

76. Usher Ft Will.I.Am- OMG 6.019230769 (12 of 34 for ’10)
77. The Wanted- Glad You Came 5.928571429 (13 of 30 for ’11)
78. Flo Rida- Good Feeling 5.903846154 (16 of 36 for ’12)
79. Maroon 5 Ft Wiz Khalifa- Payphone 5.884615385 (17 of 36 for ’12)
80. Bruno Mars- The Lazy Song 5.803571429 (14 of 30 for ’11)

The section starts with 'The Lazy Song', which should've been a bit higher than this really considering its mass-popularity at the time especially with its video with Bruno and the monkeys being a viral hit, not to mention its mass airplay. Thankfully it was a very of the time success and it isn't really looked back on these days, as the song is AWFUL. I judge the public for making this (and Bruno himself) popular dry.gif It was an obvious lazy attempt to make a song that could relate with the youth of today, making its title very appropriate.

Ask 100 members of the public to name a #1 single from Maroon 5. Most of them will probably mention 'Moves Like Jagger', but no it was actually 'Payphone' which provided them with their first and only #1 hit, also their 3rd of four top 2 hits. It's standard 2010s M5 and actually quite good but it is yet another victim of Time in terms of memorability.

Ask Flo Rida how to get an easy #1 single and his response will probably be to sample a popular song and rap over it. Which is exactly what he's done here with the Etta James sample, angering many Avicii fans as of course he used that sample on 'Levels' not long before Flo Rida decided to use it (definitely not coincidentally). The song isn't bad for what it is and Flo Rida does a good job as usual, but it is very annoying that this got more sales and popularity than the far superior Levels (although Levels probably has more memorability/classic status these days)

The Wanted were the most popular boyband in Britain for about 2 weeks, which funny enough is how long 'Glad You Came' spend at #1. 2011 had its fair share of awful #1 moments, and this going to #1 and then being knocked off by JLS making it 3 consecutive weeks of boybands at #1 was one of them. Despite the song being a bit dancey I still find it a very boring listen, with its bad lyrics and the chorus being far too simplistic and clichι.

Missing out on the top 75 is Usher with 'OMG'. It became his first #1 since 2004, showing great stability for an RnB singer. Of course it wouldn't have been as successful without the will.i.am production, him having just had his biggest year ever in 2009 as a Black Eyed Pea. Despite it being one of the year's biggest hits it quickly got forgotten, due to lack of recurrent airplay and being very 2010-sounding.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Oct 25 2014, 05:05 PM

Never realised OMG went to number 1 laugh.gif Usher has much better songs in his catalogue.

Good Feeling is a good song though, such an adrenaline rush when played at the gym!

OMG felt very big at the time, I'd have been more surprised if it missed #1. It spent 5 weeks in the top 2, four of those at #2 anyhow so it wasn't one of the many "non-#1s" 2010 was famous for.

I think it's his best selling song ever in the UK, although that's only because 2004 sales were awful, otherwise Yeah would've probably sold more (it's certainly more of a classic than OMG anyway)

Posted by: n4yr Oct 25 2014, 05:59 PM

Yeah, OMG was huge at the time. It was even top 5 on the year end chart. But it does seem very forgotten now.

As an American, I approve, though both songs did reach #1. Too bad this was placed in between the classic MLJ and the annoying-as-hell "One More Night".

"Glad You Came" was their biggest hit worldwide, so I thought it would be more remembered than than, though I can understand that this impacted everywhere else at the same time "What Makes You Beautiful" did so... it was a good go for them. Still not as good as "Chasing The Sun" though...

I hardly remember "OMG" unless recalling for nostalgia partly because of "DJ Got Us Falling In Love".

Think it was performed on X Factor as well and back then most of the artists who performed on there were garenteed a number 1. (Until The Wanted happened).

