How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 600 times if you really want to).

The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least half of all streaming sales (probably, we can't actually be sure on that), so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Good debuts for Miley & Katy. Shame about Cheryl missing the top 200 even though it was kind of obvious she would.

She did get decent support last time for Love Made Me Do It so be interesting to see if she gets added to any decent playlists.

I appreciate that this is probably aimed at UK rap in general but Skepta is probably the worst example you could possibly give for how big a name he is in the genre he's actually had very little chart success. He's had a total of one top 10 hit ever - only because it was a carbon copy follow-up to Wiley's massive #1 - and only one top 20 hit as lead artist. Only 2 of his last 11 singles have even gone top 40, half of them missed the top 100 entirely.

I wish Skepta was huge. "Wish You Were Here" is one of my favourite songs of the year and that did nothing. What Do You Mean? is pretty good too though, probably J Hus is driving its success more than he is though.

I don't care about Cheryl not doing well, the song is flat. Okay maybe Skepta was a bad example bit just UK Hip Hop / Urban in general doing well on the back of absolutely zero promotion and hardly any quality or creativity going into the songs being big and just managing to get Top 10/20 hits like it isn't a thing is frustrating to see
I hope it's a phase and passes.

A pretty solid start for Katy there, think this one could well be a big hit for her, definitely sounds much more like a hit than '365' did.

Hope 'Greaze Mode' should get a new peak in the top 20 this week! 'Bullet From A Gun' could make a belated top 40 entry too as I expect it'll hold up better than 'Redrum' (and it has a music video etc.)

Disappointed with how low down 'Love Me Not' and 'Gangsta' are from the Skepta album as they were the instant highlights for me.

It's particularly great to hear Sophie Ellis-Bextor's vocals again on the 'Murder on the Dancefloor' sample in Love Me Not.

I’m not disputing the quality of those singles — although quality doesn’t really matter with the chart anyway.

She became very uncool and easy to mock after her haircut (groan) and after Chained to the Rhythm ‘underperformed’. There has definitely been a narrative about whether or not she could ever succeed again.

It really does just depend on the right song (which I really think this one is) — funny how fickle the public can be.

Song quality is entirely subjective though.

I think Swish Swish is one of her best yet but obviously that wasn’t going to be one of her biggest ever hits (though it didn’t do too badly)

She’s still at the point in her career where with a song with wide appeal she can get a big hit anyhow, she just isn’t at the phase where anything she does will smash but she’s not Madonna/Britney yet.

I would agree that quality does matter to an extent - it's why I Don't Care hasn't been Shape of You levels of big despite the mega name power. People just don't like the song as much (though it's still doing well obviously). However, I don't think that means Katy hasn't released great songs. Bon Appétit is a VERY popular song, but only within certain circles, the general public weren't fussed. I'd argue Swish Swish was a hit though.

That is what blacksquare was saying no? x People were writing off Katy as if she could never get another hit but really she just needed to have the right song. I really liked 'Bon Appétit' but it was pretty obviously a terrible single choice and her other singles since then, until this one, were not what she needed to get back to major sucecss.

I think with Never Really Over it's a case of it being instantly catchy and likeable. It's pretty much one of her best reviewed tracks ever, even Pitchfork who never really give her good reviews said it was one of her best songs ever.

Its obvious Taylor is trying to have a uplifting track after a dark era (by her standards) with reputation, I would say its more along the lines of bubblegum pop than a "children's" song its hardly baby shark or Can we fix it? (Both great novelty songs)

I would probably prefer the Katy track if it was sung by Taylor it does sound like it could suit her better but NRO and ME! Are hardly similar songs. And hopefully Katy can continue to have decent success too

I have to agree, and I expect 'Call You Mine' will be the first properly big hit for The Chainsmokers since 'Something Just Like This' too. Top 20 at least.

Really impressive showing for Liam Gallagher, though I expect it'll probably drop off quite quickly after the first week. Looks like it'll do better than 'Wall Of Glass' anyway though.

2 new album tracks featuring J Hus debuting in the Spotify top 10 in as many weeks. I hope this song is better than the rather bland 'Shine Girl'. (Also hope this Avicii track will be better than the 2 singles, quite looking forward to hearing it as I do love 'A Sky Full Of Stars').

