Apparently Westlife will be returning soon with a new single co-written by Ed Sheeran.

If it's true, hopefully it's out by Christmas! biggrin.gif

"Stools" is actually quite a nice word to describe just about all of their output.

Posted by: liamk97 24th September 2018, 03:32 PM

Some sort of celebration to mark 20 years since their formation, I guess.

They had some tunes (World of Our Own still goes off when it's played on nights out in my town) but an Ed Sheeran co-write fills me with dread.

It’s funny to get a younger perspective on Westlife - someone who didn’t have to live through their popularity laugh.gif

Though in retrospect, they started off alright! It just got worse when they became karaoke kings. So many number 1s mellow.gif

Posted by: gavindeejay 24th September 2018, 04:16 PM

I would love to do a Buzzjack Westlife rate just for the laugh.gif's. I'm by no means a fan but can see 'Uptown Girl', World Of or Own' and 'Bop Bop Baby' as reasonably ok catchy pop songs. Their ballads though 'You Raise Me Up' aside are mainly awful.

Posted by: danG 24th September 2018, 04:25 PM

You Raise Me Up is a bit of a guilty pleasure (though not something I ever really play out of choice either)

Most of their output was awful and forgettable, hard to believe they achieved 14 #1 singles.

I did enjoy some of their material.
I always preferred Take That but Westlife released numeorus singles i liked and were better than Boyzone.
It will be interesting to see how the comeback is perceived.
I am sure Shane Filan more than the others will be hoping for a big success to help his financial situation.

Posted by: Steve201 24th September 2018, 07:33 PM

Take Tha and Westlife aren't really comparable imo! TT at least had huge talent and original songs.

Westlife fav the non single When Your Looking Like That!

Posted by: Mariner's Crotch 24th September 2018, 07:52 PM

They are a disgusting karaoke band, manufactured to the extreme.

Urgh.

Talentless trash.

Posted by: Hans 24th September 2018, 08:02 PM

I think Boyzone (among other boy bands) made them seem less bad at first.

Posted by: ThePensmith 24th September 2018, 08:46 PM

I wasn't Westlife's greatest fan at the time. Their incessant ability to release what to all intents and purposes could have been them burping the alphabet and still somehow get a number one with it. Likewise when they won 'Record of the Year' on ITV every sodding year with a single that had been out the month before - if that - and somehow got smugger each time they did so.

Having said all that though, they did show some occasional glimpses of brilliance. Specifically, on 'When You're Looking Like That' (how that was bumped as a single over 'Queen Of My Heart' God only knows), 'World Of Our Own' and also 'What About Now'. The latter was a cover of course but it was actually the only time they took an existing song and actually did a good job of it.

I can imagine Radio 2 will get heavily behind this, perhaps more so than they even have with Boyzone's latest single.

Queen of my Heart was probabaly favoured due to the November release date, slow winter/Xmas ballad!

Is there even interest for a tour ?

Posted by: Lomadz 25th September 2018, 12:27 PM

They could be massive with this return! Massive gap in the market for them and were huge beyond believe. The tour would sell out very quickly as well! Sensible.

Posted by: Lomadz 25th September 2018, 12:31 PM

The hate on here is hilarious, proves how huge they were!! The single will not dent the top 40 but the album could be massive. 5 year deal apparently! My best mate was obsessed and when I went to see them live, understood why. Not many bands have the chemistry they did, shame that xfactor and pop idol etc ruined that, bands are just thrown together now.

Posted by: Mariner's Crotch 25th September 2018, 12:36 PM

This band was manufactured, they fought all the time, and was absolute corporate x factor rubbish. Shitelife

Posted by: gooddelta 25th September 2018, 12:54 PM

They exploited the way the charts acted at the time and peddled a lot of crap during their tenure but some of their early material was quite good, as were many of their uptempos. I always had a soft spot for Hey Whatever, which was underrated by their standards.

From Mandy onwards though they basically became a karaoke covers band and it became tedious that they'd return every November with some huge dire ballad cover (You Raise Me Up was ok though), snatch an easy No.1/top 3 and a massive album and then disappear for another year.

Same, very good song.

The label ruined them in my opinion with the covers but there first 3 albums were good.

Slightly cringy and embarrassing reading through some comments on here such as shitelife etc, is everyone over 18 on here?

Plus, as a music fan is it not best to wait and hear the song/s instead of judging before hand because of image etc.

Posted by: Mariner's Crotch 25th September 2018, 01:30 PM

No as they are a crime against music. They aren't a band. They are a manufactured cog and allll their albums are dross.

Posted by: Explozian 25th September 2018, 01:35 PM

I'm only seven years old, but I can't wait for my silly preconceived opinions to be blown away when dark-haired Westlife rises off his stool, lifts his dead eyes dolefully to the camera and simpers his way through whatever cloying Ed Sheeran ballad pays for his new conservatory. I'm looking forward to serious artistic growth, like one of them growing a beard.

True however he needs a 'Perfect' type song, not one of these half talking song like he did with Matt terry, 1D etc. Just feel it may end up like 'Lighthouse' did when they got Gary Barlow to write them a song.

Posted by: gooddelta 27th September 2018, 12:13 PM

For all intents and purposes Perfect essentially was a Westlife song. Only Ed could put out a big string-laden dated ballad like that in this day and age and get a huge smash.

But yes, something like that could suit them very well. He also wrote Boyzone's new single Because though, so it could be something more along those lines instead.