OMG was performed on X Factor well after it went to #1

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Oct 31 2014, 06:48 PM

I thought OMG would be one of the biggest songs of the decade in 2010 but it is so forgettable now

Anyway my section up soon- sorry for the delay, I have been quite busy recently

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Oct 31 2014, 07:34 PM

75. Kelly Clarkson- My Life Would Suck Without You 6.1 (18 of 33 for ’09)
74. Alexandra Burke Ft Flo Rida- Bad Boys 6.14 (17 of 33 for ’09)
73. Alexandra Burke- Hallelujah 6.16 (16 of 33 for ’09)
72. Lily Allen- Somewhere Only We Know 6.18 (19 of 29 for ’13)
71. The Black Eyed Peas- Meet Me Halfway 6.2 (15 of 33 for ’09)

We've lot a lot of songs from 2010 but my section starts the mass culling of the 2009 songs- 4 crashing out in this section. We also pass the half way section and how long will it be till we enter the top 10 of one year [hint: not long] and any guesses as to what year? Anyway back to this section [and they all have nice decimal numbers laugh.gif].

Kicking off the top 75 in style is Kelly Clarkson's somehow only #1 [especially when she has made 2 of the best songs of all time], My Life Would Suck Without You. Anyway the 2009 number 1 remains a cracking tune which I have adored ever since release. I have always loved the video and the lyrics- especially in the verse 2. It is a really nice, fun and catchy song that would be very very deserving of its 1 status [as it's a 10/10 song] if it didn't stop The Queen from getting her first ever number 1 with the beautiful Romeo and Juliet based song.

Next up is a double whammy from the 2nd best X-Factor winner ever- Alexandra Burke. The better of the 2 songs just misses the top half as 2009's massive number 1 smash hit Bad Boys which featured Flo Rida and has massive sales. Bad Boys remains a catchy fantastic song which is one of the best ever debuts from an X-Factor contestant [not including winners song]. Just above and sneaking into the top half is the best ever X-Factor winning song [if anyone even mentions that earpiece torture that a contestant did to Shontelle- Impossible I will scream and get you banned from this thread smile.gif] from none other than Alexandra Burke again. Alexandra is the only act I have ever supported since live show 1 that won the competition and hallelujah is a beautiful ballad and an amazing fabulous song. I voted for Alexandra 30 times to win in that final laugh.gif Anyway I believe Hallelujah is the highest winners song in the most remembered countdown and is [I also think] the 2nd biggest ever winning X-Factor song.

Taking a break from the 2009 songs, next up is the 3rd best song from 2013 and by a million miles the best number #1 of 2013- Lily Allen with Somewhere Only We Know. The song is a beautiful cover of the Keane song and was used for the John Lewis advert last year. The video is stunning, Lily's vocals are stunning and her comeback in November was possibly one of my favourite ever comebacks [HOH is the 2nd best song from 2013, I don't think it would take a genius to work out my favourite song from 2013]. Lily's average probably got boosted by getting an 11 from someone [I wonder who laugh.gif] and is quite a bit higher than the other John Lewis song to reach #1- The Power Of Love

And last for me in this section is Meet Me Halfway by The Black Eyed Peas. This is pretty forgettable but was their 3rd #1 in 2009 and because of an X-Factor performance, this robbed one of Leona's best songs from getting to the top [Happy is amazing and haters are wrong].

And for a new idea; Here is the song of the section:

Next up I think is Chez Chez W [I have do it like a dude stuck in my head] smile.gif

Posted by: Chez Wombat Nov 1 2014, 11:30 PM

66. Taio Cruz- Dynamite 6.384615385 (10/34 for 2010)

So we're into the top 10 of 2010 already with Dynamite, by far the biggest hit for Taio Cruz, Despite starting out as a representative for UK Soul/R'n'B, he soon realised when Break Your Heart smashed the states, Americanising yourself really is the biggest guarantee for hits and sure enough a big selling number 1 both here and in the States followed. It's not proved to be the classic anthem it wants to be, but it's still relatively common/fun to hear in clubs or concerts I suppose. This proved to be the peak for Taio as far as chart success was concerned as what followed was a series of songs that were too hideously Americanised for even actual America to take interest.

67. Owl City- Fireflies 6.326923077 (11/34 for 2010)

Just missing the top 10 is a song I'm quite sad to be revealing this early - Eccentric by name and mature, Fireflies by Owl City was a wonderful 80s-esque dream-like and synthy song that didn't sound like anything else in the charts at the time and was a surprise big selling hit on both sides of the pond in early 2010. This had universal appeal and really should have gone down as a classic, but it wasn't really so and it appears his brand of music was a bit too eccentric for radios to keep as a staple, thus as 2010 wore on, the song was cast aside in favour of more obviously radio friendly hits and has faded more and more since, which is perhaps a big part of it becoming a bit more forgotten over the years despite it's big sales. Still, it's a lovely listen and not exactly forgotten which is more that can be said for most 2010 number 1s.

