Love this medley of the 4 great singles from rhythm of love, kylie gave a great energetic performance in this medley and was brill vocally.

Posted by: Dannyboy May 7 2020, 03:56 PM

Great album and a perfect example of the best songs being released as the singles, the rest of the songs haven’t dated very well

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 7 2020, 05:45 PM

They really got the singles right but sometimes I think things can only get better would have made a good single aswell. I hate the sales dive for rhythm of love from her first 2 albums, if it went double platinum it wouldnt have been to bad but it was down around 75% on enjoy yourself and that was on the back of 4 very popular singles.

Posted by: Liam.k. May 7 2020, 05:56 PM

The drop in sales performance in just a year was quite staggering, probably more so than the drop from this to Let's Get To It. I find it hard to believe that it was just the change of image and sound that accounted for it. A #9 debut following two million selling #1s is... terrible.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 7 2020, 06:07 PM

You would expect at least a top 5 debut for an album following 2 million sellers and a successful number 2 lead single. It never fully adds up for me.

Posted by: Liam.k. May 7 2020, 06:11 PM

It wasn't even a competitive week - just two entries above it. A shame there doesn't seem to be any estimates for its first week sales to see if they tell a slightly more promising story.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 7 2020, 06:12 PM

What did it sell on its first week?

Posted by: ___∆___ May 7 2020, 06:13 PM

ROL was the album that made me ‘wobble’ a bit in terms of my loyalty to Kylie! It seemed so different at the time to her first two albums and also I was growing up and growing out of the Kylie mania phase.

Looking back on it now this album is such an outright pop album but it didn’t feel like it at the time - also its home to all the bops (BTDYK, SBIT etc.,)

We don't know! tongue.gif The only sale available is for the #1 which was 94k. Obviously it was a November release so sales would have been higher in the Top 10 than other times of year, but I imagine it still sold over half of what Enjoy Yourself debuted with (short of 100k).

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 7 2020, 06:27 PM

I'd say SAW were banking on far bigger sales,I think its an album they spent more money on than usual.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 7 2020, 07:26 PM

Im glad pete waterman is very proud of this album and named so many songs from it, like the part about what do i have to do and simon cowell who back then was really an unknown, complete roll reversal for simon and pete now.

My 'Rhythm of Love' review, enjoy =

Better The Devil You Know
An album can often be judged by the first track and this is no exception with this magnificent song that kick started a the 90's with a new sound, even from the very first few seconds you can tell its something very different, while still being very much pop, but it crosses so effortlessly over to a hip dance tune with a marked change in Kylie’s vocal strength as she crests over each of the choruses, radiant, exhilarating breath of fresh air. Even to this day its rightly become an anthem for her and still sounds timeless, and definitely ranks as one of if not the BEST thing she's ever done.

Step Back In Time
A thumping 90's dance track, with some added guitars and a dose of 70's music references, and what do you get? This glorious offering, a joyous Disco track with some fantastic production, which makes this the perfect follow up single and there's no denying that it was a compelling proposition - and that mixing old with new created another timeless classic.

What Do I Have To Do
Things just keep getting better with track 3 that winds itself up and explodes into yet another pop classic, definitely one of Kylie's more dance oriented singles with sultry vocals in each verse, before she dominates the chorus with some great energy. Its fast paced and never lets up from its first note to the third chorus fade. While this was remixed for its single release which amped things up and gave this song an entirely new energy, the original album version is still great and makes for yet another standout moment.

Secrets
After three banging dance anthems, the tone is taken down slightly with this track that wouldn't sound out of place on 'EY'. A nice groove with a catchy melody and while its not as strong as the previous tracks so far, its still a very well structured pop song.

Always Find The Time
Back on the Dance/Pop side of things with this great little number, that again features some great vocals from Kylie, she seems very at ease and relaxed throughout the infectious dance beat. Another decent album track that really keeps the momentum going strong.

The World Still Turns
Slowing things down now with this tender heartfelt pop ballad with a very grown up sound, with some strong vocals by Kylie where she really injects some life into this track and even the cheesy sax solo in the middle section really adds some flavour to the song (even if it dates it ever so slightly).

Shocked
Kylie's progression continues here with single #4, and its not hard to see why this era is loved by so many. Harder edged than anything she's done before with the long intro into the vocal builds and builds until eventually electric guitars elevate it to a new plain. And that’s how it stays for its near five-minute length. When Kylie starts to sing, the song just gets better and yes this was again remixed for its single release, but both versions are excellent and completed an excellent run of singles (probably the best of her career).

One Boy Girl
This is where Kylie veered into the New Jack Swing sound, and while it was nice to see Kylie experimenting with new sounds, this however wasn't executed very well, while her rapping was quite credible, the song on the whole is banal and not very memorable or catchy. Definitely the weakest moment on here.

Things Can Only Get Better
Thankfully picking the things up is this dance anthem with some fantastic electric guitars sprayed all over the song, along with some fun lyrics about life and growing up, and there is something just very uplifting about this song, very pivotal to Kylie's evolution, and along with a good melody and the techno beat really adds flavour to the song, all of which makes for yet another album highlight and if there was gonna be a 5th single, then this would have been very fitting.

Count The Days
An okay song that favours the more synth pop groove over the techno/dance beats that runs throughout the rest of the album, which makes this one of the more dated numbers on here and doesn't quite have strong enough hooks, but Kylie does give some good energy throughout and the production is decent enough.

Rhythm of Love
The last track on the album with another great slice of funky 90's pop and more sax over the middle eight, together with more self-assured vocals from Kylie, and therefore ending this fantastic album on an almighty high note.

