Michael Jackson's Top 60 songs on the Official Chart
27 August 2018 | By Rob Copsey

We reveal the King of Pop's biggest hits on what would have been his 60th birthday.

August 29 2018 would have been Michael Jackson's 60th birthday. The King of Pop died almost ten years ago, at the age of 50, leaving behind an incredible legacy of music that played out and discovered by new generations today.

To mark the occasion, Official Charts has teamed up with BBC Radio 2 to reveal his Top 60 biggest singles in the UK, based on physical singles, digital downloads and audio streams up to June 2018.

Not including his work with the Jackson 5 and Jacksons, Michael's solo career has seen him land 55 Top 40s on the Official Singles Chart, seven of which have reached Number 1. View Michael Jackson's Official Chart history in full.

As the lead singer of the Jackson 5 aged just 11, Michael helped to land 12 Top 40s on the Official Singles Chart. Their biggest single in the UK is their 1970 debut, I Want You Back, which places at Number 3 on Michael's all-time chart with combined sales of 918,000. 44% of its overall figure comes from streaming, proving the track remains as popular as ever today.

Two years later, Michael released his debut solo single Got To Be There, a ballad that reached Number 5 on the Official Chart and ranks as his 47th biggest single with combined sales of 174,000.

It would take nearly a decade for Michael to land his first UK Number 1 single with Motown ballad One Day In Your Life. Released after classics such as Rock With You (399k) and Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (812k), the song spent two weeks at the summit in June 1981. It's not remembered as fondly as some of his other hits, but still places at Number 5 on his all-time chart with 790,000 combined sales. 93% of that figure is made up of physical singles, showing how popular it was at the time.

From then, Michael was a regular at the top end of the charts, and his '80s singles make up the bulk of his all-time Top 20. 1987 chart-topper I Just Can't Stop Loving You featuring Siedah Garrett is at 20 (464k); follow-up single Bad is at 16 (491k); Smooth Criminal ranks at 12 (614k) and The Way You Make Me Feel places at 11 (645k).

Two very different Michael Jackson songs feature at the very top end of the Top 60. 1995's Earth Song is at Number 2 with 1.27 million combined sales (82% of which are physical sales), while 1983's Billie Jean is his biggest single in the UK with 1.44 million combined sales. Released as the second single from his Thriller album in 1983, it was the song that took Michael to a new level and kick started what was to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. With a roughly even split between physical (44%), downloads (29%) and streaming (28%), Billie Jean is one of Michael's tracks that has weathered the dramatic changes in how we consume music and truly stood the test of time.

Billie Jean must be a million seller. If streams make up 28% of 1.44 million, that means the remaining 72% is a total of 1,036,800.

BTW, "physical (44%), downloads (29%) and streaming (28%)" equates to 101%.

Probably the greatest music artist ever.

Firstly, Billie Jean has overtaken Earth Song, cheer.gif

So many "Dangerous" songs low down on the list for my taste, such as "Give In To Me", "Who Is It", "In The Closet".

And I love that "One Day In Your Life" is so high up on that list, no-one seems to remember it or know of it but I think it's such a beautiful song.

I've just noticed a few mistakes on the list, if "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" has higher sales than "One Day In Your Life" then why is "DSTYGE" at 6 and "ODIYL" at 5.

Also "Thriller" went Platinum (600k) recently based on post 2005 sales of downloads and streams alone, so if you added its physical single sales from the 80's too it would be surely be higher up that list.

I've compiled my own top 60 for MJ as these ones are in the wrong order for me tongue.gif I'll run it tomorrow, though there are only 6 tracks difference from my own MJ charts performances which is amazingly consistent. Just that most of them are in a different order.

I will point out though that really Do The Bartman should be in it on UK sales as really it was Michael Jackson featuring The Simpsons - he wrote and produced it and sang on it, and ditto Rockwell's Somebody's Watching You. One of those has qualified for my run.....

Who Is It? is without doubt my favourite Michael Jackson track, I've been hooked on its production ever since release and it's never gotten old for me. Brothers In Rhythm did a pretty good remix of it too (which doesn't appear to be available on iTunes or spotify after a quick look) although I do now prefer the original again.