If the song was rush-released on a Saturday, it's kinda normal that it's not on playlists. for instance, don't think HH ever updates during the weekend

wasn't expecting Jonas Brothers album tracks to show up, so no surprises there.... but was expecting a bit higher for Avicii's album tracks... his label should have instructed Spotify to replace SOS with Heaven on HH like Lewis Capaldi's label did with Grace/SLY

Avicii hasn’t underperformed. A few album tracks top 200 is amazing for a dance act, not to mention Heaven instantly going top 20 despite no Hot Hits and being song number four on NMF, plus Chris Martin not being credited.

Disappointed that "Wild" isn't one of MoStack's top tracks, a #41 peak feels unjust. Hope "Stinking Rich" debuts higher than "Shine Girl" climbs too (they are in the reverse order over on Apple Music); "Shine Girl" is really bland - not even Stormzy helps save it.

I agree, 'Wild' is the only song from him that I've really liked so far (excluding 'Fashion Week'), his 2 top 40 hits as lead artist are both pretty mediocre so it's a shame that one ends up with a #41 peak. Not surprised at it not being too high up though considering it's right at the end of the album and it was always bound to be locked out of the chart anyway since the collabs with Dave/J Hus and Fredo both have some playlist push.

Old town road has had a similar lead for the last 2 weeks and still ended up at #2

It is really disappointing that 'Nightmare' seems to be falling off so quickly despite getting off to a similar start to 'Without Me', it stands out by a mile among 98% of the rest of the chart (sure it's not the most edgy / experimental etc. song ever but it's definitely different by current mainstream music standards). Yeah Nightmare is easily Halsey's best. Hot Hits really needs a shake up. The same songs have been at the bottom for weeks now - Charli, Halsey, Rita/Tiesto could all go up and Katy Perry being only 34th when she effortlessly made the top 20 on Spotify seems weird.

Nightmare will probably be track 10 on Hot Hits in 3 months time when all the hype has died. That seems to be how Hot Hits works.

I’m hoping as time passes, there will be rules put in place regarding how long a track can be on a influential playlist like Hot Hits.

I never said it was a new music playlist? It’s supposed to be a balance of new songs and current hits. But what is the point if the same songs dominate the top half and new music goes unheard at the bottom of the playlist.

Songs which have spent multiple weeks in the charts already, should be moved down to make way for new hits and at least attempt to keep the charts fresh.

You literally just contradicted yourself within one sentence. It's not meant to be a balance, it is a playlist of the biggest hits (save for payola-driven anomalies like Picture This), hence the name. No one is going to Hot Hits to find new music, it's something to put on in the background which has all the biggest current popular songs which everyone already knows. Spotify has no reason to care about how 'fresh' the charts are, they make the same amount of money no matter what people are listening to.

The thing that I feel is a shame about how HH works is that they have the opportunity to shape the commercial music scene and provide opportunities for hits/artists to break through, but they just won't do it.

Yes sure they get the same amount of revenue regardless of what they have on there and it makes no difference to them, but surely it could be more beneficial to the music industry as a whole for them not to be so restrictive in how they curate this playlist which holds so much power and influence?

'Your Song' is exactly the chart run comparison I'm thinking of so far. Entering at #13 and peaking at #7 a few weeks later, plus her career being on shaky territory before this comeback like Rita's was.

Stormzy actually dropping quite a bit today oops - I thought this one would have caught on more, I know it's not as chart friendly as 'Vossi Bop' but it's not like 'Blinded By Your Grace, Pt. 2' wasn't a big hit.

'Panini' only down 2 places, hopefully a good sign that it will stick around and wasn't just doing well for a day off curiosity streams.

'Señorita' looks like it is gonna be pretty huge then, did not expect it to climb this high so soon after the #6 debut. RIP Ed & Bieber getting 9 weeks at #1 after all.

I really want to like the song more than I do (as I really liked 'If I Can't Have You' and Camila is pretty good in general), I'm hoping it'll be a grower but just finding it ok so far.

Stormzy back up to #11 today.

I've not heard 'Lalala' yet but I'm pretty sure this is the same Y2K from the (very underrated) BJSC DNQ 'White Wine' from a few years ago which was a trap (as in the dance trap, not trap hip-hop) song so I presume this one is a little different from the usual US rap hits unless his sound has totally changed.

'Ransom' on the other hand is entirely generic and exactly what you'd expect. Still a tune tho. x
