Shallow to win, obviously.. top 5 is interesting to see though.

18. Out of Time // 6.00

First out, unsurprisingly, we have an instrumental that comes at one of the most pivotel moments of the film. As Aly desperately tries to seek Jackson as he performs to a sell-out audience, the instrumental intensifies. It's an exciting piece of music and the perfect soundscape to an intense moment of uncertainty. Bradley leading the guitar throughout is impressive, and despite its toe-tapping crescendos, it's clear why this hasn't garnered huge support here.

Posted by: SKOB 9th April 2019, 05:43 PM

Yea not surprised that this came out as last, pretty high score for the worst song, however biggrin.gif

Posted by: HausofTove 9th April 2019, 09:11 PM

17. Alibi // 6.30

We lose another solo Bradley song next, this time 'Alibi'. The song is a personal one for Jackson in the film, referring to his dying father and his history of running away from love and life. It features Bradley's raspy vocals on top of his electrifying guitar melodies. It's fairly nondescript and forgettable in the context of the film as a whole and didn't really leave much of a dent on listeners here.

Fully expecting all the Bradley songs to be at the bottom of this chart.

Oh yes - that is a good one!

16. Too Far Gone // 6.47

Well as predicted, it is another Bradley solo song out next. The song is a laid-back earthy song about travel, the open road and being set free. It's quintessential Jackson, but grows in meaning as the film progresses because it is in fact Ally that is the one that could set him free. Very short, under 1.5 minutes, the song seems like it could continue going but ironically, a song about going on and on, is cut brutally short... Does this have anything to do with Jackson's own desires to be free being cut short in harrowing fashion as the film draws to a close? Rewatching the film gives this song a ghostly, unnerving feel of what could have been.

Posted by: HausofTove 14th April 2019, 03:41 PM

15. Black Eyes // 6.54

Yet another Bradley exclusive out next. The song is the first bit of music we get and offers an explosive, electrifying start to the movie. Bradley is charismatic and energetic and shows off his guitar skills and control of the crowd. This is later coupled with his attempt of hiding himself from the fame, loud noises and manic energy of the stage. It's the perfect opening to the film as it shows Jackson off perfectly in all his elements.

Posted by: HausofTove 14th April 2019, 09:41 PM

14. La Vie En Rose // 7.5

The first Gaga song to be out is the first time we see her perform in the film - it managed to get a much greater score than the one that came before it, as we already enter 7s category. Starring at a drag night in a dingy club, Ally emerges from backstage, sings the sultry, alluring performance, catches the eye of Jackson and well... the rest is history. The performance is a fascinating, captivating one and really shows off the vocals that would soon ascend little, unknown Ally into super-stardom. Interestingly, Gaga herself performed 'La Vie en Rose' during her Cheek to Cheek Tour with Tony Bennett in 2015.

Posted by: HausofTove 16th April 2019, 10:02 AM

13. Hair Body Face // 7.62

Solo Gaga again, this time very much popstar Ally with a hint of The Fame Gaga. As she battles with the fame that is about to take over her and her desire to remain true to her musical routes, Ally still manages to deliver knockout pop numbers, no less through this. It's vintage Gaga with all the character and personality we have grown to love from her. Quirky and sassy, its the dream team of DJ White Shadow and Gaga letting go and enjoying themselves whole-heartedly.

Black Eyes and Maybe It's Time are the two main losses for me so far! Hearing Bradley sing for the first time at the very start of the film was a moment.

Posted by: SKOB 17th April 2019, 08:29 AM

LVER should've been a bit higher although it got decent rate

Maybe It's Time is still in the running! ohmy.gif

Posted by: PaulM1983 17th April 2019, 10:35 AM

I totally missed this rate, but Hair, Body, Face should be much higher. That chorus absolutely slaps. It's the best of the pop songs for me. Why Did You Do That should be out already.

Also, I hope Diggin' My Grave does well. It feels so underrated to me. It's in my top 5.

Oh good. I completely misread laugh.gif

I agree with Paul, would've liked to see Why Did You Do That out before Hair Body Face.

12. Before I Cry // 7.67

Next up, it's the only song on the soundtrack to not actually feature in the film! It may have been a song recorded for the film whose scene got cut in editing... but i'm not sure why. Before I Cry is a heartbreaking, stunning ballad about the power of love and loss. It may have lost a few points here because of it's omission from the film, but really it deserved better!

Posted by: SKOB 19th April 2019, 06:28 AM

BIC is very good!!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 19th April 2019, 11:41 AM

Hair Body Face and Before I Cry went FAR too soon!!

