The "Call the Shots" performance is incredible! It's never been one of my absolute favourites but hearing it again in that context, it's definitely put it up there for me with Girls Aloud's best

It makes me sad that Girls Aloud didn't get one for Something New and instead favoured Strictly, who are in no way the target audience for that track Damn Kimberley participating that year.

I definitely agree that X Factor would have been more beneficial for Something New. Not enough to overcome Olly of course, but maybe it would have helped the song achieve a better chart run.

On Day 16 we mark the 12th anniversary of 'Sound Of The Underground', Girls Aloud's debut single!
The race for Christmas #1 in 2002 was between Girls Aloud & One True Voice. The newly formed groups battled it out with their respective debut singles 'Sound Of The Underground' and 'Sacred Trust'. Many assumed that the boys would breeze it to #1, after all, boy bands could rely on young female fans. However, Girls Aloud's single was something of a surprise - I don't think the media or the public could have predicted that the girls would have such a modern & fresh sounding uptempo single on their hands - so perhaps they had a strong chance after all? Girls Aloud had a truly genius campaign on their hands - "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" was their slogan, and it clearly proved very effective! 'Sound Of The Underground' was leading the way in the midweeks, and of course it ended up reaching #1. This made Girls Aloud the first ever British girl group to enter straight in at #1 with their debut single. 'Sound Of The Underground' would go on to spend 4 weeks at #1, and was eventually certified platinum. ^ Incredible. All of their performances can be found in Adam's Live Performance Archive thread: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=168834 Here is a notable performance - their "winning" performance on Popstars: The Rivals, directly after finding out that they had topped the charts: What a fantastic single, such a strong debut. After all these years of ballad covers for The X Factor winners, it seems shocking really that Girls Aloud managed to get a song like Sound Of The Underground, which in my opinion still sounds as fresh today as it did 12 years ago. I remember when I first heard it and I was so taken aback - I wasn't sure what I was expecting from them, but it wasn't that. It took another listen to properly "get it", and I just knew that from that moment that they'd be #1. The girls in my class were convinced that One True Voice would get it, who were supposedly "far better" than Girls Aloud. Well, I was rather smug when term started in January. So there we have it, let's celebrate the anniversary of this single. Sorry that this post is so late. |

SOTU's release came before I really knew of them but I'd heard the track on the radio a couple of times, unaware of who was singing it! The slogan was genius, I agree, and the song is SO fresh sounding, especially when you consider that it's a talent show winning track!

Day 18 brings us to the 8 year anniversary (!) of I Think We're Alone Now! The Tiffany cover was included on The Sound of Girls Aloud and was released as the second single from it. It peaked at #4 in the official chart, just one place lower than previous single Something Kinda Ooooh!
Interestingly, the track was recorded just days before the album was sent to be manufactured, and replaced a cover of What a Feeling on the tracklist, and was then revamped to have more of a typical Girls Aloud sound for later copes of the album because the initial version was quite rushed! A standard copy of the GH is very hard to come across and despite having two copies (accidentally lol), I do not have it on either. The deluxe version, however, seemingly did not get reprinted with the new version of ITWAN and the original is present on copies of that! What are your thoughts on ITWAN? (sorry it's so late, Jay was meant to be doing it but has vanished ) |

Oops! Apologies
I remember buying that single during lunchtime break at college, I popped into town and got it in HMV. My friends were distinctly unimpressed by my purchase. |

I'll forgive you
I don't remember when or where I bought CD1! I bought CD2 a couple of months ago though LOL, it was one of the GA CDs I was missing and got it online for less than £2 on eBay (thanks for the link Jay x) Naturally I was obsessed with the track though It's not one of my favourites by them but it says it all when one of their less good singles is still amazing! |

Advent Day 19
See The Day was released 9 years ago today! It would become their 11th Top 10 hit in a row, but their lowest charting single so far, entering and peaking at #9. Feel free to share your memories of this release! x |

CD2's artwork is one of their best.
Nadine's solo radio version is better than the single version. |
