It's just a cruel existence like there's no point hoping at all

#50. I Don't Wanna Live Forever [Ft Zayn] | Avg.5.187

Highest Scores: 9.5: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: 0: [George.keh]

In the dead last position (to no surprise to anyone) is one of Taylor's many soundtrack singles. 'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' released in December 2016 & features Zayn for the 2017 film Fifty Shades Darker. It had an overall positive critical reception & became a commercial smash hit by reaching #2 in the USA making this her 11th top 5 hit & Zayn's 2nd as a solo artist, as well as hitting top 5 in the UK & several other countries. The song attempts to go for that breathy & sexy slow jam vibe with its Electro R&B tinged sound, but both artists comes across more bored than anything, but do commend Taylor for at least attempting something different with her vocals, hitting those high notes quite well. However the constant duelling of falsetto's becomes rather grating & like the movie it comes from overcooked and just not very enjoyable.

#49. Tim McGraw | Avg.5.25

Highest Scores: 7.5/7: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, Riser, Bjork], Lowest Scores: 2: [Tawdry Hepburn]

At #49 we have Taylor's very first ever single 'Tim McGraw' , released way back in June 2006 as the lead single from her self-titled debut album. The song performed well commercially, spending various weeks upon both the Billboard and Hot Country Songs, peaking at #40 becoming her first ever top 40 hit, as well as hitting #6 on the later.. The song spent 20 weeks on the chart & was later certified Platinum for sales of over 1.6 Million units. This was a nice little starting off point, a stark difference to the direction she would later go in, with its elegant guitar & simple yet polished Country-Pop production; a nice relatable tale of teen romance that displays her talents for song-writing even at such an early stage that takes you back to a more simpler time & yes there are limitations to this sound (you can see why she would abandon it), but its a nice little track.

#48. Beautiful Ghosts | Avg.5.333

Highest Scores: 9: [ready for it], Lowest Scores: 2: [JosephInSpace, Bjork]

At #48 we say to yet another soundtrack release 'Beautiful Ghosts' which featured on the 2019 movie Cats for which she also stars in. The song was written by Taylor herself & the creator of the musical itself Andrew Lloyd Webber. Released in November 2019 & like the film itself didn't have much impact on any of the main music charts worldwide, although this song did receive more praise than the awful mess of the movie itself. To be honest is this really a single at all because it doesn't really feel like it & wouldn't rank this as one of her better moments, her vocals while great as always seems to a little strained on here & while the song is beautifully orchestrated, it doesn't compliment her voice at all.

#47. Me! (Ft Brandon Urie of Panic at the Disco) | Avg.5.406

Highest Scores: 10: [Monzo, FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: -1/0: [George.keh, blacksquare, WinterFreeze, Bjork]

At #47 we have 'Me!' released in April 2019 as the lead single from her 7th and most recent studio album 'Lover' & features Brandon Urie the lead vocalist of the band Panic At The Disco, this marks her first release after signing to new label Republic Records & received a polarizing reception by critics & fans, but nonetheless became a success worldwide by reaching #2 in the USA after debuting at #100, making this the biggest climb in Billboard history, as well as hitting top 3 in the UK becoming her 12th top 10 hit. Wow a lot of the scores for this were pretty harsh & to an extent kinda see why, while I wasn't keen on this at first, it has grown on me, its a nice refreshment after the dark & dour 'Reputation' era. Taylor constantly grows & evolves as an artist with each album & throughout this she's brought out some amazing tunes, but this lacks all of those things & feels like a bit of a step-back despite the nice colourful production & tongue in cheek verses which are quite fun. However I do feel like that this wasn't the best choice as a lead single ('Cruel Summer' would have been my choice) & probably would have worked better as a stand-alone release instead of kicking off a new era.

#46. Ronan | Avg.5.687

Highest Scores: 9: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: 2: [Tawdry Hepburn]

The last of this selection at #46 is 'Ronan', a charity single released in September 2012 with lyrics based on a blog by Maya Thompson about her four-year-old boy Ronan, who died from neuroblastoma in 2011. The song received universal acclaim by critics & on its first week it received 220,000 downloads & peaked at #16 on the US Billboard charts as well as charting at #34 on the Country charts. I fully commend Taylor for what she's created here a simple heartbreaking tune with lyrics that are genuinely moving making this a true gut-wrenching high in Taylor's songwriting history.

Posted by: Jade 13th March 2020, 11:37 PM

'Me!' and 'Ronan' are too low! Not too fussed about those other three though.

Posted by: FUTURE NOSTALGIA 13th March 2020, 11:39 PM

well this is already a f***ing mess

Ronan bottom five, no.

Me is underrated af idee, such a massive bop <3 (tho I'm lowkey shocked it avoided the bottom 3 aha)

Beautiful Ghosts is low-key stunning

Tim McGraw is fine but probs should've avoided the bottom two

IDWLF is honestly SOO good, I love that song so much and I'm acc shocked/gutted its last :///

Posted by: Riser 14th March 2020, 02:11 AM

I'm hardly a fan, but I Don't Wanna Live Forever ending up last is a shock to me! Didn't think it was that poorly received on here.

These walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down

#45. Both of Us (Ft B.o.B.) | Avg.5.718

Highest Scores: 10: [Jonjo], Lowest Scores: 1: [blacksquare]

At #45 another collaboration drops 'Both of Us' which features American rapper B.o.B & released in May 2012 as the 3rd single from his 2nd studio album 'Strange Clouds'. The track is alternative Hip-Hop with influences of country, rap and dubstep, upon release the track received critical acclaim & became a success worldwide by reaching top 10 peaks in Australia & New Zealand, while peaking at #18 in the USA, as well as reaching top 30 in the UK. This track is pretty decent that blends both artists styles together pretty nicely, creating an emotional number. It may feel quite disjointed at times with 2 different songs stitched together, but the lyrical themes works. A fine track, but she's done far better.

#44. Change | Avg.5.75

Highest Scores: 9: [Euphorique], Lowest Scores: 3: [Monzo, Tawdry Hepburn]

At #44 we have 'Change' a stand-alone single released in August 2008 with all proceeds donated to the United States Olympics Team & later chosen as one of the themes for that year's summer Olympics as well being included on the 'AT&T Team USA Soundtrack, as well as being added to her 2nd studio album 'Fearless as a bonus track. It received a mixed reviews yet managed the top 10 on the USA charts, becoming her first song to do so. Seen as bit of a stop gap before her next album & quite generic with its inspirational paint by numbers theme & definitely stands as one of her most forgettable tracks from her early career.

#43. The Last Time (Ft Gary Lightbody) | Avg.5.812

Highest Scores: 9: [Monzo, Jonjo], Lowest Scores: 3: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA, George.keh, Tawdry Hepburn]

At #43 is 'The Last Time', released in November 2013 as the 7th and final single from her 4th studio album 'Red' and features Irish singer Gary Lightbody of the band Snow Patrol. A power-ballad track that draws from alternative rock, along with influences of folk rock. Upon release the song was a minor hit by reaching top 30 in the UK & Ireland, as well as charting in Canada & despite not being officially released in the USA it managed to chart at #103 on the US Bubbling Under chart. Definitely one of Taylor's most mature numbers with very raw & earnest vocals by both artists with some beautiful strings in there. Although the song feels longer than it does making it a bit of a slog to get through & not one of her most interesting tracks of her discography.

#42. End Game (Ft Future & Ed Sheeran) | Avg.5.843

Highest Scores: 9.5/9: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA, Bjork], Lowest Scores: 0: [George.keh, WinterFreeze]

At #42 is 'End Game' which features British singer Ed Sheeran & American rapper Future & released in November 2017 as the 3rd single from her 6th studio album 'Reputation'. The track was written by the trio of artists along with producers Max Martin and Shellback. Upon release the song was expected to be a big hit, but didn't quite succeed but did manage to reach top 20 peaks in Canada & USA, as well as top 40 in Australia, but only managed lower peaks elsewhere. Firstly this was an obvious attempt at recreating the success of 'Bad Blood' from her previous album, but here it comes across as a messy R&B track that's very disjointed & feels at odds with her usual tight song-writing. A disappointing effort from everybody involved & probably killed the already messy 'Reputation' era.

