The biggest songs Ryan Tedder has written with other artists, including Beyonce, Leona Lewis and Maroon 5
19 March 2019 | By Rob Copsey Ryan Tedder's reputation as a super-songwriter - that is, his track record for knocking out a hit for someone else - has been solid for well over a decade now. His big break arrived in 2007, when he co-wrote Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love with Jesse McCartney. It was originally intended for Jesse's third album Departure but his label passed on it - something Jessie was no doubt slightly miffed about when Leona's powerhouse version topped the charts across the world. Its success sent label A&Rs and other artists falling over themselves to work with him, and so far it has resulted in another two Number 1s on the Official UK Chart, plus a flurry of Top 40 hits - most recently as co-writer of the Jonas Brothers comeback track Sucker, which recently debuted at Number 1 in America and became their first UK Top 10. While all this has been going on, he's scored a Number 1 and a further seven Top 40 singles as the frontman of folk-pop rockers OneRepublic. In the UK, the biggest single Ryan has written or co-written for someone else is Ella Henderson's Ghost: a Number 1 and near-inescapable song in 2014 that has notched up 1.56m combined sales to date. Speaking at the time, Ryan and Ella described Ghost as one of those heat-of-the-moment songs, writing the chorus in the first 10 minutes of meeting each other. Bleeding Love ranks as Ryan's second biggest co-write on 1.5m, just ahead of Beyonce's Halo on 1.39m - a Top 5 hit in 2008 and a song that remains a staple of her live show. Ryan's other UK Number 1 by another artist, Ellie Goulding's Burn, is fourth on 1.2m. Ryan is a popular collaborator with female artists - Adele, Birdy, Jordin Sparks and Demi Lovato also feature in his songwriter Top 20 - but his hate rate with men (so to speak) is still strong. Aside from Jonas Brothers, who don't quite make it into Ryan's Top 20 yet, are Ed Sheeran's Happier (929k), Olly Murs' Seasons and James Blunt's Bonfire Heart (618k), a surprise hit in 2013 that earned James his first Top 10 hit in six years. Interesting that both Halo and Burn were shipped to Leona first, so she'd potentially have 3 in the top 5.
I still prefer her version of Burn. The vocal is awesome. Gutted she never recorded Halo. |

HOLY
'Ghost' being a bigger selling single than 'Bleeding Love' despite the latter being performed and promoted on almost a yearly basis. I'm sure 'Bleeding Love' will overtake soon enough though. |

Halo was never Leona's. Ryan explained the situation. QUOTE There was this huge scandal that originally 'Halo' was meant to go to Leona. That was never the case.
I'm putting that rumour to bed right now. That song was written for Beyonce. What happened was that Beyonce waited long enough to record that song that I had no communication with her and didn't know if she was going to do it or not. I thought this would be a brilliant first single for Leona, which it would have. When you have a song as special as 'Halo', you don't want anyone else to sit on it. So sometimes you have to pull the whole, 'Well, I'm going to get someone else on it', to prove a point. What I did was foolishly say to Leona's camp, 'I have it on hold for another A-list artist and I'm pretty sure they'll take it, but if they don't, I just want to know if you like it enough to consider it. I sent it to them and they flipped on it. They loved it and instantly said they wanted to do it. I was like, 'Wait, wait, wait, no, it's not free yet! It's just in case. |

Ah yeah that's right, I had actually read that before. Still, it was close. I'd have loved to have heard Leona's take on it, but of course Beyonce's is brilliant.

Does that make Ghost the biggest selling X Factor original i.e. non-cover song? I'm really shocked it's sold more than Bleeding Love!

I think Ghost is only really ahead of Bleeding Love because it was released around the peak of downloads and streaming then took off. Bleeding Love was released in a much lower sales climate and it was years before streaming took hold. I still see Bleeding Love as the bigger single. Good for Ella though, deserved!

I dunno about burn i doubt it would have been as big for leona she was already on a big decline and those sort of songs never sold huge for her (e.g. forgive me and collide) now halo possibly halo could have been |

I never would have imagined 'Ghost' being bigger than 'Bleeding Love'. Think this is more to do with coming out at a time when they didn’t really get the sales/streams balance right in the charts. Having said that, the song was hammered the year it came out and was used in ads etc, something bleeding love is not catered for. |

Probably like Rihanna's, but with a more powerhouse vocal. There are people who have heard her version and it's apparently very similar, aside from the vocals. The rumour was that it was a piano version at first, but someone later came out to say that wasn't true and it was just like the version we know now. |

I always find it bizarre how some songs float around and are offered to everybody in the business
and it's almost a lottery who ends up recording it |
