Teasers have begun.
As much as I hope it's a new album, Olly posts stuff like this all the time so I'm not going to get my hopes up too much 😅
Well Dreamland was one of Y&Y's best songs imo, so another Pet Shop boys collab or production would be good.
It seems that they are teasing some lyrics.
I really hope *anything* isn't too far away
It doesn't feel that long since the last album, although I guess it's less time than we were waiting between album 1 - 2.
I'm excited for their comeback, love 'em so!
Coming soon.
Finally!!
Wonder if they’ll wait until #newyears!
They have covered Pet Shop Boys' 1987 single "It's A Sin", which will be part of the TV series of the same title (fka Boys) out Friday.
Ah that's brilliant to hear!
I presume it probably won't be part of the album, but any new music from them is welcomed
(Btw where have you heard this info?)
Oh wow, the original is such a huge favourite of mine.
Looking forward to hearing this - great tie in as well!
oh thats an exciting notion... i'd love PSB to do more with Y&Y.
I've been giving the original quite a few plays recently following its use in the trailer for the TV series, intrigued to hear Y&Y's version!
I imagine they'll do this justice looking forward to hearing it.
Wow will be interesting to hear!
Gah this is a stripped back piano version
Disappointed we didn't get an absolute banger, but it is a nice cover all the same. I probably won't return to it though.
I was certainly hoping for some more instruments than just a piano.
What a HUGE disappointment. This version could have been a real moment with King-styled production and some extra bells and whistles, camped up.
Not what I wanted at all.
I really like this, it is kinda strange to come back after all this time with a cover though ...
^ Pretty sure it's just to promote the TV series 'It's a Sin' which Olly stars in.
I kinda like how simple it is...
I prefer the original, I like to this how this version will do in the charts.
I was expecting a full on dancier cover.... but given the programme that its for and the topic I can see why the stripped back version was done.
I think its good though; Olly's voice is great. I can see this getting a big bump later tonight when the show airs etc.
I love their version of It's A Sin. The Pet Shop Boys version is, of course, brilliant but I'm glad they've decided to do it very differently.
I'm starting to appreciate this now I've gotten over it not being what I initially wanted/expected.
Really looking forward to seeing the first episode of the show this evening.
I quite like this on first listen. Tbh the PSB original does everything this track could ever do in terms of OTT pop so I'd rather have this stripped back version than just a worse upbeat version of the original.
agree, theres no way they were ever gonna beat the original with an uptempo version
Yeah I'm appreciating it a lot more now, I suppose an upbeat cover by them wouldn't be that dissimilar from the original anyway
I'm liking this even more now I've watched the show, it makes a lot more sense
is this in the show? cos I don't recall hearing it while watching the show
No I don't think it was, as blacksquare says it's more of a companion piece I think
I've just realised how much I dislike his voice.
They only played a short segment of the original on the show as well!
An extremely reliable insider from Twitter said that they're releasing "Traps" this Friday. The tweet is now deleted so I don't know if was a mistake or something but it seems weird that they would come back with a re-release of an 8-year-old song. The only thing I can think of is that they've either totally reworked the original or it's just a brand new song with the same title?
makes no sense, Traps was even released on a different label
'traps' ??? LOL
I doubt Olly even remembers 'traps'.
That's strange - it would be weird for something to come out this week without an announcement yet!
IIRC, there wasn't any proper announcement of the release of "It's A Sin", so they could follow the same pattern if it's indeed "Traps". Either way, Olly will be co-hosting with Annie Mac tomorrow from 7pm on BBC Radio 1.
"It's A Sin" wasn't a lead single for an album though, I think that makes me lean towards it being a re-release of Traps rather than a new song tbh
Montage video from the series is out today:
I knew that would happen sooner or later!
I’m sure that already happened in the second era
Not surprised but very disappointed :/
'Communion was a dream come true and playing the music across the world for you was a privilege. I will miss seeing your joyful faces in the crowd.'
Well, this says a lot...
Sounds like a new song right at the end of this
New Single - Starstruck out 08/04/21
Very interesting! Looking forward to it
He will be performing on Graham Norton on 9th April
A teaser of "Starstruck" is out on TikTok.
https://www.tiktok.com/@ollyalexander/video/6945006442894167302
The new song sounds a bit Olly Murs from that clip!