68. Jason Derulo Ft 2 Chainz- Talk Dirty 6.32 (18/29 for 2013)

From just last year is the number 1 from probably the most punchable man in music atm, Jason Derulo. Talk Dirty perhaps stood out from the rest of his rather forgettable back catalogue with the quite catchy and distinctive Middle Eastern instrumental riff going on in the chorus, though whether it will be well remembered remains to be seen. Did I mention I hate his smug face, ugh.

69. The Script Ft Will.I.Am- Hall Of Fame 6.25 (14/36 for 2012)

The Script were still searching for that elusive number 1 back in 2012 so the logical answer would be banking off the success of The Voice UK and the success of a certain duet done by two judges on The Voice US by doing the same over here, with Danny's band collaborating with serial music offender, Will.i.am. Commercial radio definitely lapped this up and I withstood this pretentious, MOR, tacky, cliched, whiny shite for most of last year and so that suggests that it may be well remembered in the future. I'm not the biggest fan so I kinda hope it doesn't...

70. DJ Fresh Ft Rita Ora- Hot Right Now 6.230769231 (15/36 for 2012)

Finally for this very waffly section is DJ Fresh's second appearance and Rita Ora's final appearance here. Going to number 1 in early 2012, it couldn't really stand up to some of the future dance classics that 2012 would go on to offer throughout the year, but it's a catchy, fun track that may still get the odd club play in the future.

61. Britney Spears Ft Will.I.Am- Scream And Shout 6.56 (16 of 29 for ’13)
61. JLS- Beat Again 6.56 (13 of 33 for ’09)
63. Olly Murs Ft Flo Rida- Troublemaker 6.557692308 (13 of 36 for ’12)
64. Eminem Ft Rihanna- The Monster 6.54 (17 of 29 for ’13)
65. Calvin Harris- I'm Not Alone 6.48 (14 of 33 for ’09)

The 10/10 moment that is I'm Not Alone, arguably Calvin's first big step outside the nu-disco sound that he was known for and going towards the Calvin we know and love today, starts us off again at #65. I'd like to think it has gone down as a classic in terms of Calvin songs as it really is brilliant, although more recent hits like Summer and We Found Love have probably stuck in people's minds more.

One of the amazing chart facts about 2010 is that the year-end #1 of that year did not actually go to #1 (Just the Way You Are (Amazing) has overtaken said song's total sales since though). What happens if you put the two artists behind the song back together then? An instant #1 hit of course, although not one that sold nearly as much as their first collaboration. This is what happened for Eminem and Rihanna who enter at #64 with The Monster, which was quite disappointing and felt like a desperate attempt at a big hit by Eminem for featuring Rihanna again and the basic rap-pop production.

Olly Murs also surprised nobody by going to #1 with the lead single from his third album, Troublemaker. The Flo Rida featuring hit single was a standard Olly song but a good one too. And it saved Girls Aloud from the further embarrassment of having their comeback fall from #1 straight out the top 10, as if a 2-14 drop and their last ever single missing the top 75 was bad enough.

Continuing the X Factor theme is JLS with their debut single and first #1 hit. It was a good debut anyway but sadly they'd only match the quality of it a few more times whilst making some complete rubbish (including the infamously awful The Club Is Alive)

Which means we finish with will.i.am and Britney Spears whose next-level dopeness had all yo faves bowing down and being slayed. Featuring Britney's iconic rapping and a banging beat, of course it was gonna be a huge smash. Whilst it may be will.i.am's most remembered #1 as a solo artist, he is yet to come as a group member so stay tuned.

Ultraviolence coming with 56 - 60 next cheer.gif

Posted by: #Slayberry Nov 3 2014, 11:31 PM

"Dynamite" never made it to #1 in the US though... It was blocked by "Love The way You Lie" tongue.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Nov 4 2014, 10:00 AM

Not quite sure how Beat Again is more remembered than Hot Right Now or Talk Dirty? Never heard anyone play that JLS song, whearas even my mum knows the other two and my friends/work colleagues play them all the time.

