Top 40 Chart Commentary

• As the chart returns from holiday mode there is still no change at the top, with 'Heaven' furthering its lead as the longest running #1 of the year so far - up to 8 weeks now and unlikely to be overtaken any time soon. It is also a record 17th consecutive week at #1 for Avicii as an artist, as he has not given up the top spot since 'SOS' was released. Avicii also remains at #3 and #4 with 'Tough Love' and 'Bad Reputation', though 'SOS' falls down to #10.

• Our BJSC entry this month 'Overkill' was an unfortunate flop in the contest but it remains at #2 for a third week since it debuted there giving Riot their first hit. The most interesting movements in the top 10 come from Kygo, whose 'Higher Love' continues to climb going up to #8, and Meduza who shoot back into the top 10 with 'Piece Of Your Heart' at #9.

• Gareth Emery's collaborative album 'Kingdom United' was only released a few months ago but he is already back on his own again. 'Mezzanine' is his first track outside of the KU project since 'Take Everything' from December of last year, and his first released track with no collaborator since 2016 (also his first hit here with no collaborator). It enters at #11 giving him his 21st hit (and 16th of this year including all 14 tracks of 'Kingdom United'). He denies himself another top 10 hit as 'Amber Sun' and 'Holograms' remain there.

• Dezza's first hit 'Cold Outside' races into the top 20 at #19. First hits for AJ Tracey and AZ2A continue to climb too and sit just outside the top 20. Nora En Pure got her 14th hit with 'Heart Beating' two weeks ago. It climbs to #28 this week. Dominic Fike's first hit '3 Nights' climbs to #29.

• Trance producer Alexander Popov enters at #32 with 'Legacy', which becomes his first hit, and also the first for featured act Julia Violin. Two more trance acts sit below; Andrew Rayel gets his 4th hit with 'Take All Of Me' at #33. It features Haliene who gets her 10th hit, which now includes 2 collabs with Rayel. Mark Sixma also gets his 2nd hit with 'Million Miles' at #38.

• End of the World were unheard of until this week, but thanks to a Clean Bandit feature they now get their first hit with 'Lost' at #35. Not that Clean Bandit will guarantee a hit though, they now have 12 of them but recent singles 'Baby' and 'Mama' both missed the top 40 (with 'Mama' having missed the entire top 100).

• Sofi Tukker were stuck at #41 with 'Swing' for the last 2 weeks but now climb to #36, getting their 7th hit (3rd of this year). At #37 is the overall chart's biggest climber for Crazy Cousinz with 'Amnesia' - their first hit and the 3rd for featured vocalist Alex Mills.
