26th November 2017

It's the sadly late David Cassidy belatedly topping my chart 45 years on with his best record, the fab version of The Young Rascals How Can I Be Sure topped the UK chart but was more modestly appreciated by me at the time. By 1987 I had loved it enough to top it in a live version, but the original remains the best and it was one of my "broken-heart turn to" tracks in the noughties, guaranteed to cry bucketloads to it. I loved The Partridge Family records as 13-year-old, and this track sums up his teen appeal to the girls: sensitive boy-next-door just looking for the right one. Teens couldn't resist. In at 10, I'm A Clown is his other best solo record, with a sprinkling of others lower down the chart, though not I Think I Love You and his other 4 chart-toppers in my charts as they have had great chart runs already.

That's bad news for Sufjan Stevens stuck at 2 again behind an oldie, but there are big climbs into the 20 for Cola and Phases. Fall Out Boy also bound into the 30, and Paloma Faith the 40, while U2 out-peak the previous single in one week on the chart already. Craig David's chart revival has left me feeling unmoved until this joint Bastille record. Neither of them have been what you call chart fave regulars for me (though Craig has topped my chart), but I was persuaded by the Friday TV spot when his response to a nasty prank involving a fake mean-spirited granny was just so admirable. A man you can trust your granny with!

hi john,

not surprised david cassidy tops you chart this week!
an all time classic...
his 80s-ish comeback track 'the last kiss' is also a fave of mine...
paloma rebounding, kings & queens is big for me at the mo...
cola makes a big jump!
u2 are my most played artists according to last fm, but their recent output has been a bit dull for me (save from the kygo remix) , this track passes me by a bit...
the craig / bastille collab however is really good...
a new tame impala track.. need to check it out!

good chart as always!

Hello John!
Sad that David Cassidy passed away, but it's good to see #1 in your chart.
That jump for Cola... wow!
U2's new song is alright.
And it's great to see Tame Impala and especially Craig David & Bastille debuting in your chart!
Great chart overall!

Hi Toffo!

Glad you like David C's classic, I expect most folk on here dont know it and dont love the teen heart-throb! The Last Kiss was also fab, very George Michael (not surprisingly) and now both tragically gone.

Don't know Kings & Queens one to check out!

U2 have def lost the magic of late - it makes the right sounds, but all is a bit plodding. They need to go cutting edge again, as they did during the early 90's.

cheers!

Thanks Sergej!

Yes sad about David C, still a bit unreal for me. Tame Impala is a grower, and Craig & Bastille were never 2 of my most fave artists, so the combination shouldn't have worked - but it does!

cheers!

Poor Sufjan! I hope only musicians you don't care for die this week and that you don't go to see any more gigs or indeed venture outside at all for fear of hearing a forgotten classic somewhere.

You may venture outside again once Sufjan has ruled.

Yes, oops! bad timing! ohmy.gif I'm hoping for a January boost, if not before, as I have been contemplating how under-appreciated Sufjan is, and that needs to change smile.gif
