England's second game of the World Cup 2018 tournament is against Panama

The game is live on BBC. Please use this thread for speculation, pre and post match chat on the England game.

Will this be similar to their match against Trinidad & Tobago in Germany 2006?

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 20 2018, 11:43 AM

Probably. We should get the win but it certainly won't be convincing, in terms of scoreline or performance. 1 or 2-0 perhaps.

Posted by: Doctor Blind Jun 20 2018, 11:56 AM

I think with the pressure off somewhat we could see quite a comfortable victory here - something like 3-0.

I was quite pessimistic with my predictions for the Tunisia game so I'm going somewhat the opposite way here, although I could see us stalling again and only making a late 1-0 breakthrough.

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Jun 20 2018, 12:02 PM

I watched on a youtube video that a commentator was like "could they start going all the way to win the World Cup?" laugh.gif

I think England will take it slow as usual.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 20 2018, 12:08 PM

I'm sure it would have been tongue in cheek tongue.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 22 2018, 09:59 PM

Probably goalless first half, plenty of fouls from Panama if they play like they did against Belgium and then two in the second half.

Alli looking likely to miss the game.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 22 2018, 10:11 PM

I'm pretty confident this match will be a goal fest to England or a snoozefest. heehee.gif

Now which option shall I pick thinking.gif

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Jun 23 2018, 03:42 AM

I am thinking more scoring in the last five minutes of the game.

Posted by: Rooney Jun 24 2018, 09:55 AM

Looks like Sterling is set to start.

I'm going to go for a dogged 2-0 victory. Panama to set up defending the Alamo, England to start well but the heat eventually will be a factor and slow the pace of the game down.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 11:11 AM

Loftus-Cheek also set to start for England. Expect a few yellows from Panama.

Posted by: mdh Jun 24 2018, 11:19 AM

We're good enough to beat them convincingly, but if we start to slip up here in the first half then I can see it being a tough game.

Posted by: Crazy Chris Jun 24 2018, 11:28 AM

No doubt that England will win 4-0.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 11:29 AM

A game that only England could f*** up.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 11:37 AM

Worst case scenario, f*** it up in the dying seconds of the second half. On paper they should easily ram 5 goals or more unless they hit the flipping woodwork.

And I've got my England flag hanging outside cheer.gif

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 24 2018, 11:50 AM

Is it a requirement for the England team to have a really dull sounding voice?

Posted by: ElectroBoy Jun 24 2018, 11:56 AM

Some questionable lip syncing there

This

0-0 or 5-0 to Panama

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 12:09 PM

Plenty of space there for Stones to score.

Posted by: Steve201 Jun 24 2018, 12:10 PM

1-0 already, that'll settle them down. Can't wait to watch the big knockout games now after that Germany game last night, hope they're not too defensive!

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 12:23 PM

It's Panama, Guy Mowbray.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds Jun 24 2018, 12:23 PM

2 goals up - both from set play as well! Oops at the commentator calling Panama 'Tunisia' though tongue.gif

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 12:36 PM

Easy peasy 3-0

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 12:37 PM

We have now scored the total than we have in the last 2 World Cups.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 24 2018, 12:39 PM

Really pleased for Lingard. After missing some good chances against Tunisia that was a real cracker.

Posted by: Iz Jun 24 2018, 12:40 PM

Naysayers on England getting cocky, ha! biggrin.gif

That’s quite enough self-deprecation, thank you!

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 12:40 PM

A second goal for Stones. 4-0 up.

Posted by: Jade Jun 24 2018, 12:41 PM

Smashing it with 4 goals and it's not even half time yet ohmy.gif g'won!

Posted by: Brett-Butler Jun 24 2018, 12:41 PM

There are so many Lightning Seeds songs they could play after England scores. "Pure", "Marvellous", "Sugar Coated Iceberg" or "Change". They don't have to go for "Three Lions" each time.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 24 2018, 12:41 PM

Getting ahead of Belgium on goal difference is a real possibility now.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 12:42 PM

Well Panama are cooked, no chance f***ing it up

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 12:43 PM

Penalty again biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 12:45 PM

Another penalty for England.

Posted by: Cqmerqn Jun 24 2018, 12:46 PM

IT'S COMING HOME!

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jun 24 2018, 12:50 PM

This doesn’t feel real, I’ve rarely seen a team slaying this much let alone US mellow.gif

Great to see Panama not getting away with their rough play, I’d feel for them usually, but they’ve been shameful.

Posted by: Steve201 Jun 24 2018, 12:53 PM

I would t get too excited it Panama, need to beat a decent side and see where yous can go!

Also why is the stadium playing Three Lions when England score?! Bit weird, plus World in motion is much better!

Posted by: Bré Jun 24 2018, 12:53 PM

Nice to see the ref actually giving us our obvious penalties this time... laugh.gif

We need one more so we only need a tie against Belgium to top the group ;o

They play a team from Group H in the 2nd round which is Senegal/Japan/Poland/Columbia so won't matter too much which one, its the quarters when it'll be very difficult.

Posted by: The Snake Jun 24 2018, 12:55 PM

Panama have been awful, I think it will only get worse for them in the second half, I can also see them having a player sent off soon too.

I think it will be about 8-0, I don't think England will have quite the same intensity in the second half, but still should get a few more.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 12:56 PM

He should rest the key players now for the Belgium game, a few substitutions.

Posted by: Iz Jun 24 2018, 12:57 PM

45 minutes to make this the most one-sided match this cup.

It is coming HOME (also it’s because Panama are hot garbage, imagine there being teams in NA worse than them)

Posted by: UltraReputation Jun 24 2018, 12:59 PM

I'm shook af so far, this game has been lit *.*

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 01:04 PM

This could either be a dull second half or more goals.

