Noteworthy Mash-Ups

Ok, I admit, I am probably not the best person to start such a topic as I don't know an awful lot of songs which have been combined or "mashed up" to make one sound.

As best as I could find, here are some examples of some mainstream songs to have received such treatment;

Bastille – Of The Night {#2 in 2013}
What we have here are two classic 90's dance hits being mashed up into one hit for Bastille.
A cover of Corona – The Rhythm Of The Night {#2 in 1994} and Snap! – Rhythm Is A Dancer {#1 in 1992}

David Guetta vs. The Egg – Love Don't Let Me Go (Walking Away) {#3 in 2006}
A mix of David Guetta – Love Don't Let Me Go {#46 in 2002} and The Egg – Walking Away {#56 in 2006}

Fragma – Toca's Miracle {#1 in 2000}
A mix of Fragma – Toca Me {#11 in 1999} and Coco – I Need A Miracle {#39 in 1997}

Green Day vs. Oasis, Travis & Eminem – Boulevard Of Broken Songs {DNC}
A mix of Green Day – Boulevard Of Broken Dreams {#5 in 2004}, Oasis – Wonderwall {#2 in 1995}, Travis – Writing To Reach You {#14 in 1999} and Eminem – Sing For The Moment {#6 in 2003}

Jay-Z vs. Linkin Park – Numb Encore {#14 in 2004}
A mix of Linkin Park – Numb {#14 in 2003} and Jay-Z – Encore {DNC}

Mousse T vs. The Dandy Warhols – Horny As A Dandy {#17 in 2006}
A mix of Mousse T & Hot'n'Juicy – Horny {#2 in 1998} and The Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You {#5 in 2001}

Mylo vs. Miami Sound Machine – Doctor Pressure {#3 in 2005}
A mix of Mylo – Drop The Pressure {#19 in 2004} and Miami Sound Machine – Dr Beat {#6 in 1984}

Richard X vs. Liberty X – Being Nobody {#3 in 2003}
Ok, again, not a traditional mash-up as both artists worked to make this track. It is a mash-up of The Human League – Being Boiled {#6 in 1982} and lyrics from Rufus & Chaka Khan's – Ain't Nobody {#6 in 1989}

Snow Patrol vs. The Police – Every Car You Chase {DNC}
A mix of Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars {#6 in 2006} and The Police – Every Breath You Take {#1 in 1983}

Stuntmasters – The Ladyboy Is Mine {#10 in 2001}
A mix of Modjo – Lady (Hear Me Tonight) {#1 in 2000} and Brandy & Monica – The Boy Is Mine {#2 in 1998}

99 Souls feat. Destiny's Child & Brandy – The Girl Is Mine
A mix of Destiny's Child – Girl {#6 in 2005} and Brandy & Monica – The Boy Is Mine {#2 in 1998}

Those are the only ones I could find in my music collection, but there may be many others.

Are you a fan of mash-ups or do you think songs should be left how they were intended?

What's your thoughts on the selection above?

P.s. It's my first time attempting YouTube videos, so I hope they work ok!

Some others that come to mind:

Beats International - Dub Be Good to Me (SOS Band 'Just Be Good to Me' and The Clash 'The Guns of the Brixton' and I believe quite a few other songs)
Alex Gaudino - Destination Calabria (Alex Gaudino 'Destination Unknown' & Rune 'Calabria')
Mason vs Princess Superstar - Perfect Exceeder (Mason's 'Exceeder' and Princess Superstar's 'Perfect')
Glee Cast - Halo/Walking on Sunshine (based on the Beyonce/ Katrina & The Waves songs)

oh and this ofc. *.*

I like most of the mash ups I've heard, so it's in some ways quite saddening that they're a lot less of a thing these days, 99 Souls aside, as they can bring out the best in songs. Doctor Pressure a shining example heart.gif

Bastille - Of the Night

Good point, whilst it's not quite a traditional mash up of mixing two existing recordings, the way that the two dance hits were covered and remixed into this one is a shining example of how well they actually work together.

