As things stand there’s a long way to go to overtake Band Aid (which is currently on 4,661,000 sales)! That’s 2,028,000 ahead of Mariah. At the current rate, Mariah will be on 4.85m by the end of Christmas 2024. By which time, Band Aid will probably be on around 6m.
I guess it will take until some time in the 2030s for Mariah to overtake. By which point they’d both be in the region of 7m sales (which sounds so ridiculous :’) ) This is of course assuming that their popularity & rate of sales holds up, and that OCC’s streaming ratio remains the same for years to come! |

Ya when we look at it that way its ridiculous. Until a few years ago a million selling single was a huge success, what's a huge success for a single nowadays though?

The million mark being considered special has always been arbitrary, it just so happened that a fairly difficult sales mark to reach was also a nice round number. Not to mention that the million mark has always fluctuated in how difficult it is to achieve (in the mid-00s not even the absolute monster huge hits were able to get there, whereas even before streaming being included on the charts it was starting to become a slightly more routine milestone). How about just comparing the success of songs to other songs released in the same timeframe?

I'm not sure why the BPI hasn't moved the mark for platinum certification up again as streaming has clearly devalued what 600k units represents but hey ho ~ |

I think it is much easier to achieve a platinum selling single now than ever and so many songs reach it but yet do not seem to be songs that are huge hits.

 All I Want for Christmas Is You is back in the UK charts at #60, its 100th week in the Top 100! *.* Its total sales: 2,688,628. It's off to a stronger start with audio streaming this year, compared to the same week in 2019: Fri 13th Nov 2020 - #60 7,221 chart sales (ACR applied) / 14,110 sales 333 downloads 1,242,288 premium audio streaming 314,506 ad-funded audio streaming 454,368 video streaming Fri 15th Nov 2019 - #77 6,162 chart sales (ACR applied) / 11,699 sales 624 downloads 969,389 premium audio streaming 268,486 ad-funded audio streaming 536,961 video streaming It should end this year with total sales exceeding 3 million *.* I hope Official Charts Company have sorted out their apparent problem with her video streaming this year  (Last year on the Friday 27th Dec chart, OCC only had her down as having 714,076 video streams, whereas Wham had 2,249,051 & Pogues 1,244,542 - yet Mariah's views on YouTube UK that week were far greater than Wham or Pogues... #fix x).

Given that the rest of her streaming numbers are up from this time last year while her video streams are down, I have a feeling they're still siphoning off some of her video streams (which iirc only started happening partway through her run last year) oop ~
