In a slight change of plan I'm splitting the results over two nights, doing about half tonight and leaving the other half to the hours leading up to the actual ceremony.
'Best Picture' and the acting categories will be saved until tomorrow but we'll kick off with some of the others very shortly if anyone would like to get speculating.
Makeup and Hairstyling
And the winner is ..
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Our first award of the night goes to The Grand Budapest Hotel! Just look what the team did to Tilda Swinton, unrecognisible. I didn't cotton on until searching for an image to use.
1st The Grand Budapest Hotel [5 first preference votes, 3 second preference]
2nd Guardians of the Galaxy [5 first preference votes]
3rd Foxcatcher [1 second preference]
A seemingly tough category when Steve Carell's transformation can only muster up on second preference vote for Foxcatcher.
Costume Design
And the winner is ..
Into The Woods
1st Into The Woods [3 first preference, 3 second preference]
2nd The Grand Budapest Hotel [3 first preference, 2 second preference]
3rd Maleficent [3 first preference]
4th Mr Turner [2 first preference]
5th Inherent Vice [1 second preference]
Almost a second award for The Grand Budapest already but it's narrowly pipped by musical Into The Woods! Featuring an ensemble cast, the designers did a great job of dressing everyone up as fairytale characters with some fine detail put into the outfits.
Cinematography
And the winner is ..
The Grand Budapest Hotel
1st The Grand Budapest Hotel (4)
2nd Birdman (3)
3rd Mr Turner (2)
4th Ida (1)
5th Unbroken
Another award for The Grand Budapest Hotel. Far from my favourite movie of last year in terms of storyline but it's hard to deny the scale of this and how great it looks visually.
Adapted Screenplay
And the winner is ..
The Imitation Game
1st The Imitation Game (8)
2nd The Theory of Everything (3)
3rd Whiplash (1)
4th Inherent Vice / American Sniper
Loosely based on the biography 'Alan Turing: The Enigma', The Imitation Game dominates the Adapted Screenplay category. The closest competitor is The Theory of Everything - big up the movies focused on Brits.
Let's have one more tonight and hope people are around tomorrow as the buzz warms up
Original Screenplay
And the winner is ..
Boyhood
1st Boyhood (7)
2nd The Grand Budapest Hotel (2)
3rd Birdman / Foxcatcher (1)
5th Nightcrawler
Another easy victory in a screenplay category, this time for Boyhood, one of the most acclaimed movies of the past year and one that began shooting in 2002 when I was SIX. And Buzzjack wasn't a thing yet.
Will definitely be here tomorrow for the rest of the awards
The grand Budapest hotel is good but I don't get how it is nominated for so many awards. Though the makeup is quite good, birdman deserved to win for cinematography, Lubezski does such an extrordinary job on birdman he deserves to win. Would have preferred the criminally underrated Maleficent to win costume design but into the woods was also very good.
The imitation game and boyhood scripts were great (especially boyhood) but I did prefer the whiplash and birdman scripts.
Is it too late to change my vote for best song Jahq?
Noo go ahead, it's not added up yet!
I think The Grand Budapest Hotel is pretty deserving of what it's up for but at the same time I don't really dig it as a piece of entertainment. The makeup, costumes, directing etc. are good but when it comes down to the Best Picture category I'd only rank it 6th.
Deserved awards so far. Although I think my vote went to 'Guardians...' for the "Make-Up/Hair Styling" award, which would have been preferable. But can't grumble at GBH winning that one. 'Boyhood' deserved that one so much! Lets hope it wins that tomorrow (I think it should do).
Original Score
And the winner is ..
Interstellar
1st Interstellar (6)
2nd The Theory of Everything (4)
3rd The Imitation Game (1)
4th The Grand Budapest Hotel / Mr Turner
Can't say that I pay much attention to the score of a movie but apparently Interstellar had a good one! Presumably better than the rest of the film.
YES
Ineterstellar's score is beautiful and legendary, it even made my personal chart albums chart
Will be back at 9 ):
Animated Film
And the winner is ..
Big Hero 6
1st Big Hero 6 (7)
2nd The Boxtrolls / How To Train Your Dragon 2 / The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (1)
5th Song of the Sea
Trouncing the competition is Disney's Big Hero 6, an incredibly sweet and brilliant animated feature. The Lego Movie would've made this category more interesting / tighter I assume but I hope this would've won out regardless!
Shout out to the animated short 'Feast' too which hopefully walks away with the Oscar tonight.
Original Song
And the winner is ..
"Glory" from Selma
1st Glory (5)
2nd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL4uhaQ58Rk (3)
3rd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StTqXEQ2l-Y (2)
4th https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8TsAh-zYFI / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMxL3_P9eNE
And John Legend triumphs on Buzzjack!! So pleased to see "Glory" get the recognition, the movie wasn't really my thing but this song playing at the end sounded so powerful with everything that it stands for.
Adam Levine takes 2nd with "Lost Stars" from Begin Again, one of my very favourite movies of 2014 and the song is pretty decent too, very easy listening.
"Everything Is Awesome" is 3rd, fun in the context of the movie but otherwise pretty grating.
No first preference votes for Rita.
Visual Effects
And the winner is ..
