New single, apparently the song is about Simone. sad.gif

Posted by: ROBOT Nov 5 2014, 06:35 PM

Sounds VERY GOOD, I was waiting for a big chorus but I feel like that was probably still to come - very promising though, delighted they're carrying on and lovely that it's a song they can dedicate to Simone whilst still retaining their sound.

Posted by: Simon. Nov 5 2014, 06:36 PM

So eager to hear this, they are the most promising girl group in a long time imo, sod Stooshe, Neon Jungle & Little Mix all the basic groups there.

Posted by: mr_aly Nov 5 2014, 06:39 PM

That sounds like it could have real potential, it's a nice sentiment that they've made a tribute to Simone in a way that doesn't seem tacky or contrived either.

Posted by: ░░░░ Nov 10 2014, 08:09 AM

it sounds absolutely stunning, real poignancy to lyrics and tone and the context of its writing will only serve to make it a bigger and more powerful song.

Posted by: ░░░░ Nov 10 2014, 10:05 AM

i am actually bowled over by that clip, such an intense emotion unlike anything i've felt listening to a pop song before

if the rest of the song lives up to the promise of the clip then it could be absolutely huge for them

Completely agree; I wonder if they're recording a completely different solo album now or keeping tracks from when they recorded with Simone.

Posted by: jark Nov 10 2014, 10:38 AM

Not sure what to make of the clip yet. It sounds a touch SHOUTY

Which bits?

Obviously it's impossible but didn't anyone else get Simone vibes when Emmalyn was singing the "just holler I'll be there" parts?

some things never change

the fact the clip was played it off an ipad on a tv show would explain the poor sound quality

It is, so glad they are releasing a track in her memory. I just hope they don't usher in a fifth member. It's still so early in their career but you can tell the girls were all so close and good friends, it wouldn't feel right.

It depends whether they're recording a whole new album or not sad.gif

Posted by: Davidson Nov 10 2014, 06:28 PM

Sounds wonderful and the lyrics are so touching given how alone Simone must have felt. Can't wait to hear it in full.

Posted by: Jack Nov 10 2014, 08:38 PM

I really think this could potentially be the single to make them into superstars, especially seeing as Ugly Heart is still doing so well and created a lot of hype for them. I would be saying this if Simone had passed or not as well I think.

Posted by: -Jay- Nov 10 2014, 10:58 PM

I really can't wait to hear the full song! Very poignant lyrics. So far it sounds like the perfect song to release following such a tragic event. sad.gif

Posted by: Noahspike Nov 10 2014, 11:16 PM

God, it must be so hard for them/the label to decide where to go from here. I'm sure they are still grieving and want to show sensitivity to all parties - Simone's memory, her family, the fans, each other - but they must also be acutely aware of the momentum they have at the moment and the fact there's a huge amount of goodwill out there towards them, not to mention the likelihood that Simone herself would have wanted them to be as big as possible. That snippet sounds promising though and it seems they've managed to clearly acknowledge her passing with their next release without defining themselves by it.

There is an exclusive interview in The Sun today with the girls, and you can read it on http://trendio.us/2015/01/14/girls-g-r-l-break-silence-passing-simone-battle/. It made me emotional reading it.

The article also confirms we'll be getting the music video for Lighthouse today which will be in memory of Simone. I so want these girls to do well, all five of them deserve it so much.

Posted by: Rob S Jan 15 2015, 11:20 AM

Absolutely beautiful, really strikes a chord just feeling how much the girls have been through the last few months. Going by the lyrics etc.

Posted by: HausofKubrick Jan 15 2015, 11:31 AM

So overwhelming, the video and song.

I don't even think it matters how well the song does, just getting it out there is enough. A very important song for them and it shows in the lyrics/vocals :'( shivers.

I watched this and started crying towards the end, I have to admit. The short-haired girl seemed to be overcome with emotion at the very end as well, and that's what struck a chord with me, as they all seemed to be emotional when they were huddled together.

Great song and video.

