5 days until... a new single?
I am excited for this.
Heard a rumour it is a 're-imagining' of their last ever single, Words Are Not Enough.
Oh god, anything but a rehash of Words Are Not Enough
I think you would like A-Yo by Steps if you gave it half a chance Klaus.
The new single is released on Friday and it's called 'Scared of the Dark'.
Popjustice hyperbole time and they said it's "properly good"... intriguing!
So I'm excited to hear it.
https://www.popjustice.com/articles/lisa-scott-lee-interview-we-said-its-twenty-years-of-steps-what-can-we-do-to-make-it-special/
Popjustice saying something is good usually leads to it being completely dire, so I'm not holding out much hope for this.
Here's the single artwork! Lol at Lee
In both the single and album cover, Lee is like 'I'm just here for some money '
Faye has found the fountain of youth.
Premieres on Radio 2 this morning at 10am!
Omg, it sounds like Alcazar from the clip, specficially Alcastar *.* Amazing!
This is brilliant! That intro, that chorus!! I hadn't quite realised how much I missed pop music like this. Wb Steps
DIED DEAD.
Ooh this is so good in full, it's like a Melodifestivalen finalist from the mid 00s, and I mean that in the best possible way. Alcazar would truly be proud.
The drama *.* The strings *.* Faye kicking off the song *.* The high production values that instantly make Light Up The World seem like a distant basic memory *.*
I can't get over how AMAZING this is. SOTY.
I never knew I wanted or needed new Steps material, and I was dubious about what they'd sound like in 2017... but consider me fully on board.
HUGE gay anthem, somehow perfectly blends sounding more modern with what they were doing before.
I'll tell you something, that chorus is a stunner. The thumping bassline, the incredible melody, Claire's vocal. And holy hell, that key change is life affirming.
Seriously, if this song was a person it's be SEBASTIAN STAN. That's how perfect it is.
Lmao at those promo shots with Lee chanelling Victoria Beckham's Emily Dustrange pose, set away and grimmacing!!
H looks the worst, then Claire. Lisa hasn't changed and Botox Fae is young looking too.
I'm almost in tears at how good this is?! Are they really gonna come back with a bang?? They're certainly trying aren't they!
I know it's nigh-impossible for them to do a Take That kind of resurgence but I think this could turn some heads for sure, I've seen almost universal critical acclaim for it.
Their team needs to focus on the Heart & Radio 2 audience, I hope they don't start trying to chase the 'cool crowd' because they won't take to it.
Hearing Claire's soaring vocals gave me goosebumps, how I've missed them.
I am pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying this that chorus is very strong!
Streaming it now on Spotify, love it! And so do a lot of people, there is plenty of "Buzz" about this track at the moment.
Off to a great start! #60 on iTunes - full set of mixes to come too plus the video
#124 on iTunes Australia.
Surprised wasn't expect a top 200.
ANTHEM.
I hope it gets B-listed at Capital..
Excited for the video. I hope they've got dance steps for the chorus.
Would also love a physical release with the dance steps on the inside like they use to. One can dream.
As if this is a song actually being released in 2017, I feel like I've travelled back and listened to something from Melodifestivalen 2007. But, it's all the better for it and the fact it's not trying to jump on any current trend and doing a shoddy job of it. Pure camp pop that is just... them and really well done at that, not just "half arsed for the comeback".
It's so good to see them back and I wish they had continued to make songs like this in the past 15 years.
I'm loving this more than I imagined.
This is really good. Just as good as their popular stuff during their peak. Hope this does well for them and excited to hear their album!!
#98 on iTunes Australia, actually a little shocked its cracked the top 100 here.
#8 on iTunes! Was not expecting this at all!
Up to #79. I'm loving this so much.
It's making me feel 11yrs old again.
Now #3 in the UK and they will be performing on 'Saturday Night Takeaway' - looks like this could actually be a hit!
Full audio
i think it sounds a lot like 'unbreak my heart'
that chorus is quite fabulous though
And it's #1 on iTunes!!!
I hated Steps so much... but this is incredible.
Why is this so good
I'm exactly the same
well this is INCREDIBLE
This is so f***ing good!!!