59. Miley Cyrus- We Can't Stop 6.66 (15 of 29 for ’13)
59. David Guetta Ft Akon- Sexy Bitch 6.66 (12 of 33 for ’09)
58. La Roux- Bulletproof 6.78 (11 of 33 for ’09)
57. Olly Murs- Dance With Me Tonight 6.892857143 (12 of 30 for ’11)
56. Jessie J- Domino 6.980769231 (12 of 36 for ’12)

Starting off this section is Miley Cyrus with her worst era yet. We Can't Stop featured a terrible video [that looked like a masterpiece compared to a later song of hers] and was a pretty bland and useless pop song. I wouldn't be surprised to see this song near the bottom of this countdown if it wasn't for Miley's transformation. Sexy Bitch was one of those rare songs that I think went OA/OS [or it was rush released] and also climbed to #1. It was an ok song but a disappointment by Guetta after the amazing When Love Takes Over. Olly Murs has made 2 fantastic and amazing songs- busy and dance with me tonight- the latter of which features in 57th place with an average of 6.89. Dance With Me Tonight is really catchy and a great pop song to listen to and it also inspiried the amazing Dear Future Husband.

Back to when Jessie J made amazing songs is the 2012 number 1 Domino which ended up one of the biggest sellers of the year. Domino was a fun and another catchy song in this section. And onto the song of the section we arrive at the 11th most remembered #1 of 2009 which is La Roux's Bulletproof. Bulletproof was the 2nd single to do any chart business from the album and was La Roux's 1st and sadly only number 1. In For The Kill still remains their best song and so nearly went to the top

And it's Chez I am going to guess next but I don't know kink.gif

Song Of The Section:

51. Justin Timberlake- Mirrors 7.1 (13/29 for 2013)

We're approaching the big songs now that certainly weren't non number 1s but perhaps aren't quite well remembered enough to be considered modern classics. Mirrors, JT's non-buzz single comeback was wonderful, trademark of his sound and filled with the slick and emotional style that was captured his best moments over the 00s. It was one of the few long runners at number 1 in 2013 so it's quite odd perhaps that it's not seen amongst the top songs of 2013, but I s'pose you can't say it's forgotten just yet, Kiss FM probably won't be giving it up for years yet...

52. B.o.B Ft Hayley Williams- Airplanes 7.057692308 (9/34 for 2010)

Definitely far more of a convincing introduction to B.o.B than Nothin' On You ever was, Airplanes wasn't exactly groundbreaking as far as pop-rap ballads go but the talents of the then still fairly under the radar Hayley Williams were used to great effect here. It far outsold it's predecessor and was one of the biggest selling number 1s of the year. Despite a rather good start to his chart career, B.o.B was just a bit too non-descript to capture the public's imagination again and thus far, has failed to have any more of his work remain in public collective memory.

53. Olly Murs Ft Rizzle Kicks- Heart Skips A Beat 7.053571429 (11/30 for 2011)

The question whether Olly could remain the momentum of his first era was instantly cast aside when this came along. Heart Skips a Beat is just really how a fun and catchy pop record should be done and even the rap verse doesn't feel completely pointless. I will admit that I hear Dance With Me Tonight a lot more than this these days, but for me at least, it's still definitely his high point.

54. Rudimental Ft Ella Eyre- Waiting All Night 7.04 (14/29 for 2013)

Rudimental proved what was quite hard for a dance act to do and managed another big number 1 hit that actually was almost as big for them as Feel The Love. It remains to be seen whether Waiting All Night can become as much as a potential modern day classic as their previous number 1, though I can only hope not as it really is vastly inferior. What it could be is the only song with vocals from Ella Eyre that will live on in the public's memory, bless her.

55. Florence + The Machine- Spectrum 7.038461538 (11/36 for 2012)

Just missing out on the top 10 most remembered number 1s of 2012 is the first huge hit for FloMac, with a little help from Calvin Harris, an album track that would've probably struggled to get top 10 otherwise into a big selling number 1. A rare collaboration that allows both the producer and singer to both work their magic to produce something special, so much so that Calvin attempted to repeat the formula a few months later. Gawsh though, FloMac, get on with some new material already.