#41. Picture To Burn | Avg.5.875

Highest Scores: 9: [SamJudd, WinterFreeze], Lowest Scores: 3: [Nick F1, blacksquare]

Just outside the top 40 is 'Picture To Burn', released in February 2008 as the 4th single from her self titled debut album & received praise from music critics. The single was a commercial success by peaking at #28 on the US Billboard charts as well as reaching #3 on the US Country charts, it was certified Platinum with sales of over a Million units. I really like this one & can be seen as an early example of Taylor's most celebrated song-writing tropes & she's having a hell of a time doing it & fully embracing the theme of the song, yet its catchy as hell at the same time. A definite highlight on her first album.

Posted by: FUTURE NOSTALGIA 14th March 2020, 11:02 AM

Now that should've been the bottom five and I wouldn't have been mad kink.gif End Game issa bop and deserved to be higher!!

I used to stan PTB so much but I cooled on it, I've always wanted to like The Last Time more than I did, Change is average and Both of Us is meh

Also Sweeter Than Fiction avoiding the bottom 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE TO SEE IT *.*

Posted by: Jade 14th March 2020, 11:05 AM

I did expect 'The Last Time' to be that low (</3) but aw 'End Game' bottom 10 as well? That is a tune, was frustrating to see it flop in the real world too

Posted by: Jonjo 14th March 2020, 12:41 PM

'The Last Time' is gorgeous. So, SO much better than the Ed collab from the same album! Doesn't deserve bottom 10 </3

Same with 'Both Of Us'. Ridiculously underrated.

'End Game' shouldn't be there either! I honestly expected that to do better.

Just a small suggestion: I think it may look better if the numbers were counted downwards in each post rather than upwards.

I knew 'ME!' was quite widely disliked, but I'm surprised to see it as low as #47!

Lurking in the shadows with their lip gloss smiles

#40. Babe [Ft Sugarland] | Avg.5.9

Highest Scores: 8: [ready for it, George.keh], Lowest Scores: 3: [Bjork]

At #40 we lose yet another collaboration, 'Babe' recorded by American country music duo Sugarland & features guest vocals by none other Taylor Swift herself. Released in April 2018 as the 2nd single from their 6th studio album 'Bigger'. Upon release the song became a minor hit by peaking at #72 on the US Top 100, while faring better on the Country charts by reaching the top 10. The track was originally written by Taylor herself & Patrick Monahan of the band Train & meant to be included on her 4th album 'Red', but for whatever reason it never happened & she never recorded the song herself. I never really took that much notice in this song before, but after giving it another spin; I quite like it, the lyrics are very classic Taylor & from the very first lines it hooks you in, along with the incredibly catchy chorus with just the right combination of drum beats and guitar riffs, it’s toe-tapping perfection. Even her backing vocals lends a very nice touch to a very decent track.

#39. Today Was A Fairytale | Avg.6.093

Highest Scores: 10: [ready for it], Lowest Scores: 3.5: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA]

At #39 is 'Today Was A Fairytale', released in January 2010 as a single from the soundtrack for the movie 'Valentine's Day', which she also acted in. It received generally positive reviews & became a commercial success by reaching #2 in the USA, topping the charts in Canada (her first there) & top 3 in Australia. A very generic soundtrack filler, with a cute but unmemorable melody. Its not terrible, just quite bland with that usual familiar lyric tropes. A minor entry in her discography.

#38. Ours | Avg.6.187

Highest Scores: 9.5: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: 2: [Bjork]

At #38 is 'Ours' released in November 2011 as the 6th and final single from her 3rd studio album 'Speak Now'. In the USA the song peaked at #13 on the Billboard charts becoming the album's 5th top 20 hit, while topping the US Country charts, making this her 6th chart topper & went on to sell over 1.5 Million units, earning a Platinum certification. The song didn't have much impact internationally making minor dents in Canada, Australia & UK. A beautiful yet understated number with a certain low key charm to it & while it may not be as grand & glossy as some of her other hits, its still sharply written & quite effective.

#37. Sweeter Than Fiction | Avg.6.187

Highest Scores: 10: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: 3: [Nick F1, George.keh]

At #37 we have yet another soundtrack single 'Sweeter Than Fiction', released in October 2013 as the lead single for the 'One Chance'. It was well received by critics & had moderate success on the charts worldwide; charting best in Canada at #17, while making top 40 peaks in New Zealand, USA & Ireland. This track is definitely a lot more fun & memorable than the movie it came from, with Taylor tackling something quite different for her with its bubblegum electropop sound with addictive verses & upbeat 80's new wave production that foreshadows the direction she would take with her next album. Very underrated & deserved much better than it got.

Posted by: Riser 16th March 2020, 01:13 AM

At the time 'Today Was A Fairytale' seemed like such a parody of herself, I remember Taylor being criticized for too many lyrics about fairytales and then she released this laugh.gif It's actually grown on me over 10 years though, I wouldn't even consider it one of her worst anymore.

'Ours' is cute, definitely shouldn't be the lowest Speak Now single!

Posted by: Bré 16th March 2020, 01:24 AM

'The Last Time' is still one of her best songs, you are all still wrong x

'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' coming dead last is a bit surprising - didn't expect it to be particularly high but definitely not THAT low. Not that it's any particular loss, was never keen on that. The only other songs posted so far that I particularly like are 'Both Of Us' and 'End Game' ('ME!' and 'Beautiful Ghosts' are decent too).

(I didn't get around to doing this this time oops, I thought about it but then kinda forgot, will try and follow the results anyway xo)

Posted by: FUTURE NOSTALGIA 16th March 2020, 04:31 AM

Babe and Today Was A Fairytale deserved bottom 10. Eek at me being the lowest scorer of the latter, it just does nothing for me sad.gif

Ours really hit me a couple years ago and now I adore it <3 It deserved better but it's not essential for me when compared to some of the others aha

Sweeter Than Fiction <3 <3 wub.gif Idec it's one of my all time Taylor faves I adore it so much *.* I'm glad and shocked it avoided the bottom 10, still underrated af tho!

#36. Gorgeous | Avg.6.218

Highest Scores: 8: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA], Lowest Scores: 3: [blacksquare]

At #36 is 'Gorgeous', originally released as the 2nd promo single, then later as the 5th single from her 6th studio album 'Reputation' in January 2018. The track performed well despite not having a music video like the other singles did & worldwide with top 10 peaks in Australia, Canada & Hungary while making top 20 peaks in 9 other countries including the UK & USA. Quite a stark difference compared to the singles that came before & more lyrical than your average pop song that boasts a quite nice melody that came be a bit too horizontal to stick. I wouldn't rank this as one of the better moments, the absence of a music video doesn't help matters as that could have maybe pushed the song a bit more & get the feeling that this was only picked as a single because of how well it did as a promo.

#35. Everything Has Changed [Ft Ed Sheeran] | Avg.6.25

Highest Scores: 8.5/8: [Monzo, JosephInSpace, Riser, Euphorique, Bjork], Lowest Scores: 2: [George.keh]

At #35 is 'Everything Has Changed' which features English singer songwriter Ed Sheeran (making this their first collaboration together), released in July 2013 as the 6th single from her 4th studio album 'Red'. The track is a guitar ballad combining folk & pop genres, it received mixed reviews by critics, but nonetheless it became a huge success by reaching top 10 peaks in UK, Ireland & Belgium, while reaching top 40 peaks everywhere else including the USA. A very cutesy, slightly cliched middle of the road pop song, It's fairly inoffensive even if the harmonies are quite bland, but it did further Taylor's dominance on the UK charts, so that's something.

#34. Our Song | Avg.6.281

Highest Scores: 10: [SamJudd], Lowest Scores: 2: [Jade]

At #34 is one of my personal faves 'Our Song', released in September 2007 as the 3rd single from her self-titled debut album. The uptempo track is musically driven mainly by banjo and lyrically describes a young couple who use the events in their lives in place of a regular song & was met with highly positive reviews and met with commercial success by reaching #16 in the USA & top 30 in Canada, as well as becoming her first #1 on the US Country charts & ended up selling over 3.4 Million units & earning a 4x Platinum status. Backed with a banjo & fiddle along with immaculate guitar strums, along with some snappy, self-referential lyrics were an early indication that Miss Swift was a smart writer & makes this one of her finest pure country songs.