Because is not a strong single at all which is the worry. Westlife's 1st singles were always big big ballads which is what the need.

waited for so long! great and exciting time to be alive. the news has been shared for 250k now from different news uk ie outlets

looks like legit umg staging site of westlife official site currently hidden
https://westlife.stage-umg-uk-wp.com/full-screen-video/#

the rumors are true! they are now signed to umg virgin emi

the signs from the past week
1. Westlife's official website recently turns out just a blank black screen whereas before, it redirects us to their offical FB page. Check it by yourself and visit www.westlife.com.
2. Westlife's FB page updated a new website address last week which redirects us to their Official Spotify site which means, they want us to stream their upcoming singles as it will now count for the charts. http://smarturl.it/westlifetoptracks
3. Westlife's Wikipedia page recently updated where it added an album named 'Revive' for 2019. It also adds a named tour 'Revive tour' on the tour section. (i know this is not reliable)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westlife
4. 2018 is almost done but Shane and Mark didn't even bother to prepare and hint a new album for 2019.
5. Kian both had met Shane & Nicky individually earlier this month.
6. Mark recently met band manager Louie Walsh at Childline.
7. Westlife reunion news went worldwide this time and been headlined by many news articles.
*. nicky's been absent on his radio show for two days now and will be back tomorrow as someone have seen two of four lads on heathrow back to dublin. the executive producer of the show hinted nicky's coffee meetings in london

Posted by: myxxd 2nd October 2018, 06:45 PM

I hope the ed sheeran track won;t be like because by boyzone and trust fund baby by why don;t we if it's true. knowing louis walsh management for so long know I have a feeling it will just be a buzz as the first single will be a different track. maybe they will release it second or third single. according to reports they've been preparing this for the past 12 months and mark has written 30 songs that might be included on the album

Posted by: Lomadz 2nd October 2018, 09:02 PM

It's definitely happening then, great news!! Cannot wait for it, just wish the first single wasn't an Ed song. Have been listening to them for the last few days now to get in the mood.

Are the boys back?

Posted by: Lomadz 3rd October 2018, 09:24 AM

Din not know Ed wrote 'Trust Fund Baby', please keep him away from Westlife!! They need to get Mac/Hector etc in to write some hits! Hopefully they see sense in all this.

Obviously they will be concentrating on album success and HAVE to got for the xmas market, could be huge. Shouldn't release any singles officially as they are not urban etc and streaming would ruin it.

Although I hope they don't do their stall routine. laugh.gif I can imagine them getting a performance on X-factor for the single. Perhaps a performance on Strictly too. Posted by: Jay ☆ 4th October 2018, 04:17 PM

^ What happened in June 2016? ohmy.gif

I was never a big fan of Westlife, but I do think they had more than a few decent moments to be fair. I actually liked all the first album singles (bar the Double A Side covers which I found too twee). Beyond that I enjoyed When You're Looking Like That, World of Our Own, Obvious, Amazing and Something Right. Out of all their covers, I think You Raise Me Up & What About Now were their best.

I'm hoping that their comeback single is more of an uptempo moment! I'm not really here for their 2018 version of Ed's 'Perfect'.

Flying Without Wings is an ALL TIME CLASSIC.

Posted by: Dobbo 4th October 2018, 05:27 PM

Album will do very well, as for the single? Forget about it - in the streaming era it has zero chance whatsoever.

Okay so it might just about scrape the top 40 as Steps managed that.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 4th October 2018, 06:33 PM

Steps - 'Scared of the Dark' would have likely gone low Top 20 if today's chart rules had been in place at the time of its release, i.e. ACR / 3 tracks per artist only! It charted below the entirety of Ed Sheeran's Divide album. sad.gif

So who knows... if Westlife's comeback single is #1 success on iTunes like Steps, then that might be enough in itself for them to get a Top 40 hit, before factoring in any audio/video streams. I could tentatively imagine a number 21-30 area debut for a comeback single at least?

But yeah, the main success will definitely lie with an album and the tour!

another confimation by louis on the sun

And their brand new return single will be released next month.

In an exclusive interview with the Irish Sun Louis Walsh said he credits the songwriting team of Ed Sheeran and producer Steve Mac with coming up with four new tracks for Westlife which will put them back at the top of the charts.

Louis told us: “Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac are the best songwriting team on the planet right now.

“The two lads have written four tracks on the new Westlife album, one of them is an uptempo anthem, I can’t give the name of yet, which is going to be massive

I think everyone is underestimating the mum power that will flock to Tesco to buy the CD - Boyzone came back with a #1 album and Top 10 single and I think WL could easily do the same. Louis will get them a ton of promo and the fact the comeback single is written by Ed will have MOR radio creaming themselves for it.

another confimation by louis on the sun

And their brand new return single will be released next month.

In an exclusive interview with the Irish Sun Louis Walsh said he credits the songwriting team of Ed Sheeran and producer Steve Mac with coming up with four new tracks for Westlife which will put them back at the top of the charts.

Louis told us: “Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac are the best songwriting team on the planet right now.

“The two lads have written four tracks on the new Westlife album, one of them is an uptempo anthem, I can’t give the name of yet, which is going to be massive

Woe! Reckon they should do a double A-side like the old days. Release the up-tempo and a classic ballad. They are getting this all right I reckon.

Westlife describe Steve as perfectionist so I'm expecting a great upbeat and ballad tracks. he did world of our own and Ed's shape of you

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 6th October 2018, 04:51 PM

There is still a huge audience there for them and while the comeback won't be as big as take that's I can still see them doing well with albums and tours. Like take that, i can see them staying together too as apart from nick they havnt had great solo careers,Louis Walshe likewise doesn't have any other acts and financially Shane really needs it.

Posted by: Spiceboy 6th October 2018, 05:29 PM

I am by no means a Westlife 'fan' however I do think they have some great songs, and Shane has an amazing voice.

