I'd guess:
Riton - just outside the Top 20, it's doing nicely on streaming so that might help
Tinie/Zara - maybe scrape a chart play? will probably become bigger over time though

Apparently there's a new Fifth Harmony single coming as well, I expect that'll pop in at #2/3 on iTunes off their fanbase

Iconic from Usher! laugh.gif

Interested to see how Riton and Tinie do. The new release strategy should help 'Girls Like' become a long running hit but miss #1. I heard somebody compare 'Rinse & Repeat' as a mix between 'Jack' and 'Wet Dollars' which is spot on.

A certain user has been adamant that Riton will "definitely be #1", I think they may get egg on their face regarding that. I can see it maybe going top 15 though.

Also 'iT’s YoU'?! What kind of case abomination is this? I used to see children type like that in the early 2000s.

Posted by: JosephStyles 26th February 2016, 12:48 PM

PILLOWTALK had some build-up and hype, iT's YoU didn't have that and isn't a proper single, so it's clear why it's not doing so well! Not actually heard it yet oops.

Fifth Harmony's album pre-order is on iTunes, I clicked on the deluxe and it said Work From Home is available to buy, so I clicked to download it and it says it's unavailable drama.gif They need to sort this out cause this song is AMAZING.

Posted by: Rob S~ 26th February 2016, 12:52 PM

Yay at Kelly having such a big boost from an American Idol performance <3 its far preferable to 'Invincible' imo so it'd be nice if it peaked higher than that. I'd suspect it will drop later though!

Just listened to that song out of curiosity and I can kind of see it. But I much prefer Zayn's voice to Nathan's. 'It's You' is more sultry R&B.

On a negative note, I really hate Zayn's album cover. The "let's put a picture of myself when I was a kid on my album cover" trend is getting boring.

I'm finding it a bit odd that the version of When We Were Young that's comfortably inside the top 5 is decreasing really quickly, but the less visible 2nd version is still getting dark green updates.

I really wish they had deleted one version.

It's selling not 50% but 100% more than the rest: 1/0.5=2 (2-1)*100%=100%. So even more impressive!

I tried listening to that new Carly song (as it's Carly) and lasted just over a minute before I had to switch off in disgust. Though I get that it's a specific theme song for a TV show, so it's okay.

That new Carly track is alright, but not a patch on her usual standards. But as mr_pmt mentioned it's for a TV show so it was unlikely to be that amazing anyway. I had a similar reaction to Zedd's Candyman, as that is more or less an advert for MnMs tongue.gif

"Hope There's Someone" by Antony and the Johnsons was actually performed by one of Ricky Wilson's team (Voice) but Boy George performed on their Debut Album, guess he used his influence to put this song up for selection.

I don't see any problems with cover versions. You should just handle them in their places and not compare them to original songs.

For example on a party where I would like to dance and feel myself happy, I wouldn't care what the lyrics are biggrin.gif

Isn't that exactly the point he's making though? Aside from being on top of current trends, that hasn't been very well received, at least not around here. It's that it's touching an originally lyrically dependent song with almost no regard for those lyrics that's what's really getting to people, it's a very clear example of a 'shopping list' cover. Jonas Blue COULD have knocked up some quick meaningless lyrics and released almost the same track. Not that he would have, because this is selling almost entirely on people's familiarity with the track.

It's the same reason Birdy's covers were so panned, covers are very difficult things to get critical acclaim for, especially when lots of people love the original and can't help but compare the two, you often almost NEED to have a singer with a distinct voice themselves (and for them to do something interesting with the track) for it to be well received, because then there's a reason to have both tracks in your life.

Posted by: Dobbo 28th February 2016, 12:56 PM

It's what people want from music. Not everyone's cares for "emotionally touching" or "meaningful lyrics" from a song. To use Fast Car as an example, I love both versions in completely different ways. The original is an all time classic with a fantastic vocal, and the cover is beautifully produced. As soon as you start throwing the "is it as good as the original" line around you'll almost never be able to enjoy a cover ever again (with a few exceptions) which is why I tend to view them as completely separate entities on the most part.

The point I was making was that just because people shouldn't be making 'shopping list' covers of deep meaningful songs doesn't mean they're going to stop doing it. Thankfully most of these flop, but unfortunately we see instances (such as Jonas Blue) actually outpeak the originals and even take their place.

Top version of “Work” down to 0.56 of “7 Years” from its peak of 0.72. It also lost ground on Spotify today so seemingly isn't going to #1 for RiRi.

It was a good song, but wasn't really catchy enough for the charts. Reminds me of MNEK's early singles that were quite niche sounding, which is apt as he produced 'Losing'.

Even Ella Eyre failed to match the success of her features and she released strong pop singles.

There's been so much shit about Rihanna's diction/enunciation in "Work" and it did leave me confused at first listen, but Caribbean patois is a thing guys! This isn't the same thing as Sia (as much as I love her) trying to sing in English while being injected with anesthesia.

But yes, Rihanna getting 16 UK Top 2 hits by the age of 28 is a pretty remarkable achievement! She still has a long way to go to beat Madonna's record of 33 Top 3 singles though.

Why is Love Yourself still in the top 10? haven't people heard enough of this in the past 3 or 4 months?

Just had a new music tip... A new Lethal Bizzle track produced by Diztortion will be premiered on 1Xtra on Thursday night. According to the post, it will 'shutdown' the clubs!

Use this as an excuse to post the video to 'Fester Skank', one of the biggest club tracks of 2015. wub.gif

Yeah definitely went top 10! Thought it was a shame the major label dropped him after it failed to go top 10 officially even though Fester Skank ended up being widely successful anyway. With major label backing, 'Playground' could have charted in the top 40.