-x-

This will not turn into the floppiness of the 2013 Points Chart results people, don't worry ~

46. Lily Allen - The Fear 7.24 (10 of 33 for ’09)
47. Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup - We Speak No Americano 7.153846154 (8 of 34 for ’10)
48. Professor Green (feat. Emeli Sandι) - Read All About It 7.142857143 (9 of 30 for ’11)
49. Labrinth (feat. Emeli Sandι) - Beneath Your Beautiful 7.134615385 (10 of 36 for ’12)
50. Pitbull (feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) - Give Me Everything 7.125 (10 of 30 for ’11)

-

Me not working hard? Yeah right, picture that with a kodak. cool.gif Or better yet, go to Times Square. Take a picture of me with a kodak. Those are the #ic0nic opening lines of Pitbull's 'Give Me Everything', which also opens the top 50 part of the most remembered #1 hits of the past 5 years. A typical Pitbull song with dance-pop production, with this style being big in 2011 of course it was going to be big. It actually went on to sell a million, but that's more down to the big sales climate than the actual lasting appeal of it, and as a song it's not amongst the top few remembered songs of 2011, and in many years time it'll be Pitbull himself and his rapping style and catchphrases that will be more remembered than his actual songs themselves.

Up next it's Labrinth, and after 'Earthquake' being a massive smash hit it was unlikely that he'd ever get another song as big as that, but 'Beneath Your Beautiful' proved any doubters wrong, being shot to #1 after an X Factor performance, and remaining high in the chart due to its appeal as a winter ballad and the UK's love for Emeli Sandι, who he duets with on the track. With Labrinth about to do another X Factor performance, he could easily get another smash in 'Jealous', although its chances of going to #1 are very small with Band Aid 30 dominating.

Emeli Sandι has 2 songs in a row here, reminds me of when she used to perform on 2 major TV shows in a row, anyway this was arguably the moment where she really blew up as a solo artist, being featured on a Professor Green track but with her chorus being the real selling point here, further proved by the success of her solo version of this song. As a song itself I'm not a big fan, it got boring fast.

The amazing We No Speak Americano, my personal favourite song of 2010, is at #47. I was very pleased to see it doing so well and whilst it doesn't get played much now I'm sure it'd be instantly recognisable by many when it does. Both artists on the song never got a follow-up hit, to be expected, but that hasn't hurt it here as it's comfortably in the top 50.

Lily Allen finishes the section with The Fear, her 2nd #1. One of her best songs and most remembered too alongside Smile and Not Fair. It got 4 weeks at #1 which seems very good but it doesn't seem to have the lasting appeal of a song with that long a stay at #1. Its lyrics are certainly interesting anyway so it will at least be remembered by some for that.

45. Jennifer Lopez Ft Pitbull- On The Floor 7.410714286 (8 of 30 for ’11)
44. The Black Eyed Peas- Boom Boom Pow 7.46 (9 of 33 for ’09)
43. Rage Against The Machine- Killing In The Name 7.48 (8 of 33 for ’09)
42. Bruno Mars- Grenade 7.517857143 (7 of 30 for ’11)

This section features 3 career highs, one of the most famous chart battles ever and the biggest band of 2009.

Starting us off this section [and 500 other inferior collaborations between the pair] is Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull with the amazing On The Floor- in my view a career best for both artists. The song debuted with a massive 133k, spent 2 weeks at number 1 and knocked a very unknown song off the top spot. The song still sounds great today, especially that infectious chorus. The other career best in this section is the 7th most remembered song from 2011 [and the 7th biggest selling song of 2011] in the form of Grenade from Bruno Mars which is a beautiful ballad. This was another big number 1 spending 2 weeks at number 1 with sales over 100k in both weeks and selling 850k in 2011.

The Black Eyed Peas were the biggest band in 2009 scoring 3 number 1's and the first of them- Boom Boom Pow- is the 2nd to fall in 44th place with a good average of 7.46. And even though the song is terrible, due to a massive facebook campaign, Killing In The Name beat the X-Factor to #1 in one of the biggest chart battles of all time.