I love
- When you're looking like that
- World of our own
- You raise me up
- Fool again
- Uptown girl

All great tracks. I also met them once when I was working at MTV and they are genuinely the nicest celebrities I have ever met. (I met tons including Alexandra Burke, Ellie Goulding, 50 Cent, Zac Efron, Charlie from Busted - who was a dick). They were the only ones who actually spoke to the crew as well as Laura Whitmore. And they also went round shaking everyone's hands thanking them. I hope they do really well.

I had a not very nice experience with Geri where she was downright rude to me at a signing, didn't even look at me and ignored me when I spoke to her, they say you should never meet your idols (Victoria and Mel B were so lovely though!)

Posted by: zeze88 6th October 2018, 09:17 PM

The amount of hatred for Westlife on this thread is hilarious. I know its not everybody's cup of tea but they are not the worst thing ever like so many claim they are. The biggest problem is that they released far too many covers as singles and even two themed cover albums. The sad this is that I think some of their mistakes aren’t their fault. How many times have they said in their book that they won’t do covers but Simon always found a way. Its amazing how he made them do What About Now, the only bloody cover on the album and the only single from it as well.

Plus, music critics were sometimes too harsh and they never even bothered to listen to it - that was very clear during both Where We are and Gravity albums.

Its so obvious they are fully aware of the general opinion of them which is why they released that funny comeback clip, with them sitting on the stool and Nicky going for the key change biggrin.gif This doesn't mean things will be the same though, they themselves were sick of covers. And since Simon is out of the picture, he at least won't be able to pressure them. Its interesting they have another manager alongside Walsh.

Posted by: Rooney 7th October 2018, 10:32 AM

Westlife are no way that bad. They have some really good tracks in their back catalogue, their problem (as already mentioned on here) was that they were just puppets. Their team knew how to get them a number 1 single and a number 1 album, and that the Heart FM listeners would lap up any lazy cover single. A lot of the hate comes from how they manipulated the chart and who can ever forget the infamous chart battle with Oasis!

They had little control over what they released so I can't blame them too much and I do like how they are poking fun at themselves. I think there will be interest in the lead single, maybe not another number 1 but just like Take That etc. I think if they are clever they can market themselves to their older fanbase and some new fans too and still manage to sell out arenas in the UK and probably stadiums in Ireland.

Posted by: Chez VampireBat 7th October 2018, 12:35 PM

A polite reminder to please respect other's views and that the medium of music taste is not an excuse to get personal. Next reminder won't be so polite.

Anyway, Westlife could be quite good when they didn't resort to the 'classic Westlife' formula that besieged the latter part of their career and the various uninspired cover versions. I can only hope this isn't one of those, but the writer of the track doesn't fill me with hope.

Posted by: zeze88 7th October 2018, 01:02 PM

I am not too happy about Ed either but the fact that he is working with Steve Mac does sound good as he is the one that wrote Swear It Again, Flying Without Wings, World Of Our Own.

Its ok if they keep the formula and change a bit, things can't stay exactly the same this time, I'm sure they know that. Honestly, the only issue I have is the fact that they had so many covers. It wouldn't even be as bad if they weren't released as singles. No one can deny Against All Odds, Uptown Girl and You Raise Me Up has done wonders for them but Home, When You Tell Me You Love Me and What About Now were just unecessary - not to mention 2 cover albums + Face to Face that was half covers as well. It made me sick when Shane actually said (he was obviously instructed to say that) the reason they released The Love Album is because there weren't original songs good enough for them at the time. The sad thing is that they were very excited writing for the 3rd album but management weren't happy about that, Shane admitted how scared he was writing for his debut because he was never encouraged to do it.

Case in point, at the very last minute, the management decided to use Lighthouse as a single over co-written song from Mark Feehily, Beautiful World, just because Gary Barlow wrote it - whats funny is that I later found out that song was Gary's 3 year old leftover. They probably thought its a winner just because of Gary. Obviously they were wrong, the song was mediocre at best and it ended up #32, which is the only time Westlife even had a Top 30. Heck, they never even had a Top 20.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 7th October 2018, 01:38 PM

Beautiful world should have been a single one of my fave songs from them. I think they need to take a leaf out of Take That's book when they returned as they had much more control and say in everything and they done what they felt comfortable with which wasn't the case when they were originally together. I know westlife have a much better relationship with Louis than take that had with Nigel but they still need to have much more say in the decision making.

I know biggrin.gif it would make a lot more sense if someone with bigger career said this though. Plus, Shane has released 3 decently succesful albums and had decent tours, Mark released the album he wanted and Nicky has a successful radio show, so its such crap they are doing nothing at home.

Yes, a few months he said he would be all up for it, he even dissed the lads when they declined the huge contract with Brian being back.

https://www.thesun.ie/tvandshowbiz/music/2500220/brian-mcfadden-says-ego-is-destroying-a-full-westlife-reunion-as-he-claims-major-offer-on-table-for-five-piece-to-reunite/

I'm sure at least a very small piece of him regrets it, or else he wouldn't be acting like a moron now.

What Keith said is also absurd (sorry if this was already posted):

https://www.rsvplive.ie/news/celebs/keith-duffy-speaks-out-westlife-13363626

I’m sorry but this is crap. They said so many times they first started as a supporting act for Boyzone and Backstreet Boys.

In the long run, if they indeed signed a 5 year contract, its best they don't have any tension in the band. As much as I love Brian, I honestly believe it would have been akward between them. They haven't seen Brian for years, he even talked shit about them a few months ago and then he of course deleted the tweets.

The truth is, they aren't friends anymore. And on top of that, many fans haven't forgiven him for announcing he was leaving 3 weeks before the tour. It was different with Robbie because I think they did bury the axe but with Westlife boys and Bri I am not sure there isn't any bad blood. If not, they are still strangers so the vibe at least wouldn't be genuine.