Heal Me should’ve been the lowest rated Gaga solo in my opinion (unpopular opinion).

Posted by: HausofTove 20th April 2019, 10:54 AM

11. Why Did You Do That? // 7.68

Just missing out on the top 10 here, it's Ally's SNL performance. In the film it causes tension between the lovers as Jackson laments her for selling out and losing the identity that made her so special. It represents Ally's rise to stardom but alongside this it contrastingly is one of the main causes for Jackson's return to drinking and his disbelief at the transformation his lover has taken. A controversial song, both in the film and here, as it seems to be a very much love it or hate it number.

Posted by: HausofTove 21st April 2019, 04:35 PM

10. Diggin' My Grave // 7.77

The first song in the top 10 is also strangely the first song that is a Bradley and Gaga duet. The full song isn't included in the film, but here on the soundtrack both artists let roar. The song is backed by a plucky instrumental that takes you straight to the outbacks of America. It's a song about the dangers of love and loss, as each lie, each tear, each word said is another step closer to death. A powerful song, sung with raw grit, representing the harshness of the film and the brutality of its events.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 21st April 2019, 04:57 PM

Surprised to see Hair Body Face being the lowest of the Aly pop songs! ohmy.gif BuzzJack hates a triple threat~

(Lol I know 7.62 is a decent score, but hmm x It’s Top 10 on the album for me)

EXCUSE ME but Why Did You Do That? not being top 5 is a TRAVESTY.

Posted by: HausofTove 27th April 2019, 08:35 PM

09. Music to My Eyes // 7.83

A Gaga and Bradley duet again in the top 10, and it's a true duet in traditional terms. Both lovers sing of their adoration for each other comparing music to th ebeauty that each possesses. It's a beautiful ballad full of lovely images and ideas of the power of music and love as one.

Posted by: SKOB 28th April 2019, 08:49 AM

MTME is pretty boring imo

08. Maybe It's Time // 7.87

The final Bradley solo song crashes out here, leaving a top 7 of all Gaga and duet songs. Maybe It's Time became Bradley's first ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and is one of the defining songs from the film - it is about change and dealing with one's internal changing mindset. It has had critical and commercial success, helped by the fact that it is performed several times in the film, and is just a damn good, triumph. It's a well deserved highest entry for Bradley here, especially in a forum dominated by Gaga stans!

Why Did You Do That missing top 10 is a TRAVESTY! sad.gif

'Maybe It's Time' slaying gah

07. Heal Me // 8.1

The first track to get an average above 8 is the delectable Heal Me! A track in similar vein to The Cure, is a song about the healing nature of love. In this, Gaga is the patient, wanting to be cured, to be listened to, to be appreciated and to be loved. It's a beautifully lyrical track about the power that a soul can have on another and represented one of Ally's solo tracks as she ascended up the pop stardom rankings.

Posted by: SKOB 3rd May 2019, 07:14 PM

The Cure 2.0 tbh, only weaker

Posted by: HausofTove 4th May 2019, 09:31 AM

06. I Don't Know What Love Is // 8.32

Just missing out on the top 5 is the stunning, glorious, huge duet ballad. It comes at a moment in the film when the love between Jackson and Ally is pure, unaffected and whole. As the two marry each other, and these airy vocals flow, it's a breathtaking moment of beauty. The song is about the confusion and the mystical nature of love and its power. A true statement of vulnerability and one of the real highlights of the film and soundtrack.

Posted by: SKOB 4th May 2019, 12:04 PM

A song I don't really revisit on soundtrack that much but it's perfect in the movie!

Posted by: Jordan Lee 4th May 2019, 12:30 PM

Heal Me should’ve been the first Gaga solo to go.

I Dont Know What Love Is though wub.gif aside from Shallow it’s the best duet in the film and I very often replay.

Posted by: HausofTove 9th May 2019, 11:49 AM

05. Look What I Found // 8.57

First song in the all important top 5 is 'Look What I Found'. One of the few songs to get a video, the song is a creation from Ally as she discusses her battle to rise to the top. Within her battle, she finds someone to love her and this completes her. It's an upbeat song, plucky and vibrant especially compared to what remains to be found in this countdown...

Posted by: UltraME! 9th May 2019, 11:51 AM

I'm shocked but rly glad IDKWLI is so high up, such a gorgeous song and one of the highlights of the soundtrack for me <3

Hair Body Face is ridiculously low wtf :/

Posted by: SKOB 9th May 2019, 01:42 PM

LWIF has that groove!!