#33. Eyes Open | Avg.6.312

Highest Scores: 9: [Riser], Lowest Scores: 2.5: [George.keh]

At #33 is 'Eyes Open' released in March 2012 as the 2nd single from 'The Hunger Games' movie soundtrack, 'The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond', though the song wasn't included in the film itself, but did garner general acclaim from critics & performed well on the US Billboard charts by peaking at #19 as well as a top 20 peak in Canada, & minor peaks in other countries such as Australia, Ireland & UK. A more rock influenced & energetic than the previous single with some muddy guitars for good measure, but not quite as memorable, to be honest I keep forgetting how it goes. There is a sound of an artist still finding herself in a different genre.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 16th March 2020, 11:27 PM

Gawd, 'Everything Has Changed' really is a complete snoozefest.

Posted by: Jade 16th March 2020, 11:34 PM

'Gorgeous' is my highlight there! The 'Reputation' era is a bit messy to look back on but I truly feel that all of the singles from it are of a high standard.

Posted by: Jonjo 17th March 2020, 12:00 AM

'Gorgeous' is one of the bottom 3 on 'Reputation'. Boring and uninteresting. 'Everything Has Changed' is so mediocre too. Glad to see they're both not much higher!

Posted by: SamJudd 17th March 2020, 02:41 AM

The kind of flawless I wish I could be

#32. Begin Again | Avg.6.468

Highest Scores: 9: [Riser], Lowest Scores: 4.5: [George.keh]

At #32 is 'Begin Again', initially released as a promo single in September 2012, then later as the 2nd official single from her 4th studio album 'Red'. With wide critical acclaim & became commercially successful with top 10 peaks in the USA & Canada, as well as top 20 peaks in Australia & New Zealand, then top 40 mostly everywhere else. Despite going full on pop for the lead single this showed she hadn't entirely left her country roots behind with this soft yet beautiful ballad with some sharp flecked lyrics & while this does get overshadowed by the album's more showier singles, its still a great ode to her country sound.

#31. Fearless | Avg.6.5

Highest Scores: 8.5/8: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA, ready for it, JosephInSpace, Riser, Euphorique], Lowest Scores; 4: [Tawdry Hepburn]

At #31 we have another Country tune 'Fearless' , released in January 2010 as the 5th and final single from her 2nd album also titled 'Fearless' & while it has more of a pop/rock tinged sound than anything else she'd done up to this point, it received acclaim by critics & became a commercially hit by debuted and peaked at #9 on the US Top 100 and it was her first single to earn a Gold disc before it got officially released; meaning they basically had to release it. Elsewhere it also charted in Canada & Spain, as well as making a minor dent on the UK charts as a digital download. The title tracks don't always tend to be her strongest suits, but this is a fun thrilling little number with a catchy chorus & while it doesn't quite pack the punch of the earlier singles & was only released due to its high debut & to milk the era, its still a fine track.

#30. Teardrops On My Guitar | Avg.6.562

Highest Scores: 9: [FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it, WinterFreeze, Euphorique], Lowest Scores: -1: [Tawdry Hepburn]

As we head into the top 30 we have yet again another Country offering 'Teardrops On My Guitar', released in February 2007 as the 2nd single from her self titled debut album (leaving one left from that era in the running). This track was positively received by critics & considered to be her breakthrough hit by reaching #13 on the US Top 100, becoming the album's best charting single & spent 48 weeks on the chart, going on to sell 3 Million copies, being certified 3x Platinum. The track was later released in the UK in 2009 as her 2nd single following 'Love Story'. This is a prime example of early classic Taylor that's guided by a gentle acoustic guitar with its tale of high school heartbreak that's very melodramatic, but thanks to Taylor's earnest vocals. the polished production & some beautiful arrangements, she totally sells it & creating both a Pop & Country version of this was a smart move which in its former version makes it more commercially viable & even at this early stage in her career Taylor knew how to craft a well rounded song.

#29. Christmas Tree Farm | Avg.6.593

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, ready for it, George.keh), Lowest Scores: 2: WinterFreeze, Bjork)

At #29 is 'Christmas Tree Farm', released in December 2019 as a stand-alone single, it received positive reviews and charted in several countries worldwide including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, UK & USA. Taylor wrote, recorded and released the song in 6 days & its not bad considering, a nice joyful little number with its winter jazzy intro, before bursting into a infectious X-Mas tune in similar vein to a certain Mariah Carey X-Mas track (but for the life of me can't remember which one happy.gif). Although I do feel its a little too high on here & maybe in years to come it will become more of a X-Mas staple.

#28. Look What You Made Me Do | Avg.6.625

Highest Scores: 11: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, ready for it), Lowest Scores; -1/0: (WinterFreeze, Bjork)

At #28 is the infamous 'Look What You Made Me Do', released in August 2017 as the lead single from her 6th studio album 'Reputation'. This was Swift's big comeback after a 1 year hiatus and received a polarized response from music critics, but nonetheless it broke a string of records, including the record for the most plays in a single day on Spotify & became massive commercial success by topping the charts in several countries worldwide such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK & USA. I actually really like this song, yes its certainly darker & angrier than anything she's done before with thinly veiled barbs are some of her enemies, but you gotta admit its very bold with some fun inventive hooks that do show some artistic progression, she really takes risks here and while it may not fully pay off, its still a very catchy.

Christmas Tree Farm is a bop. LWYMMD less so, but it's alright. Not really big losses for me though! ohmy.gif

EDIT: Maybe CTF deserved top 20 actually.

Posted by: Jade 19th March 2020, 09:58 PM

'Look What You Make Me Do' deserves better sad.gif my appreciation for it has dropped a little since it came out but I still gave it an 8. 'Christmas Tree Farm' is really cute as well, probably one of my favourite festive songs of the 2010s already tbh

Posted by: Bjork 19th March 2020, 10:09 PM

won't complain cos those 2 are my least favourites of her together with Me

LWYMMD should have been a one-off single, never an album lead... love when Taylor makes little tongue'n'cheek songs about her past relationships, but not when it's drama about labels and feuds and enemies, cannot relate at all... but worst, the song has no melody at all, I love her regular songs even 99% of the time she uses the same chords, but LWYMMD is like one chord repeated to infinity, there is not even song structure biggrin.gif

LWYMMD way too high xx Imagine giving that an 11.

#27. White Horse | Avg.6.812

Highest Scores: 10: (WinterFreeze), Lowest Scores: 3: (Tawdry Hepburn)

At #27 is 'White Horse', released in December 2008 as the 2nd single from her 2nd studio album 'Fearless' & received positive reviews & won 2 awards at the 2010 Grammy Awards for 'Best Country Song' & 'Best Female Country Vocal Performance'. The song also performed well commercially, although not on the level of the lead single 'Love Story'. It peaked at #13 on the US Top 100 and #2 on the US Country charts, spending 22 weeks on the charts and went 2x Platinum with sales of 2 Million copies. The track also charted in 3 other countries with top 50 peaks in Australia & Canada, as well top 75 in the UK in 2009 where it was released as the 3rd single following 'Teardrops On My Guitar' there. A beautiful yet simple heartbreaking ballad, done with impressive subtlety that turns the fairy tale imagey of her previous single on its head. Even at this early stage in her career Taylor digs deeper into those romantic tropes and give us a look at the emptiness of symbolic gestures.

#26. Should've Said No | Avg.6.843

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, George.keh), Lowest Scores: 3: (Jack)

At #26 we say goodbye to our first album era with 'Should've Said No', released in May 2008 as the 5th and final single from her self-titled debut album & became a further success for her as it became her 2nd #1 on the US Country Charts and peaked at #33 on the US Top 100, becoming the album's 5th top 40 hit and went onto sell over 1.5 Million copies , earning a Platinum status. The song also became her first to chart outside the USA & Canada by managing a top 20 successful peak in New Zealand. Don't think I would've ranked this as the best from her debut album, but it is a rather decent tune with its Country twang which lends a playful edge to a pop/rock sound where she addresses the wrong doing on a former lover before shutting him down completely in the chorus which kinda comes across more whiny than entirely convincing. However on the whole its a fun bit of early Country Taylor.

Highest Scores: 11: (JosephInSpace), 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it), Lowest Scores: 0: (blacksquare, Tawdry Hepburn)

At #25 we lose a big one here 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together', released in August 2012 as the lead single from her 4th studio album 'Red' and became an instant commercial success by becoming her first #1 on the US Top 100, as well as topping the charts in Canada & New Zealand, while reaching top 5 peaks in Australia, Japan, Ireland, South Korea, Israel as well as the UK, making this her first top 10 hit since 2009 and what would be the start of her being a staple on the charts there. The single received overall positive reviews, while some were sceptical for moving into a full on Pop sound, but nonetheless it still ranks as one of her best selling singles with worldwide sales of 7 Million.