Posted by: ¡Michael Myers! 7th October 2018, 10:26 PM

Worst kind of love on his 'Right Here' album should have been released, loved it.

I really liked 'Completely' on his last album and I think he co-wrote that.

On a separate note, I am so tempted to get tickets to Croke Park next year and take the family to Westlife. My wife isn't a fan but she enjoyed the o2 concert I took her to years ago.

I can't lie...beautifully written and expressed. I think that's what often overlooked especially with bands or solo artists whose fanbase is predominantly one market (or in some cases perceived to be). A lot of the time, those artists are there for that person who is a fan of them, in that moment where they feel specifically feel connected to that song or that positive influence that got them through a bad time or reminds them of a happier time. Music can be so powerful like that.

I remember getting relentlessly bullied when I started secondary school because I loved S Club 7. But they were a point of reassurance for me when I was 11/12, and for that reason I can't help but feel/think fondly of them, even when all the stuff that's happened to them in the last 15 years since they split has happened.

This sounds to me like an error, January 1st 2020 sounds like some placeholder date you can see on various stores when you don't know the actual date. Not to mention that January 1st 2020 falls on Wednesday laugh.gif

But single is definitely coming in the next few weeks though.

Tour will be from May to July 2019. July 5 Croke Park will be Shane's birthday! the pre-order limited signed album went live at the same time of announcement but was cleared just minutes after, I guess it sold out fast. Yup the dates are confusing. new single out in mid November maybe another one in January/February, April (their first single's 20th anniversary) before their tour and August/Sptember before the album's out. they may add dates like the last one in 2012 and may add international dates sometime in February/March.

I'm surprised they aren't going with an ultimate collection type of release straight off with the new single and then release the new album in q4 2019.The buzz is there to get away with another style of greatest hits release.

Damn they look hotter than ever in that promo picture.

Was never a fan of them, mostly because I didnt care for their syrupy love ballads and covers. However "World Of Our Own" remains their best song, such a tremendous bop! wub.gif

album not out til next sept? most ridiculous thing ever

Posted by: myxxd 19th October 2018, 06:39 AM

I agree with the album release date. Initial report were May. I thought they will do a January or March 2019, months when Adele, Sheeran and Ezra's album became successful but I guess they will do the traditional ber months won't be surprised if it will be pushed to October, one of their most successful month when My Love You Raise Me Up and Face to Face were released.

But if this will give us more singles prior to album release then I'm up for it and willing to wait. fans have been deprived by Cowell for Westlife singles for over a decade.

Posted by: zeze88 19th October 2018, 02:36 PM

The live shows start this weekend. I presume they can appear in time of single release. I think they deaerve to perform there considering how many times they performed in the past.

Posted by: Lomadz 19th October 2018, 02:43 PM

I'm sure it is a given that they will!

Posted by: myxxd 19th October 2018, 03:19 PM

They approached Simon first for their comeback but he's only interested if Brian;s involved and the four wants "new challenges" that's why they went to UMG. Simon wished them well and luck. Nicky just said they are open of working again with Simon in the future. For sure they'll be on X Factor, Simon needs the ratings right now, Westlife might help at least to move it up as they are the most performed professional and international act there.

I know of Chris martin and even Robert Pattinson but I haven't heard that Ed is a fan biggrin.gif Of course, fan or not, the fact that he listened to their GH means he wants to still capture the Westlife sound which is good. Ed co-wrote with Steve Mac a new single for Olly Murs which I really like so hopefully Westlife's will also be great.

Revealing just how keen Ed was for the group to re-form, Shane revealed the hitmaker had actually written a number of songs for the band before they even decided to get back together – two years ago.

‘Before we knew we were getting back together, he [Ed Sheeran] had wrote songs for Westlife with Steve Mac,’ Mark revealed.

‘He told us when he was younger, he used to learn how to play the guitar to the Westlife greatest hit album.’

https://evoke.ie/2018/10/23/showbiz/gossip/ed-sheeran-wrote-westlife-songs

most likely the upcoming songs were done the same time Shape of you was done.
I remember some westlife fans heard ed said on itunes festival to put their hands up in the air like they were listening to Westlife songs.

Posted by: myxxd 23rd October 2018, 03:21 PM

https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/music-news/there-were-only-two-people-who-could-get-westlife-back-out-of-bed-in-2018-ed-sheeran-was-one-of-them-nicky-byrne-37450216.html

Last year band members Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, and Nicky Byrne approached long-time Westlife collaborator Steve Mac, who had penned and produced several of their hits including Flying Without Wings and Swear It Again, to write new music.

“He was writing with Ed Sheeran who turned around to him one day in a songwriting session and said, ‘I'd love to write a Westlife style song’, and they went off and wrote a Westlife style song,” revealed Kian.

“We didn’t know any of this was happening and we got back together, behind closed doors, and went to see Steve and he played us a few songs and he was like, ‘This is actually an Ed song that Ed wrote saying he wanted to write a Westlife style song.”

Nicky revealed that he had had a conversation with Kian two years ago about reforming and his concerns about “where Westlife’s music fits into the current market” and not wanting to be simply a “nostalgia” act.

“[I said] we need Ed Sheeran or someone of that ilk. Little did we know Ed was in the background saying, “I want to write a Westlife tune’,” he said.

“Really there was only two people who could get Westlife back out of bed – Steve Mac and Ed Sheeran, and we’re in that position, thankfully.”

Kian said that fans would be “taken aback” by the new track while Shane added, “it’s exactly where Westlife need to be.”

