Teasers have begun.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Aug 18 2020, 07:40 PM

As much as I hope it's a new album, Olly posts stuff like this all the time so I'm not going to get my hopes up too much 😅

Posted by: Flopiday Aug 18 2020, 07:48 PM

Well Dreamland was one of Y&Y's best songs imo, so another Pet Shop boys collab or production would be good.

Posted by: Juan Carlos Sep 2 2020, 03:46 AM

It seems that they are teasing some lyrics.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Sep 3 2020, 05:51 PM

I really hope *anything* isn't too far away laugh.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Sep 3 2020, 10:57 PM

It doesn't feel that long since the last album, although I guess it's less time than we were waiting between album 1 - 2.

I'm excited for their comeback, love 'em so!

Coming soon.

Wonder if they’ll wait until #newyears!

They have covered Pet Shop Boys' 1987 single "It's A Sin", which will be part of the TV series of the same title (fka Boys) out Friday.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 19 2021, 09:01 PM

Ah that's brilliant to hear!

I presume it probably won't be part of the album, but any new music from them is welcomed

(Btw where have you heard this info?)

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 19 2021, 11:00 PM

Oh wow, the original is such a huge favourite of mine. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Jester Jan 20 2021, 07:22 AM

Looking forward to hearing this - great tie in as well!

Posted by: dannjohn Jan 20 2021, 11:41 AM

oh thats an exciting notion... i'd love PSB to do more with Y&Y.

Posted by: Liam.k. Jan 20 2021, 11:44 AM

I've been giving the original quite a few plays recently following its use in the trailer for the TV series, intrigued to hear Y&Y's version!

Posted by: Simon. Jan 20 2021, 06:56 PM

I imagine they'll do this justice wub.gif looking forward to hearing it.

Posted by: steve201 Jan 21 2021, 08:16 PM

Wow will be interesting to hear!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 21 2021, 08:42 PM

Gah this is a stripped back piano version sad.gif

Posted by: Liam.k. Jan 22 2021, 01:12 AM

Disappointed we didn't get an absolute banger, but it is a nice cover all the same. I probably won't return to it though.

Posted by: awardinary Jan 22 2021, 01:46 AM

I was certainly hoping for some more instruments than just a piano. dry.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 22 2021, 01:49 AM

What a HUGE disappointment. This version could have been a real moment with King-styled production and some extra bells and whistles, camped up.

Not what I wanted at all.

Posted by: Tombo Jan 22 2021, 08:11 AM

I really like this, it is kinda strange to come back after all this time with a cover though ...

Posted by: Liam.k. Jan 22 2021, 08:23 AM

^ Pretty sure it's just to promote the TV series 'It's a Sin' which Olly stars in.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 22 2021, 09:38 AM

I kinda like how simple it is...

Posted by: Mart!n Jan 22 2021, 10:37 AM

I prefer the original, I like to this how this version will do in the charts.

It's not a 'proper single' so probably won't chart at all I'd imagine.

Posted by: ElectroBoy Jan 22 2021, 10:51 AM

I was expecting a full on dancier cover.... but given the programme that its for and the topic I can see why the stripped back version was done.

I think its good though; Olly's voice is great. I can see this getting a big bump later tonight when the show airs etc.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jan 22 2021, 11:31 AM

I love their version of It's A Sin. The Pet Shop Boys version is, of course, brilliant but I'm glad they've decided to do it very differently.

Oh ok, that makes sense laugh.gif

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 22 2021, 12:16 PM

I'm starting to appreciate this now I've gotten over it not being what I initially wanted/expected.

Really looking forward to seeing the first episode of the show this evening.

