QUOTE
NRK, the Norwegian national broadcaster has revealed that around 1,000 entries have been submitted for the upcoming Norwegian Eurovision national final - Melodi Grand Prix 2016.

A special committee appointed by NRK consisting of Pia Skevik, Marie Komissar, Jan Fredrik Karlsen and Stig Karlsen will evaluate all received entries and select a total of 10 songs/acts for the 2016 Norwegian national final- Melodi Grand Prix. One of these lucky 10 songs will go on to represent Norway at the forthcoming 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.

NRK is yet to announce the dates and venue for MGP 2016. More information on the 2016 Norwegian national final will be disclosed in due course.

In 2015 Norway opted for its annual Eurovision national selection MGP in order to select its Eurovision entry and act for Vienna. Mørland & Debrah Scarlett won the 2015 Norwegian national final and were awarded the golden ticket to represent Norway at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest with their entry Monster like me. Norway achieved an honorable 8th placing in the grand finale in Vienna.

Norway really have found themselves on an incredibly strong run of entries, ever since 2008 for me. Only Carl Espen was a slight dip in quality for my personal taste but there was no denying it was a very high quality song and performance. Mørland & Debrah were absolutely fantastic last year, I'd love for Norway to continue their slightly alternative-pop genre they've found themselves in since Margaret in 2013!

Posted by: Conderella 26th November 2015, 07:01 AM

monster like me and silent storm were alternative how exactly?

Posted by: Ryan. 26th November 2015, 08:37 AM

Not proper alternative, just they both had a different darker vibe that is unusual for Eurovision to an extent.

Posted by: AdventAloud 2nd December 2015, 12:33 PM

The final will take place in Oslo on 27th February and will once again be hosted by Silya and Kåre Magnus Bergh. The 10 finalists will be announced in January.

God Monster Like Me was a RIGHT BORE. I get how it did well but it brought nothing new to the table at all. I started off loving Silent Storm but the perf totally killed it dead for me.

Time for a TITS OUT ODYSSEY THANKS NORGE

Posted by: AdventAloud 2nd December 2015, 12:48 PM

Norway are on a good run of 3 consecutive top 10's so hopefully they go all guns blazing to keep it up!

And yes no more ballads please, Norway ain't France or the balkans.

La Berger to return and win the whole thing, takk.

^ I choose this one

But "Monster Like Me" was a real highlight for me this year, in my personal top 5 heart.gif

Posted by: Izzletoe 5th December 2015, 05:10 PM

I've been loving Norway the past three years, all in my absolute favourites of each contest so MORE OF the classy pop please. They know how to do it. Although if they can put that formula through to something upbeat I won't complain either. Thing is, A Monster Like Me and Silent Storm really stood out for me among the rest of the ballads so I've taken very little issue with them.

Posted by: AdamAloud 8th January 2016, 10:43 AM

The song/artist announcement will take place on 19th January

Posted by: Vülker 18th January 2016, 10:43 PM

I'm in Oslo right now and apparently a boyband called Suite 16 are rumoured to take part.
Announcement is tomorrow but I hear there are no tickets left for the Press Conference.

Hoping for Laila's song to go cray cray in full form *.*

Stage Dolls is the stage name of, one would assume, three 14-year old girls, but apparently not.

Disney is back with Stine *.*

Suite 16 are winning this, aren't they? No one show them to Joseph plz

ugh i don't get this selection. 40 year olds singing something a 21 year old would usually get, a f***ing boyband, 57 lesbians choir trying very hard not to be a laughing stock of the competition, 3 token old men who are definitely going to the final. oh and did I mention a boyband?!

AGNETE SAVE US ALL

Posted by: JosephMendes 19th January 2016, 09:21 PM

Too late Pav, I've known about Suite 16 for about a year now

Posted by: Jerick 19th January 2016, 09:37 PM

I only knew Agnete and Freddy Kalas laugh.gif

I can only see Agnete winning this year

Posted by: Jerick 20th January 2016, 03:11 PM

Freddy Kalas is DSQ, the chours is to similar to a song he made 5 years ago...

It's embarrasing for NRK and Fredrik Karlsen that they didn't noticed this. Sad for the show too, cause I think he would've made a great show.

Edit: NRK is in a meeting now, discussing what to do next.

