Two new topics opened for sales! I've split singles and albums up, and each thread has a little analysis post.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 20th January 2020, 11:50 AM

That was such an interesting read.

I rarely check the 1D thread so to see History as their second biggest seller was a shock to me! I was expecting one of Story Of My Life or Best Song Ever.

You and I is so underrated huh.gif

Some strong solo sales too what were also quite surprising! I guess I underestimate the streaming era still laugh.gif

Posted by: Rafael x 23rd January 2020, 10:50 PM

good!!

Posted by: Rafael x 24th January 2020, 05:11 PM

One Direction's Midnight Memories (single) has been certified as SILVER in the UK for over 200,000 units sold.
All of their 17 singles are certified;

Posted by: JosephStyles 7th February 2020, 06:49 PM

Adore You becomes the fifth 1D-related single to re-enter the top 10. It follows Steal My Girl, Perfect, PILLOWTALK and Just Hold On!

Posted by: Rafael x 8th February 2020, 12:15 PM

im pretty sure History and Strip That Down has hit 1 million now.

Posted by: JosephInSpace 8th February 2020, 01:01 PM

Yup I believe they have, though I'm not going to mark them as so until we've got any proper figures!

Updated for the last 2 weeks! Falling now upgraded to a proper single, and No Judgement also added.

Posted by: JosephInSpace 28th February 2020, 01:41 PM

I missed it when updating the thread. Easy mistake, no need to be rude

Posted by: JosephInSpace 5th March 2020, 05:59 PM

Updated - Adore You has now outsold Lights Up! It's also matched Lights Up on 12 top 40 weeks - the joint most for any Harry single, so it'll hold that record outright this coming week.

Posted by: JosephInSpace 7th March 2020, 08:25 PM

Updated - Adore You is now Harry's longest top 40 runner outright!

Posted by: JosephInSpace 14th March 2020, 01:25 PM

Adore You matches the top 40 weeks of I Don't Wanna Live Forever and Dusk Till Dawn. These are the solo tracks with the most weeks top 40:

1. 16 Strip That Down
2. 15 PILLOWTALK
2. 15 Slow Hands
4. 14 I Don't Wanna Live Forever
4. 14 Dusk Till Dawn
4. 14 Adore You
7. 13 Familiar
8. 12 Back to You
8. 12 For You
8. 12 Lights Up

Adore You has one more week before ACR, unless it increases, so unfortunately it won't quite top the list, but still VERY impressive!!

Posted by: JosephStyles 20th March 2020, 11:30 PM

Adore You is now joint 2nd for most top 40 weeks for a 1D solo single. It's avoided ACR again (!) so it should easily take the record for itself in 2 weeks' time!! biggrin.gif

No Judgement also becomes a top 40 hit this week, up to #32 - Niall's fifth top 40.

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th March 2020, 07:20 PM

Updated. Falling will go silver next week biggrin.gif Adore You now MATCHES Strip That Down's top 40 weeks, and will overtake next week to become the longest running 1D solo single!!

Posted by: JosephStyles 3rd April 2020, 02:29 PM

Impressive!!! Especially for Kiwi ohmy.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. 3rd April 2020, 02:48 PM

'Kiwi' is one of my favourites, pleased to see that!

Posted by: JosephStyles* 11th April 2020, 05:02 PM

Updated for the last 2 weeks. Amazingly, Adore You's still got at least 3 more weeks before it hits ACR. It's currently on 18 weeks top 40, What Makes You Beautiful had 20. It's basically guaranteed to become the overall longest-running 1D hit ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles* 18th April 2020, 04:12 PM

Updated. This Town is now platinum (600k)! Adore You's matched History's top 40 weeks.

Posted by: Rafael x 20th April 2020, 11:24 PM

The sales in the UK are really really low??

Its been 2 years since Strip That Down hit 948k and History is at 908k for 1 year and 2 months... the 1m mark will never come?

mad.gif

And congrats to Niall on his 2nd Platinum single. If TT is at 600k so Slow Hands is at 800k since its receiving more streams daily...

Posted by: JosephStyles* 20th April 2020, 11:39 PM

All that means is that we've not had any proper updates in that time. Strip That Down is certainly over 1m now and I expect History's not far off.

Posted by: Rafael x 21st April 2020, 01:31 PM

There's no way that Music Week has the info?

Posted by: JosephStyles* 21st April 2020, 03:37 PM

Not unless they reveal it in an article

Posted by: JosephStyles* 25th April 2020, 03:56 PM

Updated. Adore You's now matched WMYB as expected, it will take the record for most weeks top 40 next week biggrin.gif

Black and White has been added to Niall's singles. While Watermelon Sugar still isn't confirmed as a Harry single, it's now passed 300k. Lights Up is just a few hundred off going gold biggrin.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles* 2nd May 2020, 02:28 PM

Updated. Adore You takes the record for most top 40 weeks, and Lights Up has been certified gold.

Added Watermelon Sugar to the singles statistics now it's officially been sent to radio.

Posted by: Liam.k. 7th May 2020, 01:53 AM

The longevity of 'Adore You' is remarkable, especially compared to his other hits. I wonder what it was in particular that has kept it going so long, or has it just been lucky to avoid ACR at the right times?

'Falling' is having a nice Top 40 run too, should achieve a higher sale total than 'Lights Up' with some ease.

Posted by: JosephStyles 7th May 2020, 02:09 AM

It's definitely had a stroke of luck to avoid ACR but nevertheless, I'm amazed it's ended up being the longest-running 1D top 40 hit! Would NEVER have called that, even without considering we're in the ACR era. It will eventually become his biggest seller overall, which is pretty remarkable ohmy.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th May 2020, 07:04 PM

Updated! Adore You should be platinum next week biggrin.gif It's swerved ACR again so it should extend its top 40 record by yet another 3 weeks *.*

Posted by: JosephStyles 15th May 2020, 06:31 PM

Updated. Adore You's platinum, and had an increase in streams today so it's still got 3 more weeks before ACR laugh.gif Falling overtakes Lights Up to become Harry's second longest runner, and overtakes Watermelon Sugar to become his fourth biggest seller.

Posted by: JosephStyles 23rd May 2020, 03:45 PM

Updated. Watermelon Sugar's back in the top 40 already at #35! It's the 9th week it's spent in the top 40. Harry's top 40 weeks:

24 Adore You *
14 Falling *
12 Lights Up
10 Sign of the Times
09 Watermelon Sugar *

Adore You increased AGAIN so has another 3 weeks before ACR laugh.gif Falling on the other hand is off to ACR now, so this is likely to be its last top 40 week. Nevertheless, 14 weeks is insane!! Crazy to think as well that in a couple of weeks, Sign of the Times will be Harry's shortest-running hit ohmy.gif who'd have called that?

Also I expect it's only going to take a couple of weeks for Adore You to overtake the last known figure for Sign of the Times! That's not a very recent figure but that must put it really close to overtaking its actual figure. I wish we had an update!

Posted by: JosephStyles 31st May 2020, 05:48 PM

Updated! Adore You's one week off overtaking SOTT's last known total now. Watermelon Sugar is #17 in today's first look so we could be looking at a new peak next week!