He won the Oscar for Best Original Song and also performed at the ceremony. It's also the reason for Lady Gaga climbing back up the chart (she was nominated and performed too).

Reminds me of songs like 'I Don't Like It, I Love It' and 'I Need Your Love' from last year - nothing groundbreaking, but extremely catchy summery songs!

That Angel & Haile song is really good, almost a UK version of 'Don't' sonically. Be surprised if Angel was on another chart hit though and WSTRN are taking their time to follow-up 'In2' (although they'll almost certainly never beat it laugh.gif).

I think it was a case where the song became much bigger than the artist - like Meridian Dan or Krept & Konan. Although I thought Fuse ODG would be a one-hit wonder after Antenna, so I'm hope I'm wrong!

Combined she's #30 on iTunes, I don't think it will go top #40 in the official chart unless she promoted in the UK but I'm delighted she's going to get another top 75 hit from this campaign, she really deserves it.

In the current century Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavoured Water by Limp Bizkit is the record holder in the UK.

Previous to that in 1971 there was Prophets, Seers And Sages The Angels Of The Ages / My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows which is longer than The 1975's.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 1st March 2016, 11:58 PM

And it wasn't a number 1, but let's not forget the longest ever album title, by Chumbawumba:

The Boy Bands Have Won, and All the Copyists and the Tribute Bands and the TV Talent Show Producers Have Won, If We Allow Our Culture to Be Shaped by Mimicry, Whether from Lack of Ideas or from Exaggerated Respect. You Should Never Try to Freeze Culture. What You Can Do Is Recycle That Culture. Take Your Older Brother's Hand-Me-Down Jacket and Re-Style It, Re-Fashion It to the Point Where It Becomes Your Own. But Don't Just Regurgitate Creative History, or Hold Art and Music and Literature as Fixed, Untouchable and Kept Under Glass. The People Who Try to 'Guard' Any Particular Form of Music Are, Like the Copyists and Manufactured Bands, Doing It the Worst Disservice, Because the Only Thing That You Can Do to Music That Will Damage It Is Not Change It, Not Make It Your Own. Because Then It Dies, Then It's Over, Then It's Done, and the Boy Bands Have Won.

Of course, we can't have a conversation about the pronunciation of 'Ibiza' without making reference to this:

Whoah! Back To The Island
Whoah! We're Going To Eat Pizza
Whoah! We're Gonna Have A Party
Whoah! In The Mediterranean Sea"

Ugh. Kelly now falling at a comical rate sad.gif

Hopefully when her Ellen performance gets shown on ITV2, it'll boost it a little more.

As Buzzjack is currently doing a campaign to get the song "Electric" by Lisa Scott-Lee into the charts (see the http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/The-Lounge-f10.html for details) updates for the song in this thread after midnight tonight is encouraged! smile.gif

I'm honestly not convinced there are more than 10-15 people behind this. sad.gif Although, if it even shows up at all that'd be amazing. ohmy.gif

I think the higher it goes the more people from the website will download the song tbh.

Girls Like arrow up.gif #3
Work arrow down.gif #4

Posted by: LushLifeLee 3rd March 2016, 01:44 PM

I'm wondering if 'Girls Like' could potentially get to number one in two weeks? It's been playlisted by Capital, Kiss and I can see Radio 1 playlisting it very shortly and the video effect will help when it's eventually released. Zara going to have two songs in the top 5 next week though :shakingcheeseblock:

I really hope so, mostly because Sir Tinie getting an 8th UK #1 would be a truly iconic moment (and ZaZa having her first #1 too of course)

kill it

Loads of interesting climbers there. I think 'I'm In Control' will be peaking in popularity just as the warmer weather hits in the next few weeks. The Flo Rida track looks a hit on paper and sounds like one too - one for hazy summer evenings!

Have a feeling Jay Sean/Sean Paul will be a surprise smash hit too. Not necessarily the sound of the record but the return of Jay Sean being so strong. Already played loads on KISS and 1Xtra have added it upfront today.

Flo & Derulo at #30, was it just released today?
nice to see AlunaGeorge at #40!!!!

Read in Record of The Day Magazine today that UK media is being actively discouraged from playlisting Work From Home, because the album's proper single is out in April and is a "stronger song".

Posted by: Froot. 3rd March 2016, 09:37 PM

Syco are ridiculous. laugh.gif

Posted by: Dan_ 3rd March 2016, 09:49 PM

'Work from Home' seems to be doing the business right now though, would be a waste to let a hit like that slide.

This is the same group that decided to release 'Bo$$', changed their mind to 'Sledgehammer' and then changed their mind back again to 'Bo$$' though. laugh.gif

Posted by: mdh 3rd March 2016, 09:54 PM

Hope I'm In Control is a hit - really getting into it!

Posted by: Ryan. 3rd March 2016, 09:55 PM

It was announced even before release that Work From Home was only the new single for the US so it's not unexpected, but now it is in the top 10 they surely must push it!

Posted by: Envoirment 3rd March 2016, 10:19 PM

Hopefully they'll push it in the UK now as it has the potential to be a substantial hit! It would gaurentee some hype around the album and I can see Capital supporting "Work From Home".

Posted by: ML Hammer95 3rd March 2016, 10:30 PM

If the demands there, then the record label will push 'Work From Home'. Even if they don't, radio stations would just play the song anyway - especially Capital. Examples would be Love Yourself and Thinking Out Loud. Even back in 2002, radio stations loved Dilemma so much, they played it even when Hot In Herre was the designated single.