Things Can Only Get Better and Always Find The Time backed with the 4 singles make the album a very easy and uplifting listen.
Creativity from both Kylie and SAW was really at the core with Rhythm of Love.

I bet it sent shockwaves through PWL at the time that their biggest artist who had decided on a ‘risky’ new image (Laughable when you look back at it now laugh.gif ) only entered at #9.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 10 2020, 01:50 PM

Kykie pushed for something different as her own opinions were coming to the front and part of SAW had to have been like we know better than you and going by sales we were right. It all worked out for the best long term and id say SAW made alot of money from kylie. I do like how fondly Pete Waterman speaks of kylie, I've never heard him have anything but nice things to say about her.

Posted by: pippa May 10 2020, 09:02 PM

Pete Waterman and Kylie appear to have a great mutual respect for each other.
Each had a pivitol role in each others careers.
Relationships of this nature and length are rare in the industry and it is was repeated with Kylie and Terry Blamey.
As Kylie started showing she wanted control of her career on the path leading into Rhythm of Love, it would be interesting to see more interviews between all sides on how they came to a mutual decision.

More pete love from Kylie.

Posted by: pippa May 11 2020, 05:42 PM

He would have earned some royalties from the Anti Tour with numerous PWL tracks making the show.

What a great album! She really brought the pumping vibes with this one. The four singles are great and then there are many other hidden gems too. 'Things Can Only Get Better' jumped out as a real favourite! There's a definite growth in confidence and might with Kylie in this album compared to the first 2 albums I feel.

Album ranking
01. Rhythm of Love

Things Can Only Get Better and Always Find The Time are along with the singles, the highlights from Rhythm of Love.

I prefer things can only get better to shocked.

A Fan-Made cover for 'Things Can Only Get Better':

Not a great kylie picture but everything else tie in with the album cover.

I prefer the fan made artwork ahead if the shocked artwork.

Can't get 'Secrets' out of my head too. music.gif what a fun album!

That and especially 'Things Can Only Get Better' have shot up my album rankings with more listens.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Jul 8 2020, 01:52 PM

Both are great songs, i prefer things can only get better but secrets is a great track aswell. Kylie and saw were really on a roll with most of the tracks on the album.

They were on a roll with Kylie's first 3 albums and they got derailed with Let's Get To It.

Ya let's get to it was and is a disappointment after such a great run of albums. They really didnt know what they were aiming for with let's get to it where with rol they really knew the direction and sound they were going with.

Posted by: pippa Jul 11 2020, 10:05 AM

Let's Get To It in many ways signified the time was right to separate.

What a beautiful way to celebrate a great Kylie album on its 30th birthday by achieving a record breaking Number 1.

My ranking of 'Rhythm of Love':

30 years old, that does not feel it was that long ago, remains one of favourite kylie albums of her career.

01 What Do I Have To Do
02 Better The Devil You Know
03 Always Find The Time
04 Step Back In Time
05 Things Can Only Get Better
06 Shocked
07 Secrets
08 One Boy Girl
09 The World Still Turns
10 Rhythm of Love
11 Count The Days

Rhythm of Love is probably her weakest title track song for me, as her other such as enjoy yourself, fever etc are brilliant.

'Shocked' is an iconic single cover, that's just a plain Kylie image in comparison.

Rhythm of Love is one of Kylies best albums, period. The huge sales drop from albums 1 & 2 is easy to explain from someone who lived through it. I was 11 years old at the time of release and among kids my age (her demographic at the time) she became so uncool and the majority of her fan base would have been around that age at the time and a little older so teenagers mostly. Anyone who was a fan was crucified at school and it became very embarrassing to admit to being a fan. She absolutely did the right thing changing her sound though,I believe it’s what saved her career, if she’d released another Enjoy Yourself she wouldn’t be here now.

I do agree with this and as a fan old enough it was something I experienced and you nearly only told your very very close friends you were a fan.

I think it could also have been partly waiting so long to release the second single (Step Back in Time) which wasn't exactly massive. I i actually only recently realised that it was released after SBIT, I assumed it was released off the back of 'Better The Devil'. Do you think the album might have performed better if it was? I mean, that single was pretty huge and she still seemed to have a tiny bit of goodwill towards her at that point.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Nov 24 2021, 02:32 PM

For me when devil was released my memories were people who wouldn't have previously liked Kylie were really liking the song so my thinking at the time was Kylie was getting more popular, as an adult i know that opinion was based on a very small amount of people but my teenage brain processed it so differently to what it was. I also remember when step back in time was released people were saying Kylie Minogue says "fcuk" in her new single they were of course referring to the " i wana funk" part of the song but again people were talking about Kylie.

Happy 32nd (!!) to the release of ‘Shocked’

UK Charts: 10-6-9-18-23-38-55.

13th Top 10 hit and blocked Dannii’s single ‘Success’ from climbing to #10

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 21 2023, 03:24 AM

It was a unique chart moment having kylie and dannii at 10 and 11 it would have been nice if both were top 10 but shocked was easily more deserving.

Posted by: vibe May 21 2023, 06:16 AM

Three weeks at 11 for $ucce$$ was frustrating! Still it outsold JTTB which peaked at number 8

Bruce Forest (produced of UK version) recently posted to Dannii that he loves their version of SYTWTG , he considers it one of his faves!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever May 21 2023, 10:51 AM

I never liked success and still don't but 3 weeks number 3 is frustrating chartwise.SHocked on the other hand I still like, it's ny least fave ROL single but it's still good.