Almost feels like this could be the hit many never expected. No1 on iTunes but not doing anything on streaming. I wonder how this will chart?!?
As per usual streaming kills so many tracks i want to become hits. Steps having a iTunes number 1 is a great achievement for them.
To be fair, we haven't had a streaming update yet as it's the first day so we are presuming.
I never expected this to evne go top 20 on itunes tbh So to see it potentially being an actual top 20/30 hit in the charts is a dream come true.
Might make Lee perk up a bit in promo shots
This is going to be a guilty pleasure, it sounds really quite a strong track melodically from the snippet on iTunes - I hope it does well for them.
This is so incredible I could cry, amazing to see it at number 1 on iTunes!
11/10.
I know they are represented by Fascination but I find it amazing a band like Steps have pulled this off considering it seems to be self released on their own label!
No2 on iTunes now but with some promotion hopefully it will hang around!
Seems like it'll be guaranteed at least one play on Capital FM when they play the iTunes Top 10 tomorrow for the Big Top 40 Show. I think I'd lose my shit if they playlisted it.
This is really good. Like, even though it's incredibly camp and should be firmly guilty pleasure territory like their classic stuff was, I genuinely like this song and am not ashamed of it. It's received an incredible reception and it's great to see people who I'd least expect like it too. I'm so excited at the prospect of this being a hit!
I've listened to this 157 times since downloading it oops. It's already the 9th most played song on my phone.
The almost universal praise for this is... heart-warming!
This just came on in the club omg how great is it?!?!?!
Its a good song but i think it just needed something more, i do like it but i wanted something a little faster paced.
Great song. Was a huge Steps fan and have all their albums and their first GH.
Simon Curtis is stanning this on twitter *.*
This is incredible, it deserves to be a huge hit!
It's decent, no idea why everyone's hyping it up so much. Could be a grower, but it's a bit bland.
Did you have it on MUTE when you listened?
Grower maybe, but bland it is not. 'Scared of the Dark' is a CERTIFIED ANTHEM, it is a grower because to my ears it has surpassed the greatness of the first listen.
It's hideous. Glad it's being well-received though, I never like it when bands come back and completely flop!
They are holding well and i would believe it is doing better than anyone ever expected.
Light green followed by dark green update on Kworb Their appearance on 'Lorraine' this morning followed by Claire appearing on 'This Morning' plus the fact they have added additional tour dates is obviously having some impact! Now if only they could get a TV slot to perform it!
Anyone know what their streaming ifugres are like?
They definitely needed big playlist support. As it stands, they'll possibly be top 10 on sales all week, after spending a whole day at number 1, and still only barely scrape top 40.
Number 11 in the first set of midweeks.
It is doing well, all things considered. I wonder is they used physical CD like Take That would it have sold?
Video being filmed today with a new dance routine
The video being filmed today means it won't be out for a while surely. Either way I can't see them being an act to benefit much from a video effect.
The video's out on the 7th April.
I'd imagine they'll use that to coincide with the first performances to push promo for the album release on the 21st.
They need to get thi onto a prominent playlist or radio station, why the hec not?
This had the potential to do better but the promo has been crap. Why appear on several TV shows and not even perform? To the casual viewer of Saturday Night Takeaway they'll just assume it's a nostalgic reunion rather than new material.
Then there's radio, I've heard it twice on radio, once was the premier on Radio 2 and the other was the UK Hot Top 40. Radio seems to be completely ignoring this. http://comparemyradio.com/tracks/Steps/Scared_Of_The_Dark
I'd imagine they're hoping for better album sales so will probably push it more then. However the single will be a lost cause by then no doubt. They should have been the music guests performing this on Saturday night takeaway and on this morning. Every little helps. They'll be making their money from the tour which is selling well.
I suspect no-one involved in the single would have ever thought it would get to #1 on iTunes so good promo for the single was just never planned and it was just too late to make alterations like them singing the single on SNT. I hope the video will gain attention what with a new dance routine being promised.
They're performing on This Morning closer to the album release I think. OA/OS releases are tricky for acts like Steps to handle effectively when also trying to manage a successful album release. They're very unlikely to get much airplay and so the peak is likely going to be in the first week. However, if they focus all the promotion for then, it leaves nothing for the album release which means that will be unsuccessful.