I'm liking that chorus A LOT!
Just watching Olly on Jools, and interestingly he still refers to Y&Y as "we" and "our"
Anyway, he's said the upcoming music is French-house inspired, and influences were Justice and Pet Shop Boys!
That's whet my appetite somewhat!
This is REALLY good, can see it being a hit in the UK at least.
It kind of sounds like the love child of Meteorite and Shine with some funky french house vibes sprinkled in here and there, especially in the verses.
BOP
Number 1 already on i-tunes
Simple but GREAT He always delivers.
Yeah very instant for me, hope it does well!
I love it already! Hope it’s a massive hit!
I like it, but it's just so Olly Murs.
I think I already prefer this to anything from the last album, what a GIGANTIC BOP
insta A-listed by R1!!
Yes! Get in!
Video:
That video
Great video and the song is soooo good! My favourite thing from Y&Y in ages
Had no idea Y&Y was a solo thing until now
It's a fine pop tune, lacks the flavour of their older hits though
This is probably one of my least fave Y&Y singles
You can certainly tell what influence the other two members had... (I do really like this anyway though)
Debuts at #64 this week
Performing on Graham Norton tonight!
I can't believe the other 2 only contributed to 2 songs on their last album (and ironically the best 2 songs!!)
Rendezvous and Howl
literally my 2 faves, alongside 'Lucky Escape'.
I shazammed Starstruck after hearing it in a taxi earlier today (I think it was on Heart)
Really good song
I hate how little Starstruck does for me too
Its been added to HH on Spotify, so hopefully should starting impacting a bit more on there
charity shop sue has done a tiktok on him and he referenced her on the one show... which is nice. I hope charity shop sue actually gets a network show.
Thought it would be best to move Y&Y to Pop as it seems to be clear what sort of direction Olly is heading in now!
Great to see this finally top 40 this week
New music soon. Album almost finished.
Remix of It's A Sin with Elton John is out now following their BRITs performance
That was an insane performance, goosebumps throughout!
Olly's such a star. What an incredible performance.
Normally I think olly on tv is very poor but that was soo good
It was a highly enjoyable performance at the Brits.
I hope the Elton John version of IAS gets included on the album along with the solo version
I would also welcome both to be included.
love that elton is reintroducing himself a dance pop star
loved the 'its a sin' performance. The U at the end. So touching.
I'd love for it to go top 40, I think I am just dreaming though
A Kylie Minogue remix of Starstruck is apparently out next week!
Nice boost for Kylie even though she won't be credited on charts.
CD single now out!
"Crave" is the title of the next single, which has been announced on BBC Radio 1 tonight.
i hope its better than 'starstruck'... everything about 'starstruck' was great, except the song itself
5pm usually means an Apple Music 1 premiere (or none at all and it just gets released)
The album cover is a choice.
Just your average album artwork
oh my that cover
why is it out on Jan 7? that suggests lack of hope from the label...
Oh at this, not what I expected.
just heard the new single and it's no good, no wonder they release the album in Jan, no one's gonna care
Love love love the new single!
The new single isn't bad but it doesn't sound like a hit at all
The most interesting thing about this album is going to be the cover isn't it?
its a fab song tho
it’s okay, nothing ground breaking though and can’t see it troubling top 40
Crave is sounding very clunky on the chorus. It doesn’t really fit?
Crave is very different to Starstruck. More of a grower!
Crave sounds like Years & Years best release so far in the new album
likely to miss the top 100! would probably have missed. top 200!
This is really clunky, not surprised it’s flopping
‘Sweet Talker’ with Galantis is out on Nov 24th!
I've lost all interest at this point.
yikes at the album cover
there’s no way this won’t get delayed
January release after the first single came out in April? Does not look good
January release after the first single came out in April? Does not look good
I think if 'Crave' is anything to go by, his ability to get radio support etc has evaporated.
Hmmm I’m not 100% sure on Sweat Talker… the last minute is great, the verses not so much
Although a bit more instant than Crave
It's a bit better than the last two, but it's still not quite "it". It never really goes anywhere beyond the first minute and repeats itself interminably for the second half.