Interstellar
1st Interstellar (4)
2nd Guardians of the Galaxy / Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2)
4th Captain America: The Winter Soldier / X-Men: Days of Future Past (1)
The love was shared out here but Interstellar nabs a second award and well, the space visuals were a highlight where the story left something to be desired.
Not seen any of the Animated films but 'Big Hero 6' is the only one that appeals to me.
John Legend winning an award on Buzzjack though
Visual Effects is a hard one to judge because it's not as though the effects in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' or 'Guardians of the Galaxy' could really have been better but the effects that I've seen from trailers/clips of 'Interstellar' look amazing!
Yay for interstellar winning another award, one of my favourites of last year The visual effects were stunning
Looks like my last vote change gave glory the win over lost stars, glory is really nice and surprisingly good for a John Legend track
Also happy Big Hero 6 won that category, absolutely amazing animation Though the best animation of 2014 wasn't nominated [I'm talking about the book of life not that awful brick one]
Directing
And the winner is ..
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
1st Richard Linklater, Boyhood (8)
2nd Alejandro González Iñárittu, Birdman (2)
3rd Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel / Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game (1)
5th Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
All those years have paid off! Absolutely no competition here and not a category I'd expect an upset in tonight. Does dedication get much bigger.
Interestingly the next Richard Linklater project appears to star Glee cast member Blake Jenner Get it.
Glad Linklater won that, his direction is great
Not sure if I want him or Inarritu to win tonight
Interstellar for score - best winner Amazing score. I don't think it will win tonight but deserves to do so.
Big Hero 6
Supporting Actor
And the winner is ..
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
1st Ethan Hawke, Boyhood (5)
2nd Edward Norton, Birdman / J.K. Simmons, Whiplash (3)
4th Robert Duvall, The Judge / Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
Two in a row for Boyhood! Not one that I necessarily agree with as I think the movie shines elsewhere, whereas Edward Norton & J.K. Simmons are major highlights in their respective movies, but Boyhood is getting the love and I can't hold anything against this movie.
I would have gone with Edward Norton.
YEEESS!!!!
So happy Ethan won here, he gave such a great performance
JK was great and Edward was very good also
Supporting Actress
And the winner is ..
Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
1st Patricia Arquette, Boyhood (6)
2nd Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game / Emma Stone, Birdman (2)
4th Laura Dern, Wild / Meryl Streep, Into the Woods (1)
Boyhood locks up the supporting categories! Patricia Arquette does a wonderful job of portraying the mother in the movie and looks to be a very safe bet to walk home with the Oscar tonight in what is in my opinion the strongest category. Can't fault a single one of them.
Nothing in the main acting categories now but with the supporting categories and director, will Boyhood top it off with Best Picture later?
Yay for Patricia She gives such a great performance (even though I think Ellar, Lorelei and Ethan were all better)
I'd actually call in the weakest category
Patricia gives a very good performance, Laura Keira Emma give good performances and Meryl is ok and don't know how it got a nomination. There is just not an outstanding performance in this category for me like there is in the other ones
Well Emma Stone was my top preference, being my highlight of Birdman, so I'd class her performance as outstanding. And Meryl is pretty easy to rank last but the other three and fairly interchangeable for me and I think it's a very consistent category, definitely the hardest when it came to ranking.
Best Actor
And the winner is ..
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything
1st Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything (7)
2nd Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game (3)
3rd Steve Carell, Foxcatcher (2)
4th Bradley Cooper, American Sniper / Michael Keaton, Birdman
Brit representation! Eddie Redmayne strolls to victory for his portrayal as Steven Hawking whilst his presumed closest competitor tonight Michael Keaton fails to pick up a first preference vote.
Best Actress
And the winner is ..
Reese Witherspoon, Wild
1st Reese Witherspoon, Wild (4)
2nd Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything / Julianne Moore, Still Alice / Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl (2)
5th Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night (1)
The love was spread around but ultimately Reese Witherspoon was voted the winner for her role as Cheryl Strayed in Wild. Reese manages to pull off what appears to be a physically and emotionally demanding role. It would be wonderful if she could repeat this result tonight but Julianna sounds like the most dead set cert.
OMG YES YES YES AT REESE WINNING She is so stunning and gives one of the best performances of the century
Eddie is good but would have preferred Benedict or Michael win
Best Picture
And the winner is ..
Boyhood
1st Boyhood (6)
2nd The Grand Budapest Hotel (2)
3rd American Sniper / The Imitation Game / The Theory of Everything / Whiplash (1)
7th Selma / Birdman
Shock After getting Best Director, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, who could've predicted this?
A thoroughly deserving winner regardless, it could be seen as getting so much praise because of what some may describe as a 'gimmick' but you've got to be dedicated to make a film over 12 years. I just can't imagine what it feels like for the cast and crew involved and it manages to be a stunning, gripping movie without having a big story.
A good bet to win tonight but it feels like a tight race with Birdman.
So how many Buzzjack winners will be replicated in a couple of hours?
Yay Hope boyhood wins officially as well, absolutely amazing film
Thanks for hosting this Jahq, it has been amazing
*echos what Ultra said about Reese*
Nice set of results. The only one I have an issue with is, Reese winning "Best Actress". I've not seen 'Wild' yet and like Julianne, I'm not going to knock their performance, but I really thought Rosamund deserved it the most. But I've stated why elsewhere so I won't go into it again
Very pleased to see 'Big Hero 6' beat all the others too!