As Liam said, I'm sure no one expected it to go to #1 on iTunes, especially against Ed Sheeran but they probably should have booked at least one performance slot. Although, again I guess they couldn't when they didn't know the dance routine yet. They have been good on the promo front elsewhere though, helping to sell the tour which I guess is also the main focus at this point.
The single will go top 40 which is probably an outcome they will be happy with. I do understand they are putting the main promo into the album. Its good they are doing promo though as its a good reminder to people they are back which is selling the tour for them and hopefully the album. The fact the ultimate collection is back in the charts is showing signs they are gaining interest for the public and also that the single even got to number 1 on itunes is all very positive.
The video will likely gain interest as people who remember Steps will want to see it just for the dance moves alone which was a huge part of Steps in their heyday.
Number 27 a further 9 place decline in today's mid week update.
A shame, but quite inevitable. Tbh though, this time last week I was doubting their ability to even make the Top 100, so I'll still be pleased if it ends up making the Top 40 (presumably it'll make it)! #1 on iTunes was just a bit of a tease. They've still done excellently!
Really looking forward to the video!
Playlisted by Radio 2!
A listed by Radio 2 (Although I'd take B list at Capital over it! )
Added to the 'A List' playlist on Apple and 'The Pop List' on Spotify
The decline has slowed down, in the mid week chart they are number 30 today. Top 40 officially, looks very safe for them tomorrow.
Interviewed on Radio 2 and are also the R2 song of the week.
Lisa has returned to Dubai but said TV promo would happen in April.
Welcome back to the Top 40, Steps made it in at number 37 this week.
Fantastic to see them top 40 again, shame it couldn't have been a little bit higher with its iTunes performance but I'll take it.
With a physical release, this could have done even better!
Aw I'm chuffed for them that they got a play on Radio 1 too. Greg was super nice about them!
Scared of the Dark drops to number 80 in the mid week chart provided today.
Pleased to SOTD still holding up in the Top 50 on iTunes - so many missed opportunities with this single (TV promo, physical versions etc.,). I guess the success of this really caught the band and management off guard and they were expecting a 'Light Up The World' kind of reaction.
The Ed Sheeran and now Drake inlux on the chart would have puished Steps out a lot, this considered i think they have done well. I fully agree the success of this really caught the band and management off guard and they were expecting a 'Light Up The World' kind of reaction.
The Remix EP is released next week - the '7th Heaven' remix of the track is quite possibly the most fabulously camp thing I have ever heard!
I don't mind the 7th heaven club mix but it's not as good as sleaze sister mixed of better shade of blue and it's the way you make me feel. I still think it's a shame they haven't issued a physical CD single which would really have boosted their sales.
Every time I see this topic bumped, I keep thinking the video has been released.
I had thought based on early mid week placings and a few days of climbing on iTunes was enough for Steps to achieve a second week in the top 100,unfortunately this hasn't happened. That said, the influx of all the Drake songs available this week is the likely reason they are outside the top 100.
Promo must be coming soon as Lisa is flying back to the U.K. today.
I think with the remix EP being released on Friday that we will get the video at the same time and possibly some TV promo?
They said the video is being released on 7th April. They have a gig on the 8th don't they, so they'll be getting together to rehearse for that.
They are performing on Mrs Brown's show shortly
Tweet from H -
All promo is good and will help build interest in the album.
So this got dull very quickly for me. Meh.
Was expecting the remix EP to have been released on Friday but it doesn't seem to have appeared. Ready for the video and mixes now tbh.
SOTD is still holding up pretty well on iTunes and is currently #69.
^^Ignore that comment! The remix EP is out and is currently #27 on the album charts
First (very short) preview of the video:
QUEEN FAYE dominating as per *.*
Scared of the dark is number 80 at the moment on itunes, the release of remixes is helping it,the drake and ed sheeran domination is really pushing them down.
Im loving this right now, its get better and better every time i hear it and really keep in line with the original style of music but yet fits in with a new sound. I am really excited for the album.
Scared of the Dark remains in the iTunes mid 80's.