Posted by: dandy* Jan 22 2021, 02:07 PM

I quite like this on first listen. Tbh the PSB original does everything this track could ever do in terms of OTT pop so I'd rather have this stripped back version than just a worse upbeat version of the original.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 22 2021, 02:14 PM

agree, theres no way they were ever gonna beat the original with an uptempo version

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 22 2021, 02:19 PM

Yeah I'm appreciating it a lot more now, I suppose an upbeat cover by them wouldn't be that dissimilar from the original anyway

Posted by: dandy* Jan 30 2021, 12:20 PM

I'm liking this even more now I've watched the show, it makes a lot more sense sad.gif

I listened to this after watching the show and it makes complete sense — a sombre companion piece.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 30 2021, 12:53 PM

is this in the show? cos I don't recall hearing it while watching the show

Posted by: dandy* Jan 30 2021, 12:58 PM

No I don't think it was, as blacksquare says it's more of a companion piece I think

Posted by: Colm Feb 3 2021, 08:23 PM

I've just realised how much I dislike his voice.

Posted by: steve201 Feb 7 2021, 10:25 PM

They only played a short segment of the original on the show as well!

Posted by: valhalla140 Feb 10 2021, 01:41 AM

An extremely reliable insider from Twitter said that they're releasing "Traps" this Friday. The tweet is now deleted so I don't know if was a mistake or something but it seems weird that they would come back with a re-release of an 8-year-old song. The only thing I can think of is that they've either totally reworked the original or it's just a brand new song with the same title?

Posted by: Bjork Feb 10 2021, 07:45 AM

makes no sense, Traps was even released on a different label

Posted by: dannjohn Feb 10 2021, 10:31 AM

'traps' ??? LOL

I doubt Olly even remembers 'traps'.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Feb 10 2021, 10:39 AM

That's strange - it would be weird for something to come out this week without an announcement yet!

Posted by: Juan Carlos Feb 10 2021, 03:06 PM

IIRC, there wasn't any proper announcement of the release of "It's A Sin", so they could follow the same pattern if it's indeed "Traps". Either way, Olly will be co-hosting with Annie Mac tomorrow from 7pm on BBC Radio 1.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Feb 10 2021, 04:05 PM

"It's A Sin" wasn't a lead single for an album though, I think that makes me lean towards it being a re-release of Traps rather than a new song tbh

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Feb 19 2021, 11:17 AM

Montage video from the series is out today:

I agree with this. I always felt that Palo Santo was an Olly project rather than one of Years & Years in comparison with Communion and the previous EPs. Also, this could have seen with how much involvement Olly had in the second album than Mikey and Emre, for example.

Posted by: Mangø Apr 1 2021, 12:02 PM

I'm liking that chorus A LOT!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Apr 4 2021, 10:47 PM

Just watching Olly on Jools, and interestingly he still refers to Y&Y as "we" and "our"

Anyway, he's said the upcoming music is French-house inspired, and influences were Justice and Pet Shop Boys!

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Apr 4 2021, 10:54 PM

That's whet my appetite somewhat!

Posted by: valhalla140 Apr 8 2021, 01:43 AM

This is REALLY good, can see it being a hit in the UK at least.

It kind of sounds like the love child of Meteorite and Shine with some funky french house vibes sprinkled in here and there, especially in the verses.

they only did 'its a sin' before that, they haven't done anything in ages laugh.gif

I like 'Starstruck' but its a little too basic for me and not in a fun 'Play' way.

Posted by: SevenSeize Apr 16 2021, 02:36 PM

Had no idea Y&Y was a solo thing until now laugh.gif

It's a fine pop tune, lacks the flavour of their older hits though

"Crave" has been pushed back until next Tuesday and it makes me think that it could be premiered as the Hottest Record on that day at noon EST / 5pm. GMT, so I guess it will be premiered on Beats 1 instead. Also, teasers of that song have begun.

Practically the entirety of this album’s preorders will come during Q4 anyway, and streaming has made it so that January isn’t particularly any easier than most months of years anyway.

Agreed, it's at least more interesting than 'Stars Truck' but I can't see it being a hit whatsoever.

I think it makes perfect sense for them to have the album in January, it would totally get swallowed up in Q4 and at least then they'll have 3 singles out.

Posted by: chartfridays Sep 28 2021, 08:00 PM

It's a bit better than the last two, but it's still not quite "it". It never really goes anywhere beyond the first minute and repeats itself interminably for the second half.