Posted by: zeze88 23rd October 2018, 04:23 PM

I love how Kian sounds hungry and eager to be bigger than before, that they know themselves they have to do things diffferently. I know people are annoyed that the album is possibly coming in September 2019 but its great that they are not rushing anything, it means they care to do it right.

Thats what I meant, sorry if I wasn't clear biggrin.gif I just meant that artists often like to say how they are wrongly quoted, that they took it out of context - well, when you have Twitter, you can't say that anymore. The fact that they often delete tweets (like Brian did), probably means they know they are wrong or they regret it but there is no way someone won't notice and capture it before its deleted laugh.gif

Chartwise I agree, their last album didn't leave much of an impact, they had only 1 single that was mediocre at best. However, touring was very successful. I mean, they sold out 2 Croke Park gigs. Ending it all singing in front of 187 000 people. Not only that, The 23 June 2012 date broke the stadium record for selling out its tickets for 4 minutes and it was apparently (according to Pollstar) the 11th largest attendance at an outdoor stadium worldwide.

If this doesn't look like ending on a high, then I don't know.

ABBA and Westlife had almost the same chart run in UK if you look at it. can you believe abba's last single Thank you for the music was their lowest charted single since their breakout song Waterloo aside from I Do

Westlife's leaked demo song Beautiful in white has the most views in a single video by the band already in youtube, was uploaded in 2011 the year they announced their split, and it was never released as a single or made it on any westlife albums

Yeah, I'm always impressed by the impact of certain things that aren't official. This lyric video of I'll See You Again has 34 million views with people commenting below to this day:

Went to a restaurant tonight with the family and 'Amazing' came on....what a tune.

That thread on your twitter is amazing!!

I haven't heard that latest radio interview from a few days ago but I saw someone on Twitter posting a quote from Mark, he said he hopes they can release the new single before Christmas.

So who knows, the single might not come out in November. To be fair, they never said it will nor did they even mention the single release date in any of the interviews - the media are the one who kept saying the single will come in a few weeks time which led us to believe its sometime in November.

Posted by: myxxd 2nd November 2018, 11:44 AM

people from rte have already heard the single. there's no way it won't be released this month. they just changed their youtube channel to capital w as Westlife and just uploaded Let There be love as an official video (intentionally) when most fans knew it's an old song. they always upload something on yt when there's a release coming up esp during solo days of shane.

Really? Can you give us an example? Why are they doing this, and how many days after the new song is coming out usually?

to buzz the fans lol no definite date of course. it is only them who knows their schedule. the admin of their youtube site are the ones doing that not the band. they just changed Let there be love to official audio by the way.
for example when Shane was about to release the deluxe edition of Love always in asia and in uk/ie westlifevevo uploaded videos before that just check the dates

Maybe its not about WL but Keith should really shut up. I mean, they did get back together so how is that not a reunion? And please, like he knows for sure they won’t come back again.

Posted by: Lomadz 3rd November 2018, 10:40 PM

That article is hilarious! Boyzone are not leaving on top, they are struggling to sell the Brighton centre and get more than a hundred thousand views of tube haha.
BITTER

Posted by: Spiceboy 4th November 2018, 11:36 PM

To be fair he never said anything about any other band on there. The article says it is a sly dig but the wording doesn't sound like a dig at all, he actually says he takes his hat off to those continuing. It's a bit bloody late to say that though as this is their third reunion lol.

this is the real destruction to westlife's legacy

even kian sings better

those guys should be banned from singing westlife....

Posted by: zeze88 5th November 2018, 02:59 PM

I think Brian has a good voice but Keith, he is tragic. I think he is just jealous Westlife had a bigger success that Boyzone. I mean, not many can say they sold out 6 Croke Park gigs and Boyzone didn’t even have 1 concert there.

Anyway, that last interview they gave, the radio host asked them would they consider a 3rd night at Croke for Twenty tour and they said they haven’t thought about it and they were humble saying they are not sure if they could sell it. I am not sure either to be honest.

if it was a 3rd consecutive night i dont think so, if it was like a month later then maybe.... Not sure if you can cut off the attentance from 85 to 70, so u can sell out more nights smile.gif

Anyone knows why Westlife never did a stadium tour?

Posted by: myxxd 5th November 2018, 04:06 PM

Croke Park? they played four times there already and two more next year and there are rumors for a third one

they will get there. record labels have surveys prior to album and concert dates releases. maybe it's still premature for them to do British stadium tours

just realized spice and westlife are on the same label and little mix, 1d and westlife have the same pr now

Posted by: Charis 6th November 2018, 08:33 AM

in 2001 they did 6 shows in MEN Arena and 9 in Wembley Arena.... That is like 100k in each of the two cities.... They could easily sold out a stadium or more... They do it in Croke Park in Ireland which is one of the biggest in Europe, i don't see why not in England... It's just a strange fact..

Its different though in 2001 or 2008 when they even first tried Croke. I agree they could have had stadium tour in the early days but boybands just didn’t do that these days, I think Teke That are the first who did and that was also after their comeback.

Posted by: Charis 6th November 2018, 12:22 PM

Also Spice girls are doing it.... I believe they could easily sell out a few stadiums every year...

Posted by: myxxd 6th November 2018, 12:50 PM

i have a feeling they will add dates for dublin glasgow belfast london birmingham newcastle manchester

tomorrow is "#westlifewednesday" stay tuned they might have new announcement they usually do it every wednesday i hope it will be the new single. sick of waiting

Posted by: myxxd 6th November 2018, 12:54 PM

might be afraid like what happened to rihanna's wembley stadium date she had lots of UK #1 and still. they might think it's not the right time. another one I'm thinking they or someone will be producing soon is a musical about them. take that spice girls did it 17, 18 years after their formation

I didn’t know Rihanna didn’t sell Wembley stadium but yeah, thats a good example. There is nothing worse for an artist not to sell a gig. Its best not to jump the gun. I always felt that musical about them is something Westlife aren’t keen on doing though. A concert documentary or something like that would be nice though.

