Emma Corrin was fantastic as Diana, a real star-making performance for her. Gillian Anderson & Olivia Colman were brilliant in their respective roles so much that I forget they were acting (although I don't think Anderson got Thatcher's voice spot on). I'm surprised how much more likeable Tobias Menzies' performance of Phillip was compared to Matt Smith.

I know a lot of liberties have been taken with the history involved, but the one moment that I though was made up was one that actually happened - where Diana danced to Uptown Girl with Wayne Sleep for Charles' birthday.

Much as I find Gillian rather OFF as Thatcher, he has her portrayal spot on. I've decided to assume that Gillian only watched her through the guise of Spitting Image and based her portrayl on that.

I'm still only halfway through, trying to take my time since we have 2 YEARS to wait for Season 5. Anne, Margaret, and rather surprisingly Philip are all coming out of this quite well. Or at least better than Charles, Edward, Andrew and poor old reduced-to-bit-part Elizabeth and the Queen Mumsie who is almost entiely surperfluous.

Finished watching season 4 and absolutely loved it again. The cast are SO well chosen for the roles each is excellent! Diana is one sweeping the award shows if there is any justice in this next awards season, her portrayal of Diana with her mannerisms etc is spot on!

I low key hate Philip now off the back of this show though, while the actor is fantastic he is portrayed as such a w*n**r laugh.gif

I've finished this now and can't help but feel a little disappointed by it. It did have a lot more characters in okay than any previous season, but I feel almost everyone (other than Diana in the final few episodes) was very underserved. HBC barely featured and the the Queen Mother was basically entirely superfluous.

It did feel perhaps more critcal of THE CROWN than it had before, but I think my abivolence for Diana (the person) probably meant I was coming at that storyline from a different point of view.

Completely agreed! Anne was seriously underused. She's a brilliant character with a very capable actress but she barely featured apart from as a support really. They also completely brushed over her marriage breakdown. As you say, Margaret and The Queen Mother barely featured aside from the Margaret centric episode. The Queen Mother was basically relegated to a glorified extra :')

The concentration on Charles and Diana just felt too soapy and routed in gossip.

It also felt like a glaring omission to brush past so many major 80s political events when the first two series in particular dealt with those aspects so well.

Especially glaring that they made such a massive deal out of Gillian as Thatcher only for her to barely feature for most of the season, aside from them hardly looking at the seismic shifts she brought about. I still enjoyed it, it was as sumptuous as ever, brilliantly acted and felt entertaining throughout but definitely felt like more of a soap than a drama this time round. All in all my least favourite season I think.

Wasn’t the 80s Charles and Diana though the Queen Mum woulda been quite old by then maybe 80?