I love Michael Jackson, but I've never heard of One Day in Your Life. The fact that it's his 4th biggest solo song is astonishing.

Was his first UK No.1 on the Motown label in 1981.

I am skeptical of the Billie Jean sales considering the figures released when they announced the millionaires. As of mid-September it was 1,095,919 combined, with 252,869 based on streaming.
Struggling to see how it has picked up around 350,000 units between sept 17 and June 18, unless they have backdated video streams too. Even then, the streaming ratio should be much greater than 28%.

I probably shouldn't be surprised, but wasn't expecting Love Never Felt So Good to be top 15, ahead of so many classics. Is it getting decent trickle streams?

you'd think Don't Matter To Me would have done enough to make his top 60 already unless they aren't counting it for being just a feature?

I don't know for sure about the UK specifically, but on Spotify worldwide, it's held up remarkably well (to my frustration because I never liked it lol). With versions combined, his most played songs are:

405m - Billie Jean
265m - I Want You Back [The Jackson 5] (256m original + 9m 1988 remix)
246m - Beat It
229m - Love Never Felt So Good (146m with Justin Timberlake + 73m solo version + 10m original recording)
179m - Don't Matter To Me [Drake with Michael Jackson]
171m - Thriller (137m 5:58 album version + 33m 5:12 single version)
151m - Black Or White (87m 3:23 single version + 64m 4:15 album version)
150m - Man In The Mirror
143m - ABC [The Jackson 5]
131m - Smooth Criminal
124m - The Way You Make Me Feel (99m 4:58 album version + 25m 4:26 single version)
124m - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (105m 6:05 album version + 18m 3:56 single version)
115m - P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
89m - Rock With You (77m 3:41 album version + 11m 3:23 single version)
76m - They Don't Care About Us
74m - Bad
67m - Remember The Time
62m - Dirty Diana
60m - Blame It On The Boogie [The Jacksons]
57m - Hold My Hand [with Akon]
57m - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (50m 6:03 album version + 6m 4:17 single version)
53m - Human Nature (44m 4:06 album version + 9m 3:45 single version)
47m - You Rock My World (20m 4:26 radio edit + 16m 5:38 album version + 10m 5:08 album edit)
43m - Heal The World
43m - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town [The Jackson 5]
41m - You Are Not Alone (23m 5:46 album version + 15m 4:56 single version + 2m 4:34 radio edit)
41m - Earth Song (31m 6:46 album version + 9m 5:01 radio edit)

That placement is somewhat helped by being a 2014 hit, but it's still amongst his highest gainers. His plays in the last 12 months are roughly so:

179m - Don't Matter To Me
~145m - Billie Jean
~95m - I Want You Back (+ maybe a tiny bit for that remix, which I'm guessing only has non-miniscule plays because it comes up first if you search 'Michael Jackson - I Want You Back')
~84m - Beat It
~50m - Black Or White (~35m single + ~15m album)
~48m - Love Never Felt So Good (~36m with JT + ~11m solo)
~48m - Thriller (+ some for the 2nd version)
~43m - Smooth Criminal
~43m - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (+ some for the 2nd version)
~40m - ABC
~36m - P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)
~34m - Man In The Mirror
~32m - The Way You Make Me Feel (+ some for the 2nd version)
~32m - Rock With You (+ some for the 2nd version)

For a non-Spotify comparison, I don't know if there are significant multiple versions warping the picture, but it appears to be his 9th most viewed video on YouTube and 11th highest by current average: (via Kworb)

1 Michael Jackson - Thriller (Official Video) 537,253,851 189,198

^Thanks! That's definitely better than I expected it to be doing four years later, even with the three different versions on Spotify.

I'm also surprised at the relatively low streams for Bad!

Quite disappointed actually that Billie Jean has overtaken Earth Song. I always liked that quirk that everyone always assumed Billie Jean was his biggest hit in the UK but it wasn't even in the top 3.

As my favourite artist ever, I have been wait for Billie Jean to cross 1 million sales for a while...has it done it officially now? It feels like it must have if the 1.4m figure is correct.