Despite moving into quite a different genre (for her) Taylor still doesn't her connection to her audience, sounding revitalized, smarter & tougher than before on this infectious little number laden with a rousing chorus & that constant guitar loop which is almost as iconic as the song itself. The sense of joy here is so perfectly engineered & just a well crafted pop song that makes this a brilliant re-introduction if you will to the force that is Taylor Swift.

#24. Fifteen | Avg.6.968

Highest Scores: 9.5/9: (Jonjo, ready for it, Riser), Lowest Scores: 4: (Tawdry Hepburn, Bjork)

At #24 is 'Fifteen', released in August 2009 as the 4th single from her 2nd studio album 'Fearless'. The song was inspired by her very first experience of heartbreak at her freshman year of high school along with her best friend Abigail Anderson. After writing it she asked her friend for authorization to record the song (due to personal references in the song) and of course the rest is history. Upon release the song reached a peak of #23 on the US Top 100 and sold over 1.5 Million digital downloads & certified 2x Platinum. Elsewhere the song managed to chart in both Canada & Australia, making top 20 & top 50 peaks respectively.

This track is a key example of Taylor's early success with its watertight structure and the fact that her lyrics feel like realistic reflections of adolescence. Which makes this really embody the relatable innocence & vulnerability that has always been the core of her appeal. It also helps having a well crafted melody that's very infectious along with the mostly acoustic background really helps you visualize the narration of the song.

#23. Safe & Sound [Ft The Civil Wars] | Avg.7.062

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, Jade), Lowest Scores: 2: (Riser)

At #23 is the last non-album single to feature here 'Safe & Sound' which features alternative Country duo The Civil Wars, taken from 'The Hunger Games' soundtrack & released as a single in December 2011. The song is a departure from her previous Country/Pop releases, going for a moody Folk ballad & alternative Country sound. Upon release it was critically lauded & performed well on the charts by peaking at #30 on the US Top 100 & sold 1.9 Million copies and earning a 2x Platinum certification. Elsewhere it charted best in New Zealand at #11 while making top 40 peaks in Canada & Australia as well as charting in the top 75 in the UK.

This was a very interesting career path for Taylor at the time with its earthy simplistic folky style which creates a rather haunting & atmospheric landscape. But Taylor's breathy yet brittle vocals blends rather well with the duo's distinctive sound. Obviously she wouldn't fully take this direction for future releases, but once was more than enough in this case as while the track is eerily beautiful; the high notes don't entirely work with her vocal strength, but the duo's hushed harmonies blends well together & on the whole she makes it work and shows she can work in a variety of different emotional palettes in her career. On the whole I would definitely say that this is her best soundtrack single to date.

I remember listening to 'Fifteen' when I was about 12 and now I'm the same age as her song '22'... time flies

I am done. cry.gif Safe & Sound deserves so much better, there's just something so understated about the song that makes it absolutely beautiful and stunning heart.gif The melodies are gorgeous and I still go back to it all the time. Completely robbed off the Oscar, let alone being snubbed for a nom mad.gif at least the Globes knew the tea that year.

Should've Said No is by far the best on self titled and has aged the best on that album as well, a banger and I loved the Bad Blood mash-up on Rep tour! WANEGBT is such a fun lead single and is iconic *.* White Horse and Fifteen are good but both are FAR too high, meh

Christmas Tree Farm is a future classic for me, I'm lowkey still listening to it atm kink.gif Just SO joyous and great and christmassy aha, think it'll be my fave Xmas song overtime <3 and LWYMMD is just amazing, honestly it's aged so well for me, is my go to angry song and the video is just something else *.* I could probs write an essay on that song <3

#22. Sparks Fly | Avg.7.218

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, blacksquare), Lowest Scores: 4: (Bjork)

At #22 is 'Sparks Fly', a song wrote by Taylor when she was 16 years old, prior to the release of her debut single in 2006. Following a 2007 live performance of the track, it grew in popularity amongst Swift's fanbase. While she was recording her third album, she received requests by fans to include it on the album. The track later got released in July 2011 as the 5th single from her 3rd studio album 'Speak Now' & peaked at #17 on the US Top 100, as well as topping the US Country charts with sales of over 1.1 Million & earning a Platinum certification.

The track is interesting largely as an early demonstration of how Taylor's song-writing style was formed, which helps it stand out amongst the other tracks on the album simply because she wrote it when she was 16 with its overly melodramatic lyrics that does lend the whole thing a certain charm that captures the thrill and excitement of staring a new relationship set against a bubbly well crafted Country/Pop production which helps the whole soar. Always wondered why this never received a proper music video unlike the other singles from the album, maybe it was because that it wasn't meant to be included on the album in the first place, only down to the fans wanting it there. Well anyway its a more than welcome addition to not only 'Speak Now' but to Taylor's wonderful discography.

#21. Ready For It | Avg.7.406

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, ready for it, Tawdry Hepburn, Jade), Lowest Scores: 0: (WinterFreeze)

Just lingering outside the top 20 is 'Ready For It', released in September 2017 as the 2nd single from her 6th studio album ;Reputation'. The track received positive reviews who cited it as an improvement over the previous single and upon release the song performed well despite a somewhat messy release with top 5 peaks in Australia & USA, along with top 10 peaks in Canada, Hungary, Malaysia, New Zealand and UK, then finally top 20 peaks in Ireland & Lebanon.

If I have to honest...this doesn't rank as one of my faves by Taylor, but of positive note I do like the big brash hooks & the anthemic chorus, however its the jarring distorted production that brings things down, along with the stodgy dated dub-step that tries too hard to be dark, but feels unconvincing & just find it hard to enjoy it. The ill-advised bars & cringey rapping which doesn't flow well together at all. Although I would say that the music video is pretty awesome, but the song itself is more style over substance.

#20. The Story of Us | Avg.7.437

Highest Scores: 10: (JosephInSpace), Lowest Scores: 4.5: (Nick F1)

Kicking off the top 20 is 'The Story of Us', released in April 2011 as the 4th single from her 3rd studio album "Speak Now". This track was something of a departure sound-wise for Taylor at the time in which it mixes Pop/Punk into her more familiar Country sound which met with mixed reviews by critics & became a moderate hit upon release by peaking at #41 on the US Top 100, becoming her first too miss the top 40, but still managed to sell over a Million copies & earn a Platinum certification. Elsewhere it also charted in Canada & the Belgian Ultratip chart.

This was the first indication of Taylor heading away from her usual Nashville Country roots to a more full on Pop sound, with chugging guitars & something approaching a post punk disco beat that dominates the whole thing. Full of high energy pep with fast paced bombastic verses which makes the lyrics really pop. This was an interesting little experiment for Taylor during her early years, but thankfully she would go on to make better singles in the same vein than this. As it stands this is a fine jumping off point.

'The Story Of Us' is fantastic, it really reminds me of Paramore actually so that was a welcome brief departure for her!

Sparks Fly and Ready For It are both incredible and both probs around where I'd place them as well! <3 I'm both shocked that the former isn't lower and the latter isn't higher though. The Speak Now singles acc all did better than I expected! And RFI has won the Reputation rate both times & is loved around here so I am shocked Delicate toppled it and also thought it'd be top 15 minimum ohmy.gif

The Story of Us was a 13 year-old fave and even tho I still love it, I wouldn't have it this high haha.

#19. Bad Blood [Ft Kendrick Lemar] | Avg.7.468

Highest Scores: 10: (Jade), Lowest Scores: 2: (George.keh)

At #19 we finally lose one of her '89 singles 'Bad Blood', released in May 2015 as the 4th single from her 5th studio album '1989'. Remixed from it's original album form to feature American rapper Kendrick Lemar & lyrically deals with the betrayal by a close friend (mmm wonder who that was), while the album version received a mixed response, the newly remixed version was acclaimed by critics & became a huge commercial success by topping the charts in several countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand & USA becoming her 4th to do so there, as well as top 5 peaks in South Africa, Lebanon & UK.