Posted by: JosephStyles 8th June 2020, 01:17 PM

Updated! A few things this week:

- Adore You has now outsold Sign of the Times' last known total. It'll probably take another couple of weeks at least for it to overtake what Sign of the Times is actually on but it's quite safe to say that Adore You's only a matter of time away from being his biggest seller.

- Watermelon Sugar has a new peak of #16. It should go gold next week.

- Watermelon Sugar's re-overtaken Falling's total sales. Falling should be gold within two weeks.

- Watermelon Sugar spending its 11th week top 40 means that Sign of the Times is now Harry's shortest-running top 40 hit....!!

Well, Adore You will need at least another 300k sales to match Sign of the Times. Sott is close to 1 million sales in the UK. Can't wait when they finally announce it officially.

Watermelon Sugar's gold, Falling will make it next week. Watermelon's now outsold the last known total for Lights Up - it won't have actually outsold it yet but it won't be long now until we can safely say it has. Two weeks max I'd say?

Aside: I've found Falling's artwork at last! *.*

Finally some confirmation that 'Strip That Down' is a million seller! laugh.gif

Posted by: Rafael x 19th June 2020, 03:58 PM

948k in April 2018, so he added ~250k in 2 years.

Maybe Slow Hands is at 1m too and SOTT at 850-900k

cheer.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. 19th June 2020, 05:53 PM

^ Agreed, I think 'Slow Hands' is more or less a million seller too by now.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 19th June 2020, 06:04 PM

1 million for slow hands is brill, love the song.

Posted by: Cara 20th June 2020, 04:25 AM

SOTT was (and still is) selling better than Strip That Down and Slow Hands in these 2 years. So it is more than 900k for sure. You underestimate it.

Posted by: JosephStyles 23rd June 2020, 06:39 PM

Updated! Added Liam's new certification, and Falling's gone gold too. That means it's outsold the last known total we have for Lights Up - bear in mind Lights Up will be ahead still but I can only go by the totals I know, so the analysis post has Falling ahead. Nevertheless, it's clear Lights Up will soon be the lowest selling Fine Line single...!

Adore You will pass 700k next week. Sadly its 27-week run in the top 40 ended this week as it hit ACR. Watermelon Sugar climbs to #11 and is set for top 10 this coming week, while overtaking Lights Up's top 40 weeks (it now has 13).

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th June 2020, 11:58 PM

Updated! Another exciting week in Harry chart news! Watermelon Sugar is of course the big story of the week, becoming Harry's fourth solo top 10. This pushes him into outright first place for most solo top 10s:

04 Harry
03 Zayn
02 Liam / Louis / Niall

It's already matched Adore You's peak, too. It's also matched Falling's top 40 weeks. It's certain at this point to become the 2nd longest-running solo top 40 hit:

27 Adore You
16 Strip That Down
15 PILLOWTALK
15 Slow Hands
14 I Don't Wanna Live Forever
14 Dusk Till Dawn
14 Falling
14 Watermelon Sugar *
13 Familiar
12 Back to You
12 For You
12 Lights Up
11 Just Hold On
10 Sign of the Times

Adore You itself has passed 700k sales.

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th July 2020, 05:28 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar hits a new peak of #6, and will cross 500k next week. Not much else to report on this week!

QUOTE(JosephStyles @ Jul 4 2020, 05:28 PM) *

'Adore You' is now the longest charting solo single in the top 100. 30 weeks.

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th July 2020, 09:26 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar has crossed 500k and will be platinum in just a few weeks. It's also hit 16 weeks top 40, overtaking PILLOWTALK and Slow Hands, and matching Strip That Down to be the second longest running solo single. It's surely guaranteed to overtake the 20 weeks of WMYB at this point to become the second longest running 1D single!

From https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/ten-years-of-one-direction-10-chart-facts-you-probably-didnt-know-about-one-of-the-uks-most-loved-boybands__30301/:

QUOTE
2. Three One Direction songs have achieved over 1 million chart sales in the UK.
Based on sales and streams combined, they are:

What Makes You Beautiful: 1.43m
History: 1.04m
Story Of My Life: 1m

QUOTE
9. One Direction’s biggest non-single is a track that probably should have been a single.
It’s They Don’t Know About Us, a tale about secret love, from their Take Me Home album (179,000 chart sales).

QUOTE
10. One Direction’s least popular track in the UK is… justified.
Based on sales and streams, is Everything About You from their Up All Night album. Their worst-performing proper single is Midnight Memories (220,000 chart sales).

Posted by: JosephStyles 23rd July 2020, 01:03 PM

Thanks Liam! Woop for those updates totals cheer.gif I didn't get my usual sales data for the current chart this week so I'll update the entire thread for the past 2 weeks + this new info over this weekend!

33 weeks have passed since we got the total of 1,342,127 for What Makes You Beautiful, and it's added roughly 88k. That means it sells around 2.7k a week. It'll go 3x platinum in March 2023 at this rate!

75 weeks have passed since the 907,913 total for History. It's added 132k roughly since then, on average 1.8k a week. It'll reach 2x plat in September 2023 at this rate.

Can't really say for Story of My Life, its last total of 700k comes from 2014...!

Midnight Memories passed 200k in January 2020. 25 weeks have passed since its certification and it's added 20k, meaning it adds 800 a week. It'll go gold in November 2024 *_*

Posted by: JosephStyles 24th July 2020, 06:58 PM

Updated for the past 2 weeks! Who's ready for a mega info post x

Watermelon Sugar has reached the top 5. It's the fifth longest-running 1D top 40 hit, and is all-but-guaranteed 2nd place.

I've included all the new sales above, and with confirmation that Midnight Memories is the lowest 1D seller on 220k, I've upgraded the sales for Gotta Be You and You & I to be 220k as a minimum too - they're likely above that of course!

PILLOWTALK was certified 2x plat on 30th August 2019. It's sold 61k in that time and 42 weeks have elapsed between then and mid-June. That means it sells just under 1.5k a week. June 2027 is when it's looking to go 3x plat...!

Slow Hands has sold 305.4k in ~116 weeks since April 2018, meaning it does about 2.6k a week! It'll hit 2x plat in September 2021.

Dusk Till Dawn has sold 336k in ~112 weeks (though that was a rounded figure so may be wrong), therefore doing 3k a week (which seems unusually high compared to PILLOWTALK, though Dusk does do better on Spotify). August 2021 for 2x plat.

Sign of the Times has sold 322k in ~119 weeks, so about 2.7k a week though I suspect it was doing lower than that until the Fine Line era began and is now selling at a higher rate. Nevertheless, using that figure, it's going to cross 1 million this October, and go 2x plat in March 2022.

I Don't Wanna Live Forever has sold 288.3k in ~135 weeks, so about 2.1k a week. January 2021 for 1 million, November 2022 for 2x plat.

The last total for Little Things is from 2014 so not much use for analysis, but it's selling faster than Best Song Ever and Steal My Girl.

Drag Me Down has also leapfrogged Best Song Ever and Steal My Girl, selling 302k in ~203 weeks, meaning about 1.5k is sold a week. 1m will be passed in October 2021, and 2x plat in May 2024.

Steal My Girl has sold 92.3k in the past 72 weeks, meaning 1.3k a week. January 2023 for 1m, January 2026 for 2x plat.