And it's Chez next with 6 songs as we have a joint 40th. Predictions?

Song Of The Section:

36. Lady Gaga Ft Beyonce- Telephone 7.769230769 (6/34 for 2010)

Just missing the top 5 (!) most remembered number 1s of 2010 according to Buzzjack is the at-the-time much anticipated megastar duet between Lady Gaga and Beyonce (well in truth the second after the better best forgotten Videophone a few months back) The names alone were enough to get it to number 1 but that was backed up by quite a notable, to put it lightly, video to ensure it trounced all competition. For all it's big names and very solid sales, as a song itself, you'd be hard pressed to say it was amongst the best of either artist's huge back catalogue and definitely hasn't aged as well as some of them.

37. Rihanna Ft Drake- What's My Name 7.75 (6/30 for 2011)

Rihanna's second single from Loud only further cemented her newly found status as one of the biggest, stratospheric female stars in the world. A more R'n'B inspired and lyrically raunchy (square root of 69 anyone?) number than Only Girl..., it had no problem shooting to the top of the charts at the beginning of the year and selling very well throughout the year. It may not be the most remembered out of Rihanna's vast back catalogue, but I think it's definitely somewhat intact in public memory and perhaps opened the gateway for a slightly more explicit Rihanna from 2011 onwards...

38. Ellie Goulding- Burn 7.74 (11/29 for 2013)

It's Ellie Goulding's first EVER number 1 in her INSANELY LONG career!!11 Having released a generally quite experimental and dark album with Halcyon and still yet to score a massive hit out of it, it was only inevitable that she'd sell out completely and release a Ryan Tedder-penned, poppy and radio friendly single that could be sung by pretty much anyone, nonetheless it worked in her favour, earning her a number 1 over here and even making a splash in the States. It did, if anything, turn her into a big name in current British music and made her an all round competent commercial pop star. Shoulda been My Blood tho :'(

39. Tinie Tempah Ft Eric Turner- Written In The Stars 7.634615385 (7/34 for 2010)

There was a time when Tinie Tempah wasn't completely pointless and actually was one of the leading names in British pop/rap. Written In The Stars, featuring vocals from Eric Turner, was a change of pace for him, an anthemic and heartfelt ode to his earlier days and rise to fame. Definitely a last hurrah for him thus far at least as he would go on to attempt to recreate it next time around, and still largely present today as the standard 'dramatic'/'journey' style music on montages, it was one of 2010's better number 1s.

(=) 40. David Guetta Ft Kelly Rowland- When Love Takes Over 7.62 (7/33 for 2009)

David Guetta is a fairly big name nowadays which has unfortunately allowed him to make some of the laziest dance tunes of the past few years and still manage to get a hit out of it, but this was undeniably the moment he went from fairly well known DJ to big name as it was his first UK number 1 and hit after hit followed since. It was a very good, quite anthemic summery dance number (even if the piano completely ripped off Coldplay's Clocks), I must admit the areas I frequent tend to favour the follow up, Sexy Bitch to this in terms of airplay but I guess Buzzjack thinks differently (or just wants to deny Akon ever existed, who can blame 'em?)

(=) 40. Macklemore Ft Ryan Lewis- Thrift Shop 7.62 (12/29 for 2013)

Tying at 40th place is one of the first big hits of last year by the then completely unknown Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with their ode to second hand goods. It reached number 1 in early 2013 making it one of the few independent artists to achieve a number 1 single. Fairly 'novelty' in it's subject matter, it's nonetheless quite an infectious, sax lead number, it also inspired https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSroGlkmXQE which will surely make it go down in history as the trigger to one of the best things that ever happened to music. Macklemore, with a little help with Ryan Lewis, would go on to prove those thinking this was a gimmick and that he'd be a one hit wonder wrong with some more deeper and personal songs later in the year.

that Kidz Bop cover of Thrift Shop laugh.gif they really know how to make a song hilariously awful

soz bout the delι~ here's your 34 through to 31!