Combines Hard To Explain by The Strokes (#16 in 2001) and Genie In A Bottle by Christina Aguilera (#1 in 1999), created by The Freelance Hellraiser in 2001 but wasn't officially released due to copyright issues so didn't chart.

What did chart was a soundalike cover version of the whole thing by a group called Speedway, retitling it just 'Genie In A Bottle' and reaching #10 in 2003. This one probably takes it away from being a 'mashup' though as they slightly change the chords so it's no longer Hard To Explain in the background, just a guitar backing that sounds slightly like it.

Original:
(EDIT: Posted by Colm above!)

Speedway version:

The version performed at the 2002 BRITs, always struck me as a mildly-known mash-up.

Speaking of the BRITs, this #2 smash from 2010:

#1 in 2004, a mash-up of Whitney and U2:

Similar lines as Stroke of Genius, another one that started as a popular mashup and became a chart hit with the 'mashup' element removed.

Rank 1 vs Donna Williams - True Love Never Dies (not Kylie Minogue as some videos claim!). Combines Rank 1's 'Airwave' (#10 in 2000) with Donna Williams 'True Love Never Dies' (never charted):

Later charted as Flip & Fill - True Love Never Dies (#7 in 2002), but with vocals re-recorded by Kelly Llorenna and the instrumental re-written to remove all traces of Airwave. This confused me for years as everyone used to call it an Airwave mashup but I couldn't for the life of me hear it in the song!

Mashups really were huge in the early-mid 2000s, weren't they? It was a few years before my clubbing days but I remember even the music channels would have entire sections of the day dedicated to mashups - I remember a Britney Spears/Bee Gees/Shakira one getting some airplay.

I got this album coming up to a decade ago which has some very interesting mashups on, only a couple of which are well known but all are worth a listen. You can find most of these on Youtube. And for 24p secondhand you can't go wrong really.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mashed-Various-Art...keywords=mashed

Tracklist:

1. Franz Buffalo - Malcolm McLaren vs Franz Ferdinand
2. Boogie Oogie Music - Madonna vs A Taste Of Honey
3. Missing Groovejet - Everything But The Girl vs Spiller
4. Horny As A Dandy (Mousse T's Radio Mix) - Mousse T vs Dandy Warhols
5. David X - David Bowie vs Liberty X
6. Passenger Fever - Peggy Lee vs Iggy Pop
7. Flashing For Money (Sultan Radio Edit) - Deep Dish Vs Dire Straits
8. Can't Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head - Kylie Minogue
9. Hella Good - No Doubt vs The Shapeshifters
10. Doctor Pressure - Mylo vs Miami Sound Machine
11. Proper Education (Radio Edit) - Eric Prydz vs Floyd
12. Rapture Riders (Single Edit) - Blondie v The Doors
13. Notorious Trick - Duran Duran vs Kelis
14. Sing Back Connection - Elastica vs Moloko

Not sure about Proper Education though really, I thought that was a remix/sample of the old Pink Floyd track, I'm not aware it's mashed up with an existing Eric Prydz track.

I absolutely ADORE both Airwave and True Love Never Dies (the Flip & Fill/Kelly Llorenna version).

Another completely unrelated but fun chart fact is that the b-side to the latter, Shooting Star, went on to be released as the follow-up single, and charted higher! I remember thinking 'what are they doing...don't they have anything else to release' when that happened, but they obviously knew what they were doing!

Brock Landars “Smack My Dick Up (S.M.D.U.)” IT's a mash-up of Blur's Song 2 and “Smack My Bitch Up” (though it samples Blur much more)

#49 in 1998.

This thread is going to be unusable very quickly if we keep embedding the videos for every song. It already loads very slowly.

Just commenting to say WHAT at that 'The Ladyboy Is Mine' thing - I had absolutely no idea that existed laugh.gif