Perfect has overtaken Best Song Ever, adding 162k in ~160 weeks, so just over 1k a week. 1m in February 2025, December 2028 for 2x plat.

We had a Best Song Ever update last February, adding 102.4k in the 72 weeks since then, meaning 1.4k a week (so by the looks of things, it's closing the gap once again on Perfect which had overtaken it since the last update we got for that). January 2024 for 1m, October 2026 for 2x plat.

Night Changes got certified platinum 22 weeks before the update, selling 37k in that time, so 1.7k a week! August 2024 for 1m, December 2026 for 2x plat.

Similarly, For You went platinum in February, so in 19 weeks, it's sold 25k - 1.3k a week. Feb 2026 for 1m, January 2029 for 2x plat.

This Town went plat in April, selling 19k in 10 weeks so 1.9k a week. June 2025 for 1m, June 2027 for 2x plat.

One Way or Another is a VERY slow trickle seller. No full estimate as its old figure is from 2014, but only 56k added in almost 6 years! sad.gif On the bright side, it's not that far off platinum now, hopefully it'll make it there before long.

Familiar has sold 163k in ~88 weeks, averaging 1.9k a week. December 2020 for platinum!

Thanks Joseph a v interesting read!

And some stabs in the dark on the rest. These are GUESSES and not really based on many facts, just comparisons to the songs around them and their increases.

Wouldn't be surprised if One Thing is nearing silver and Live While We're Young is nearing platinum at this point, they got their last certs quite a while ago and even with lesser increases than Little Things and Story of My Life, they'd be pretty close to their next certification. Kiss You could well be nearing platinum before long but I suspect it's not quite there yet, it took longer to reach gold than LWWY. I'm quite surprised it wasn't on more than 563k in the June update actually!

You & I and Gotta Be You are obviously over 220k, there's not a lot to go off on those but I expect You & I is over 300k at least.

I feel like it can't be too long before Two Ghosts goes silver? Kiwi and Sweet Creature both made it, and I expect Harry's entire debut album is streaming quite well on the whole, so surely a silver cert for Two Ghosts isn't that far away.

Polaroid could well go platinum within a year or so? thinking.gif

Louis is pretty much an unknown entity with Just Hold On overlooked from the above list, but it didn't pass 600k that long ago anyway. Back to You is more of an unknown but it must be comfortably over 500k.

Could imagine Too Much to Ask nearing gold before long for Niall? I'm really interested to see where On the Loose is at actually...! We still only have a week 1 sales figure for that.

LIKE I WOULD can't be far off gold, same for Cruel actually. Still Got Time should be over 500k.

thanks for all work. wub.gif

btw, you forgot tp update WMYB to 1.43m on first page

Posted by: Jay Something 25th July 2020, 08:06 PM

I didn't realise Familiar had done well to the extent of coming close to platinum ohmy.gif

I bet if the general public were asked to name the 3 members of One Direction that had a million chart seller, most would assume Harry was one of them! Won't be long until he joins Zayn, Liam and Niall, of course.

Watermelon Sugar platinum

Posted by: JosephStyles 31st July 2020, 03:50 PM

Fabulous news!!

Posted by: JosephStyles 3rd August 2020, 02:46 AM

Updated! With a sixth week in the top 10, Watermelon Sugar passes Adore You's tally. It's just one week shy of Sign of the Times!

Watermelon Sugar's tied History's 19 weeks top 40! It's also Harry's third platinum single.

We also have a new tally for What Makes You Beautiful! It was on 1,418,000 in mid June, so in the ~7 weeks since then, it's sold 22,300 to make it to 1,440,300. That's 3.2k a week on average, though if we deduct the 5.7k it sold this week as it's a higher than usual tally thanks to the anniversary, that'd be 2.8k a week, which is more in line with what I posted on the previous page.

Posted by: JosephStyles 9th August 2020, 04:28 PM

Updated! Falling sadly vacates the top 100, but we have a new peak for Watermelon Sugar - it's the first group or solo single to peak at #4 as things stand!

Watermelon Sugar also matches Sign of the Times' top 10 weeks, so it's guaranteed to become Harry's longest runner in the top 10. It's also matched WMYB's top 40 weeks, so it's now joint second only behind Adore You. It'll take 2nd place outright very easily of course - it's pretty much guaranteed to get a minimum of 23 before ACR (and at this rate, it'd stay top 40 on ACR too), so Adore You's record isn't safe!

Posted by: JosephStyles 23rd August 2020, 04:27 PM

Updated for the past 2 weeks. Watermelon Sugar's passed 700k, and with 4 weeks in the top 5, it's become his longest-running top 5 hit. As for top 10 weeks, it's Harry's outright longest, and the joint third-longest running 1D top 10 hit.

Most Top 10 Weeks

11 Dusk Till Dawn
10 Story of My Life
09 Strip That Down
09 Watermelon Sugar *

It also takes second place for most top 40 weeks out of all 1D hits too.

Most Top 40 Weeks

27 Adore You
22 Watermelon Sugar *

At least 2 more weeks before it goes to ACR, so I think it can tie Dusk Till Dawn's top 10 weeks but will need to increase (even a slight amount) either this week or next if it wants to take the record. As for top 40 weeks, even going to ACR won't push it out of the top 40 yet, so lasting 6 more weeks to take the outright record doesn't seem impossible at all!

Elsewhere, Adore You's over 800k and Falling will pass 500k next week.

Strip That Down having the 3rd highest total of weeks in the top 10 is a hate crime

Posted by: JosephStyles 29th August 2020, 06:38 PM

Updated. Watermelon Sugar scores a 10th week top 10, bringing it tied with Story of My Life in second place for most weeks top 10. One more to tie Dusk Till Dawn in first - and incidentally, at this rate, it only has one more week on SCR too, so the record looks unlikely.

It's on week 23 in the top 40 though, just 4 more to match Adore You - even on ACR that still feels achievable!

Falling's passed 500k as well this week.

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th September 2020, 03:50 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar matches Dusk Till Dawn's record for top 10 weeks but it's off to ACR now so it won't be taking the outright record sadly. It's just 3 weeks off matching Adore You's top 40 weeks record though, so that's still in sight!

Watermelon Sugar should overtake Adore You's total within weeks too!

Posted by: JosephStyles 11th September 2020, 02:59 PM

ohmy.gif!! That's amazing!

Posted by: JosephStyles 14th September 2020, 04:04 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar ends its top 10 run now it's on ACR of course but still logs a 25th week top 40, now only 2 weeks behind Adore You's 27.

Watermelon Sugar is over 800k, and is looking to overtake Adore You's total sales potentially as soon as next week, or at the latest a week later.

Posted by: JosephStyles 19th September 2020, 08:45 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar has now outsold Adore You, which has sadly ended its top 100 run after a huge 40 weeks.

Looking almost nailed on now that Watermelon will take the top 40 weeks record! biggrin.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th September 2020, 11:21 AM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar matches Adore You's 27 weeks top 40, will definitely claim the record next week biggrin.gif

Falling re-enters the top 100 as well this week, a rare occasion of it being higher than Adore You.