So very well made and not in a corny/cliched way (which shouldn't matter when it's in tribute to someone, but it's just so much nicer done this way). Very impressed.

Posted by: mr_aly Jan 15 2015, 05:45 PM

The ending of that video is actually heart wrenching. It's no easy task to create a sincere tribute immediately after an event like that but it's both tasteful and touching.

Posted by: Hurricane Jan 15 2015, 08:34 PM

They have really made everything right with this release, haven't they? wub.gif

The artwork isn't too dark/sad, but at the same it's not too fun or bright like they usually are with them.
The song doesn't sound like a 100% direct go at Simone, so it doesn't feel like they are using her death to cash in, but then the lyrics can easily be associated with the recent events.
And the video is incredibly heart wrenching, but in a very good way, and it feels like such a pretty and respectful tribute to Simone and who she was.

She LOOKED so happy. Seriously, I would have never figured it out. Depression is such a scary disease and it's way too overlooked.

Emmalyn's voice is giving me life. Her pre-chorus makes me wanna burst out singing. cheer.gif

This is exactly why it works for me, it's a really personal song but it's also one that most people could still relate to easily wub.gif

And yes indeed sad.gif It shocks and scares so much more than depression already does when someone who looks and seems as happy as Simone can be in such a state of despair, but that's the nature of it sadly sad.gif

Not sure I can add anything that hasn't already been said! Everything about this is a triumph - the song, message, video, tribute, the whole 'feel' of it. They got it all completely spot on and it's the perfect nod to Simone while allowing them move on as a four-piece. The song itself is a stunner and I'd love to see it do really well for them.

Posted by: Wall-e Jan 15 2015, 11:37 PM

Underwhelming start worldwide tbh.

I really think this could be the best pop song of the last few years.

Everything about it is so perfect. So full of emotion and sincerity whilst being so melodic and just being so anthemic. As for that video, just incredible.

This made me really sad. Their whole situation has been truly heartbreaking.

Unfortunately I don't think this'll do much in the US. "Ugly Heart" merely "bubbled under" here, and I think this is too attached to its context to be their truly introductory US single. Not to mention the added hurdle of girl groups not being very fashionable here since their late-'90s/early-'00s heyday (or arguably the Pussycat Dolls).

That said, I hope it happens for them at some point, though as someone said earlier, success is secondary to them healing as a group.

The song for me was a grower (despite the brilliant message attached to the song!), so perhaps it could be the same for the public out there who isn't fully behind the song just yet? It's not as instant as "Ugly Heart" imo but then again, that hasn't aged well and I can see "Lighthouse" doing the opposite!

My comment wasn't intentional. Perhaps I should rephrase it but what I meant was quite clear that the song now bores me due to the overplaying of it.

i was making an off the cuff remark. i'm sure simone wouldn't have taken offence at either, though she might have at you overplaying her tribute in a week!

Disappointed this hasn't taken off quicker worldwide

I wouldn't worry about this personally. We're internet fans stanning over a release we anticipated, 98% of the UK probably still don't even know 'Lighthouse' exists yet and there's probably a huge proportion who don't know or care who G.R.L are even if they know of Ugly Heart. They're not yet in a position where they can do well on name alone, even with the Simone thing behind thing, sure, it's tragic but they weren't big enough for it to actually made a HUGE impact on the majority of the public.

Give it time, it's a bit naive to expect a song from a still pretty low key girlband to 'take off' when nothing of theirs has really taken off anywhere apart from Australia before... but I believe it will. I have FAITH.

Posted by: ░░░░ Jan 26 2015, 04:04 AM

it's such a unique kind of song. as internet fans it is incredibly hard to detach from emotion of simone's passing and it makes the song more powerful. how good of a song is it without the knowledge of what it is about. will people like it when talking to jenny from human resources of a wednesday. will radio 1 dare playlist them.

Posted by: Conderella Jan 26 2015, 07:54 AM

I love how they didn't really show tears or anything like that in the video (apart from the last scene where we don't really see tears anyway). The song is sad itself but the video makes it more powerful and focuses on positives rather than wallows in sorrow. Really great tribute.

