Life Got Cold was actually the first single of theirs I bought (even though I went back and bought all the singles eventually) but being the ballad lover that I am this was the first song I was obsessed with. I think it was also the first time my Nicola loving became more apparent too as she seemed to have a lot more vocals in this song than the previous two, so underrated.

Then again I didn't know about Girls Aloud at that time.
Looking back at their discography, I still LOVE "No good advice", such a feisty gem "Life got cold" I love as well, and for the "Jump" I love it thanks to their tours, it's always one of the most exciting performances live! Joseph, what do you think of adding pictures from 2003 to your post? It would be funny to see them back then AND performances ! This post has been edited by Hayzayy: Apr 28 2014, 07:29 AM |

That's a fab idea! I'll sort it out when I get home later. In the meantime, feel free to post any pictures or performances of your own!
2003 was when I first discovered Girls Aloud. I know I've told this story before, but I bought their album without even knowing who they were, I just decided I wanted it when I was a kid LOL. Best decision of my life though tbh. Always loved the album, Some Kind of Miracle was one of my favourites (and still is) and I hoped it would be a single. They were only the second music act I liked, after S Club 7 |

'No Good Advice' could never be beaten for me, that blew my mind when I first heard it.
I did like 'Life Got Cold' but felt they were on a gradual slope downwards at that point, 'Jump' kind of convinced me they may be a force to be reckoned with when I saw how that did, I was obsessed with that at the time too and I consider it my second favourite Girls Aloud song. |

Despite being a huge fan of Popstars: The Rivals I sort of forgot about the girls until 'Life Got Cold' in the summer of 2003. For me it's still one of their best!
In the September I won a local radio competition that bagged me VIP tickets to a stadium concert that the girls performed at alongside Westlife, Mark Owen and LISA SCOTT-LEE to name a few others. In fact I think it was the first event that reunited all the Popstars: The Rivals girls as Clea (remember them?) and Javine also performed. I met all of GA backstage and will always remember Sarah staying to sign an autograph despite being ushered on stage (I think they were running late). I received the SOTU album in the goodie bag. 'Girls Allowed' was an instant hit with me and I still wish that had been the album title, ha! I was hooked from then on and received the SOTU reissue in my Christmas stocking. |

Life Got Cold is the only single of theirs I own physically after some guy was giving all his singles away for free at a carboot sale so I thought why not! This was years ago though, I was about 9 haha.
No Good Advice The song that started my obsession with Girls Aloud! I had Easy Karaoke 2003 and discovered it on there! I then noticed my friend had NOW 55 and I was dying to borrow it just for that song. |

Totally the right single choices, I'm so glad 'Some Kind Of Miracle' wasn't a single in the end!

Obviously the year didn't get off to a good start, re: Cheryl, and also the Popstars: The Rivals tour was cancelled, so I feared that Girls Aloud wouldn't get much success beyond their debut hit. I didn't give them much thought from January to March; they slipped off my radar after Christmas.
I was stunned when I first heard 'No Good Advice'! I absolutely loved it - it completely exceeded my expectations, and I had a firm belief that they were certainly not going to be one hit wonders. It was in this year that I got my first mp3 player and I discovered that you could download music files from the net. I thought it was amazing that I could have the song well in advance of the physical release. I remember being quite disappointed that the single "only" reached #2, because I was so convinced that it would get to #1. 'Ignition' by R. Kelly held it off, I think? It feels weird to me that 'No Good Advice' came out 11 years ago. 2003 really doesn't seem that long ago to me. Although it wound up being my least favourite album, I had a lot of love for 'Sound Of The Underground' over the summer of 2003. I remember that they did a signing for the album at Merry Hill shopping centre, and I really wanted to go, but I couldn't... if memory serves me correctly, it was on a weekday, so I was at school! That album was beaten to #1 by Justin Timberlake's 'Justified', so again I was disappointed that they missed out on #1. I know #2 is a fantastic position, but for them to be so near yet so far with both the single and album was just annoying. 'Life Got Cold' was midweek #2 I think, but I found it quite cool that it got to #3 in the end, so they went 1-2-3 with their first three singles. There were legitimate distribution problems with the CD2 version, which may have been the factor that cost them the #2 spot, oops! They opened with just under 32k, and Lemar was at #2 was on 33k, so it was pretty close. I really loved 'Jump', and was highly irritated when it was beaten to the top by Westlife's 'Mandy' - especially considering that Louis Walsh managed both, so it just seemed like he was deliberately shooting Girls Aloud in the foot! This was way before it emerged that Louis Walsh didn't really manage GA properly at all. 'Jump' actually went on to have a better chart run and sold more copies overall, so all's well that ends well. I was a bit dismayed when the re-issue of 'SOTU' only reached #42, but nevertheless it sold quite strongly over Christmas. I was feeling worried towards the end of this year that Girls Aloud weren't too safe with their label; I seem to remember that there were rumours that they could be dropped (and they later stated in their 2008 book that they had been in danger of this)! I'm so glad that they managed to "survive" this year, especially with the Cheryl court case, which really could have ruined everything. I'm very happy with what the single choices were, although at the time I suppose there were a couple of album tracks that I felt could have been singles. 'You Freak Me Out' was in line to be a single, but I'm glad that it wasn't in the end. It's a fun album track, but a bit cheap as a single. Bearing in mind that I was only 15 in 2003, I didn't really have much spending power. I only bought the CD1s for the singles in this year. I wasn't really much of a collector until I became an adult, so it became a mission of mine to try and get all their formats. The 'Jump' cassette was the most elusive item, and it took me many years to get myself a copy!! Overall I have great memories of Girls Aloud in 2003. One of the most notable things was their styling - what a mess they looked, most of the time! Yet at the time it seemed to work for them. I think it was good that they started off a bit "rough and ready", and that their image becoming more sophisticated was a gradual process. tl;dr ~ |

Yes I remember them back in the day, I loved their first single and was pleased that No Good Advice was brilliant and loved it then and now, and then bought the album instantly, but can't believe they were gonna get dropped though, I thought they did ok considering the low sales period and the album was pretty good, but I didn't buy the special edition version though, I weren't mad on Jump, but I still wanted the song to do well and thankfully it did. My fave album tracks apart from the singles were Some Kind Of Miracle, Mars Attack and Forever And A Night, an okay album but the follow up was better.