Posted by: Charis 6th November 2018, 01:51 PM

most probably rihanna didnt fill the stadium cause people who werent interested in the event bought tickets in order to resell... but ok..

Posted by: myxxd 6th November 2018, 02:18 PM

they've done plenty of concert docs in the past

Posted by: myxxd 6th November 2018, 02:36 PM

rihanna's last album flopped in uk only charted at #7 and that wembley date was part of that album tour. Westlife has had a record on wembley arena and probably don't want to tarnish it if they won't sell the stadium at fast rate like take that and adele at it will destroy their future concerts.

well they should really add more dates after the spice general sale on saturday. people are comparing now their third london date at o2 and spice wembley stadium both at the 15th of june next year

Posted by: Charis 6th November 2018, 02:42 PM

I am afraid from this competition... it could harm westlife's concert because Spice girls werent around that much and they dont seem they will be after that tour while westlife were active for like 15 years now and plan to stay for more... Also its a stadium concert, and not an arena tour...

well they're a girl band, westlife's boyband. both have common audience but also have different music fans. same with take that and westlife, have you seen their spotify pages on the fans also like tab? it seems that both have the least common fans. that's why a john shanks pop rock produced albums didn't worked for westlife. it's a healthy competition

anyway we still don't have any sightings of Mark's boyfriend! the new magazine cover link have gillian jodi and georgina but no mark's bf. I remember suddenly when Simon rejected the us against the world music video first time around because kevin was there

Posted by: myxxd 6th November 2018, 03:56 PM

new dates won't hurt them in my opinion charis just reviewed their ticket sales on ticketmaster and the two dublin and three glasgow belfast london dates each are all sold out. couple of tickets left on birmingham newcastle, manchester has hundreds left. uk has 60 m plus population and their trend of selling out the tickets fast and their concert dates are still as far as may 2019.

mark just confirmed on their glasgow radio interview only some of the tracks for the albumwere just finished recording.

nicky brought his friends to the supposed to be secc permanent stool fixtures because there's a boxing bout in the area but much to his surprise they are gone lmao

it was in christmas 2015 or 2016 shane and kian first talked about westlife again after years of not talking about it

Posted by: myxxd 8th November 2018, 04:05 PM

they added the songs have westlife vibe to it but 2018 and modern.

well I trust them about that, their musical choices than Boyzone who never had album track bangers such as Bad Girls, Hit You With the Real Thing, Still Here.

Posted by: myxxd 8th November 2018, 05:11 PM

hardcore fans are fuming they changed their opening night from 25 to 22. they can't book mark's birthday at the 28th because of the vamps they bought extortionate tickets plus hotel and transpo just to see them at the opening night. can't blame them but they should just be grateful that they will see them as many still don't have the opportunity to see them

Posted by: zeze88 8th November 2018, 06:03 PM

So true! I LOVE Poet's Heart for example.

But even in albums. For example, imagine if they released When I'm With You, its a midtempo pop/RnB song. Or any other song from Where We Are for that matter, its a crime only What About Now, the ONLY cover on the album, got the single release.
How about Closer instead of dated Safe? The boys wanted to release it but Simon said no.

they have a more interesting background story imho. 3/4 of them were schoolmates and theatre mates (that's why their bond are very solid) and was not picked one by one from an audition (1/4 Nicky was the only one recruited - ignoring brian lol). they were the first big boy band that became a quartet from a quintet that went on, how they struggled and successfully managed to escape from breaking up like their predecessors.

he supported Lionel Richie and was supposed to support Garth Brooks but the headliner cancelled his event. Mark supported Wet Wet Wet and Mariah. Kian supported Boyzone. maybe they are counting how many they will do front acts as solo. nothing wrong of being a front act if the main act is more senior to them. I personally want them to do opening act for backstreet boys on their or some of their us dates, for promotion as they are unknown there when we look at the billboard charts.

and checking twenty tour dates and elton's dates next year. there are two dates on the 20 tour that are vacant and available on elton's uk irish dates and one of them was the date that surfaced on a ticketing or concerts site, don't know if the link is available up to now but I've seen it.

Westlife did the same in their Farewell tour so i believe its not something extremely out of the ordinary for them.

In general selling 400k concert tickets in a country of like 8 million people is just unreal! Its like everyone has gone to your concert.. WOW...

Its a big shame for shane to do solo stuff while westlife are active.... Anyway let's hope that means it will keep them active for ever this way... They should already bring a single out they sold out a whole tour...

this january 19 gig, from what the article said, has got to be his biggest gig after westlife announcement and outside uk and ireland. I think they are testing the waters. I heard it will be held in a park on big acres. even if westlife have already announced their reunion, he still did wedding reception singing gigs on southeast asia

Perfect is basically a Westlife song, would have been a great comeback single.

There is no way on earth they will ever get another number 1 single. They will be lucky to go T40. They will really struggle - the charts have changed significantly since when they were popular and unless they get significant exposure through air play which I cannot see happening for a band of their age. They are also from a completely different generation to the youngsters who prodominateky stream music these days.

#1 is tough, but a Top 20 is certain, a top 10 even, assuming they will bring out a decent song.

Posted by: slowdown73 14th December 2018, 07:01 PM

I doubt they will even go T20. Look at Boyzone & Take That - neither have any success in singles chart anymore. They might have more luck on the album chart!