Posted by: JosephStyles 3rd October 2020, 06:30 PM

Updated! It's finally happened, Watermelon Sugar is the longest-running One Direction-related top 40 hit. It rises one place to spend its 28th week top 40 at #28 magic.gif next week it'll cross 900k too!

Posted by: JosephStyles 12th October 2020, 04:24 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar is now over 900k, will be the first 1D single to hit 30 weeks top 40 this week biggrin.gif

Also added Zayn's Better which I forgot to include last week! His first charting song in over a year.

Posted by: JosephStyles 14th October 2020, 04:27 PM

Also forgot to add that Back to You has gone platinum! That's 142 weeks to sell 200k, so it manages about 1.4k a week. Here's where it slots in among some other predictions I made before!

Will post a full update this weekend but Music Week have posted an article with some sales!!

QUOTE
Harry Styles has reached another UK chart milestone as Fine Line turns platinum.

A total of 3,771 sales this week brings the album’s tally to 300,634, according to the Official Charts Company. Of this week’s total, 3,034 came from streams, with 681 physical units sold and 56 downloads

Fine Line followed the singer’s self-titled No.1 debut album from 2017, and peaked at No.3 upon release last December.

Back then, in a special cover story, Styles told us the album had him feeling “The most excited I’ve ever been”. Now, Fine Line has eclipsed the sales figure of its predecessor, which isn’t far behind on 298,653.

Harry Styles was due to tour the world this year, and with dates postponed Columbia – which scooped the Artist Marketing Campaign trophy at the Music Week Awards 2020 – leant on the album’s singles to boost the campaign.

Watermelon Sugar, a mainstay on the UK airplay chart, has a singles chart peak of No.4 and a sales figure of 936,260. Its video has 129 million views on YouTube.

Styles has recently been on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where he is reportedly filming the video for the record’s next single, strongly rumoured to be Fine Line’s opening track Golden. Styles recently announced the release of a special edition Fine Line vinyl box set.

Also from the record, Adore You peaked at No.7 and has 874,548 sales. Falling hit No.15 and has 567,550, while intro track Lights Up has 501,181.

Music Week recently caught up with team Columbia on what’s next for Styles, read that interview here. Click here to revisit our cover story, where Styles talks about the album alongside Sony Music Group CEO Rob Stringer and Full Stop Management's Jeffrey Azoff.

First figure we've had for Lights Up in a while! Looks like it'll make platinum in the not too distant future biggrin.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th October 2020, 04:05 PM

Updated! Lights Up took 24 weeks to sell ~100k. Another 24 weeks takes us to early April, for its platinum certification!

Watermelon Sugar spends a 30th week top 40 too cheer.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 24th October 2020, 03:30 PM

Updated! Not much to say this week, business as usual for the Harry singles, Watermelon Sugar now just a few weeks away from one million.

Posted by: JosephStyles 1st November 2020, 02:44 PM

Updated! Golden debuts at #44 this week, its sales just over 152,000 in total.

Watermelon Sugar's overtaken the last known total for Sign of the Times, though I expect the latter is now a "millionaire" but I don't have a figure to confirm that!

Posted by: JosephStyles 2nd November 2020, 05:08 PM

Thanks to the brilliant @https://twitter.com/TheHSCharts on Twitter (go follow them guys!), I've been directed to a Music Week article from 26th October which contains some Harry sales *.*

QUOTE
Harry Styles’ debut album has turned platinum in the UK, weeks after its follow-up Fine Line passed the same milestone.

Harry Styles was released in 2017 on Columbia, marking the start of the One Direction star’s solo career. Music Week broke the news that Fine Line went platinum earlier this month, and his debut has now followed suit.

It comes amidst a flurry of activity for Styles, who is trending on Twitter thanks to today’s release of the video for Fine Line opener Golden, directed by Ben and Gabe Turner and filmed on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Styles' debut now has 300,216 sales in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company. Its biggest single, Sign Of The Times, has 1,036,700 sales and is the singer’s first million-seller in the UK. Sweet Creature has 343,008, Kiwi has 255,992 and Two Ghosts has 198,256.

Styles is inching towards a million sales for Watermelon Sugar, his second-biggest selling UK single. The Fine Line track has 955,647 sales.

Golden is now expected to surge following the video’s release. Fans had been waiting, and 1,034,092 were tuning in live on YouTube as the premiere came to a close.

Back in 2019, when Styles starred on the cover of Music Week, he told us that Fine Line was his most honest work yet.

“You can write as honestly as you want and then only at the end do you have to decide if something is too much or if you feel comfortable saying it,” he said. “By the time you get to the end, I never want to pull it back or dilute it or anything. I’m proud of the album.”

Read about the making of Fine Line in our interview with star songwriter Tom Hull here. Click here to revisit our cover story, where Styles talks about the album alongside Sony Music Group CEO Rob Stringer and Full Stop Management's Jeffrey Azoff.

So this isn't up to the most recent chart, but the chart before that. Two Ghosts hasn't gone silver yet so its weekly sales must be <1,744, but it'll probably be there before long!

The last Sign of the Times total was 971,000 as of mid-June this year. ~19 weeks have elapsed since then, meaning it has sold about 3458 copies a week! About 58 weeks until it does double platinum, which will take us to December 2021 biggrin.gif

Sweet Creature went silver on 8th Feb 2019, meaning it's selling ~1589 copies a week. It'll go gold in July 2021, and platinum in December 2023.

Kiwi went silver only on 3rd April 2020, giving it a weekly total of ~1866, meaning it's closing in on Sweet Creature slowly but surely. It should go gold in May 2022, and platinum in May 2024.

Two Ghosts, well, this is the first total we've had for it since June 2017 laugh.gif I'll provide an estimate when it goes silver.

‘They Don’t Know About Us’ is Silver! Seems an unusual first album track of Take Me Home to be certified given it is at the end of the album and doesn’t follow a single. Is it a fan fave?

Yes, they never performed this track. We're pissed... cry.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 10th November 2020, 09:03 PM

Brilliant!! It is a fan fave, yes, and I assume Spotify playlists have helped it somewhat!

Two Ghosts is silver now too. meaning it sells less than 1743 a week but, on average, at least 872. Not very specific but I assume it's towards the middle of that section judging by the rate Sweet Creature sells at, so if it's roughly 1.3k, October 2023 is when we can expect gold. That's an incredibly rough figure though...!

Updated! Golden climbs to #36, and the last three Harry singles all hit a new landmark: Adore You 900k, Falling 600k (and therefore platinum) and excitingly, Watermelon Sugar 1 million! biggrin.gif

Updated! Golden up to #27, and it'll cross 200k next week.

Watermelon Sugar's outsold the last Sign of the Times total, won't be his top seller yet but it's not going to be far off!

OWOA = huge

'One Way or Another' is averaging just under 600 copies a week, going by the last update in June.

Thrilled OWOA is finally at platinum! It sells veeeery slowly though - slower than Midnight Memories drama.gif

Posted by: JosephCarey 5th December 2020, 04:50 PM

Updated! Golden's progress has been halted by Christmas songs so it dips out of the top 40 for now, but at least it's officially silver. For the first time, every Harry single is officially certified!

Naughty List now enters at #58. Live Forever and Midnight are the only Liam singles not to chart.