I love the video. I Love the concept. But I just LIKE the song. I can't see it being something that would stand out on the radio the way 'Ugly Heart' did.

I didn't realise it was out so soon here. 2 weeks and it's only #1267 on iTunes. It would have been picked up on radio by now. So sadly, it doesn't look like this is going to much, if anything.

i realised today that a single song has never made me cry on so many different occasions. i've lost count now. from when the crackly clip leaked early last year. the fragility the honesty and being a sufferer of depression myself on occasion it makes me feel tnat little bit better and all the while celebrating what was clearly a beautiful talent. i imagine it will also speak and help many many younger people out there feeling stuck or trapped and then ultimately simone's death has brought some good for the future.

'ugly heart' swept by me last year which is a little annoying but i've been able to enjoy it to its fullest at the same time as 'lighthouse'. both are totally and utterly f***ing incredible. 'ugly heart' unlike any pop song i've heard, huge and perfect for simone's last vocal and then 'lighthouse' well i've explained that enough. both should go down in the pop music canon and quite rightly.

Fantastic post there Jake, both tracks really are so brilliant in different ways. Ugly Heart is a storming pop track, something the chart seems to be totally lacking these days, and Lighthouse is stunning in every single way. So excited for the future of G.R.L. and an album in the not too distant future hopefully heart.gif

Posted by: (Zach) Feb 8 2015, 06:46 PM

So weird. I figured after the success of Ugly Heart and with how well Lighthouse has started out in other countries that people/radio would be jumping on this.

Posted by: jark Feb 9 2015, 12:15 AM

But the song just isn't strong enough. Ugly Heart caught on because it was so melodic and poppy. This just comes and goes.

Posted by: Scherz Feb 9 2015, 12:18 AM

I thought the tribute to Simone and the lyrics to the track had meaning and was lovely but I wasn't hearing this 'big smash' that people were predicting.
I'm not surprised that it's not doing much anywhere, the chorus lets it down. The verses and the bridge build and the chorus sinks it.

Shame because I don't want this to end them. They just need more Ugly Heart goodness.

Posted by: Liаm Feb 9 2015, 12:30 AM

I'm kinda... not over this per se but I'm not fully loving as much as I did at first. Ugly Heart is certainly better. I was caught up in the emotion of it being about Simone, the hype etc. and just the fact they finally released something else after the tragedy (I thought they might just end the band) but there has been so many songs I've loved already this year and whilst I really enjoy this it isn't something I'm stanning or properly loving.

I can't see this being as big as Ugly Heart because that was a relatable, catchy song whereas I agree that in general the public won't connect with this like most of us are because they probably won't be aware of the story behind it.

Posted by: Joey XCX. Feb 9 2015, 09:26 AM

Glad people are finally saying it. I love the video/sentiment, but the song on its own just isn't very memorable. I've tried getting into it and it's just not happening.

Posted by: (Zach) Feb 12 2015, 02:48 AM

I never liked the song for the sentimental element. I don't really stan for them like that. I just think it's a damn good song.

Posted by: Wall-e Feb 14 2015, 06:59 AM

Think this could actually miss the top 40 in the UK now.

It's not really performing that well on pre-orders. I know it still has three weeks before release but with it not being in the top 1,500 I heavily doubt that Capital and Radio 1 will support 'Lighthouse' so late what is such a great shame as it could be difficult for them to rebound and get airplay support.

i am generally not one for opening up about my feelings on buzzjack. in 9 years of posting i have never felt compelled to do so for a multitude of reasons. i have suffered with severe depression periodically since i was 14. i had no friends through seconary school and was severely bullied. leaving school i lost weight, blossomed and changed my mindset as much as i could but i was forever crippled with self-doubt and insecurity, i have gradually managed to get rid of this but sadly the bouts of depression have gotten worse and last winter i went through my most severe bout to date. i cannot begin to articulate the place i was at during the latter stages of last year. i felt alien, lost and so so deeply lacking any thought in myself and thought the world hated me and i lashed out several times without a grip on the situation.