Posted by: Riser 10th May 2019, 03:45 AM

Look What I Found was probably the most instant for me, very glad it's top 5.

Posted by: HausofTove 12th May 2019, 01:23 PM

04. Is That Alright? // 8.69

Next up we have the song that plays over the film's closing credits. Ally's ode to Jackson, it is painfully beautiful, heartfelt and emotional. The song tells of Ally's undying love for Jackson, her vocals soar, subdue and totally encapsulate the passion and adoration she has for him. It is a tender moment with grit and raw emotion. The question that the song repeats makes it yet more heart-breaking - her desire to be with the man she loves is questioned throughout the film and its challenges and pitfalls all climax in this one, beautiful piece of music. Absolutely heart-breakingly beautiful.

Posted by: HausofTove 12th May 2019, 01:24 PM

For me, this is the best thing to come from this entire era. It is cementing itself as one of my favourite moments of her career as a whole and it is just the perfect representation of love. #4 placing and a score of 8.69 is incredible, but for this, in my opinion, it is far, far too low. </3

Posted by: Jay ☆ 12th May 2019, 01:31 PM

Heal Me getting an average score of just over 8 heart.gif deserved x

Is That Alright? - a beauty wub.gif

03. I'll Never Love Again // 9.2

Racking up a very impressive average, but not quite managing to clinch the top 2, it's the closing number in the song. Accompanied by flashbacks to the loving moments between Ally and Jackson, the song is a soaring ballad of infinite beauty.

When Gaga was getting ready to film this scene, she received the news that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her last moments of Stage IV cancer. She left the stage but arrived ten minutes after her friend died. Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, so she returned to the set and sang "I'll Never Love Again". Gaga has said that "Sonja gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to the set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an hour." Not only a poingnant moment of the film but also for Gaga herself, her career and her life.

Posted by: Riser 16th May 2019, 02:25 AM

The top 3 are nearly inseparable for me, there's no way I could pick a firm fave between them. I'm very curious to see how close their scores will be to one another.

Doesn't feel right for INLA to miss the top 2, but that said it wouldn't feel right for the other two either!

Posted by: HausofTove 16th May 2019, 06:28 AM

I can reveal there is only 0.11 separating the top 2!

Posted by: SKOB 16th May 2019, 08:59 PM

Ooh interesting!

Posted by: HausofTove 23rd May 2019, 08:06 PM

02. Always Remember Us This Way // 10.00

Offering stiff competition to the top spot, in second place we have the soundtrack's second single. It managed a perfect 10! The song became an instant favourite for fans and the public, amassing strong sales globally and an enduring streaming hit. It's a mournful, sorrowful song about how love ages yet memories remain. The lovers are stuck in a moment of pure bliss and it is this that powers them through future hardships. A magical moment of the film, as Ally gradually rises to stardom, it is this song that represents her talent and undying love. A true beauty of the film and soundtrack and also one of her greatest ballads to date. But it hasn't quite done enough to nab the top spot...

Posted by: HausofTove 23rd May 2019, 08:13 PM

01. Shallow // 10.11

And taking the gold medal, it's rightfully the biggest song from the film, and more fittingly a Ally/Jackson duet. The song is heard three times throughout the film, most prominently during a sequence when Jackson invites Ally to perform it onstage with him and from that moment on, her true talent and worth is realised for the world. It's the song that kickstarts her career and defines her life with Jackson. It's a song about questioning whether you are content with who you are, and it dramatically puts all of this into a huge, crashing realisation of self-worth and belief.

The song has gone on to become a major success for Gaga: It has topped the UK and US charts, one of the most awarded songs in history, including the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Song, it garnered four Grammy Award nominations, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year while winning for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media and has ultimately become one of the defining songs of the decade. A huge, monster smash and rightfully so. It is powerful, emotive and special. A very, very worthy #1.

Posted by: Jay ☆ 23rd May 2019, 09:51 PM

Shallow wub.gif A very worthy winner indeed! Such a deserved success for her (and Bradley x) in terms of the charts & awards. Definitely my favourite song on the album.

Thanks for hosting this Bal, have enjoyed reading your commentaries heart.gif!!

Surprised Shallow won on here tbh.

But a worthy winner. That last moment of the song and THAT note is one of the best things to come from 2018 in music and film.

Enjoyed this rate tongue.gif

SHALLOW!

Her biggest hit since BR tbh

Posted by: davidas 24th May 2019, 11:35 AM