Some of the vocals on this have been edited so heavily they don't even sound like him!
I'm very much thinking at this point that he's lost it.
Heard this on radio early. A bit shit isnt it
Oh dear Olly.
TRASH. What the heck was that
#11 on iTunes and #64 on Apple Music
Unpopular opinion but really enjoying Sweet Talker? Starstruck is still the best from the era for me but this is definitely a marked improvement on Crave. The Galantis production is fantastic.
For me they were one of the most exciting acts to emerge when they brought out their debut album, I lost interest a bit by album 2 and now have totally lost interest (so has most of the GP by the looks of things).
Tracklisting is coming today
1. Consequences
2. Starstruck
3. Night Call
4. Intimacy
5. Crave
6. Sweet Talker (with Galantis)
7. Sooner or Later
8. 20 Minutes
9. See You Again
10. Make It Out Alive
11. Strange and Unusual
Deluxe Edition:
15. A Second to Midnight (with Kylie Minogue)
16. Starstruck (Kylie Minogue remix)
I don't know what happened with tracks 12-14, but that's how it's listed everywhere
i’m really shocked it’s not being pushed back
Why would it? Y&Y are doing the New Year celebrations concert which is huge promotion, there’s no better time than then to release.
True but I don’t think there would be any better time to release it other than the quietest month for releases and following a major promo slot.
it feels like its been secretly pushed back since April 2021... it feels like it was planned to come out alongside 'It's A Sin' but after the lackluster performance of the first single, it's been secretly put on hold.
Jan 2022 is a poor album release time so justifies any poor sales.
the video for sweet talker is horrible
Now there's a 'New Year's Edition' coming out the same day that has past hits tagged on the end:
- King
- Shine
- If Your Over Me
- Desire
- Sanctify
- Play
- It's a Sin
The label really are desperate for this to do something.
Jesus Christ that’s outrageous!
I like the new track. In fact, each of the songs off this album have been quite different. I deffo want the album but had a problem preordering it from Amazon as it won’t deliver to any location such as the Amazon lockers. Not sure why so will have to buy it from HMV instead.
I've not listened to the album in full yet but Sweet Talker is by miles the best single so far.
'Sweet Talker' is growing on me oops.
I really like Sweet Talker! The initial negative reaction to it here surprised me!
Yeah I'm really loving Sweet Talker now! A bit basic, but still a bop!
Not to make this thread too repetitive but I've also massively switched on this too a bop and I hope it can put this era back on track a bit!
Mikey is performing with Olly on the NYE show for (I believe) the first time since he left Years & Years as a ‘proper’ member.
He better do shine
I mean he is singing bloody sunlight, so I hope so!
I'm actually really enjoying this so far!
You actually forget how big Years and Years are?
Well I enjoyed watching his performance. It was good promotion and nice to see Kylie and PSB Join him!
so many hits is a slight exageration... i'd say they had 3 hits - King, Shine & Play... If you're over me and Eyes Shut are probably favourable with the GP but forgotten.
seems like he will most likely be up against weeknd second week sales, I'm still expecting him to debut with around 10,000 - 15,000 with a top 3 debut.
He's actually against the third week sales! The third week sales of 'After Hours' was 7.8k, and I certainly imagine this one won't be as big - so I reckon he still has a decent shot at the #1.
I'd agree with 'If You're Over Me', I still hear it now and again too!
For what it's worth, the top 10 most currently popular Y&Y songs on Spotify are:
1. Sweet Talker (with Galantis)
2. King
3. Starstruck
4. Breathe (this became a hit on TikTok in 2020)
5. Desire - Gryffin Remix
6. A Second to Midnight (with Kylie Minogue)
7. Crave
8. If You're Over Me
9. Shine
10. Desire
The album track Muscle sounds like a bop!
Sweet Talker could be a moderate hit and at the least achieve Top 40 status.
'If You're Over Me' is still being played regularly on Heart (unfortunately).
Navos Remix for Sweet Talker is coming on Friday;
Sweet Talker is great. It has a progressive house vibe like Galantis' early songs which is great.
Sweet Talker is #1 on Today Hits on Apple, seems to be getting a big push there this week, hopefully HHUK playlist it soon, i can see this going top 20.