560 copies a week on average for One Way or Another. At that rate, we're looking at August 2034 for when it crosses the 1 million mark and June 2041 for 2x platinum tearsmile.gif It's a slower seller than even Midnight Memories...!

Updated forecast of future certifications:

Updated! Sadly Xmas songs are having a negative impact on Harry, as Golden could be looking to hit ACR next week, just as the Xmas songs will fade away and it'd have a chance of repeaking. Watermelon Sugar also drops out of the top 100 but it'll be back soon!

With the Lights Up total Liam posted, it's sold 22,017 in 7 weeks, averaging 3145 a week. June 2021 for its platinum cert, November 2023 for 1 million!

Liam's up to a new peak of #52 with Naughty List, putting it above the last known total for All I Want (For Christmas), which is a year old tbf.

Updated for the last few weeks with new peaks for Naughty List and Golden! Sadly Treat People With Kindness misses out on a top 100 position due to the 3-track rule, just 18 sales behind Falling sad.gif sad.gif It would have been #80! Nonetheless, we have a total for it.

You & I has been certified gold! ohmy.gif It's overtaken One Thing, so that's surely not far off either? Hopefully this also means Kiss You and Live While We're Young are inching their way to platinum...

Updated! Another week top 40 for Golden. Adore You's inching its way to 1m sales, just 30k left to go - should take ~5 weeks or so at this stage!

Vibez debuts at #50, Zayn's highest charting hit since Let You though it actually sold less than Better did in week 1.

Posted by: JosephStyles 23rd January 2021, 04:25 PM

Updated! Vibez nabs a second week top 100. Not much else going on this week, Falling and Golden will cross 700k and 300k respectively in a couple of weeks' time but that's about it for now!

Posted by: JosephStyles 30th January 2021, 07:40 PM

Updated! Golden will easily pass 300k next week. It's got just one more week before ACR (again) most likely.

Updated! Falling crosses 700k and Golden 300k cheer.gif Watermelon Sugar rebounds to #44 as loads of its physicals have finally shipped. Adore You will cross 1m in two weeks max!

Definitely would've expected a Familiar platinum cert by now, seems like it's not selling as much as expected each week.

Posted by: JosephStyles 13th February 2021, 02:57 PM

Updated! Watermelon Sugar crept back into the top 40 thanks to more physicals being shipped this week - there's still one vinyl format of mine that has yet to ship so maybe another boost down the line? It'll cross the 2x Plat mark within a couple of weeks nonetheless!

Adore You meanwhile is tantalisingly close to 1m, it'll get there within the next week with ease biggrin.gif

The award for Best Pop Solo Performance is Styles’ first Grammy, and there’s a sense that this moment had been coming for the singer, not to mention the ubiquitous Watermelon Sugar.

The track has 1,231,583 sales to date according to the Official Charts Company. A total of 1,104,219,723 Spotify streams and 198 million YouTube views show just how huge it has become. It has streaked ahead of his debut single Sign Of The Times (1,111,176) as his biggest in the UK. Adore You, his third million-seller, isn’t far behind on 1,024,195. Fine Line has moved 410,832 copies.

At last, that one's been a LONG time coming! Will do a more accurate estimation of its weekly sales over the weekend to see how fast it's really been selling.

Posted by: JosephStyles 19th June 2021, 04:22 PM

Our Song reaches the top 20 this week at #18, becoming Niall's outright third highest peaker and his first top 20 hit in four years! ohmy.gif Sadly What a Time is out of the chart and I never got sales for last week so no new total for that.

Watermelon Sugar crosses 1.4m and has spent another 2 weeks in the top 40, with it still being guaranteed at least 3 more weeks before ACR beckons again *_* at this rate, it's really not far behind the last total we had for What Makes You Beautiful from last August. Of course, WMYB will be higher than 1,440,300 now, but Watermelon Sugar is hot on its heels and is set to overtake really quite soon.

As for Familiar, its last total was 563,000 in mid-June 2020. That's pretty much exactly a year ago, and it's taken a whole 6 months longer than I thought to go platinum...! In 53 weeks, it's sold 37,000, so roughly 698 copies a week. Quite a weak trickle seller unfortunately. The next milestone would of course be 1m, but that's not gonna happen for exactly 11 years - June 2032 laugh.gif tearsmile.gif

One Direction - Little Things
Released: 2012
Chart sales: 1.05 million
Ed Sheeran's first Top 10 single writing for another act was a biggie - Little Things was only the second Ed-penned track not recorded by him, and was taken all the way to the Official Chart top spot by One Direction. The much-publicised penning did a lot for Ed's career (and 1D's) and resulted in 542,000 downloads and 59.3 million streams to date.

After an extra 5 weeks in the top 40, Watermelon Sugar is back off to ACR next week! cry.gif It's now ahead of the last known total for WMYB, but of course it won't have overtaken quiiiite yet.

re. Little Things, I didn't have a specific estimate for when it would hit 1m but it's (VERY roughly) sold 141,000 in 13 months / 56 weeks. That's 2,500-ish a week. Though Drag Me Down wasn't far behind on the last update, that seemed to be selling at a much slower rate, and I'd anticipated it would cross 1m in October this year so there could be a bit of a wait for that one still.

I mean to sell 270k in 6 years is certainly more than it ever would have done pre-streaming and is more than most acts can "sell." Comparison being Emma's what took you so long was on 240k on initial release and is still not at 300k yet over 20 years later.

While I rolled my eyes a bit at it going "gold" I'm kind of pleased as its one of the few group songs I do really like. wub.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 15th August 2021, 03:33 PM

It's all relative to be fair - 1D were around just as streaming was taking off and their initial young fanbase are now the people who primarily use streaming services. Not to mention they had huge international success, accelerated by social media, and many Spotify playlists are geared towards the US, hence why a song like One Thing can add a lot more than Emma Bunton's solo music, considering it was actually a reasonable hit over there.

Relatively speaking, One Thing is selling rather slowly - most other 1D singles are selling at a much faster pace!

Updated for the past 2 weeks. With SOTT and Dusk Till Dawn crossing 2x plat, I thought it might be a good idea to look at the top 10 biggest selling solo singles. Most recent sales figures are listed and the date they come from is in square brackets.

01 1,541,400 Watermelon Sugar [16/09/2021]
02 1,261,000 PILLOWTALK [06/2020]
03 1,201,000 Strip That Down [06/2020]
04 1,200,000 Slow Hands [02/09/2021]
05 1,200,000 Sign of the Times [09/09/2021]
06 1,200,000 Dusk Till Dawn [09/09/2021]
07 1,080,100 Adore You [20/05/2021]
08 0,948,000 I Don't Wanna Live Forever [06/2020]
09 0,844,800 Falling [01/07/2021]
10 0,625,000 For You [06/2020]

Thanks for the sales update, really cant see any future single toppling watermelon sugar from number 1 in their solo releases. Shame it never went number 1 for Harry, ideally slow hands will overtake strip that down and pillowtalk.

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th October 2021, 01:40 PM

I'd say it's more likely that Sign of the Times will overtake them all at some point! (Watermelon Sugar aside of course)

I'm sure DMD has crossed 1.1m but there's no updates.