Getting Kendrick Lemar to do guest vocals on this track was a stroke of genius - his verses are potent & effective, as did stripping back the arrangement, leaving only beats and electronics on what was originally a pretty standard album track was a wise move that definitely makes the chorus feel more anthemic. However while I complimented the production side of things, the song itself is bit of a lyrical mess with a rather grating hook that barely feels like Taylor's work at all. While I do agree the single version is far better than the album version, I'd still say that this was one of her weakest efforts to date.

#18. 22 | Avg.7.5

Highest Scores: 10: (Monzo, SamJudd), Lowest Scores: 1.5: (George.keh)

At #18 is "22" (if that makes any sense), released in March 2013 as the 4th single from her 4th studio album "Red". The song, which describes the joys of being 22 years old, became part of a cultural phenomenon as celebrities and social media users began using its lyrics to celebrate their twenty-second birthdays. Upon release the song performed well on the US Top 100 by reaching the top 20, making this her 18th top 20 hit in total & going onto sell over 2.3 Million copies there. Elsewhere it performed better in the UK by reaching the top 10, as well as top 5 peaks in Israel, Belgium (Flanders) & South Africa, then top 20 peaks in Ireland, Lebanon & Canada.

Now this is a pure pop ditty greatness that kicks off with a twangy acoustic guitar before coming in with a thundering chorus & cool bubblegum synth beats that drives the entire track along at a brisk pace with her characteristic sharpness. Definitely one of her best non-romantic tracks in which she's more known for, its nice to see her change things up a little once in a while with something that's about having fun. Not everything has to have a deeper meaning to it & this is just a good time; however I do feel that this gets overlooked quite often by people other than Swift fans, but on the whole its still a fine number.

#17. Shake It Off | Avg.7.562

Highest Scores: 11: (Bjork), 10: (Monzo, FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it, JosephInSpace), Lowest Scores: 1: (WinterFreeze)

At #17 we lose the biggest hit of Taylor's career to date 'Shake It Off', released in August 2014 as the lead single from her 5th studio album '1989' & would mark a major departure from her earlier Country sound, while the last album also started too move away from that sound (but still had in there), this era would move away from it completely & while there are mixed reactions; it didn't stop this from becoming a huge smash hit by debuting at #1 on the US Top 100 & go onto sell over 10 Million copies there & earn a Diamond certification. Elsewhere it also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Hungary, New Zealand, Poland & Slovakia, then top 5 peaks in several other countries such as the UK where it would go onto sell over 1.6 Million copies & also being her biggest seller to date.

The song's impact speaks for itself, not only was this an obvious sure-fire hit, but it shot Taylor well & truly up there with the all-time biggest female singers on a global scale. Full of sharp tongued wit & a catchy chorus that's hard to dislodge from your brain, as well being full of irresistible up-beat hooks that makes it a near perfect pop song, although the over-play did cause annoyance, but it's still a great little pop track, it's also worth noting that this was the perfect track to introduce the almighty "1989" era, which I think we can all agree that not only was it her most successful era, but also her best & due to its level of greatness she's really struggled to keep up with ever since.

#16. You Need To Calm Down | Avg.7.625

Highest Scores: 11: (Nick F1), 10: (Monzo, ready for it, Jack), Lowest Scores: 0: (WinterFreeze)

At #16 is "You Need To Calm Down", released in June 2019 as the 2nd single from her 7th studio album "Lover". The track addresses homophobia and her detractors in the song while simultaneously voicing her support for the LGBTQ+ community. Upon release music critics were divided with some praising it while others found it's message confusing & cynical. But nonetheless the song became a success by debuting at #2 on the US Top 100, becoming the album's 2nd top 2 hit & like its predecessor it was blocked from the top spot by "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X (ft Billy Ray Cyrus). Elsewhere it also made top 5 peaks Australia, Canada, Hungary, Malaysia, Ireland, Lebanon & UK, becoming her 13th top 10 hit there.

Wow this has done pretty well considering the lead could only scrape the bottom 50 of this rate. I think its fair to say that this follow up is a vast improvement & certainly more creative with its message that adds some value to her extensive discography. Featuring some elastic bass, bright synths & some fun electro pop production which gives it that perfect summery feel. Taylor definitely shows growth & progression with this & while I do commend her for the song's message, however I can't help feel that she sort of misses the point in its lyrical structure & kinda comes across more as clunky & quite clumsy in its execution. Although I did like the music video (really enjoyed the cameos), despite the obvious pandering & even that Katy Perry scene got lost in the shuffle & felt like an obvious attempt at grabbing headlines instead of being something genuine. On the whole its still a pretty fine & effective pop song, although a little wordy, its still a fine effort.

#15. Back To December | Avg.7.718

Highest Scores: 11: (Riser), 10: (SamJudd, JosephInSpace), Lowest Scores: 4: (Nick F1, Bjork)

At #15 is the beautiful Country ballad "Back To December", released in November 2010 as the 2nd single from her 3rd studio album "Speak Now". Lyrically the song deals with a remorseful plea for forgiveness for breaking up with a former lover, which makes this the first time Taylor's ever apologized to a former boyfriend in a form of a song (normally she scorns them). It is often speculated to be about actor Taylor Lautner, which was actually later confirmed by the actor himself in an interview in 2016. Upon release the track received critical acclaim & became a commercial success by peaking at #6 on the US Top 100, while faring better on the US Country charts by peaking at #3 & going onto sell over 2 Million copies there. Elsewhere it was a moderate hit by hitting top 10 in Canada while making top 30 peaks in Australia & New Zealand.

A beautifully produced and subtly orchestral ballad that sets a really nice somber tone, as well as putting an intriguing angle of casting Taylor as the humbled heartbreaker rather than being the one whose spurned, which puts a rather interesting spin on things on a ballad that's both pensive & catchy. While this was a big step for her at time, but I wouldn't call this ground-breaking, but it does show her evolving sensitivity & how masterful she has become as a singer, very matured as her vocals really shines throughout on this lovely little number & a true standout in her brilliant discography.

#14. Mean | Avg.7.843

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, WinterFreeze), Lowest Scores: 4 (Nick F1)

At #14 is another slice of Country Taylor "Mean", released in March 2011 as the 3rd single from her 3rd studio album "Speak Now". The song garnered positive reviews for its lyrical detail and profound country sound & became a commercial success by peaking at #11 on the US Top 100 as well as reaching #2 on the US Country charts & went onto sell over 2.5 Million copies. Elsewhere it hit top 10 in Canada & charted in the top 50 in Australia. Later the song went onto win 2 Grammys for 'Best Country Song' & Best Country Solo Performance, while also being ranked by 'Rolling Stone' at #24 on their list of the 100 greatest Country songs of all-time, the highest ranking for a song released in the 21st century and only one of three to be released in the 2010s.

What's not to like about this a defiantly upbeat anti-bullying anthem with infectious top-tapping guitar strums & of course Taylor's playful vocals over it's Bluegrass acoustic flavoured production that makes the whole thing joyful with a naturally appealing melody. This also shows a rare moment of vulnerability in its lyrics as well as being funny and extremely self-aware. On the whole all of these things make for a very strong Country/Pop tune, a fire highlight in her early career.

#13. Mine | Avg.7.937

Highest Scores: 10: (SamJudd, JosephInSpace), Lowest Scores: 4: (Nick F1, Bjork)

At #13 we say goodbye to the last of the "Speak Now" era singles with "Mine", released in August 2010 as that album's lead single & following an unauthorized leak of the song it was released 2 weeks earlier than intended. Upon release the song received mostly positive reviews & became a huge success by debuting at #3 on the US Top 100 with 297,000 digital downloads sold in its first week, which makes this the 8th eighth-biggest debut sales week ever for a digital song. This also made Taylor the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 to debut multiple tracks in the top five during a calendar year after Mariah Carey did so in 1995. Elsewhere it was a moderate success with top 10 peaks in Japan, Canada & Australia, top 20 peaks in New Zealand and Hungary, as well as top 40 peaks in UK, Ireland & Belgium (Wallonia).

This is a good steady choice for a lead single with this twangy yet tender powerful Country/Pop track with a rousing chorus with some snappy lyrical storytelling sprinkled throughout. Also this is a firm reminder that she can capture the rhythms of a lasting relationship just as vividly as heartbreak, which proves her song-writing is still as strong as ever. Although this song while still great does have that hint of retreading old ground with its production that feels very similar to what was on her first 2 albums that gives you sense that she was reaching the limits of the Country/Pop sound that made her famous in the first place. Thankfully she would change things up with her next album, which would turn out to be a wise career move for her, as if she stayed in this lane, then she could have stagnated artistically & commercially, and not be where she is today.