Posted by: Jerick 26th January 2016, 08:37 PM

Freddy Kalas will be participating in the final with a new chours. The song name is also been changed to 'Feel Da Rush'

Afterglow is just amazing *.*

Posted by: gooddelta 2nd February 2016, 11:33 AM

OMG at Hungry Hearts, it's like a German ABBA techno tribute band were asked to knock up something quickly using eJay software from 2001.

Posted by: Jerick 2nd February 2016, 03:40 PM

My first ranking

01. Laila Samuels - Afterglow
02. Suite 16 - Anna Lee
03. Agnete - Icebreaker

04. Freddy Kalas - Feel Da Rush
05. Stine Hole Ulla - Traces
06. Elouiz - History

07. Stage Dolls - Into The Fire
08. Makeda - Stand Up
09. Pegasus - Anyway

10. The Hungry Hearts ft. Lisa Dillan - Laika

Posted by: JosephStyles 2nd February 2016, 08:47 PM

I'm a bit of a casual Suite 16 fan, I only really know Stupid Lovesong of theirs but Anna-Lee is way better than that, properly loving this heart.gif

Posted by: 💯 2nd February 2016, 09:56 PM

afterglow though. a fantastic performance would secure norway's top 10 streak for another year. sure, it sounds a bit balkan circa 2007 but we haven't had this kind of song in the contest in years ;_;

icebreaker's change of tempo sounds REALLY WEIRD. it's like parts of two different songs are being played in turns :/

the hungry hearts i just have no words. i knew this would be a hot mess but this turned out to be even hotter than i could ever imagine. this will be a eurovision national final classic in a few years time

all in all, afterglow to win *.*

AGREE! With a better change of tempo it would've been SO much better!

Afterglow sounds like a secure top 10, let's hope for a third consecutive 8th place!

Posted by: gooddelta 10th February 2016, 08:38 PM

What's happened to MGP, this selection is so underwhelming sad.gif So many sound so cheaply produced and most of the songs aren't that special to start with. With 10 songs I'd expect the quality control to be a bit higher, 2009 had double the number of songs and that included 7 or 8 which were 9/10+.

I'm rooting for Icebreaker or Afterglow, even though the structure of the former is indeed really odd. I like Laika (TRULY iconic mess) and Anna Lee too but I think another top 10 finish at Eurovision might be a tall order for Norway.

Posted by: Jerick 11th February 2016, 06:18 PM

MGP have been terrible dull since 2014, when they changed the format. I have lost my motivation, and I feel a bit fustrating. Thank god for Melodifestivalen. I think most people agree with me that NRK have made a big mistake. Before I was very proud of MGP, alot of people in Norway and abroad tuned in to watch just like MF. But now it feels more like EuroFest in Belarus.
When MGP had semi finals it felt like the whole nation took part, as they went all around the country. More Norwegians watched it, and people could listen to the songs for weeks and get to know them. The newspapers wrote much more about mgp, and people were much more engaged.

I'm glad they scrapped the "MGP weekend" though, cause those semi finals that took part in a theater in 2014 was just dire to watch.

Viewing figures of the finals

2009 1 526 000
2010 1 382 000
2011 1 304 000
2012 1 216 000
2013 980 000
2014 755 000
2015 1 250 000

Running order for the final

1. The Hungry Hearts feat. Lisa Dillan – “Laika”
2. Stage Dolls – “Into The Fire”
3. Ulla – “Traces”
4. Makeda – “Stand Up”
5. Pegasus – “Anyway”
6. Freddy Kalas – “Feel Da Rush”
7. Laila Samuels – “Afterglow”
8. Elouiz – “History”
9. Suite 16 – “Anna Lee”
10. Agnete – “Icebreaker”

Posted by: Ryan. 21st February 2016, 03:21 PM

Spotted this earlier, all the 4 runaway favourites in the second half of the draw I see! Should be fairly simple for Freddy, Laila, Suite 16 and Agnete to make the superfinal unless The Hungry Hearts can spring a surprise.

Posted by: Jerick 25th February 2016, 04:34 PM

Top 5 most streamed MGP entries on Spotify in the largest cities in Norway.

1. Freddy Kalas - 3 million streams
2. Suite 16 - 75 000 streams
3. Agnete - 45 000

Spotify streams usally don't reflect the results, but it's kinda interesting how much more Freddy Kalas have been streamed than his other contenders.