Great news!! That means it's overtaken History to be their 2nd biggest hit ohmy.gif (though History's 2x plat can't be far off)

As far as Drag Me Down goes, I'd estimated that would've passed 1m this month. I'm not sure I quite see it being as high as 1.1m just yet!

Posted by: JosephStyles 30th October 2021, 03:30 PM

To expand on the Story of My Life figure, it's sold 200,000 in the last 66 weeks. That's an average of 3030 sales a week (very roughly speaking). At this rate, 3x platinum will be in August 2025 magic.gif

Elsewhere, Watermelon Sugar re-enters the top 100 thanks to Strictly *.* It'll cross 1.6m next week!

Too Much to Ask went silver on 30th March 2018. In 192 weeks, it's sold 200,000, so ~1041 copies a week. August 2025 for platinum at that rate, not too bad for a song that didn't feel huge at the time.

It's also Niall's 4th biggest seller still, for the time being, but Our Song will overtake before long.

Fine Line peaked at No.2 in the UK albums chart and has sold 569,921 copies since its release in December 2019, according to the Official Charts Company. In that time, it has become a mainstay in the UK charts. Its biggest-selling track is Watermelon Sugar (1,745,260 sales), while Adore You has 1,262,931 sales and Falling has 1,036,258. Sign Of The Times, from the star’s debut album, is his other million-seller in the UK, with 1,288,868 sales.

Updated! Lots of new Harry info this week. Obviously As It Was debuted at #1 on sales of 94,140 and Watermelon Sugar re-entered the top 100 (it was SO close to another ACR reset haha). That and SOTT have new totals courtesy of Music Week, and there are new rounded figures for Falling, Adore You and Golden (the latter has outsold the last known total of 600k for Lights Up, though that was last summer so Lights Up will still be ahead for the time being. It's obviously selling less at a weekly rate than Golden though).

Nothing for TPWK I'm afraid, I wish I knew a more up-to-date figure for it! I assume it is over 100k though, especially with a chunk of the Fine Line album tracks now over 200k. It'll go silver eventually but one of the last on the album to get there I sadly expect.

293,789 for As It Was so far in its 4 weeks at #1! The first 1D-related chart-topper to spend more than a week at the top.

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th May 2022, 07:18 PM

Updated! Lots of info over the past week so a quick summary:

1,844,200 Watermelon Sugar
1,330,000 Sign of the Times [OCC article]
1,323,000 Adore You
1,099,500 Falling
670,000 Lights Up [OCC article]
649,600 Golden
560,639 As It Was [8 weeks at #1]
52,214 Late Night Talking [new at #2]
45,690 Music for a Sushi Restaurant [new at #3]
42,881 Matilda [starred out]
36,736 Little Freak
35,160 Grapejuice
34,450 Daylight
31,135 Cinema
30,261 Satellite
29,937 Keep Driving
29,779 Daydreaming
28,941 Love of My Life
26,188 Boyfriends

All of Harry's House would've charted in the top 17 without the three-track rule this week. He's become the third artist to have 3 songs in the top 3, following Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran.

Adore You will overtake Sign of the Times before long, and Golden's well on its way to leapfrogging Lights Up (but good to have a new total for that!).

Finally given this an update! As It Was has been top 10 (and top 3 in fact) for 13 weeks - more than any 1D related song, the previous record holders being Dusk Till Dawn and Watermelon Sugar on 11 weeks each.

Late Night Talking has spent 6 weeks top 10, the fourth most of any Harry song (still yet to be confirmed as the 2nd single in the UK but surely only a matter of time).

Plenty of sales figures (including an update on every Harry's House track) from a couple of weeks ago.

Posted by: Liam.k. 7th July 2022, 08:05 AM

'As It Was' sales (OCC):

QUOTE
The ‘80s-influenced track streaks ahead of the competition with over 855,000 combined chart units for the year-to-date so far, driven by a huge 95 million streams. As It Was is also the most physically purchased (11,000 units) and digitally downloaded (33,000 units) song of the year so far in the UK.
'Harry's House' album track sales (Music Week):
QUOTE
Tracks from Harry’s House have not had enough time to make an impact on the year-to-date rankings. But three of them have made the Top 50 for Q2, including Late Night Talking (No.28, 201,493), Music For A Sushi Restaurant (No.33, 176,535) and Matilda (No.50, 141,331).

From this week's sales report:

QUOTE
Easing 2-3 on its 17th consecutive appearance in the top three, As It Was slips below 40,000 sales for the first time, but with consumption of 39,067 units in the week the Harry Styles track is the first 2022 release to achieve a million sales. Ending the week on 1,033,448 units, it is the 68th track to secure a seven-figure sale in the 2020s. Styles’ 11th million seller in all (including six with One Direction), it reached the figure a day after Seventeen Going Under became the 67th of the decade and the first yet for Sam Fender. Falling 16-17, Seventeen Going Under sold 18,325 copies in the week to raise its cumulative tally to 1,017,457.

We know Harry's 5 million sellers (Sign of the Times, Watermelon Sugar, Adore You, Falling and As It Was), and we know of 4 for definite with 1D (What Makes You Beautiful, History, Story of My Life and Little Things). Drag Me Down is almost definitely the fifth, but it feels too early for Steal My Girl - I'd predicted it to cross 1m next January...!

One Direction: Their biggest solo songs on the Official Charts revealed
15 November 2022 | By George Griffiths

Does it ever drive you crazy, just how fast the...

OK, let's just stop that there, shall we?

It doesn't need repeating that One Direction were - and still are - are pretty big deal.

Since their indefinite hiatus was announced in 2016, each member of One Direction - that's Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, in case you've been living under a rock - have gone on to pursue solo careers of their own. each with a unique and distinguishable sound.

As Louis becomes the latest 1D member to zero in on his very own Official Albums Chart Number 1 Award with the release of his sophomore record Faith In The Future, we're revealing the biggest solo songs of each One Direction member for the first time, according to Official Charts Company data.

5. Louis Tomlinson
Biggest solo song: Just Hold On with Steve Aoki
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 2
Total combined UK chart sales: 667,000
Perhaps more than any of his bandmates, Louis Tomlinson has made the concerted effort to not chase radio hits - with his two albums (Walls and Faith In The Future) finding their home in a more rock-based soundscape, influenced by the likes of Oasis and Blur. It's certainly working well for him - with Faith In The Future cruising towards becoming the Doncaster native's first solo chart-topper here.

But Louis did aim high with his first official solo offering - dance banger Just Hold On with DJ Steve Aoki, culminating in a highly emotional performance on that year's X Factor final, just days after the death of Louis' mother. With over 58 million streams to its name, Just Hold On ended up peaking at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart, with UK combined chart sales over 667,000.

For his most-streamed track outright, however, he joined forces with Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals for the icy Back To You (68 million UK streams to date).

4. Niall Horan
Biggest solo song: Slow Hands
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 7
Total combined UK chart sales: 1.3 million
Niall Horan had something of an...innocent persona during his time in One Direction, but that caricature was shattered spectacularly on his biggest solo hit so far, the rollicking Slow Hands.

Funky, catchy and dare we say even a little sexy, Slow Hands ranks as Niall's biggest overall hit in the UK; his first to reach the Official Singles Chart Top 10, peaking at Number 7, with combined UK chat sales exceeding 1.3 million, including over 127 million streams.

