    Andrew's Review
Now That’s What I Call Music! 89 also known as Now 89 was released in the late Autumn of 2014. It was a 45 track compilation with 10 UK #1 singles. It became the first volume in the series to feature music from Meghan Trainor, Hozier and Charli XCX (as a lead artist).

The most talked about omission from the time was the notable absence of Taylor Swift with what at the time became her best selling single Shake It Off. It sparked some further controversy when Taylor Swift not only forbid her music being on compilations but also on streaming services like Spotify. Other omissions from this time came from Union J, Neon Jungle, Labrinth, Bakermat, Ella Eyre, Rizzle Kicks, Watermδt and Chris Brown to name a handful.

This was the only volume in the series to have music included from Nico & Vinz, MAGIC!, Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir, G.R.L., Lilly Wood, Jeremih (as a lead artist), Waze & Odyssey, Wankelmut, ZHU, Parra For Cuva, Ten Walls, The Magician and Melissa Steel (as a lead artist).

Artwork Rating: 7/10 Very Good
I’m always a fan of a dark themed cover for the winter volumes, and this one is no exception. It’s not very obvious unless you look closely that this artwork features ice sculptures of a swan, a bear, three penguins and what I can only describe from the angle is a gargoyle, but I’m not certain. Either way it’s a very sophisticated design and the northern lights are a nice touch too.

Disc 1 Favourite: Tom Odell – Real Love
This song, albeit a cover of a Beatles song for a John Lewis advert, is my favourite output by Tom Odell, it’s beautifully sung and would probably be my favourite song from a John Lewis advert too.

Disc 2 Favourite: David Guetta feat. Sam Martin – Lovers On The Sun
A new sound from David from the electronic sounds contained in his last few singles. This UK #1 single was a favourite of mine at the time and received many plays too! Still sounding so fresh.

Disc 3 Tracklist:
(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Taylor Swift – Shake It Off 3:39 {2}
2. Union J – Tonight (We Live Forever) 3:20 {9}
3. Bars And Melody – Hopeful 2:49 {5}
4. Labrinth – Let It Be 3:06 {11}
5. Eminem feat. Sia – Guts Over Fear 5:01 {10}
6. Neon Jungle – Louder 3:24 {14}
7. Kendrick Lamar – i 3:51 {20}
8. Rizzle Kicks – Tell Her 3:21 {14}
9. Ella Eyre – Comeback 3:22 {12}
10. Oliver $ & Jimi Jules – Pushing On 2:43 {15}
11. Bakermat – One Day (Vandaag) 3:38 {15}
12. Watermδt – Bullit 3:15 {15}
13. Gorgon City feat. Zak Abel – Unmissable 3:38 {19}
14. Shift K3y – I Know 3:14 {25}
15. Krishane feat. Melissa Steel – Drunk And Incapable 3:20 {27}
16. Wilkinson feat. Talay Riley – Dirty Love 3:43 {20}
17. LuvBug feat. Talay Riley – Resonance 3:26 {13}
18. Usher feat. Nicki Minaj – She Came To Give It To You 4:02 {16}
19. Chris Brown feat. Usher & Rick Ross – New Flame 4:03 {10}
20. Calvin Harris feat. Big Sean – Open Wide 3:07 {23}
21. Lethal Bizzle feat. JME & Tempa T – Rari WorkOut 3:26 {11}
22. X Ambassadors feat. Jamie N Commons – Jungle 3:09 {18}
23. Brian Wilson & Various Artists – God Only Knows 2:25 {20}
----------
Total time: 1:19:02

Overall Rating: 7/10 Very Good
It’s a good volume this but it doesn’t push the boundaries for me in terms of music quality and variety. A few risky inclusions that didn’t pay off, and of course a major omission from Taylor Swift at the time which lets it down. I like the artwork, and the fact that we had another big tracklisting, very nearly reaching the maximum capacity allowed in terms of disc time. A good way to end 2014.

Andrew's Best 5 (as of June 2018)

2. Sigma feat. Paloma Faith – Changing

Artwork: 8/10:
I like the colours of this, the whole northern lights part is very pretty. But the ice sculptures aren't really noticeable, in fact I've only just realised now that's what they are laugh.gif

Overall: 9/10
Another great Now album, not quite as good as 88 but very strong in it's own right. This album contains some of my favourite songs from certain artists (Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Sam Smith) but also has a few forgettable songs which I have never gone back to.. at all. The charity single is a nice inclusion but not one I like, nor one I would think should come at #8 in the tracklist - usually charity singles come last but apparently not here.

Taylor Swift is the biggest omission but obviously that wasn't Now's fault, same for Eminem. Bakermat, Watermat, X Ambassadors, The Script, Maroon 5 (x2), OneRepublic, & Charli XCX are good songs I would've liked too - but then 4 of those artists are on this album already with better songs sooo.. not a huge loss. laugh.gif Fall Out Boy is an odd omission though I think.

I like Now 89, perhaps a little better than Now 88, despite that CD's strength. Disc 2 is great only ruined by Anaconda at the end! Nevertheless it is another NOW album to capture the dance music era.

My favourite 5:
OneRepublic - Love Runs Out
David Guetta feat. Sam Martin - Lovers On The Sun
Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne - Real Love
Duke Dumont - Won't Look Back
Lilly Wood & Robin Schulz - Prayer In C

Also love My Head Is A Jungle and Walking With Elephant. Of the omissions it would have been nice to have Bakermat and Shift K3y but the latter only got 25 so not such a surprise.