Posted by: Brett-Butler Jun 24 2018, 01:09 PM

Interesting that the commentator said that England's record score was 13-0 against Northern Ireland in 1882, a full 40 years before Northern Ireland was even a thing. More research required...

Oops.

My psychic senses are a bit off. I thought it was 5-0 to Panama. It is 5-0 to England. My bad. I need to tune me third eye.

Hoping for them to play Pure Shores after the game

Posted by: Rooney Jun 24 2018, 01:11 PM

I don't even think England have been that great to be honest, certainly not as easy on the eye as against Tunisia. I mean Panama are absolute dog, they're barely even a League 2 side.

But saying that we do have a chance after seeing all the other teams so far.. surely the 'easier' path to the semi-finals is by finishing 2nd in this group though.

A hat trick for Kane then, the 3rd England player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup.

I wonder if Tunisia can score 6 against them laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 01:24 PM

That could have been a goal for Panama there.

Posted by: Dobbo Jun 24 2018, 01:26 PM

So how did Belgium ONLY score 3 against these guys? laugh.gif

We've doubled our biggest ever victory in a WC as it stands.

Posted by: The Snake Jun 24 2018, 01:26 PM

I thought Nizhny Novgorod where they are playing was the same Novgorod which is one of the oldest towns in Russia but apparently that is Veliky Novgorod and is nowhere near it.

Anyway 6-0 now ohmy.gif

Posted by: Queef of Skreech Jun 24 2018, 01:28 PM

Oops 6-0. My third eye is third eye blind reet narw

Same as Tunisia, different game. Panama needed to be more open and get something from the game.

England caught sleeping there.

I still wouldn't play Rashford and drop Sterling. I really like Rashford but he is not as good as Sterling. Loftus-Cheek look great the other evening, but has struggled to majorly influence the game today. I think Rashford would be very similar. I suspect Southgate will make some changes regardless, but Sterling has got to start any game that has meaning for me.

Again as I've said before our weakness is our backline. We've conceded some sloppy chances against some poor teams, could easily do the same if not worse against better opposition. Stones is magnificent, but I think is Maguire overrated.

Posted by: Mart!n Jun 24 2018, 01:55 PM

Job done, easiest route go for runner up place, let Belgium win. laugh.gif

Posted by: Evil Houdini Jun 24 2018, 02:02 PM

Panama are a pub side at best tbh. You cant get too excited based off that but what can be said is that England look like more of threat on the attack than most of England's previous tournament teams. Belgium will be a much tougher opponent for England and that would give a better indication of how England are shaping up. I was happy to see Man United's Jesse Lingard play well and score an excellent goal.

Posted by: mdh Jun 24 2018, 02:06 PM

Think it's one thing to be cynical but Panama can't be that bad if they qualified. Absolutely class performance.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jun 24 2018, 02:16 PM

Panama got their goal in the end which their fans were clearly happy about, and we even managed to get another one even if it was a bit weak. That ended great. I can't remember the last time I felt that relaxed watching England! laugh.gif

Ofc. it's no indication for Belgium, although it's worth noting that we defeated Panama by a much bigger landslide than they did, but then we didn't do as well as we should've against Tunisia either so it works both ways. Should be an interesting match even if I'm not convinced we'll beat them.

Posted by: Bré Jun 24 2018, 02:26 PM

Job well done England. Now technically top of the group due to Belgium having one more yellow card laugh.gif

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Jun 24 2018, 02:33 PM

Who wouldn't thought? I honestly England would score at the last minute. laugh.gif

Belgium would be a real challenge.

I know how England has always relied on set goal, free kick and corners to score so if any teams don't commit any fouls, it would deny at least 50% of England offense power.

Posted by: King Rollo Jun 24 2018, 03:29 PM

Great to see England playing so well. We'll find out against Belgium and then in the 2nd round how good they actually are.

They've massively overachieved by getting to the World Cup but their qualifying campaign sees them play teams in central & North America so the USA, Costa Rica and Mexico are their toughest challenge!

Good to see a positive performance and a comfortable win though!

I'm a skeptic, but I cannot see Belgium outclassing England. Like us they have a lot of gaps and chances are they will be without Lukaku and Hazard. On paper they are probably better than us, but having the best players on paper doesn't always equate to success as seen with England in 2006!

Posted by: Jacob~ Jun 24 2018, 05:18 PM

Had 20p on England leading 5-0 at half time at 190/1 so got £38 for that haha, if only I'd put a bit more on, like even 50p- but I'm not going there. Banking that though, pretty chuffed. Also had a bit (all tiny ones) on Kane scoring 1, 2 and getting a hat-trick so got around a fiver on that too. Lost a few but doesn't really matter because I split the bets into tiny ones and it seems to have worked out, think I only put £4.50 on this match in total. Means I've made a profit from betting so far which seems very unusual so for the most part I'm quitting while I'm this far ahead.

Amazing to see England doing so well and getting through to the knockouts for certain, feels like a long time since we had a team looking this good. Not holding my breath in terms of progressing beyond quarters or even the round of 16 but this was a moment in itself, highest scoring match (for one side) of the tournament I believe, a few 5s in there but pretty sure this is the only 6.

Posted by: Mack. Jun 24 2018, 06:47 PM

If England and Belgium draw, first place will be determined by Fair Play points.

Yeah I agree with this. If we keep up our current form we'll be fine against them. We just need to be careful we don't give them as much space as we gave Panama because they'll be all over us if we do that! I'm going for a 2-1 England win.
