Yes provided they place it in context which from the article it seems they are doing. The BBC are obviously not endorsing the speech.

We can't ignore something historic just because it's a sensitive topic or contains outdated views, everything significant deserves to be analysed. That speech was undeniably extremely impactful in it's time in history and is worthy of analysis and critique.

As I understand it the BBC will be examining the speech and its impact. That seems to be a perfectly reasonable subject for Radio 4 to cover and it would be hard to do so without being able to quote the speech itself.

I wonder how many people even know what was said - certainly few people under 60 probably would.

A few key sections of it have been quoted many times, not least when the racist old goat died.

I won't be nostalgically revisiting the hate speech of a detestable human being moaning about members of the British Empire coming to the "home country" because they were black. At least the old racist, who I loathed as a child, a teenager, and an adult, lived to see his crap lies and outrageous claims shown to be not the end of the white master race at all. Speaking on behalf of non-whites who were around at that time (and they were very very much in the minority) they suffered unavoidable awful racism thanks to the likes of hate-justifiers like Powell.

Just to point out that racism in politics is still a thing:
ITV News Verified account @itvnews Follow Follow @itvnews More 'I'm British and have lived here nearly all my life, so why must I leave?' Glenda Caesar is part of the 'Windrush Generation', one of thousands of Caribbean immigrants who now face an uncertain future https://bit.ly/2GQxy1H They had a right to come here, and now have had that right removed. Thanks Mrs May, on behalf of all the ageing British people coming from countries invaded by the UK exercising their rights and then getting tossed out because the UK failed to give them documents or keep records of when people entered the country, despite records on schooling and taxes paid over 50 years or more. That's our Prime Minister behind all this policy. The one that has failed to stop non-EU citizens coming to work in the UK, as she had the power to do. Just has a problem with old black people, apparently. |

It would be hard to conduct a proper examination of the speech's impact without putting it in context. Precisely - although its debatable how well the 1968 context will translate to a 2018 audience. This post has been edited by vidcapper: Apr 14 2018, 08:19 AM |

Precisely - although its debatable how well the 1968 context will translate to a 2018 audience. Piece of cake. people in 1968 had no experience of non-white people in the main, having never been abroad, and racist lies spread by people like Powell spread fear deliberately with the aim to exclude non-whites from the country and shit-stir. I think that about sums it up. |

I think that about sums it up. That's certainly one aspect of it. |

I think broadcasting it on it's anniversary is wrong, as if it's something of note rather than something shite, but it should form part of history courses in the same way as slavery and the holocaust should. I was recently shocked to hear how many Americans had no idea about the Holocaust and how it came about (it's a large percentage of the population)
