Hi all! This thread is the thread for covering Cycling at the Olympics this year. This includes the following: BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Mountain Biking, Road and Track. Feel free to discuss all the ins and outs of the disciplines, any predictions you may have, support for the athletes and anything else you notice as we kick off on Saturday!
Didn't realise the Road race was on so early, lucky I switched it on! Pogacar is, unsurprisingly, in the lead
Wout Van Aert has caught up with the main group now - if he can stay with them the win is almost certainly his.
McNulty and Carapaz appear to have made a definitive break - which means I've suddenly become a member of the Richard Carapaz fanclub!
Carapaz wins gold in the men's road race, Ecuador's second ever Olympic gold.
Very happy for Carapaz - as much as I don't really support him as an INEOS rider it was good to see him riding for his country and getting them a rare Olympic gold.
Pogacar and Van Aert sprinted for silver, at which point I turned the telly off so not sure who got it!
Wout van Aert of Belgium has been confirmed as the silver medal winner. Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia has won bronze.
Women's road race is tomorrow - very interested to see if it ends up being a Dutch sweep of the podium, they certainly have the talent to be able to pull it off.
Austria's Anna Kiesenhofer launched a remarkable solo breakaway to win road race gold on her Olympic debut, as Britain's Lizzie Deignan finished 11th.
the men's race was excellent
Carapaz and Pogacar did very well
The womens race was incredible - one of the biggest upsets I think I've ever seen! The lack of race radios really must have played a part though, we were all watching thinking they knew she was too far ahead but in actual fact they all thought they were fighting it out for gold Delighted for Kiesenhofer though, managing to out-fox such a strong Dutch team isn't something that happens every day.
Fantastic to see Tom Pidcock winning Gold in the mountain biking! Two golds for Leodensians already *.*
Men's and Women's Time Trials start tomorrow - it'll take a lot to stop Filippo Ganna from taking gold I think! And if Chloe Dygert is still as good as she was a couple of years back she should probably take the women's.
Spent all afternoon watching the Men's Time Trial - such a gripping finale! Roglic blasted it out the park though and a massive well done to him after some disappointing recent results. Second to fifth were all so close though, very happy for Dumoulin taking the silver after taking some time away from the sport to recover mentally.
A GOLD in the BMX! Didn't see that coming! Bethany Shriever taking the gold in the women's and Kai White taking silver in the men's as well, really is the story of the day.
Well done to both of them. That's an exciting unpredictable sport to watch.
Beth Shriever's from my home town of Leytonstone too Legends only
Wow, GB have never won a medal in the BMX events before (it's only been in the programme since 2008 but still) so to go from that to nearly getting both gold medals is quite an incredible turnaround - also read that Shriever had to rely on crowdfunding to even get into the Olympics so what an achievement for her!
A gold medal in the BMX freestyle for Charlotte Worthington. I set my box to record the swimming finals but that was taking place at the same time so I got the bonus of seeing that as well this morning as if it was live.
Charlotte Worthington's high-scoring BMX routine was an incredible watch, that 360 backflip *.* great for her to pull it back with such a high after the previous run went wrong.
That gold for Charlotte Worthington was incredible, the American woman looked in a league of her own after the first run so to see Charlotte better that was fab. Of course the bronze for Declan Brooks was well-earned as well.
A little late but Charlotte Worthington's BMX gold has probably been my highlight of these Olympics - a fantastic performance to watch and an upset win after a false start!
GB getting 2 silver medals in team track cycling events today, including one each for both Jason and Laura Kenny, the former matching the all-time record for medals by British Olympians and he has the opportunity to take the record outright with 2 upcoming individual events. Unfortunately not so great news from the men's team sprint where a crash resulted in GB's elimination after winning it at the past few Olympics.
Good to see the two silvers in the track cycling today! A massive shame about the men's Team Pursuit though, fair enough Denmark were going to win by a mile but the crash practically ended any potential of the British guys trying to get a time worthy of the bronze. I think they should at least have been given the chance to ride by themselves again to post a time.
More cycling gold for Team GB with Matt Walls in the Omnium! Spent all afternoon watching the track cycling, he led from the front all the way and finished well in all four races so well deserved.
Also oh dear at the Katy Marchant crash in the Keirin, a real shame as it wasn't her fault at all.
Some more medals for the British cycling with a gold in the Women's Madison and bronze in the Team Sprint! Laura Kenny is now the joint most-decorated female British olympian of all time
That was a really dominant performance in the womens' Madison with the rest of the field trailing so far behind. I can't remember seeing a GB gold medal won so convincingly.
Well done to Jason Kenny now having more gold medals than any other British Olympian. He really took advantage of that gap that opened up for him after the derny bike pulled over.
A fabulous result for cycling all round! As a cycling fan I've been really happy to see so much success for Team GB, here's hoping it might increase interest for the sport nationally! (particularly on Buzzjack )
Mixed results for both of the Kennys across their various events but happy that both of them managed to take home another gold medal each - Charlotte Dujardin's reign as the sole most decorated female British Olympian not lasting very long!