It’s a good job the album got postponed otherwise he’d be up against the Weeknd who would destroy him in the battle for #1 album
There’s a new interview out with Olly talking about the band’s split. One of the main divisions was that Olly wanted to perform on The X Factor, but the other two deemed it ‘too pop’.
They were alright with All Round to Mrs Brown’s though! But I suppose they did clearly have less creative control for their second album.
yet they still never managed x factor
their first album is probably their poppiest? well certainly more commercial sounding
'Sooner Or Later' is out tomorrow ahead of the album next week. It's quite low down on NMF Australia, so it doesn't appear to be the third single.
isn't 'sweet talker' the third single
i really like sooner or later tbh
'Sooner Or Later' is the best thing he's put out this era!
Agreed, easily the best so far!
I know it’s totally the norm but I’m just shocked that Y&Y would have enough stans to warrant so many formats? Surely these are going to be £4.99 ‘Amazon Specials’ soon
Standard CD
Standard CD (HMV Exclusive Sleeve)

Plus there are various bundles with signed posters and the ‘New Years Edition’ for iTunes and streaming.
Really loving every song from this so far, think it will be the best album yet
Sooner or later is really good. Looking forward to the album!
I think they should have released the album today,
Out now!
I still can’t believe there’s 6 old hits (+ Its a Sin) tagged onto the end, there’s not even a version of the album on Spotify without them.
truly mabel teas with the tagging
At least Mabel isn’t adding songs from 8 years ago onto hers!
(That being said, I am looking forward to hearing the album)
Underwhelming on first listen, esp with the heavy rebranding.
Tacking on old hits to up the streams is just embarrassing, not to mention kinda cancels out the rebranding.
the adding of old hits is very odd... i might have understood more if he'd re-recorded the songs... but he hasn't?
I'm also curious why he said there were no slower songs on the record when theres a few... did he change the album?
This is basically just average pop music. Not bad or anything for the most part, just not particularly exciting. Plus I do find listening to his/their albums the songs tend to get very repetitive.
On first listen it’s giving me all the 2-176-out teas.
'Muscle' is an absolute bop though, I'll keep that one at least.
he needs to bring back the communion sound
its really weird but i thought they were gonna be more indie-pop when they started, the 2nd album was sorta all over the place and now he's come back as a pop star. I think the twinkly, first album vibe is very missed.
There are hints of a good album here... and it's in no means bad... just when the songs are on, their catchy but I haven't walked away obsessed with a particular track.
not him moving his album date to avoid releases and meat loaf will probably beat him to #1
This is so average and sounds like an album of demos/leftovers it's not bad but like Aly says, it's just not exciting or unique like the first two albums largely were.
In particular, 'Strange and Unusual' felt like it was never going to end but it's only just over 3 minutes
I don't care how this post comes across or how OTT it sounds but, I wasn't really running to check the album out given nothing this era has really grabbed me. Having seen that songs from the DEBUT are tagged to the end has low-key enraged me though? When did the artform of an album become this watered down that old hits can be tacked onto the end to increase the relevance or chart performance of it. It's so depressing and I really hope the OCC do something about it. I won't be listening to the album because of the sour taste this has left in my mouth :') A complete disregard of integrity and an artistic vision for the music. Again, I know this sounds so OTT and I don't know why I am affected by it but... if the music quality was strong enough - let it do the talking rather than relying on past glories
Nah, I agree. It's embarrassing and shallow. He's giving a lot of sob story interviews about being 'abandoned' by the others right now too and it is not playing well for me tbh.
Remember that it’s more than likely the label that thought up the tactic as a means of trying to ensure some chart longevity, so in turn that could lead to more people checking out the album.
In a chart that is already so messed up in numerous respects, I almost can’t blame them for playing the system!
I blame Mabel personally, she has really unleashed a demon here.
I dunno what y'all are on about, it's a nice little album and quite a few songs jumped out at me on first listen. 'Immaculate' is... well, just that! Also liking '20 Minutes' and 'Muscle'. Sure, there's a couple of fillers but overall it's really not that bad an album!