i remember one particular day being at queens park station following a night out and crashing at my friends. i awoke in such a terrible place and went to get the tube from queen's park to bakers street where i got off to change and i remember being stood on the M/C/HC platform and on the verge of throwing myself off, i came so close but simone battle came into my head and the images prior to her death. i came so close to doing something irreversibly stupid and destroying my life and the life of others around me.

with time this full length song and video were released and they have totally altered my life. they have given me a compassion, a reassurance and taken away any suicidal thoughts to which i was privy to in the past. simone was such a talent, such a force of charisma, beauty and talent and it took her suicide to realise the mistakes i made, as an extenuation of that this song has helped change me in so many ways. the poster you see now i hope is different to the one in the past, 'lighthouse' has helped me shed layers of insecurity, misery and anxiety. this song has changed the person i am today so much for the better and will forever be an inspiration and beautiful piece of music for me. the chart position isn't important when you get something that changes your life to that extent.

simone's spirit lives on and i'm sure she's inadvertently saved so many people. the chart position is totally insignificant as it's the song that is truly remarkable and the context, thank you for saving me from a terrible reality; life is too short, be epic, be fabulous and thank you simone/grl for teaching me how precious life is, without it i probably wouldnt be here today

Unfortunately regarding mental health and specifically depression there are no guarantees there won't be another dark period in life that will set off another wave even though it seems everything is okay. The battle doesn't stop there and it's important to keep working on the issues and for others around people affected by them to be supportive and just there.

Jake, that was beautiful. I understand the power of a song like this, I've had some songs that helped me in a dark place too.

I agree chart position doesn't matter too much, but this is one of the most baffling flops I have ever witnessed. I know it's typical to say but I am a bit disgusted that Capital and Radio 1 can't find room for it on their play list yet they continually play the holy bland narcissistic trinity of Ezra, Smith and Sheeran on loop.

Posted by: jark Mar 2 2015, 11:46 AM

To be honest all of George Ezra's singles are better than Lighthouse. The sentiment behind it / the video is nice but the song just ain't strong enough for radio. The chorus doesn't pop at all.

Yeah, it's not hugely strong as a song on its own, but when I watch it with the video, it does still make me feel quite emotional.

Charting high probably isn't important to them, as it's more of a personal song that they probably just wanted to do from love. But hopefully this under-performing doesn't mean they'll get less support in the future with stronger tracks, because I really want them to keep making music as they have incredible pop potential.

It's the song production that did not optimal, the background music on the chorus is just there, not making the chorus a step higher than the verses, so the chorus feels so flat.
I think it would be much better if the background music sounds like Emeli Sandé's Heaven, the drum and bass sound stronger.

Posted by: Robot Mar 5 2015, 06:24 PM

Wow, I'm crying my eyes out watching that video, that's so difficult to watch.

I haven't been in this thread for a while but I have also just seen Jake's post, something else I also found very difficult because even though my depression didn't last as long and wasn't quite as severe, some of what is read there resonates with me. And to see the confidence that you exude when you talk to me and actually the conversation we had only a few hours ago, it's really special to see how you've turned yourself around and got your life into a happy place. The fact this song has helped you do that is really incredible and a testament to the girls.

I know that chart positions in comparison to what they're going through and how the song can make a difference is really quite an unimportant thing but I do still find it gutting that this isn't going to go anywhere. sad.gif

Poor Lauren.

She was the only member bothering to talk to the fans as Paula & Emmalyn just posted other things, I wonder if there's more behind the scenes.

I'm rather disappointed and I'm actually rather surprised that they only bothered releasing one song following 'Ugly Heart'. I thought 'Lighthouse' would have united the band and inspired them to release music down the line.

Posted by: Jay ジ May 31 2015, 04:19 AM

Oh no! sad.gif I was looking forward to seeing how they'd proceed with the group beyond 'Lighthouse'. I guess it's a combination of it not being the same any more after Simone's passing, and things not really happening for them commercially (particularly in the US), has made them decide to call it a day.