#12. Love Story | Avg.7.968

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, George.keh, WinterFreeze), Lowest Scores: 2: (Tawdry Hepburn)

At #12 is the ever wonderful "Love Story", released in September 2008 as the lead single from her 2nd album "Fearless" . Widely considered as her signature song & was written solely by Taylor herself about a love interest who wasn't popular among her family & friends, because of the scenario she related the plot to 'Romeo & Juliet', but replacing the sad ending with a happy one. The song upon release received wide critical praise & became a huge commercial success by reaching #4 in the USA, becoming her first top 5 hit & went onto sell over 9 Million paid digital downloads, making this her one of her biggest sellers to date. Elsewhere it also became her international breakthrough by topping the Australian charts & hitting top 5 in UK, Ireland, Canada, Japan, New Zealand & Belgium (Flanders). With worldwide sales of over 15 Million, becoming one of the best selling singles of all-time.

Wow I am totally shocked that this missed the top 10 on here, thought it would have been a dead-cert, but oh well. Anyway this song is just fantastic & perhaps marked the moment of when her song-writing prowess fully revealed itself & while she obviously loves using that fairytale trope (especially on her early albums), however here the inflections are done well which lends that extra bit of drama to its romantic tone. This was first time that I got introduced to Taylor Swift & became an instant firm fan ever since with this stunning track that's a well deserved crossover hit which is full of her usual charm and just a perfect introduction to a worldwide audience.

#11. New Romantics | Avg.8.312

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, blacksquare, Jonjo), Lowest Scores: 5: (WinterFreeze)

At #11 and taking quite a leap average wise is "New Romantics", released in February 2016 as the 7th and final single from her 5th studio album "1989". Originally the track wasn't on the standard edition of the album, only on the deluxe version before eventually getting released in its own right. Upon release the song was universally praised by critics & became a moderate hit due it being on an album that was well over a year old & sold millions already by this point. In the USA it managed to reach a peak of #46, becoming the album's lowest charting single but still managed to sell over 500,000 digital downloads & earn a Gold certification (so not too bad for a single #7). Elsewhere it managed top 20 peaks in Iceland & Lebanon, top 40 peaks in Australia & Scotland, then elsewhere it scored minor dents in countries such as Canada, Japan, UK & France.

Wow there was a lot of love for this & didn't expect it to finish this high considering its not one of her biggest or most well known releases. This just goes to show how much high quality this & the amazing album its come from & considering it was relegated to bonus-track status just says something about how overstuffed with potential hits "1989" was. Definitely one of the album's strongest numbers & when this was announced as a single I was pleasantly surprised as how often do Deluxe tracks get a look in, more often than not their overshadowed & more or less forgotten. However bringing this to a wider audience was just swell with its galloping urgency, cool synths with hints of electro-pop & a rousing catchy chorus which just soars. All of which makes for a near perfect pop song.

A clue as to what will drop next

It was a top 10 hit in one country (UK or US), but not the other (UK or US)

There's 4 options to pick from, any guesses...

Posted by: StupidLove 4th April 2020, 01:15 AM

1989 really had an impeccable run of singles, the only thing I'd change is making Welcome To New York the last single over New Romantics. Still Shake It Off - Out Of The Woods is impressive.

Posted by: Riser 4th April 2020, 01:33 AM

Amazing result for New Romantics!! Red and The Man both top 10 heart.gif heart.gif

Posted by: Bjork 4th April 2020, 06:31 AM

wonder if Delicate could be a surprise winner? nice top 10, I would only change You Belong with Shake it off

Posted by: FUTURE NOSTALGIA 4th April 2020, 02:30 PM

I'm glad New Romantics overperfomed! <3 one of my Taylor faves and just pure-pop PERFECTION. Can't believe it was only a deluxe track and it getting a tour video aha :/ I feel like a new-romantics-like lead single for lover would've been perfect haha.

Love Story has such a major place in my heart and it still goes off every time I hear it when I'm out <3

so 10th can be any of You Belong With Me, Red, Style, Wildest Dreams or Lover. It def won't be the 1989 singles. I'll guess Red but I wouldn't be shocked if its YBWM after LS' underperformance

#10. Lover | Avg.8.343

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, George.keh, JosephInSpace), Lowest Scores: 5: (Monzo)

Kicking off the top 10 is one of Taylor's more recent efforts "Lover", released in August 2019 as the 3rd single from her 7th studio album of the same name & shows Taylor going back to her Country roots while incorporating indie-folk & Pop into the mix. The track received universal acclaim by music critics & became a commercial success by reaching #10 in the USA, becoming her 25th top 10 hit, while reaching top 5 peaks in Australia & New Zealand, top 10 in Lebanon, Canada & Ireland, along with top 20 peaks in 11 other countries including the UK becoming her 15th top 20 hit there to date. Three months after it was released the song was remixed to feature Canadian singer Shawn Mendes, as well as releasing a second remix with a reworked orchestral arrangement, titled "First Dance Remix". Both remixes received positive reviews from music critics.

Certainly one Taylor's most beautiful & strongest releases she's done in her recent years with its simple echoing acoustic arrangement, which makes this the first real standout from the 'Lover' era (especially after the hit & miss first 2 singles), with its smooth, swaying & elegant tone which really sets a romantic mood & while some may dismiss this as too sweet, but Taylor really prevents that from happening where she sets the mood so convincingly. Her vocals are warm & full of life on its stunning production. One can't help but feel that releasing this in the summer time was a bit odd as its far more fitting for Christmas time where it could have really been more appreciated.

Posted by: Bjork 5th April 2020, 08:25 AM

oh was expecting this to be higher, Lover is definitively better than You Belong or Red

Posted by: Nick F1 5th April 2020, 08:27 AM

You Need To Calm Down is that bitch. should have been much higher!

Rooting for I Knew You Were Trouble or Delicate to win!

Posted by: SamJudd 5th April 2020, 02:26 PM

Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly

#9. Red | Avg.8.437

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, blacksquare, Riser), Lowest Scores: 6: (WinterFreeze, Tawdry Hepburn, Bjork)

At #9 we have "Red", first released in October 2012 as the 2nd promotional single from her 4th studio album of the same name, then eventually released in June 2013 as the 5th official single. Upon release the song received polarizing reviews, but managed to become a success by debuting at #6 on the US Top 100, as well as hitting #2 on the US Country charts, becoming the album's 4th top 10 hit & went onto sell over 2 Million copies there. Elsewhere it was a moderate success by hitting top 5 in Canada, top 20 in New Zealand & top 40 peaks in Ireland, UK & Australia as well as minor peaks in 3 other countries.

One of the more pure Country tracks on the album that bridges the gap between past & future sounds with its mixed influences of a banjo up against stammering electronic vocal effects, melodramatic orchestration and stadium rock chorus which for a rather scattered, yet appealing track where the lyrics use colours and metaphors to describe an intense relationship is simple yet quite effective as Taylor's vocal delivery packs its usual charm and really sells the whole thing. On the whole its a decent number, but I don't know whether I'd rank it this high, but still a really good song & a definite highlight on an album that's packed to the brim with classic gems.

Posted by: Jade 5th April 2020, 02:34 PM

So pleased that 'Red' has finished as high as 9th *.* my second favourite song to come out of that era after 'I Knew You Were Trouble' heart.gif

#8. You Belong With Me | Avg.8.562

Highest Scores: 11: (Monzo), 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it, WinterFreeze, Jade), Lowest Scores: 4: (Bjork)

At #8 we not only say goodbye to the last of Taylor's Country tunes (meaning this is Buzzjack's fave), but we also lose our 3/7 eras. "You Belong With Me", released in April 2009 as the 3rd single from her 2nd album "Fearless" & was instantly labelled as one of the album's best tracks by fans and critics. Upon release the song became a huge success by reaching #2 on the US Top 100, surpassing the peak of its lead single there and went onto sell over 4.9 Million units and established the largest crossover radio audience since the year 2000. Elsewhere it also enjoyed success by reaching top 5 peaks in Canada, Australia & New Zealand, & top 20 peaks in Ireland, Japan & Slovakia, as well as top 40 peaks in UK, Hungary & Denmark. The song has become one of the biggest selling hits worldwide with sales of 7 Million as well as winning several awards, namely the infamous MTV Music Video awards where that incident with Kanye West happened (but I think we all know about that by now, don't we).

