Might be a bit touch and go whether this remains in the Top 40 for a third week? Currently midweek #38.

Let's not forget that One Direction hung around the Top 3 for a few weeks. Disastrous in every way.

Hmmm maybe they're not as safe with their success as everyone seems to think. They've only really had two big hits with Wings and Move (the winners single doesn't really count) and the rest have just performed alright. The US campaign hasn't really gone that well either, yes they've scored two Top 5 albums which is brilliant but they've both fallen sharply after that success.

I think it'll be touch and go on whether they'll get a fourth album.

I'm not worried, they've sold over 3million singles world wide and 1million albums, they're leaps and bounds ahead of the current western girl group market in terms of sales and they'll also be making their label a lot of money off the massive amount of merchandise they sell. Word Up! has done poorly, but they can easily distance themselves from it with it being a charity single, like they have with Cannonball. I'm looking forwards to the next single from Salute and them hopefully regaining the support they had around the Move era.

No point in reposting/rewording when someone has already done it for me. Completely agreed!

LOL Griff, are you REALLY comparing Little Mix to the biggest band in the world right now? laugh.gif (I'm not disagreeing that the 'Word Up!' campaign has been a disaster though tongue.gif)

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I've been looking back at the old threads and noticed this comment. I can see why you thought that at the time though. 'Salute' (album) had underperformed somewhat and the singles (bar 'Move') didn't do that well. Thankfully, Little Mix have been going from strength to strength since then.

I don't think it was an unfair assumption to be honest. Most pop artists, once they begin a decline, it continues in that direction. And while Salute was easily successful enough for a third album, if the 3rd album had had a similar level of decline, they possibly would have been dropped. Luckily they found Black Magic, because that changed everything for them.

As has been discussed on here many times, the Salute era was one large mess of missed opportunities and bad decisions. I'll always be bitter we never got NFLY as a single as I honestly believe it would've been a big hit, especially if it had been released in the summer

Looking over some posts pre Get Weird, just shows how things have turned around for them. Black Magic really did open them up to a whole new level of success.

Agreed. It was such a fantastic album done so dirty by the single releases. 'Little Me' is where it all went wrong imo. It's a decent track but not single worthy in slightest; if they were so set on a down-tempo release, they should've opted for 'Towers'. I suppose this was when they were still trying to appeal to the pre/early-teen market with the self-help anthems though. God I'm glad they're past that stage.

'Move' did very well given how off-trend it was at the time, although I still believe they should've preceded it with 'Salute' in July/August. I know it still performed decently following BGT, but it always screamed 'huge lead single' to me, and being the 4th single, it never got much radio support. Replacing 'Word Up' with 'Competition' and rounding off the era with NFLY would've made for an amazing campaign.

Not that I remember posting that but I'm happy to stand by it for the reasons Joe said! Obviously those style of charity singles have since fallen out of favour but 'Word Up' was a bit of a disaster for what was a crucial tipping point for them. As Joe said, a pop act is normally going to continue a decline once they've started it and they did see a decline of success with 'Salute', even though it was still impressive for a girl band and the change in style for them! It really was an uncertain time for them, especially with them being signed to Syco who drop their artists left, right and centre!

They still weren't really the household big names that they possibly looked set to be with some of the hype placed on them as the next big girl band. Yes, the two eras were quite successful but, at that stage, I think people would only be able to name 'Wings' and 'Move' at a push. And then, with the later news that they cancelled their US tour and scrapped their third album, things didn't look good!

Obviously 'Black Magic' and a really well-planned third era did save them though and make them into the household names I was doubting at the time of writing.

I will always stand by my belief that Don't Let Go and Black Magic are the two most significant songs they've ever done. Allow me to explain:

Don't Let Go: before this most people probably saw them as 'pretty good for a girlband' but perhaps not potential winners- then Don't Let Go happened. It was the first time they topped the vote and maybe the first time the public as a whole saw them as contenders

Black Magic: after all the issues with the Salute era and cancelled US tour, not to mentioning having to scrap the original LM3, if the lead single had flopped the brutal truth is that would've been game over. Then BM came along and absolutely smashed it, getting 3 weeks at Number 1 and hanging around in the charts for what seemed like forever. Without doubt it took the girls to a whole new level and opened them up to a new audience

Ditto! I'm still so upset NFLY was snubbed, especially as it is quite clear the girls wanted it as a single. Produced by MNEK and written by Camille Purcell, who at that point had just given The Saturdays their first number one, the radios would have swallowed it up!

But These Four Walls, Towers, About That Boy or like you said Competition would have worked better than both Little Me and Word Up! In fact I think one of the ballads would have worked wonderfully for a charity single, it would have been their "Stand By You" moment.

They have the least overall views in the top 20 most certified too so the fact they have 10 certified videos is a big achievement.