Posted by: Hurricane May 31 2015, 06:26 AM

It's beyond awful to say it, but they really lost their spark after Simone's passing.

Don't get me wrong, they were all talented in their own ways and were all great performers, so their performances didn't suck or anything, but they just felt like "another girlgroup" whereas at the start of the 'Ugly Heart' campaign, I was really imagining them taking the world by storm. Shame, shame, shaaaaaame.

They offered us an amazing EP and great performances.

It's tragic, but it was nice.

Posted by: Sean. May 31 2015, 03:08 PM

No offence to Paula but what is she actually going to do? She was by far the weakest vocalist in the group and dance skills can only take you so far. Wouldn't mind a Lauren solo career though *.*

I do understand though, I don't think they intended to go on past Lighthouse regardless of it's success.

Posted by: (Zach) May 31 2015, 03:28 PM

This is very unfortunate. I really liked them and despite not charting in the US, Ugly Heart really became a massive hit in several countries with some serious longevity. I thought Lighthouse was an amazing song but it clearly didn't connect so they should've tried at least one more uptempo before giving up. But like Lee said, I'm sure there was a lot going on behind the scenes and they just couldn't keep it together which is understandable.

How many failed groups has Robin Antin had? Time to just get PCD back together because we know Nicole's solo career (if you can call it that) is over.

Posted by: Liаm May 31 2015, 03:30 PM

Simone held them together really I definitely agree sad.gif So it's not a surprise, but it's still gutting. Their material so far, especially Ugly Heart, was SO promising even if I didn't fully get the fuss with Lighthouse outside of the message/connotations. They really could have been the next big girlband, on more than a Little Mix level, so it's a shame, it really is sad.gif

I don't think she's talentless. Her voice actually comes across quite strong and unique in the studio. She just doesn't sound good live while doing the routines which is understandable. Natasha sounds better live but sounds incredibly whiny/nasally at all times so I don't think that's really any better. We all know Paula is the worst vocally.

I do believe a PCD reunion can and will happen as the girls have hinted at it quite a lot. Nicole would have to share the vocals this time around though and I'm not sure she would ever be willing to do that.

On a side note, the Paradiso Girls never stood a chance with Aria as their lead singer. Talk about annoying. Lauren and Chelsea were the only worthy members.

Posted by: Mackenzie Jun 4 2015, 02:00 AM

So sad, I wish all the girls luck. Show Me What You Got, Ugly Heart and Lighthouse all feel like girlgroup classics. As much as I love Fifth Harmony, it feels like it's just going to be an overload of teeny-girl groups with a demographic of 8-14 year olds from now on seen as though Little Mix and Fifth Harmony are the only current girlbands around. GRL could ALL sing...incredibly well, all dance (especially Simone), had unstoppable stage presence, have/had amazing chemistry from what it seemed, authentic personalities despite the Dr Luke input and were all beautiful visually on top. They were and are the guidelines for a world-dominating girl band and it's so sad they didn't reach their full potential. First the Saturdays hiatus and now GRL. Not a girl group in sight I can stan for whole-heartedly without feeling like they're going to disperse sooner then preferred than again I don't blame them, it was always going to be hard to re-group once Simone sadly passed. I hope they all succeed and thrive in whatever field they chose to pursue next.

I guess you could count Girls United as being related as that's where the remaining member of Girlicious went after that project ended.

Wow! Bizzare move though - Understand how difficult it must have been for them to continue after what happened but to randomly reform after they have lost all their momentum is prop ably not the best move? Really really hope they can salvage a career though as 'Ugly Heart' was like a breathe of fresh air in the girl band arena!

Only Lauren and Natasha are back.

Emmalyn favourited a Tweet by Perez Hilton saying 'i loved them but nobody was really asking for a comeback were they?'.

Wow.

They need to rename, it won't be GRL without the other two and Simone. Poor Lauren, I'm sure this is her like fourth attempt at girl band success!