Albums-wise it's been a while since we've heard from Niall, but his last LP, 2020's Heartbreak Weather, became his first Number 1 album in the UK, so we're looking forward to seeing what he does next.

3. Liam Payne
Biggest solo song: Strip That Down (feat. Quavo)
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 3
Total combined UK chart sales: 1.3 million
When it came for Liam Payne to choose his post-1D sound, he went down the Timberlake-inspired route. Solo debut Strip That Down was a slice of Justified-inspired hip-pop with a guest verse from Migos member Quavo that saw success in both the UK and US Top 10s respectively.

Strip That Down remains Liam's solo hit with the most pull and pop; with well over 1.3 million combined UK chart sales and a very healthy 131 million streams and counting.

Interesting other fact for you, Liam's most-streamed video in the UK is another track entirely, Jonas Blue's Polaroid. The more you know!

2. ZAYN
Biggest solo song: PILLOWTALK
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1
Total combined UK chart sales: 1.5 million
"Climb on board..." have the opening lines of a debut single ever been so seductive?

ZAYN may have left One Direction under slightly chaotic circumstances, but his first offering of solo music was refreshingly clear-eyed and shimmered with intent. PILLOWTALK, his biggest solo song on the Official Charts, is proof of that, with help of impassioned lyrics and inspired electronic production.

With over 1.5 million chart sales since it became Zayn's first UK Number 1 single in 2016, PILLOWTALK still stands high in esteem in the hall of fame of 1D solo efforts, if you ask us.

You may be surprised to know, however, that ZAYN's biggest streamed song in the UK is actually something else entirely' the supercharged ballad-banger Dusk Till Dawn, recorded as a duet with Sia. Despite peaking at Number 5 in 2017, Dusk Till Dawn has received over 150 million streams.

1. Harry Styles
Biggest solo song: Watermelon Sugar
Official Singles Chart Peak: Number 4
Total combined UK chart sales: 2.1 million
By any metric the biggest pop star in the world right now, Harry Styles' remarkable rise to superstardom has seen him straddle the worlds of both music and cinema, receiving the accolade of a relatively rare Official Charts Double for As It Was and Harry's House, and one of the most profitable box office hits of 2022 in psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling.

And so it's little surprise that Harry is by and far the 1D member with the most success on the Official Charts - with two UK Number 1 singles and albums apiece, as well as seven UK Top 10 hits to spare.

But what song is the biggest? Well, his psychedelic ode to carnal pleasure, of course. Watermelon Sugar was just one of several brilliant singles from sophomore record Fine Line (shoutout to Adore You), and it's success speaks for itself, with Officially well over 2.1 million combined UK chart sales, with a mind-blowing 237 million streams and counting.

Harry's discography is diverse, however; current mega-smash As It Was is his most physically purchased single (12,000 chart sales), and grandiose debut single Sign Of The Times is his most-streamed video (over 20 million video streams).

One Direction's Official biggest solo songs in the UK
POS TITLE ARTIST YEAR PEAK

So many Harry songs certified. In fact, it's only Ever Since New York (surprised this is the lowest selling from HS1), Daydreaming, Love of My Life (this hasn't actually been certified silver yet sadly) and Boyfriends that haven't got a certification ohmy.gif

Harry Styles' Biggest Songs: As It Was, Watermelon Sugar and more UK Official Chart hits
23 May 2023 | By Carl Smith

To celebrate the return of Harry Styles' mammoth Love On Tour concert to UK shores, the Official Charts Company is proud to present the Cheshire-born chap's Official Top 20 biggest songs ever in the UK.

Finding infamy as a member of One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, Harry earned four Number 1 singles and albums during his time in the band, cultivating an enormous fanbase as a teen idol. Then, once 1D announced their indefinite hiatus in January 2016, Harry shed his pin-up skin almost immediately.

His solo music has expanded this frontman persona; deeply indebted musically and stylistically to British icons like Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Elton John.

Across three albums, Harry has explored various genres (soft rock, psychedelia and, on his latest record, post-funk and disco); all the while managing to front-load his own personal experiences and emotions to lend an air of authenticity that has only deepened with each new record.

Before we reveal the Top 20 in full below, let's take a closer look at Harry's Top 5 to date:

5. Falling
Released: 2019
UK chart units: 1.3 million
UK streams: 152 million
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 15
Thanks in part to a show-stopping performance of the track at the 2020 BRIT Awards - and a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge reimagination of the track by Little Mix later that year, Falling is Harry's fifth-biggest solo song in the UK to date; boasting total chart units of 1.3 million and 152 million UK streams and counting.

4. Adore You
Released: 2019
UK chart units: 1.5 million
UK streams: 181 million
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 7
A perfectly produced, written and performed pop tune, Adore You is an immaculate show of Harry's showmanship, one of the best post-boyband singles in recent memory. It also showed his weird side brilliantly, with the Dave Meyers-directed video transplanting Harry to the fictional British isle of Eroda, where he befriends a gigantic fish. Despite being Harry's third most successful single in the UK overall, Adore You is more successful on streams, being Harry's third most-streamed hit in the UK (181 million streams to date).

3. Sign of the Times
Released: 2017
UK chart units: 1.6 million
UK streams: 166 million
Official Singles Chart peak: 1
Imagine the pressure Harry must have felt going into the release of his debut single. He needn't have worried, however. Sign of the Times is an epic, transcendent rock ballad that wears its ode to David Bowie on its sleeve. Harry's first UK Number 1 single, five years on it still remains one of his most confident solo statements.

2. As It Was
Released: 2022
UK chart units: 2 million
UK streams: 233 million
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1
The Official biggest song of 2022 in the UK, As It Was launched Harry's third studio album Harry's House full-throttle. The '80s-tinged behemoth went on to win the 2023 BRIT Award for Best British Song and already boasts total UK chart units of 2 million just over a year after its original release. Could it soon overtake Watermelon Sugar to become Harry's Official biggest solo song in the UK?

1. Watermelon Sugar
Released: 2019
UK chart units: 2.2 million
UK streams: 258 million
Official Singles Chart peak: Number 4
Cheeky! Innuendo is rife throughout Watermelon Sugar, the song itself a barely-hidden ode to the female orgasm. Using sumptuous imagery, Watermelon Sugar glides by on its funk-inspired beat. Harry's biggest hit in the UK, it boasts total chart units in excess of . With , its also Harry's most-streamed song ever too. Although it never reached Number 1 here, it was his first chart-topper in the US and signalled his arrival as a bona fide superstar.

Updated! Late Night Talking now up to 4th for most top 40 weeks, and Satellite's added to Harry's top 40 tally, giving him five top 40s from Harry's House.

Meltdown is Niall's lowest-charting pre-album single unfortunately, though Heaven's performed consistently, perhaps a top 40 return is on the cards with the album's release?

One Direction: Official Top 20 biggest songs ever in UK revealed
14 June 2023

Can you believe it's been more than seven years since One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus? Since then, all five band members – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Niall Horan – have launched successful solo careers, continuing the group's legacy as a global pop phenomenon.

