Yes I think it is okay for contextual purposes. It would be a whole other matter if it was being endorsed by the broadcaster but that does not seem to be the case. The speech is of course awful and people defending him on social media are making me eye-roll. One particular justification is that he "was an educated man". Yes, perhaps so, but a racist one at that. tongue.gif

AIUI Ofcom can only act retrospectively, though. unsure.gif

Indeed. They have no power to ban a programme. That said, they may have the power to seek an injunction to stop a programme if it would be in breach of the law. Presumably Adonis could also seek such an injunction himself.

That might well backfire though, as banning *anything* tends to draw more attention to it that would otherwise would have been the case - e.g. various people trying to use super-injunctions to hush-up their dodgy behaviour.

I listened to the Radio 4 broadcast of the text of his speech on Saturday, and it sounded very racist, even to *me*.

I can easily imagine it coming from the BNP, NF, or EDL. I don't believe anyone else here would even be able to sit through it.

If you're feeling masochistic though, there's another programme about it on Channel 5 this Friday at 10pm.

There should be an amnesty for people like her who've been here this long.

It seems like this issue is already being looked into...

This is now well past the necessary 100k need for HoC debate.

The 100,000 figure is the figure necessary for a potion to be considered for debate. There is no requirement for any petition actually to be debated.

True, but in this case the website says 'Parliament will debate this petition on 30 April 2018.'

Has anyone said that they find the name of the dog offensive? Yes, the word is usually considered very offensive, but it wasn't meant in that sense at the time..

I'm glad *you* made that point, as I suspect if I'd done so, I'd have been accused of trivialising racism? unsure.gif

You missed the point though. The point is that the DM are constantly making up stories about claiming to be offended by something when, in reality, the number of people offended is tiny (or even zero). It's all part of their persecution complex as they continue to claim that "the left" are denying freedom of speech.

The Left believe in 'freedom of speech' as long as they approve of what is being said. wink.gif

Seriously, though...

So you're saying, for example, there is not one grain of truth in stories about university debates refusing to give a platform to controversial right-wing speakers? unsure.gif

In the specific case of the Dambusters, when was the last time it was aired uncut on TV?

You could substitute left for right and that would still be true. Neither extreme want true free speech, just the freedom for their group to say whatever they like while censoring the other.

As I haven't seen Dambusters since the 1970s, I have absolutely no idea.

I didn't say all the DM stories are complete fabrication although a very high proportion are either that or grossly exaggerated.

iro The Dambusters, it was still shown uncut in the 80's as I still have it on video from then.

As for DM stories, IMO very few are outright fabrications, but the do tend to seek out contentious stories and/or put their own spin on ones covered elsewhere in the national media. Personally, I find that a useful balance to the left-wing papers who tend to be rather naive on social issues, such as crime.