Some of the vocals on this have been edited so heavily they don't even sound like him!

it feels like its been secretly pushed back since April 2021... it feels like it was planned to come out alongside 'It's A Sin' but after the lackluster performance of the first single, it's been secretly put on hold.

Jan 2022 is a poor album release time so justifies any poor sales.

I like the new track. In fact, each of the songs off this album have been quite different. I deffo want the album but had a problem preordering it from Amazon as it won’t deliver to any location such as the Amazon lockers. Not sure why so will have to buy it from HMV instead.

For what it's worth, the top 10 most currently popular Y&Y songs on Spotify are:

1. Sweet Talker (with Galantis)
2. King
3. Starstruck
4. Breathe (this became a hit on TikTok in 2020)
5. Desire - Gryffin Remix
6. A Second to Midnight (with Kylie Minogue)
7. Crave
8. If You're Over Me
9. Shine
10. Desire

There’s a new interview out with Olly talking about the band’s split. One of the main divisions was that Olly wanted to perform on The X Factor, but the other two deemed it ‘too pop’.

They were alright with All Round to Mrs Brown’s though! But I suppose they did clearly have less creative control for their second album.

Underwhelming on first listen, esp with the heavy rebranding.

Tacking on old hits to up the streams is just embarrassing, not to mention kinda cancels out the rebranding.

Posted by: dannjohn Jan 21 2022, 10:45 AM

the adding of old hits is very odd... i might have understood more if he'd re-recorded the songs... but he hasn't?

I'm also curious why he said there were no slower songs on the record when theres a few... did he change the album?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 21 2022, 03:00 PM

This is basically just average pop music. Not bad or anything for the most part, just not particularly exciting. Plus I do find listening to his/their albums the songs tend to get very repetitive.

its really weird but i thought they were gonna be more indie-pop when they started, the 2nd album was sorta all over the place and now he's come back as a pop star. I think the twinkly, first album vibe is very missed.

There are hints of a good album here... and it's in no means bad... just when the songs are on, their catchy but I haven't walked away obsessed with a particular track.

I don't care how this post comes across or how OTT it sounds but, I wasn't really running to check the album out given nothing this era has really grabbed me. Having seen that songs from the DEBUT are tagged to the end has low-key enraged me though? When did the artform of an album become this watered down that old hits can be tacked onto the end to increase the relevance or chart performance of it. It's so depressing and I really hope the OCC do something about it. I won't be listening to the album because of the sour taste this has left in my mouth :') A complete disregard of integrity and an artistic vision for the music. Again, I know this sounds so OTT and I don't know why I am affected by it but... if the music quality was strong enough - let it do the talking rather than relying on past glories sad.gif

Posted by: J00prstar Jan 21 2022, 08:36 PM

Posted by: -Jay- Jan 21 2022, 09:09 PM

Remember that it’s more than likely the label that thought up the tactic as a means of trying to ensure some chart longevity, so in turn that could lead to more people checking out the album.

In a chart that is already so messed up in numerous respects, I almost can’t blame them for playing the system!

I love Raye but can see why Polydor probably wasn’t the right label for her. Her mini album ‘Euphoric Sad Songs’ did nothing despite being available as a physical, I’m sure this approach is a test by the label before committing to an album and it’s the same approach they took with Mabel and Becky Hill.

Lots of rumours as to why Mabel has quit the label but ultimately her new tracks haven’t set the charts alight either and her ‘Platinum’ album probably only sold a limited amount.

I’m sure Y&Y will depart too - diminishing returns it seems on a big budget release and no major hit single (yet) this era despite lots of profile for Olly via Its A Sin, 2 x Kylie duets, Performance with Elton etc.,

Posted by: Ansel Jan 22 2022, 04:12 PM

Yeah so this isn't anywhere near Communion/Palo Santo but there's still some good stuff here - Sooner Or Later and Night Call are both bops (one of them should've been released instead of Crave tbh) and 20 Minutes is cute.

Posted by: gooddelta Jan 23 2022, 03:36 PM

Whilst I wouldn’t say I was enraged, I do feel similarly. It’s put me off listening to it as well.