A Saturday Night Take Away or a performance on the Voice Final would have been wonderful for them to promote but they likely wont get big promotion like that.
They have 'All Round to Mrs Browns' in a few weeks and that gets around 5.5 million viewers.
Very slight improvement on iTunes, its is at number 76 now. Is or has it, done anything on streaming?
Exclusive first look on This Morning at 10:30!
*.* loved that video. They all look amazing (especially H, hello DADDY)
The dancing was maybe a bit repetitive, would have been nice to see a change for the ending, but it was still visually impressive.
Lisa channeling her inner Tina Barrett with the FYAAA
THE :3 SECONDS OF SHIRTLESS LEE. Yas Daddy.
Wow, I love it. Even Lisa is looking well.
I'm already learning the dance routine. The song gets played every weekend in my town so I need to have it nailed for tomorrow night.
Can't get over how good they look in the group shots. The black and gold outfits are sublime.
OMG DEAD
C'MON DANCE ROUTINE!!! <3
Please, please, please, please, please...
Make a Top 40 impact!
Not the most exciting of videos, but I just wanted a clunky dance routine and I got it.
:')
Faye looking as gorgeous and as magnificent as ever though!
Lisa looks like the awkward mum on the school run trying to out-glam the others. Bless her, forever hapless.
It's looks like it cost about £3 to make but I love it! Glad to see it's had some impact on iTunes (Currently #44 and #531).
Ready for some serious TV promo now!
I like the video and it's helping the song get more exposure but it should have been out much sooner.
I like the video,I have to say Claire looks amazing I really hope for her sake she can keep the weight off this time, faye hasn't hardly aged at all,in loving the song right now and deserves to be a much bigger hit, back in the day this would have been big for them.
The video matches the song, I don’t think the video screams cheap at all. I agree about Claire, she looks very well and she looks healthy, it is the best she has looked in years.
Amazing this is still Top 50 on iTunes - such a missed opportunity though, TV promo and physicals could have made this a 'proper' hit.
#71 on today's mids - I know streaming data is sometimes missing in the first update but hopefully it manages to return to the Top 100 this week
I can't stop laughing at Lisa in that video, it's like she's discovered she has arms for the first time.
tbh
Acoustic version of SOTD now available too plus the Wideboys remix from the album
SOTD now 59p on iTunes and the acoustic version is also charting at #116.
Performing this live tomorrow on Live at the Palladium. 8pm
The promotion channels for the album should soon be coming to light so we might see the single pick up some extra sales on the back of it.
They should get a decent boost from their Palladium performance tonight especially as it's the first time they have performed the song on TV
[37-147-out-139...] is its official Top 200 chart run so far. It deserves so much more obviously. Nice that it's re-entered though.
A M A Z I N G
Why do they even give H and Lee microphones tbh
That's got me excited for seeing them in November.
Lisa tonally reminded me of how I sound when I attempt karaoke.
I love how queen Lisa totally snatched the mic for her solo and strutted down the stairs before they had even finished the chorus
I'm obsessed with last night's performance
In terms of star quality we have :
- The blonde girl with short hair (phenomenal)
- The blonde girl with long hair
...
- The brunette guy who's HOT
- The brunette girl
...
- The blonde guy who does look quite tacky
Really hope SOTD gets a decent chart boost - its #11 on iTunes, there is further promo and they will pick up streams for the song from the album
Scared...is back in the top 10 on iTunes now. Hopefully it can hold on and then get another boost from Mrs Brown's show tomorrow night.
Lol at the backing track being turned up for Lisa's verse!
Lisa is the Jan of Steps, isn't she? Bless.
Wonderful it has bounced back as high as number 44. I would be delighted if it could stay top 100 this coming.
Scared of the Dark is risng again, number 100 on itunes. In paid for sales it has done ok, streaming killed it
Added to the Halloween party playlist. Hopefully it will give the song some extra spins!
It's very low down the list but hopefully picks up a few streams if people are shuffling the playlist and it comes on. Could reach silver just a little bit more quickly!
I hope so too! All the little bits help, especially in their case as they are not a streaming force at all. Hopefully it’ll reach silver next year.
Ya it's so hard for them so the few sales here and there are a big help.
Everyone stans Lee
And Faye