When this song won best video at the MTV Music Video awards, it provoked Kanye West so much - that his delusional belief that his ridiculous protest made her famous, despite the song selling millions of copies already by this point mmm. As for the song itself its a nice little well written tune about unrequited love in a high school setting with Taylor casting herself as the outcast instead of the cheerleader seems a bit insane (even back then), but she sings the impossibly catchy lyrics with such infectious conviction that you don't really question it. Along with its slick production & fun melody, Taylor's charm really shines through and makes it work. Definitely one of her strongest from this early period in her career.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 6th April 2020, 10:46 PM

Pleased 'Love Story' missed the top 10, it's a total cringe-fest.

Posted by: SamJudd 7th April 2020, 03:33 PM

I'm so sick of running as fast as I can...

#7. The Man | Avg.8.687

Highest Scores: 10: (Monzo, FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, Jack, Riser, Bjork, Jade), Lowest Scores: 6.5/6: (George.keh, Euphorique)

At #7 is Taylor's latest single "The Man", released in January 2020 as the 4th single from her 7th studio album "Lover", also making this the last from that era in this countdown. The song received critical acclaim upon release with praise towards its lyrics about sexism and women empowerment. In honour of International Women's Day of this year the song was added to playlists on streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal. The song's success mainly came from the release of its parent album and charted well in several countries due to strong digital downloads. It peaked at #23 in the USA becoming the album's 4th consecutive top 40 hit, while reaching top 20 peaks in New Zealand, Ireland & Australia as well as top 40 peaks in several countries namely Canada, UK, Lithuania & Norway. Although by the time it finally got released it failed to make much impact, mainly due to its delayed release.

This song feels like such a wasted opportunity as it easily could have smashed if released last year, instead of waiting so long, WHY wasn't this the 2nd or 3rd single. Definitely one of her catchiest bops to date where lyrically it captures the deadweight double-standard she has been judged by from the start. This anthem showcases her talents at its highest level with its synthetic dance sound, dynamic synths & crunchy electronic production along Taylor's monotone vocal delivery which totally sells it. On the whole a great feminist anthem that's not only empowering, but fun as hell and an interesting topic to tackle along with its clever music video where she transforms into a male alter-ego which was just genius.

Posted by: Bjork 7th April 2020, 04:34 PM

The Man is too good to be a flop :/ her last 2 eras have been a mess when it comes to picking up singles

Posted by: StupidLove 7th April 2020, 06:35 PM

Shame The Man wasn't the lead single tbh, I hate ME

Posted by: Jonjo 7th April 2020, 06:39 PM

'The Man' is amazing. So, SO good. I imagine it won't be as high as this next time there's a singles rate because of it not being a hit. But what a bop!

Posted by: SamJudd 7th April 2020, 10:50 PM

My reputation's never been worse

#6. Delicate | Avg.8.812

Highest Scores: 10: (Monzo, FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it, George.keh, Jonjo, Riser, Bjork), Lowest Scores: 4: (WinterFreeze)

At #6 is the last of the "Reputation" singles with "Delicate", released in March 2018 as the 6th and final official single from that album. Upon release the song was instantly praised for its lyrical vulnerability and production, and was noted as an album highlight and became a sleeper hit in the USA by reaching #12 & ultimately spending 35 weeks on the chart, longer than any of the album's other singles and went onto sell over 2 Million copies. Elsewhere it was a moderate hit by reaching top 20 in Canada & top 40 peaks in Australia, Ireland & New Zealand, while reaching top 50 in the UK.

Certainly the musical opposite of the earlier singles, peeling back all the noise and showing off her more subdued side that's set against a gentle wash of electronics and equipped with a emotional yet killer chorus, along with her sensual & breathy vocals shows Taylor at her most tentative. Definitely much rather this side of her rather than trying to play the villain which wasn't entirely convincing or successful, the more vulnerable side plays better on what I think we can all agree is the best moment on 'Reputation', the more honest and direct approach was the best way to go.

Posted by: SamJudd 7th April 2020, 10:54 PM

This is what's to come in the top 5 =

I Knew You Were Trouble
Blank Space
Style
Wildest Dreams
Out Of The Woods

Thought's, Predictions do share...

Posted by: Bjork 8th April 2020, 05:46 AM

really thought Delicate would be at least top 3, easily the best song in Reputation, it's a really nice song to play on guitar, and for once she uses a different chord pattern

that's a surprising top 5, didn't see Style-Out of the woods-Wildest Dreams in the top 5
hope it's between Blank Space and Trouble, the other 3 are not as good imo

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 8th April 2020, 09:00 AM

YESSSS for 'Out of the Woods' being top 5. wub.gif It's a masterpiece.

'Blank Space' to win.

Posted by: Jade 8th April 2020, 09:06 AM

My favourite Taylor song + 4 from her best era overall cheeseblock.png what a top 5!

Posted by: StupidLove 8th April 2020, 10:20 AM

80% of the top 5 being from 1989, what an era

Posted by: Nick F1 8th April 2020, 07:51 PM

The Man is too high imo.

Posted by: Jonjo 8th April 2020, 08:04 PM

Wildest Dreams should not be top 5. It was always bottom 5 of '1989' for me </3 It's not awful or bad, just a bit "it's... nice"

So SO happy for Out Of The Woods (her best ever song) so I'm routing for that to win, but wouldn't argue with a 'Blank Space' or 'I Knew You Were Trouble' victory either. 'Style' is very good but it's actually pretty overrated. Like, it's good but not to the levels that the online hype bigs it up to be imo. So my preferred top 5 order owuld be

01. Out Of The Woods
02. Blank Space
03. I Knew You Were Trouble
04. Style
05. Wildest Dreams

---

I think it'll be:

01. Style
02. Blank Space
03. I Knew You Were Trouble
04. Out Of The Woods
05. Wildest Dreams

Posted by: George.keh 8th April 2020, 08:42 PM

style to win! probs my second fave song ever

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 8th April 2020, 10:16 PM

I'd like it to go...

5. Wildest Dreams
4. Style
3. Out of the Woods (although I wouldn't mind 2nd actually)
2. I Knew You Were Trouble
1. Blank Space

I think it'll go...

5. Out of the Woods
4. Wildest Dreams
3. Style
2. I Knew You Were Trouble
1. Blank Space

#5. Style | Avg.9.062

Highest Scores: 11: (George.keh, Euphorique), 10: (SamJudd, blacksquare, Jack), Lowest Scores: 7.5: (Riser)

Kicking off the top 5 with "Style", released in February 2015 as the 3rd single from her 5th studio album "1989" & garnered generally positive reviews from critics, many of whom deemed it the album's highlight. The song was originally written by producer Ali Payami and guitarist Niklas Ljungfelt for themselves. However after Taylor overheard it she decided to record it herself. Upon release the song became a success by reaching #6 on the US Top 100, becoming the album's 3rd top 10 hit, while also reaching top 10 peaks in Australia & Canada, as well as top 20 peaks in Czech Republic, New Zealand, Poland, Hungary & Slovakia.

Talk about a turnaround after this won the "1989" rate, here it could only muster a top 5 peak which is still a great result. This exquisite slinky synthy song wows just about on every level with its jagged guitar grooves & beautiful tones as well as features a lyric that offers an intriguingly ambiguous depiction of a toxic relationship. The track really pops is when it hits the chorus where her vocals shows real growth and maturity in this soulful little pop number and redefines her transition into a classy pop sound. Just a brilliant song on the whole & definitely up there as one of her greatest and shining moments.

Posted by: Bjork 9th April 2020, 06:26 AM

Style is just ok for me, I wouldn't even put it on my top 10, same as Wildest Dreams, nice songs but lack something in the lyrics, which are ok, but cannot relate

hope Wildest Dreams is next, not top 5 material

think it's gonna be:
1 Blank space
2 Trouble
3 Out of the woods

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 9th April 2020, 03:00 PM

It's annoying how 'Style' missed out on a higher UK peak due to her aversion to streaming at that time.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 9th April 2020, 06:17 PM

I thought Style would’ve been top 3!