31. Rudimental Ft John Newman- Feel The Love 8.134615385 (9 of 36 for ’12)
32. Naughty Boy Ft Sam Smith- La La La 7.98 (8 of 29 for ’13)
33. Lady Gaga- Just Dance 7.86 (6 of 33 for ’09)
34. Icona Pop Ft Charli XCX- I Love It 7.84 (9 of 29 for ’13)
34. John Newman- Love Me Again 7.84 (9 of 29 for ’13)

-

At #34 we have ARGH NEED TER NOA NAAAH and Car Crash, funny enough they tie as they were released just one week apart from each other, with each getting its turn at being #1. I like both of them, Icona Pop moreso, and they've been remembered quite well, whether they can still remain in the public consciousness after a few more years remains to be seen.

Lady GaGa with her debut single enters at #33, it's been overshadowed a fair bit by the more successful followups Poker Face and Bad Romance but it was a big hit in its own right too and for that it gets it a respectable position in the countdown.

One of the biggest hits of last year and the song that got Sam Smith lots of popularity (if he didn't already have enough from Latch), helping his solo career to be huge in 2014. Poor Naughty Boy only had diminishing returns after this though, and I imagine most people will recognise this as a Sam Smith song now. If only he didn't release a sub-par Emeli Sandι collab (his millionth collab with her, by the way) as the follow-up.

Double Sir Newman in this section, as we have his Rudimental collab next. For many Buzzjack users it will be best known for dethroning Loreen from the iTunes #1 spot, but also for being a brilliant tune in itself. It was great to have a new drum n bass act topping the chart and with a song as good as this one too. Really glad it's managed to stick in public memory too.

30. Miley Cyrus- Wrecking Ball 8.3 (7 of 29 for ’13)
29. Lorde- Royals 8.32 (6 of 29 for ’13)
28. Fun- We Are Young 8.442307692 (8 of 36 for ’12)
27. Swedish House Mafia- Don't You Worry Child 8.519230769 (7 of 36 for ’12)

And the last section before we count down the worst remembered songs of the last 5 years features 2 from 2012 and 2 from 2013.
Starting us off is Wrecking Ball which is a great song but has definitely one of the worst videos of the last few years. The video and Miley's transformation this year are probably the 2 reasons this did so well but I wish it was her #11 hits and 7 Things that were this big.

Lorde's amazing Royals slots in at 29 with a fantastic average of 8.32 and nearly became a shock qualifier. It's nice when a song like this becomes a big hit.
Fun are at 28 with their massive smash hit We Are Young which spent about a million years in the top 10 let alone the top 40. Anyway it did seem it would be more remembered a couple of years ago but like most of the biggest sellers from that year, the artist has just disappeared.
At 27 is the diabolical last single from Swedish House Mafia which only sounds good when it is slowed down

So the worst songs will be starting soon so please remember to submit votes in those sections smile.gif

And this will be continuing this weekend with the countdown of the bottom 16. Predictions?

(And sorry for the major delay kink.gif All my fault kink.gif)

And we are back, continuing the results that even I forgot were still happening. Oops. Let's get on with it~

LEAST REMEMBERED

http://postimage.org/http://postimage.org/http://postimage.org/http://postimage.org/

16. Storm Queen - Look Right Through (MK Remix) 5.76
15. Bingo Players - Get Up (Rattle) (feat. Far East Movement) 4.28
13. Example - Stay Awake 3.52
13. Sam Bailey - Skyscraper 3.52

Storm Queen got a big club smash thanks to MK on the remix and ever since has disappeared again, having not released a single since. Unfortunately the song seems to be quite forgotten already too, it's one of my favourite songs of the decade but it was a bit of a non-#1 in the UK, though its chart run and sales were decent.

Bingo Players, whilst they were still a duo, got a #1 which didn't spent that long in the chart and wasn't anywhere near the top 40 sellers of the year. A few low sales January weeks and nothing else out secured its position however. Such a shame that it got a pointless rap added to it but it probably would've done worse in its instrumental form.

Not sure exactly how Stay Awake went to #1, but luckily it did, but unlike Changed... it was out the chart after 2 months signalling the start of Example's downfall. He would only go on to have one more big hit after this and that was as a featured artist.

Sam Bailey did a karaoke version of Demi Lovato hit Skyscraper, and turned it from a boring screechfest into a borefest. Which is an improvement but still not something I liked much.

Loved Stay Awake at the time heart.gif

Example was never going to be as big as he was in 2011 though, he was everywhere that year!