(I completely agree about tacking the old hits on the end though, completely unnecessary and reeks of desperation by the label but I'm judging the music here rather than label tactics).
I bought the album today. I like what I’ve heard so far. Some good pop songs, nothing really ground breaking though.
i see this debuting at #3, I think Meat Loaf will be top two.
Yeah so this isn't anywhere near Communion/Palo Santo but there's still some good stuff here - Sooner Or Later and Night Call are both bops (one of them should've been released instead of Crave tbh) and 20 Minutes is cute.
I thought it was an ok album although from the new tracks I only saved Sooner Or Later, Muscle and Strange And Unusual to my playlist. A lot of it did wash over me unfortunately.
Agree, it's a very bland album overall. And not very many single-worthy highlights.
I don’t understand all the negativity about this album. It’s a pretty good album. Takes a few listens but I like it :-)
yeah i'd say its a nice enough album...
Sweet Talker has just hit with me. What a TUNE
I do agree it is really desperate and tacky, but in all honestly it didn't bother me that much in terms of the listening experience. I just stopped listening at track 16 knowing the rest isn't actually part of the album.
Olly Murs did, but it was billed from the start as half new album/half greatest hits.
exactly, Olly Murs was a dual new album/greatest hits
he didn't release a new album and then a second version with the greatest hits added
Yeah I think this feels a bit different and more cynical than the Olly Murs album, if this was being marketed as a mix of old hits and new material that would be one thing but it's not as far as I'm aware, it really just comes across as a zero effort move to have it leech off the streams of the older hits to stay in the chart longer. I can't blame the label for taking advantage of the system this way but this really feels like something the OCC should have a look at (I don't have too much of a problem with double counting streams for a studio album and a greatest hits but having the same streams count towards two different studio albums by the same artist is harder to defend).
This is of course assuming that the streams of those songs are actually counting towards the album, which tbf I'm not sure if we know?
I'm not a huge fan of the Mabel / Jax Jones strategy of endlessly adding new songs either but again it doesn't feel quite as slimy as this Y&Y move, at least the added songs there are current material so part of the same 'era' even if not necessarily intended for the album per se.
^ I thought the rule was that the streams wouldn’t be double counted but they’ll be counted to whatever the biggest selling Y&Y album of the week is each week. So as long as Night Call is the biggest selling Y&Y album all streaming points for King, Shine and so on will be diverted to Night Call.
I find it hard to blame anyone for playing the game well and using tricks within the rules that help the chart position. As others have said you can still enjoy the new part of the album and stop there. Clearly it’s not how things should be though.
That’s how it works in the US. I’m fairly certain in the UK the streams of a song count to every album that they appear on.
That's (at least supposed to be) the rule when it comes to compilations but I don't think it applies to studio albums. Might be wrong though, it's not exactly a common scenario for songs to be featured on two separate studio albums.
Either way, it's leeching away streams from completely different eras.
I'm so happy for Olly, I bought the signed album earlier in the week to support!
they've now released a deluxe version on Apple Music without previous hits
SIRUP remix of Starstruck has been released today;
What do we think will be the next single ?
a deluxe version, I don't think he's got much hope of a single following album release tbh
Courtesy of Jade's personal chart I've checked out 'Reflection' and that is by far and away much better than all of the singles were so hooray for there at least being one song from this era that I can get behind. The title track is pretty good too.
another deluxe version
He’s on Graham Norton next Friday though not sure if he’s performing or not. I’d imagine he would perform the current single as it’s still rising on the chart.
Oh cool, is that on his album too?
Not yet!
Hot Since 82 Remix for Sweet Talker dropped today;
BANGER
So now this Estelle cover exists ;
Night Call has performed above expectations and should achieve Gold certification.
I think there was a rule change that has stopped the 'greatest hits' tagged on at the end from counting towards this album's weekly sales - purely speculating but Jay noted this and Mabel's 'High Expectations' both abruptly dropped out of the chart in the same week (with the latter having similarly been leeching a lot of its streams from songs off the 'Ivy To Roses' mixtape). So that'll significantly slow any progress this album was making towards a respectable total. Entirely fairly, it was always a slimy tactic.
^and consequently it's no longer top 100, don't think it's gonna progress much than the 60K it reached recently...