Only because they released CDs as well. Are Westlife doing those?

I really can't see anything for this beyond low top 40. They'll be top 5 on the singles sales chart but lack of streaming will knock them down considerably.

Is this gonna be self-referential to their 2000 song of a similar name?

Posted by: Bjork 8th January 2019, 01:33 PM

is this the ed sheeran song?

Posted by: gooddelta 8th January 2019, 02:18 PM

Yep, and produced by Steve Mac, who has worked with them forever anyway (and now works with everyone else in the industry too).

The lyrics according to the OCC include:

“I know that I’m punching way above, so lucky that we fell in love. You could have someone without a belly or temper, perfect teeth, hair growing where it’s meant to – you know my lips are all I can hold against you."

Classic Ed laugh.gif

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 8th January 2019, 02:18 PM

Yes it is the Ed song and judging by the very small clip, it is very Jess Glynne - All I Am-esque.. so pretty much Steve Mac on auto pilot.

Edit: What Rich just said lmao

Due to the comeback hype i think they will achieve a decent peak position.
After that, it wont be a huge hit.
They essentially will be an albums and tour act.

i believe they should have a plan, maybe its commercially released on thursday on radio and maybe spotify and go on sale the next day... Usually the singles are being released at midnight of friday? Because this one they mentioned something about thursday morning, like 8:30...

It will get to top 40 for sure, no need to worry about that, unless they mess up with the physical release and the streamings...

The album and tour are the big ones for this!! Just can't make out what this is going to sound like from the clip, sadly won't be as good as their classics though I reckon.

There hasn’t been a Top 200 singles chart since June 2017! Just a Top 100 since then. Obviously your point still stands in the sense that Out of Our Heads didn’t make the chart. It’s becoming increasingly harder for older artists like Take That to achieve a chart placement nowadays, even if their download sales are ok.

Hard to predict how a comeback Westlife single will do, but I’d be very surprised if they’re not severely let down by streaming.

Charis, quite a lot of songs are released on Thursdays! Also, is there actually a physical release forthcoming or is that not known yet?

I am nervous for them, just want the song to be good! Singles chart doesn't matter but I just hope the media don't put a spin on things. Been listening to their songs this morning....a lot of their b-sides are by favourite songs.

Jenny just announced they will have the first play and first Irish play of the single on 2fm tomorrow probably earlier than 0830. In UK, 0830 on most of Bauer, Hits and Wave FM radio stations. Universal Malaysia, Poland etc had promoted Hello My Love will premiere tomorrow as well

they just want to be back in the cycle again. I think they will aim for the US market again. remember it was opened up on their press conference last October and Nicky answered it will be easier for them to promote a concert today because of social media and Kian said there will be lots of firsts this time.

I can definitely understand Official Chart Company's Castle on the Hill comparison in the chorus, but I'd say Hello My Love has a more joyous vibe to it whereas Ed had a bit of a wistful feel to his song.

I don't think it's a particularly distinctive sounding song in general, although against their singles back catalogue it'll stand out as being considerably more of a foot tapper than most of them are!

A nice enough song, I can hear the Ed influence and the chorus melody is very Castle On The Hill indeed.

It should satisfy the fanbase and it has modern production while retaining 'very Westlife'. Quite pleasing that they didn't come back with an obvious big ballad, but no doubt Ed or Steve (or both) have written them a Perfect for the album.

In at No.2 on iTunes too...!

Hard to say but it's very unlikely to do much on streaming. Maybe a semi-decent first couple of days with the release impact followed by New Music Friday, but can't see it holding up much.

Could well be a big No.1 on iTunes, but a lot of those sales will come today, so it's a wasted opportunity for a more impactful debut really.

Indeed it was. Westlife (or anyone) would be incredibly fortunate to shift even a third of the 70,000 downloads that LadBaby sold though, big download sales are extremely rare these days.

That's true, a good headstart on iTunes will give it some visibility to compensate for the other bigger streaming artists probably being placed higher on New Music Friday tomorrow, however I do believe it would have flown to No.1 on iTunes with a big lead whatever day they'd released it.

There's a performance on The Graham Norton Show tomorrow which will help, and I'm sure they've got all sorts of promo lined up.

Also, it’s an estimation of what it might sell over an entire 24 hour period, not just the past few hours. And even then it’s overestimated.

It’s most certainly not sold 6,000 downloads in 5 hours wink.gif

I cannot deny it...this is actually a fantastic song. Not the sort of thing you'd expect them to come back with at all given their history but it works for them. It's going to be interesting to see how they perform in a market that was already moving away from them at their last single - which was only seven years ago - but I reckon this is probably going to be much bigger than people anticipated.

A BOP TBF. Get it lads x

Posted by: Klumzee 10th January 2019, 02:59 PM

This would've been a good Eurovision entry! I still can't quite seeing this being a hit - I'd imagine this will be played on Magic/Smooth/R2 until the end of time but I just can't see it doing anything on Spotify as it still sounds dated despite it being much more than I'd have expected from Westlife!

Do we know if they've filmed a video?

Posted by: myxxd 10th January 2019, 07:11 PM

yes Jenny said they filmed it on a desert on LA with hot air balloons. and several media reported something about it on December.

Posted by: pippa 10th January 2019, 07:34 PM

They will most likely have sold enough to enter the Top 100 tomorrow.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 10th January 2019, 07:37 PM

The OCC don't count Thursday sales I believe.

Posted by: gooddelta 10th January 2019, 07:38 PM

They count pure sales, just not streams of Thursday releases. But it would have had to have sold about 7,000 downloads today to chart which is a tall order.