Looking back, it's incredible to witness just how much 1D packed in during their initial six-year run. They released five albums – Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014) and Made in the A.M. (2015) – embarked on four headline tours, and racked up 28 Top 75 singles in the UK. Four of those singles, beginning with their 2011 debut What Makes You Beautiful, made it to Number 1.

As Niall heads for another Number 1 with – this time on the Official Albums Chart, with his third solo effort The Show – we're taking the opportunity to unveil the era-defining boyband's Official Top 20 biggest songs in the UK.

Warning: you will end up wanting to revisit their gleaming back catalogue after reading this.

5. Drag Me Down
Released: 2015
UK chart units: 1.18m
UK streams: 108m
Official Singles Chart peak: 1
Released in July 2015, Made in the A.M.'s lead single was the band's first without Zayn, who had departed that March. One of the band's rockiest singles, it became their fourth Number 1 in the UK, confirming that One Direction were very much still viable as a four-piece.

4. Little Things
Released: 2012
UK chart units: 1.25m
UK streams: 83m
Official Singles Chart peak: 1
Co-written by Ed Sheeran, this folky ballad became One Direction's second Number 1 hit when it was released as Take Me Home's second single. Its sensitive and empathetic lyrics about embracing your flaws have made it a firm and enduring favourite with the band's fans.

3. History
Released: 2015
UK chart units: 1.3m
UK streams: 110m
Official Singles Chart peak: 6
Co-written by Liam and Louis, this singalong bop is – sob! – the group's final single to date. The wistful music video features clips from the band's many highlights over the years, encouraging fans to take a look back as they braced themselves for the upcoming hiatus.

2. Story of My Life
Released: 2013
UK chart units: 1.43m
UK streams: 111m
Official Singles Chart peak: 2
All five band members had a hand in writing this folktronica tune, which was released as the second single from Midnight Memories. One of 1D's best-known songs, it's since been covered by everyone from The Offspring to Natalie Imbruglia.

1. What Makes You Beautiful
Released: 2012
UK chart units: 1.94m
UK streams: 116m
Official Singles Chart peak: 2
Na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na, na, na! The group's ebullient debut single was an instant classic that debuted at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart. It remains such a crowd-pleaser that Harry included it in his setlist for his first two solo tours.

Niall Horan's Official Top 20 biggest songs in the UK: Slow Hands, Heaven and more hits
15 June 2023

This week, Niall Horan is heading for Number 1 with his third album The Show.

Home to the Top 20 hit Heaven, it's on course to become the Irishman's second solo chart-topper following 2020's Heartbreak Weather. His debut album, Flicker, reached Number 3 in 2017.

After finding fame as a member of One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik, Niall has carved out an enviable solo career including eight Top 40 singles.

His music, a deft blend of pop, soft rock and folk, has proven so infectious that he has recently announced a 57-date arena tour for early 2024. Given that Niall was unable to tour in support of Heartbreak Weather because of the pandemic, these shows across Europe, Oceania and North America are sure to feel even more joyful.

So, as his solo career approaches another milestone moment, we're unveiling the Mullingar-born musician's 20 biggest songs ever in the UK, including collaborations with Anne-Marie and Julia Michaels. But first, let's take a closer look at Niall's Top 5 to date:

5. What a Time (with Julia Michaels)
Released: 2019
UK chart units: 445,000
UK streams: 55m
Official Singles Chart peak: n/a
Taken from Julia's 2019 EP Inner Monologue Part 1, this lovely, understated duet has been a slow-burning success on streaming. Niall didn't write it, but we’d love to see him perform it on his upcoming tour.

4. Our Song (with Anne-Marie)
Released: 2021
UK chart units: 532,000
UK streams: 59m
Official Singles Chart peak: 13
Niall and Anne-Marie's vocals dovetail beautifully on this wistful pop ballad about a past relationship it's tough to move on from. The two singers enjoyed working together so much that later in 2021, they also teamed up for a cute cover of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere in aid of BBC Children in Need. Let's hope we get a third duet from the pair sooner rather than later.

3. Nice to Meet Ya
Released: 2019
UK chart units: 535,000
UK streams: 60m
Official Singles Chart peak: 22
Niall really brings the swagger on this stomping, Britpop-inspired bop from Heartbreak Weather. It's an impressive demonstration of his musical range even before you check out the Diplo remix, which reimagines the guitar-led original as an arms-in-the-air electro-house anthem.

2. This Town
Released: 2016
UK chart units: 986,000
UK streams: 100m
Official Singles Chart peak: 9
Niall's first solo single is a folky ode to the one that got away. "I saw that you moved on with someone new," he sings over gently strummed guitar chords. "In the pub that we met he's got his arms around you." The poignant lyrics double as a celebration of Mullingar, the small market town where he grew up, adding to an utterly charming debut.

1. Slow Hands
Released: 2017
UK chart units: 1.4m
UK streams: 134m
Official Singles Chart peak: 7
Niall showed a more grown-up side on his funky and infectiously suggestive second single. "We should take this back to my place, that's what she said right to my face," he sings at the start, and it's safe to presume they won't be playing backgammon. An absolute tune that proved he could deliver bops as well as ballads, it spent 29 weeks on the Official Singles Chart.

This week 12 years ago, The X Factor alumni One Direction kicked off their Official Charts career with an irresistible debut single, What Makes You Beautiful.

The group’s power pop gem stormed to Number 1 in its week of release and has gone on to spend an incredible 78 weeks on the Official Singles Chart so far. With 2 million UK chart units and 125 million UK streams to its name to date, it remains the Anglo-Irish boyband's biggest song so far.

The accompanying video saw the five band members – Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – having fun on Malibu Beach and an old-school campervan. It's the epitome of good times.

One Direction What Makes You Beautiful single artwork

Written by top songwriters Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk and Savan Kotecha – who would become key collaborators on the group's first two albums Up All Night and Take Me Home – the ebullient tune captured the group's natural charisma and youthful enthusiasm perfectly. It also had an empowering message that struck a chord with anyone who might've felt insecure about the way they look.

"You don't know you're beautiful," the boys sing on the chorus. "That's what makes you beautiful."

One Direction would go on to achieve three further Number 1s on the Official Singles Chart – Little Things in 2012, Blondie-meets-The Undertones Comic Relief cover single One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks) in 2013 and Drag Me Down in 2015 – before announcing an indefinite hiatus in January 2016.

Since then, of course, every band member has gone on to launch a successful solo career. You can read our exclusive interview with Niall Horan, likely one of the nicest guys in pop, about his Number 1 album The Show here.

Elsewhere on the Official Singles Chart this week in 2011...
Right behind One Direction at Number 2 was Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s inescapable collaboration Moves Like Jagger. It's one of the UK's best-selling singles of all time despite never having reached Number 1, settling for seven weeks in the Number 2 spot.

At Number 3 was the previous week's Number 1, All About Tonight by Pixie Lott, while Will Young's Jealousy climbed three places to return to the Top 10. It has previously peaked at Number 5 to become Will’s 11th and most recent Top 10 hit.

Meanwhile, Rihanna's Avril Lavigne-sampling banger Cheers (Drink to That) climbed to Number 15, which would remain its Official Singles Chart peak. Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah, as Avril sings on the hook.