When it comes to Suite 16 I have grown really fund of them the last couple of days after I heard it on the radio and they released Norway's first 360° video the other day. I think the preformance on Saturday will decide if my vote will go to Laila Samuels or Suite 16. Would be nice with something else than a ballad.

Voting
The voting will consist of two rounds and both will be decided by 100% televoting. In the first round the top 4 songs will progress to the superfinal where the winner will be chosen, with televotes announced region by region!

Potential Winners?
Jerick will probably know the general feeling in Norway more than me, but it terms of the odds the bookmakers all agree that Agnete is favourite to win with odds averaging around Evens for her. Already a big Spotify hit in Norway, second favourite is Freddy Kalas with odds around the 3/1 mark and is closely followed by Laila Samuels and Suite 16 on odds averaging around 4/1 and 5/1 respectively. The Hungry Hearts feat. Lisa Dillan aren't too far behind either with odds averaging around 6/1, although as low as a victory-challenging 3/2 at Nordic Bet!

Media have already declared Agnete as the favorite, at least NRK Dagsrevyen (Norway's most daily watched news program) did today. They had an interview with her today.

There was a program late tonight, called 'Dagen før Dagen' (The day before the day). I didn't watch it because I had to go to work, so I don't know if they discussed any winning chances. I recorded it so will be watching it before the final tomorrow.

How I see it, the one's with a chance of winning is Laila Samuels, Agnete and maybe followed close by Suite 16 and Freddy Kalas. Laila Samuels sounds like something the average Norwegian will vote for (including myself). Right at this moment I'm split between her and Suite 16. Would be nice to send something else than a ballad this year, will be deciding after the performances before I decide. Since 2008 my favorite have won, but this year I think it will be extreamly close!

My prediction for the superfinal would be

1. Laila Samuels
2. Agnete
3. Freddy Kalas
4. Suite 16

The Hungry Hearts may kick Freddy Kalas or Suite 16 out of the superfinal as Young adults/teenagers votes will be split between them.

Posted by: Ryan. 27th February 2016, 01:32 AM

Agnete is my favourite quite easily, but I'd be very happy with Freddy Kalas winning too I think. Unlike the Pizza song last year this comes across as a solid summer pop song and not just a novelty song!

I've only listened to Laila once and I can't remember it so I'll have to see if it clicks tomorrow, and while Suite 16 was nice we don't need another boyband type song when we already have Lighthouse X, Nicky Byrne and now I suppose Joe and Jake all filling that category even if Suite 16 does it better than a couple of them.

Hurrah! I am so excited! What a great opening number! cheer.gif

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:15 PM

That was such an intriguing song and a really interesting and bold stage performance! biggrin.gif So fun! I would almost love for this to win! tongue.gif I actually wouldn't be opposed to it.. as that would give us a lot of attention tongue.gif

Posted by: LexDANCE 27th February 2016, 08:22 PM

I have no words for that 'Laika' performance. Would be such a change of style for Norway to the point of absolute ridiculousness.

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:24 PM

Two alright songs in a row. I guess they're nice within each genre, though. But I guess they have to be there because, well, diversity and stuff! happy.gif

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:29 PM

Hmm.. interesting outfit (tongue.gif) and a nice voice. Kind of catchy too, but that is all. It should be more to it, though, if she wants to advance to the gold final, I feel.

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:38 PM

Wooooooh! This is some serious sexy stuff! biggrin.gif Amazingly deep "jamaican" styled voice and so catchy! I love it! cheer.gif

Stunning performance from Laila! The crowd screams her name after she was finished!

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:51 PM

I really like this too! It's actually quite rare that I like most of what our national final has to offer these past few years, so that's great smile.gif

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 08:57 PM

Well.. I thought that was catchy happy.gif And now I'm really excited to hear Agnete! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jerick 27th February 2016, 09:02 PM

Suite 16's vocals were really off some places sad.gif

Amazing performance from Agnete, think the bookmakers are right about Agnete winning!!

Posted by: Freeze 27th February 2016, 09:02 PM

That. Was. Incredible! wub.gif She really has to win this! In a way it does really seem perfect to represent Norway in Eurovision!