Posted by: Rooney 10th January 2019, 10:39 PM

I quite like it, I agree with the Take That vibes. I'm getting major The Wanted vibes as well (well, their later stuff). I think this could do OK in streaming actually with the right promotion and playlist pushes..

Posted by: myxxd 11th January 2019, 06:44 AM

OCC's comparison to Bop Bop Baby and Uptown Girl is just wrong maybe just to have a recall for their old fans. The song is more of a faster version of Something Right, Difference in Me, Beautiful Tonight.

well, their fans like "dated" pop songs like Beautiful in White that was uploaded on Youtube in 2011 but only got 100m views last year. they can't shift to a different sound drastically they will lose fans

vevo uk tweeted yesterday: "It's only been 10 days but fairly confident that Hello My Love is song of the year." maybe promo with them coming up.

I just can't believe they will chart that high on itunes Chile, Ecuador #2, Brazil #5 and those European countries not familiar to them. #43 US Pop, #10 Japan Pop, #2 Mexico Pop, #162 Canada, #39 Canada Pop, #13 Saudi Arabia

Very similar to Beautiful tonight.. but this one its a lot stronger, it is an anthem anyone will be singing it in the concerts etc etc.

In any case, since last midnight the downloads are counted in the charts for next week, or i am wrong?

Posted by: Jay ☆ 11th January 2019, 08:54 AM

Yeah, every download since midnight counts for next Friday's chart (Fri 11th Jan to Thurs 17th Jan = Fri 18th Jan chart). Streams that occur from today until the 23:59:59 on Wed 16th Jan count. Streams that occur on Thurs 17th Jan won't count, because streaming services don't send the data to the OCC in time - OCC estimate it.

They should put a group version of Beautiful In White on the album, even if as a bonus track. When I heard it on Shane's last album I thought it sounded like a classic Westlife ballad. It would have been an easy UK No.1 in the early 00s.

It was only recorded in 2006, only track they recorded in Abbey Road Studios and rejected by Simon in 2007 maybe because Us Against the World, Something Right, and Beautiful in White have the same songwriters.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th January 2019, 05:19 AM

Hello My Love sold 5,081 downloads on Thursday! That's really good.

5,137 sales overall... so it actually managed 56 sales from streaming. This is definitely not data from Spotify, Amazon or Apple Music though because they're always a day behind sending their data to the OCC (which means that OCC will have considered Westlife to have achieved 0 streaming sales from those platforms). I assume the 56 streaming sales comes from Deezer and/or Tidal (or some other platform), one of them must share their data on time for the chart.

#100 in the official Top 100 singles chart sold 5,189, so Westlife only just missed out on charting yesterday by 52 sales! So if all the streams they achieved on Thursday were actually accounted for, they would definitely have charted... a slight shame!

It'll be very interesting to see how they hold up on iTunes this week and to see how many physicals they can sell! Also like Jonjo said, Westlife managing to enter at #144 on Spotify UK is actually a very good start, when you consider that it'll mostly be "curiosity streams". New Music Friday should see them remain Top 200 in today's Spotify update.

Yet I find it strange I believe Westlife have a strong core fanbase of like 100-200k people in the UK, if they just stream it once or twice a day would be enough to get the streaming points we need. Even if half of them download or buy the comeback single would be also enough... In any case I have the feeling the single might sell 5-10 k physical copies this week, if it is in the shops i really believe it.

Streaming is how most people listen to music, so the charts reflect this. (mostly)

What About Now
The sales split is an interesting reflection of its year of release, 2009: 79% of its total sales are digital downloads vs. 8% physical and 13% audio and video streams.

Looks like they were surprised as well. I thought back in 2009, physicals are still their driving force. I'm just sad for Safe and Lighthouse they were not supported like What About Now like the later years of ABBA single releases.

What about now is a different story because it was an already famous hit and was released from Westlife while it was still a world wide hit... No, because it went on sale in the morning on Thursday 10th January - so the 5,137 copies it sold up to 11:59pm counted towards the chart of Friday 11th January - but it didn't quite sell enough to enter the Top 100.

All the sales/streams they achieve from Friday 11th January to the end of Thursday 17th January will go towards its chart entry on Friday 18th January.

Ava Max at #1 and Mark Ronson at #2 in the sales chart had 7 full days to sell the number of downloads they managed. Westlife was only on sale for about 16 hours... it was impressive that they sold 5k so quickly, but Ava & Mark sold more (Ava - 11.5k, Mark - 8.2k).

Streaming is a different kettle of fish to sales, in that progress can be quite slow. If they're eventually added to more play lists it'll stand to climb higher on Spotify. To make it to #75 purely based on it being on New Music Friday (and at a not so high placement of 11th in that playlist) & people actively searching for it, is actually a very good start.

Plus you have to consider they've been away for years and streaming wasn't even a huge thing when they split, so that's not likely to be an area they excel in as an older act, regardless of their popularity.

They might have streaming fans already in UK because of the surprise entries of I Wanna Grow Old WIth You and I'll See You Again as one of their top most streamed songs which were not singles and became popular only around 2016 17 in my observation

I hear a lot of comments like that but honestly, the only obvious similarity to Castle on The Hill is at the end of the chorus when they go "its my angel and me". I don't find those two songs that similar aside from that part.

i hear it in the chorus most when they sing "i've been searching for someone like you", sounds like ed singing the start of "driving at ninety down.."

i hear the "its my angel and me" bit too and i think it sorta shows that he's just sorta recycled bits here and there and so as a whole becomes a bit of a 'yer ive heard that before' song which is never good

It's cause English ruined their chart, while it was one of the most exciting charts in the world....

FOr gods sake having a song on top for months just because it's being streamed is a joke....

I agree entirely. Streaming a song is not buying it. rolleyes.gif