I remember similar types of comments when Michael Jackson released History, many viewed it as tagging on a disc if greatest hits to inflate the sales of a new album that the label didn’t have confidence in.

Also didn’t Olly Murs do something similar not so long ago?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jan 26 2022, 10:36 AM

I do agree it is really desperate and tacky, but in all honestly it didn't bother me that much in terms of the listening experience. I just stopped listening at track 16 knowing the rest isn't actually part of the album.

I mean fair play to record/management companies for exploiting the chart rules (something which has happened for decades), I just hope this isn’t the start of a new trend - tacking hits on to a new album to inflate sales, could give some artists a real advantage for an album which would need to battle it out on its own merit otherwise.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Jan 26 2022, 12:21 PM

Olly Murs did, but it was billed from the start as half new album/half greatest hits.

Posted by: Bjork Jan 26 2022, 12:40 PM

exactly, Olly Murs was a dual new album/greatest hits
he didn't release a new album and then a second version with the greatest hits added

Posted by: Brer Jan 26 2022, 04:14 PM

Yeah I think this feels a bit different and more cynical than the Olly Murs album, if this was being marketed as a mix of old hits and new material that would be one thing but it's not as far as I'm aware, it really just comes across as a zero effort move to have it leech off the streams of the older hits to stay in the chart longer. I can't blame the label for taking advantage of the system this way but this really feels like something the OCC should have a look at (I don't have too much of a problem with double counting streams for a studio album and a greatest hits but having the same streams count towards two different studio albums by the same artist is harder to defend).

This is of course assuming that the streams of those songs are actually counting towards the album, which tbf I'm not sure if we know?

I'm not a huge fan of the Mabel / Jax Jones strategy of endlessly adding new songs either but again it doesn't feel quite as slimy as this Y&Y move, at least the added songs there are current material so part of the same 'era' even if not necessarily intended for the album per se.

Posted by: JulianT Jan 26 2022, 04:46 PM

^ I thought the rule was that the streams wouldn’t be double counted but they’ll be counted to whatever the biggest selling Y&Y album of the week is each week. So as long as Night Call is the biggest selling Y&Y album all streaming points for King, Shine and so on will be diverted to Night Call.

I find it hard to blame anyone for playing the game well and using tricks within the rules that help the chart position. As others have said you can still enjoy the new part of the album and stop there. Clearly it’s not how things should be though.

Posted by: Frenchie Jan 26 2022, 05:30 PM

That’s how it works in the US. I’m fairly certain in the UK the streams of a song count to every album that they appear on.

Posted by: Brer Jan 26 2022, 11:49 PM

That's (at least supposed to be) the rule when it comes to compilations but I don't think it applies to studio albums. Might be wrong though, it's not exactly a common scenario for songs to be featured on two separate studio albums.

Either way, it's leeching away streams from completely different eras.

Courtesy of Jade's personal chart I've checked out 'Reflection' and that is by far and away much better than all of the singles were so hooray for there at least being one song from this era that I can get behind. The title track is pretty good too.

Excuse me! I think you’ll find that the first one is a “New Year’s Edition”. laugh.gif

He’s on Graham Norton next Friday though not sure if he’s performing or not. I’d imagine he would perform the current single as it’s still rising on the chart.

He'll be performing 'Hallucination' with Regard.

Nope. It's a reject from the album that Regard jumped on and remixed.

Pretty sure it'll be added on to it soon though.

Night Call has performed above expectations and should achieve Gold certification.

I think there was a rule change that has stopped the 'greatest hits' tagged on at the end from counting towards this album's weekly sales - purely speculating but Jay noted this and Mabel's 'High Expectations' both abruptly dropped out of the chart in the same week (with the latter having similarly been leeching a lot of its streams from songs off the 'Ivy To Roses' mixtape). So that'll significantly slow any progress this album was making towards a respectable total. Entirely fairly, it was always a slimy tactic.

^and consequently it's no longer top 100, don't think it's gonna progress much than the 60K it reached recently...