I love it tbh. Where would it have peaked I wonder had it been on streaming sites. It was top 10 on sales for a weeks wasn’t it. Probably would’ve added to her tally of top ten hits from the 1989 era.

Posted by: Jonjo 9th April 2020, 06:25 PM

That's a big surprise to me. But its a great song. Just not as great as it's made out to be.

Posted by: Jonjo 9th April 2020, 06:27 PM

Interesting that Wildest Dreams came 2nd to Style in the 1989 rate... hmm.. I really hope WD doesn't win now mellow.gif

#4. Out Of The Woods | Avg.9.187

Highest Scores: 11: (Jonjo), 10: (Monzo, FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, blacksquare, WinterFreeze, Tawdry Hepburn, Jade), Lowest Scores: 6.5: (Euphorique)

At #4 is "Out Of The Woods" , released in January 2016 as the 6th single from her 5th studio album "1989". The song was written and produced by Taylor & Jack Antonoff of Fun, along with Max Martin producing her vocals. It originally served as the album first promo single back in October 2014, along with 'Welcome To New York' which followed as the 2nd & garnered universal acclaim and became a success by debuting at #18 on the US Top 100, becoming her 61st song to enter the American Billboard charts, making her the female artist to have the second most charted songs on the Hot 100, behind Aretha Franklin. However by the time it was finally released it couldn't out-peak its original placing but still managed to sell over a Million copies. Elsewhere it managed top 10 peaks in New Zealand & Canada, top 20 in Australia & top 40 peaks in Spain, Denmark & Hungary, making this a moderate success considering the album had been out over 14 months by this point.

The release of this was a nice welcomed surprise considering most of us thought the era came to a natural end with the last single 'Wildest Dreams', but extending it further with this marvellous epic number that transcends Taylor into an exciting & mature new direction with pristine synths & the breathless urgency of the rapid fire chorus that's surrounded by a forest of drums and bold instrumentations which takes a life of its own in its stomping percussions, dazzling electronics & just creating something very special. This definitely stands as one of her most interesting & cinematic releases to date.

HOW does Blandest Dreams finish so high!? WTH.

OOTW getting #4, I'll take it!

Posted by: Sharon 🍷 10th April 2020, 01:58 AM

whew I'm behind. I am SHOCKED that OOTW did that well but I adore it <3 I love Style but it's always been a lil-bit overrated for me (still a 10 tho), I'd probs have it around 25-30 section for me personally, I did think it'd finish top 3 here!

Delicate and The Man really over performing, wouldn't have predicted either as the highest songs from their eras ohmy.gif Glad to see Delicate gaining more and more love here and on other sites despite it only being a hit in America, one of Taylor's absolute best for me and it hits me so hard <3 (Also I accidentally stumbled on the hotel they used for the video when I was in LA which was life-giving for me!!!!). The Man is such a bop and again I'm surprised it did so well here, beating Lover as well! Lover is gorgeous and I'm glad it made the top 10 <3

YBWM is an all-time classic and Red is incredible, I always love how well Red manages to do in these rates, one of her best songs <3

hoping for a Wildest Dreams win, followed by IKYWT and BS. Guessing the results will be the opposite order but I love all 3 and I acc wouldn't be too shocked at any combination or order for these songs.

I think it peaked outside the top 10 on sales. I think it would've been a top 15 hit for her.

I wish 'Out of the Woods' had been an earlier single to give it the chance it deserved. It's spellbinding.

#3. Wildest Dreams | Avg.9.25

Highest Scores: 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, SamJudd, ready for it, Jack, WinterFreeze, JosephInSpace, Riser, Eupgorique, Jade), Lowest Scores: 8: (Nick F1, blacksquare, Tawdry Hepburn, Jonjo, Bjork)

At #3 is "Wildest Dreams", released in August 2015 as the 5th single from her 5th studio album "1989" & upon release it received mixed reviews where it was noted to having similarities to the works of Lana Del Rey namely her song "Without You", but nonetheless the song became a smash hit on the US Top 100 by reaching #5, not only making this the album's 5th top 10 hit in a row, but its peak position made her only the fourth artist to have at least one single peak at each position of Billboard's top 10 as the lead performer (after Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Madonna). Elsewhere it hit top 10 in several countries namely Australia, Canada, South Africa & New Zealand, as well as top 40 peaks mostly everywhere else.

Yes the comparisons to a certain Miss Del Rey are there, but Taylor does it effectively with this classy sweeping synth laden number, with a smart & pleasing twist that has an almost haunting tone to it. This song is just stunning where it tells the story of a doomed tryst with Taylor's breathless & sultry vocals & an epic & grand production that's so captivating that it leaves such a lasting impression upon first listen. I was so glad when this got picked as a single as its a wonderful addition to her discography and an instant classic.

thats a good top 2
Wildest Dreams is nice but it's a 8/10 song not a 10/10 song, don't get the Lana comparison either

'Wildest Dreams' is a lovely song, but it's not her 3rd best. Absolutely no way.

#2. Blank Space | Avg.9.25

Highest Scores: 11: (SamJudd, blacksquare, WinterFreeze, Tawdry Hepburn), 10: (FUTURE NOSTALGIA, Jack, Jonjo, Bjork), Lowest Scores: 6.5: (Nick F1)

At the runner up spot is "Blank Space", I bet this comes as a shock to many, considering this era has dominated the top end of the countdown then fall at the last hurdle by a single point. Released in November 2014 as the 2nd single from her 5th studio album "1989" & received universal acclaim by fans & critics and became an instant smash hit. In the USA it topped the charts within' 3 weeks of release following on from the lead single, she became the first woman in the Hot 100's 56-year history to succeed herself at the top spot. Worldwide the song was equally successful by topping the charts in Australia, Canada, Iceland, Scotland & South Africa as well as top 5 peaks in several countries including New Zealand, Poland, Ireland & UK. With over 11 Million copies sold worldwide this is easily one of the biggest selling singles of all-time.

This definitely helped Taylor further her career in mainstream pop music with this dare I say it perfect masterpiece in pop that's driven in synths, an effortless melody, catchy sharp hooks & clever lyrics in where she not only acknowledges her public image but reclaims her own narrative in such a self deprecating style and yet still bares all the hallmarks that made her famous in the first place, which may be the smartest move she's made in her career so far. On the whole this song is just great with its minimalist arrangement that's expertly crafted into something great & something she may never better again.

#01. I Knew You Were Trouble | Avg.9.312

So there you have it, Buzzjack's favourite Taylor Swift single is...."I Knew You Were Trouble", released in December 2012 as the 3rd single from her 4th studio album [i]["Red"/i]. It was written by Taylor herself along with Max Martin & Shellback with production handled by the latter two. Upon release the song received generally positive reviews from music critics, who commended its mainstream appeal yet noted Swift's experimentation with dubstep as relatively limited. The track was a huge commerical success on the charts, in the US it reached #2, becoming her 14th top 10 hit & elsewhere it also reached top 5 peaks in several countries such as Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand & Ireland. Making this one of her biggest performing hits to date.

While I personally wouldn't rank this as my #1 fave Taylor Swift song, its still a great track that makes a statement of artistic intent with its chaotic production (which Taylor wanted), taut new wave guitars & a dubstep influenced chorus that shouldn't really work, but here its all held together by a sparkling melody which really makes the whole thing work beautifully & shows how versatile of an artist she really is. On the whole this track is a well crafted spiky slice of her characteristic pop music where its message not only feels intimate yet universal, all of which makes for a worthy #1 song on this countdown.

two iconic songs! tho I wish Wildest Dreams snatched the win considering how close it was!! (or OOTW for the shock)

also the video/radio version of Wildest Dreams is one of the best things Taylor's ever done <3

Great top 2! Coulda done without 'Wildest Dreams' in the top 3 though (low top 20/top 30 woulda sufficed x).

Thank you for hosting Sam! wub.gif

Poor Blank Space not winning with that many 11s! Kinda surprising that only 3 or 4 songs in the top 10 got an 11 from anyone, but that could be a testament to the strength of Taylor's discography I suppose. Thanks for doing this!

Posted by: Bjork 17th April 2020, 05:37 AM

great top 2, was expecting the opposite result so Trouble winning is a nice surprise, both great songs

'Blank Space' is her absolute best as far as I'm concerned, but I can't begrudge IKYWT.
